His stride length was the longest ever recorded among thoroughbreds TO THIS DAY. He was also wildly popular, even among the people who had never seen a race before. Man o’ War SHOULD NOT be third. In my opinion, even 2nd is a wild understatement. But, then again, this is just my opinion. Everyone is allowed to have their own.
    Also-Red rum as 4th??? What is this….I don’t own horses. Compared to people who do, I know little about them. But looking at EVERY SINGLE ranking of racehorses on google, NOTHING mentions him as even IN the top 10 of thoroughbreds.

    • @theOlLineRebel
      @theOlLineRebel 8 месяцев назад

      Yes and no, but she is “iconic”. Short list should be easy to fill with icons. As far as Kincsem, huge English fish in the tiny pond of Hungary. Hardly raced anywhere else, and her strong English blood meant she was likely to dominate. She raced only 2 serious races, 1 each in France and England (Goodwood). 6 of those races were walk-overs, so really just 48 races (still huge). Context. Not quite as guaranteed great as made out to be.

    • @melisor9894
      @melisor9894 8 месяцев назад +1

      Not sure why you assume that Hungary was a "tiny pond" of horse racing in the 1870's. More like a "hot bed". But I digress. "Hardly raced anywhere else"? In her juvenile season alone, Kincsem raced and won 10 times: 2 in Hungary, 6 in Germany, 1 each in Austria and Czechoslovakia. Do you consider the Grosser Preis von Baden ( which she won TWICE) a backyard race? It was one of the biggest races on the 1878 calendar, was part of the Breeders'
      Cup Challenge Series, and is still a Group 1 race. The horses she defeated were not "dominated by strong English blood" many of these horses came from the same bloodlines. The idea that Kincsem only raced against backyard nags is ludicrous. To quote Dr Charles Justice : " She may, indeed, be The Greatest Horse of All". @@theOlLineRebel

    • @theOlLineRebel
      @theOlLineRebel 8 месяцев назад

      @@melisor9894 I am certainly not fully familiar with Austro-Hungarian (yes, they were 1 empire, so not really separate "places") pedigrees and how much of the origin English blood they used, but there is little doubt almost no talk is ever made of any national racing on the world stage in Europe except mother England, and a bit of France. To argue it's on par is like saying Maryland (today, not 100 years ago) or Illinois is on par with New York in quality racing. Everyone knows that is not true. Taking it a bit personally. I am a Marylander, and very proud of our heritage in racing, but to say it's high-class over the last 30 years or more is delusional. I especially don't like it because it USED to be great, and has fallen hugely while New York remains and Kentucky got better (as well as California). To say any other state has or had the same quality is just silly. There is no comparison and besides Kincsem, no one talks about "Austro-Hungarian racing" in the big racing histories. You can also tell by how few horses ever appear with those various nationalities as birthplace in major legend (or even just best of the year) pedigrees. Not personal, just true.

    • @melisor9894
      @melisor9894 8 месяцев назад +1

      Well, no one is going to talk about "Austro-Hungarian racing" because between WWI, the Treaty of Trianon, Kun's Red Terror, WWII and the assorted Communist regimes, very few racing TB's survived slaughter let alone being able to race. Horse racing was considered elitest and race courses, stables and written records were routinely destroyed. I found this out first hand when I went to Hungary during the time of the "Hungarian Peoples Republic" (and don't think THAT wasn't scary at times). Yet monuments to Kincsem and streets bearing her name.survived: Even Kruschev couldn't overcome her legend. My escort told me that Kincsem was to be celebrated as a victim of Capitalist Exploitation. Okay, whatever. If that is not lasting fame in the face of rewritten history, what is?
      I truly believe that had it not been for Charles Hancock Reed (may he rest in peace and sing with the angels) and "Operation Cowboy," not only the Lippizan but many other Polish and Central European bloodlines would have been lost. As a native Californian, I take a modest pride in my states' providing refuge for many of those horses at Kellogg Ranch, Cal Poly Pomona and Camp Pendleton.
      Kudos on your loyalty to Maryland Racing. I was enthralled by "Thoroughbred" the series about Bonita Farms and it's adaptation to changing times.
      Given the subject of your presentation, most famous horses, and iconic horses, I humbly submit that Kincsem deserves a place on the list.
      @@theOlLineRebel

