Now, as they honed in on each other, it was time to see which one had the strongest will. It was a classic male vs. female confrontation, something you don’t see in most other sports. Rags to Riches’ powerful four-wide move had enabled her to outrun Curlin and establish a slight advantage turning for home. Curlin fought back, as both horses switched to their right lead on cue. Velazquez threw a wide cross on the reins to gather the filly, while Robby Albarado went to a right-handed whip, causing Curlin to duck in, away from the filly. When Albarado switched to a series of left-handed whips, Curlin came back out and bumped Rags to Riches. But the filly, who has been manhandling humans since she was a baby, was not about to be intimidated by the powerful chestnut. Albarado continued to hit Curlin left-handed, and again he came out and bumped Rags to Riches, who again shrugged it off. Velazquez resorted to only a single left-handed whip, then switched and gave her one right-handed whip. Her blood was up, and Velazquez realized she needed little encouragement. Although Curlin kept digging in and battling back, Rags to Riches refused to relinquish her head advantage. As she eased in slightly and Curlin again came out into her, the two were leaning all over each other as the wire approached. Most horses, especially fillies, would have been intimidated by the contact from a bruiser like Curlin, but Rags to Riches seemed to relish this test of superiority. Velazquez now was just waving the whip and leaving it all up to her. With sheer grit, determination, and tenacity, Rags to Riches kept her head advantage to the finish following a sizzling final quarter-mile in :23.83.

I only really follow US racing so it wasn't until recently that I learned Winx actually has the same sire as Zenyatta, Street Cry. Crazy that he produced two legends.
And it's somewhat lucky that it happened, at all. Street Cry came to Australia for a few seasons when he first went to stud, but his offspring didn't shoot the lights out, and so he was dropped from Australian service. But his early crop runners showed that they got better with age, and after an absence of a few years, Street Cry was given a second chance out here, but I do know that it was a 50/50 call. Thankfully for the racing world, they did go ahead and bring him out for a second time, and it was in that second life here that Winx was conceived.
Lots of famous “ladies”out there and their babies! I remember watching Ruffian run and watching that match race. I was 14 and in tears after seeing her breakdown I do think she would have won! I think it would have been close
Many consider the match race as a win for Ruffian as she was ahead of Foolish Pleasure when she broke down. To my knowledge, Foolish Pleasure's owners, even gave her owner's the win. Such a shame they didn't have the technology and gear we have today as I believe, she could of been saved had she been in a pool.

Such great memories… Now Mandy Pope has a band of mares like no other. I know science says foals get 60% from the mare. But I think it is more. Such greatness
A mare can only pass on 50% to a foals genetics. The stallion passes 50% as well. To say a mare passes 60% is just genetically not possible. All mammals are an exact 50/50 percent of parents genetic material.
Thank you for the video, it brought back memories and was the perfect way to start a chilly gray Sunday morning in San Francisco with a huge mug of coffee. #TEAMRACHEL
I know what you mean KRG, but it's not really that amazing. Mares at best can only have one foal a year, so realistically they only get maybe 4-5 chances to produce a top runner. Stallion have hundreds of offspring in their lifetimes, and even the top stallions struggle to do better than one in ten being stakes class. Mares just don't get the statistical opportunity to show what they can pass on.
Few top race mares make good broodmares. You have the occasional exception like Personal Ensign, but most of the tomboys bomb out - as Mandy Pope has discovered.
@ A J C Winx won 4 of her first ten races, while she was still maturing. But from late 3yo onwards, she then won 33 in a row. Final stats were 37 wins from 43 starts.