    • @theOlLineRebel
      @theOlLineRebel 8 месяцев назад

      @@melisor9894 We can certainly agree to disagree. Since this was a top 10, I don't think even world-wide Kincsem could truly make it based on my views. It is very amazing you went to Hungary and that Kincsem is so revered there. To wit, do you know about Billy Barton? Maybe not. Laurel has a statue of him outside the grandstand, and he is buried on his owner's estate around the corner from me. For some he was a big deal, going to the Grand National 2x and winning alot in steeplechasing. Yet most don't know who he is. He is not even in the Hall of Fame here. Legend? Who knows. Perhaps a local legend, but maybe not on the scale of Battleship or Lonesome Glory. Back to this list, some I cannot believe are not on there (Phar Lap), and others, why (War Admiral)? Oh wait - famous. That is the only word. Or iconic. From that standpoint, yes, I could see Kincsem making it. (Still don't think WA would be on top 10 "famous" lists in 2024.)

    Wabout Genghis Kahn’s favorite war horse, Dulmukh- who helped conquer China, Emperor Caligula’s prized stallion Incitātus who was made a Roman consul, or General Custer’s Comanche- the ONLY survivor or at the Battle of Little Big Horn? Those horses sound way more historically significant lol

    After watching the video for me the biggest name of the lot has been missed, Valegro, one of if not the best horse ever in the sport of Dressage, There are more horse sports than racing. There is Dressage, Cross Country, Show Jumping and 3 Day Eventing to consider as well, which brings Big Star, the horse on which Nick Skelton won his gold medal, Primmores Pride, Pippa Funnell's which died last year at the age of 30 and Toy Town which is what Zara Tindall was riding for her Olympic medal and thats only UK not looking further afield
    Given the shout Valegro would get the title by a mile
    I don't think any of the records held by Charlotte and Valegro will be broken in a very long time
    From the horse racing there is one massive name missing, Dessert Orchid

    Part of determining the greatness of race horses is the number of great horses they produce. In that regard few exceed Man O’ War and Dust Commander. I might be mistaken but I believe Dust Commander is considered the greatest sire of champions of any other race horse.

      I had that book and adored it! Incredible....the Godolphin is one of the only three pillars of the thoroughbred as we know it today! . The Darley Arabian and Byerley (sp??) Turk are the other two. The blood of these three- all Middle Eastern and arabian- transformed racehorses into the the fleet powerhouses we know today. Sorry if I made some mistakes. Speaking of the book King of the Wind, I had every single book by it's author Marguerite Henry. The illustrations by Walter Farley are simply magnificent!!

      Steroids can win Triple Crowns, just ask BB. Steroids can win Olympic Gold, just ask the 1972 East German Olympic Team that finished an amazing 3rd overall at the 1972 Munich Olympics. (Spoiler Alert, Spoiler Alert). Secretariat's 1973 Triple Crown was 3 yrs before the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The East German trans/female swim team won 11 of 13 gold medals before being disqualified of It's(sic) Medals.

    An interesting if somewhat biased compilation of famous Race Horses, but with glaring omissions, such as "Shergar" and "Phar Lap" both mentioned in the comments here. Surely one of the most unforgivable omissions however, was the legendary "Nijinsky" who not only astounded the world with his brilliance on the track, but also passed on that brilliance to many of his progeny, many of whom went on to have eminent track victories, but were also successful at stud. These victories earned "NIJINSKI" the Very Rare Accolade of being named as " SIRE of SIRES"..!!

    You forgot to mention Secretariat’s track record at the Belmont 2:24 and the fact that his jockey, Ronnie Turcotte barely used his whip in any of their races. Also, the reason for his speed and stamina was the size of his heart which weighed approximately 22 pounds or 9.97 kilograms.( no one knows exactly how much his heart actually weighs because they couldn’t bring themselves to remove it from the champion) Disney also made a movie about him in 2010. I know all about this horse so don’t get any facts wrong.