I still have two winning tickets ($20) framed from Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe 2017 and Breeders' Cup Turf 2018!
But, Zenyatta has my heart. She TALKED to us by swinging her head with that beautiful mane and her feet. HER DANCING FEET. She LOVED to run past all the rest of the crowd, switch gears and floor it. Mike Smith was THE MAN to me! Hahaha! Long Live Zenyatta, Queen Z. Thank you for the joy♥️ 🐎
Could Winx and Zenyatta even have raced eachother, or were they too far apart in age? It would have been a good race to see, but then maybe not fair as Winx raced best on grass and it looked like Zenyatta raced best on dirt.
One other filly in Ozz was a horse that won the Melbourne cup three in a row. Her name was Makaby Deva. So here in Ozz she is a legend as the Melbourne cup is the race that stops a national.
I hate how these videos make out racing to be something nice. A race horse starts racing as early as a two year old. Horses aren't supposed to be ridden until they are at least 3 and a half years old. Not only that but race horses are FORCED to run at unnatural speeds. And don't tell me horses love running. While they're happy to prance around and have zoomies, they do not appreciate being whipped for a few hundred meters or a few kilometers. Young race horses sometimes have fatal injuries which result in owners putting them down because they're worthless. Now, when a mare retires, she spends maybe a week or two a year not being pregnant. As you've seen in the Rags to Riches part, she was sold to Ireland in 2009 and had 12 foals since then. That's 1 foal a year. A mare is in foal for about 340 days, sometimes more, sometimes less, but the difference isn't usually more than 5 days give or take. When a race mare gives birth, she is almost instantly taken away to a stud farm where she gets into foal heat. Foal heat is what happens to a mare about a week after giving birth when she is around stallions. They instantly breed her and get her back to her foal that was without her for some time. This is stressful and cruel both towards the mare and the foal. And a lot of race horses in the world end up in meat factories. The ones with injuries get thrown away or killed. To the race industry, horses aren't animals but machines that work for them in unnatural conditions. So, a race mare spends a week or two A YEAR not being pregnant. After giving birth, she is taken away from her foal so she gets into foal heat, and then she is taken back to her foal. This cycle repeats on and on. Imagine being forced to be pregnant every year for over a decade. I understand horses are animals and some may say this is fine because horses in the wild would do the same. When you look at it, humans are also capable of the same thing. But pregnancy puts irreversible, massive strains on our bodies. Same thing happens to horses. These horses are not bred so the horse population rises. These horses are bred so they can become money machines. And most horses that end up on the track end up with terrible bone and tendon issues in the future. That's unavoidable for any horse that spends years on tracks. I'm sorry. Actually, I'm not. Horse racing is abuse. It's a terrible industry that uses pain (whipping) to force an animal to do something that animal is not supposed to do in order to get cash. The racing industry is trading horse lives for money.
Zenyatta: She was AWESOME. Lucky enough to be living in DelMar at the time she was running and she was fun to watch (with that dance) in the paddock but I’ve never watched a horse, male or female that could spot the greatest horses 15-20 lengths early… and then she came running. The 2009 Breeders Cup produced the greatest win but also the greatest race call by Trevor Denman! Both legends in the sport, together at the wire… “one we will never forgot…”!
there was a mare called ''black caviar'' who won 25 out of 25 a world record that stands today if you exclude the mighty hungarian mare kincsem 54 wins undefeated.
Exactly. Plus she had the 7th spot out of the starting gate, from which she stumbled and she ran the entire race far wide while Curlin had a dream trip near the rail. Nothing against, Curlin, but Rags is my favorite racing mare of them all.

at the begining for zenyattas clip 11:23 i think she does that becasue she might have laminitis, this is where there horse hurts in all four feet but mostly the front ones and so they start doing thes sorts of things and throughout the years it gets worst if not treated, i am not a vet so i might be very wrong but this is just what i think after seeing the 'dance' she did.
1) Zenyatta was famous for her Spanish walk, a dressage move which she did naturally. She did it before many of her races, perhaps all of them, in the walking ring and the post-parade. I don't know if it was nervousness, or a way of showing off for the crowd, or if she did the move around the barn, as well. I do know it was perfectly normal pre-race behavior for her and was oft commented upon; the Wikipedia entry on her mentions her "dance moves." In another video featuring Zenyatta, someone made the comment that her soundness would be questionable if she walked normally (because it was not normal for her). 2) A horse with laminitis is NOT going to entered in a race, and would certainly not be winning regularly over several years, as Zenyatta did. Nor would she have been able to carry her pregnancies without the extra weight exacerbating laminitis. There is a 3-minute video on RUclips titled "ZENYATTA'S DANCE!!!.dv" showing her exhibiting this behavior in various post parades.
Many Jockeys cross themselves to give thanks for a race without injury...maybe that was her way of using a ritual to ask for protection from injury...her good luck charm.

And if you were able too, you'd hear the whip making a sharp cracking sound, this is what encourages the horses to get a move on. Trust me, if you were to strike one of those horses, as sweated up as they are, it'd create an electric jolt. You'd literally down your horse within seconds. And there's been massive studies that have shown what these 'faux electric jolts' can do. It can cause muscles to burn, cook flesh, etc. At that point, a racehorse's career is literally over with. As for surplus foals or foals who don't run well, there's loads of options that breeding farms, owners, co-owners and share holders look into after a racing career is over. Many OTTBs become successful eventers, cross country racers, dressage horses, therapy horses and regular run of the mill, trail mounts. Keenland even plays host to specialized sales for such a thing ^^ But it's kept pretty hush hush because kill buyers are, sadly, a thing.
I think you meant retire to broodmare for Enable. Females can't... you know.... breed another mare... that's a stallions job. Putting out to stud means you are putting your stallion up for breeding a mare.
I hate match races. Because of how much money and hype they generate, even if one of the horses is not in top form, they still get run. In any other race, even with a small field, if the trainer or owner feels there is a problem the horse is scratched.
As any of us who own retired racehorses know. Zenyatta's "dancing" is anxiety. She and Mike Smith are my favorite of all time. She too should be given a breeding break. After all she is 18 yrs old. Wouldn't it be nice to reunite her with her non-racing babies!!??
Would rather she go to Old Friends and thereby be available for fan visits and be safe comfy and loved and by attracting fans help support that wonderful OTTB retirement farm ( plus she loves people/ attention reportedly) There is a band of retired mares so she’d have company 😬
One thing that for some reason really seems to throw Rachel Alexandras most vocal fans for a loop is the perceived difficulty of her Preakness race. For casual racing fans the Preakness is likely much more recognizable than the Breeders Cup Classic but that is only because of it's placement in the Triple Crown races not because is is harder. They saw when Zenyatta became the first female to win the classic and since it had only been around since 1982 where as it had been around 100 years since a female won the Preakness, so to them that I guess seemed more impressive but anyone who knows knows there is no comparison in difficulty. The Preakness is absolutely nowhere near as difficult. As evident by the fact that only the top best couple horses from the Preakness are able to enter in the Classic, which is horse racing's championship race. They don't have to take my word for it just compare the career results of the 2 fields (Rachel's other 2 male races were even weaker fields). The Breeders Cup Classic is made up of the very best horses from around the world each year. I think what must confuse those fans about the importance of the Breecers Cup is the fact that Rachel's trainer and owners spent all 3 years of her career ducking the competition. They tried different excuses but the truth about why they didn't come was pretty evident and her name was Zenyatta. They tried to say it was not wanting to run Rachel on that surface , but considering she had not only already ran on a synthetic track but won. So that excuse makes no sense. Of course this was further disproven when the 2010 event was not only held on dirt but at Rachels most raced track. Of course that came on the heels of them backing down from the long awaited showdown that had a purse of 5 million if both horses showed up, only one did. When it comes to comparing the 2 the fact that anyone at any point really thought they were equals let alone thought Rachel was better is silly. Probably my favorite and most telling statistic is the fact that Zenyatta had as many Grade 1 wins as Rachel had wins total (13). Sadly after getting beaten by a horse Zenyatta not just shared a stable with but would absolutely brutalize on the track when training the "Showdown" was no more and thus were left with delusional fans forever using the "What if?" mindset. By the way Zenyatta furtheed the humiliation of Rachel's loudest fans a race later when she too met up with Zardana on the track. Despite being forced to carry an insane 129 lbs (a full 11 pounds more than Zardana and a good 5 pounds more than Rachel ever carried in her career) Zenyatta flew by her like she dropped an anchor. Watching that race again I can still blur my vision and picture Rachel running her heart out, dueling with Zardana down the stretch with everything she had as a giant blur flashed across the screen on her way to running down the leader, carryign 9 lbs less by the way)
She ran in 43 actually... Wasn't even slowing down when retired, easily could have had another cox plate.. If anything the owners were the opposite of greedy.
Well she's the best horse in Australian history, and lesser Australian horses have won in America, so why wouldn't she? Have you heard of Shannon? An Australian miler who was taken to America as a six year old, with no dirt experience, yet won the Hollywood Gold Cup and equalled two world records. Shannon in Australia wouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Winx, so common sense ought to tell you she must have been some horse.
Only contest winners get a chance to visit her (Rachel Alexandra)? and only two times per year ? Since she's not breeding why not allow more visitors...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, but none of them had to face the years top colt in a mile and a quarter, one-turn, match race. Rachel Alexandra couldn’t even win against fillies at a mile and a quarter. Rags to Riches wins a mile and a half race and was never the same again.
All amazing but Zenyatta's finishes give me chills. Every time she ran from the back and just flew into high gear overtake mode.
The way she passed the world's best dirt horses in the 2009 Classic, as if they were standing still . . . something that won't be seen again.
Her last race was fixed. The owners made her jockey hold her back longer than usual, so she couldn't make up the time. Watch them all in a row and you will see this.

Winx 33 in a row, the world may never see that again! Truly amazing!

I remember watching Ruffian run
and watching that match race. I was 14 and in tears after seeing her breakdown
I do think she would have won!

Mandy Pope and Summer Wind farm are the mega mare collectors
A mare can only pass on 50% to a foals genetics. The stallion passes 50% as well. To say a mare passes 60% is just genetically not possible. All mammals are an exact 50/50 percent of parents genetic material.

Winx what amazing mare
This might be my favorite vid!!!
Amazing that with these mares and the bloodlines they were crossed with, that nothing exceptional became of any of their offspring.
Well, to be fair Winx has only recently started breeding. She lost her first foal, but hopefully she has time. We'll see.
Sometimes, if you follow pedigrees, it's the 2nd generation that inherits the talents.
Winx the undefeated still makes my heart sing every time I see her races. A legend truely 💖 I hope she’s enjoying retirement 😊
Winx wasnt undefeated, she was even unplaced and lost multiple races in her career
@ A J C Winx won 4 of her first ten races, while she was still maturing. But from late 3yo onwards, she then won 33 in a row. Final stats were 37 wins from 43 starts.

Zenyatta isn’t meant to produce a horse like herself. I don’t know why they keep trying. Let her live out her life in peace.
Winx. Simply the best we have ever seen. An absolute freak.
Girl power all the way!!

Where does Winning Colors rank? 😁✌🏼
Zenyatta’s canter. 😍

NICE
at the begining for zenyattas clip 11:23 i think she does that becasue she might have laminitis, this is where there horse hurts in all four feet but mostly the front ones and so they start doing thes sorts of things and throughout the years it gets worst if not treated, i am not a vet so i might be very wrong but this is just what i think after seeing the 'dance' she did.
I think not. I think she did it because she was nervous. It was actually her trademark in racing and we'll never know why she did it.
There is a 3-minute video on RUclips titled "ZENYATTA'S DANCE!!!.dv" showing her exhibiting this behavior in various post parades.

those usa jockeys give their horses a good thrashing, is there no limit to how many times they can hit a horse?
I still think that Zenyatta's last race was fixed. If you watch all her races one after the other, you will see that in the last one she was held back longer than the other ones she always won. If they had allowed her jockey to let her go sooner she would have had enough time to make up the distance and win her last one too. Big Big money on that last race.

@@RACINGAROUNDTHEWORLD what I cannot understand: Sometimes they keep beating and whipping a horse when the race is already run, horse is somewhere in the middle or end of the field, nothing remains to be won. Eventers sometimes get a slight slap on the rump and an encouraging word - and they, hell, need courage. This frenetic whipping just shows an absolutely DUMB rider... as an owner or trainer I would kick them out of their jobs, sorry to say.
@@MollyGrue1 The jockeys aren't actually hitting the horse as THAT IS illegal. ALL racetracks have SPCA on standby and trust me when I say, there'd be severe consequences to ANYONE caught breaking that golden rule. It only appears that they're hitting the horse when in reality, they're hitting their boot.

Sorry. Her.... English is not my native language....It is a mistake.

@@anthonyj7989 that’s not entirely true, I’ve seen Aus horses win Breeders cup races in the past!

Why isn't black caviar on this list of great race mares?
In the next for sure!
Only contest winners get a chance to visit her (Rachel Alexandra)? and only two times per year ? Since she's not breeding why not allow more visitors...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know!
So do I.
Over breeding not good for any animal....include humans
Yes, but none of them had to face the years top colt in a mile and a quarter, one-turn, match race. Rachel Alexandra couldn’t even win against fillies at a mile and a quarter. Rags to Riches wins a mile and a half race and was never the same again.
What does that have to do with anything?
This is terribly sad to see these mares overbred. Terrible industry, terrible owners.
