I worked with the humble man who foaled Cigar at Country Life Farm in Maryland, Richard Harris. It was such a treat to experience his reactions during Cigar's stellar career.

I was so thrilled to meet Cigar at the Kentucky Horse Park. I had never seen him race in person but of course had heard and watched on TV. It is emotional. I cried when I met Smarty and in 2012 when I met Rachel Alexandra. They are such beautiful noble animals.

I met Cigar at the KHP in 2013. From the moment I touched his nose I was in love. Secretariat will always be my forever love but Cigar is a very close second tied with Tinners Way. This was a great video.
What a great piece with Bill, Jerry, Julie. I still miss Cigar. Saw his loss to AS in the BC. Visited him at Cool more before they discovered his inability to breed. I then visited him at KHP several times. He was imo just the most beautiful TB I'd ever seen step foot on a track. Hurt my heart going to the Park after he passed.

I met Cigar at the horse park. It was absolutely amazing. You just knew you were standing in the presence of greatness. It was an amazing feeling. I have a photo of Cigar that is hanging on my wall.

I fell in love with racing because of Cigar. He was such a beautiful, charismatic horse. The Paulsons, Bill Mott and Jerry Bailey were all class people who made sure Cigar's health and welfare was always top priority. I was privileged to see him in person at Del Mar for the 1996 Pacific Classic and you have never seen an animal who radiated such s trength and star power. He knew he was special, neck bowed and on his toes. When the balloon burst and he lost you could hear a pin drop. That didn't make me love him any less. ( I blamed Bailey). It's a shame he couldn't produce any heirs but his legacy will always be the excellence he showed on the track, for almost a 2 year period, winning 16 in a row at the top level and becoming a World Champion with his victory in Dubai. He retired in 1996 and it wasn't until 2008 that Curlin topped him as the then all-time leading money winner. Not saying he was the GOAT but, like Jerry Bailey said, he made me love horses.
@@saspinks3001 It's always bothered me that people put more emphasis on the breeding aspect of a horse's career than what they accomplish on the track. Some of the greatest runners of all time couldn't re-produce themselves. I know the business end is all about stud fees but I think about the 2 and 3 year olds retired before they even had a chance to prove greatness by racing. And by this guys reasoning, I guess horses like Kelso, Forego, John Henry and Da Hoss were failures because they were geldings. Anyway, sorry I vented but thanks for your comment.

x10000, having a hard time keeping interest in the sport when a horse finally catch my attention after a few great wins, then boom, he's gone 2 starts later....
One fine example of this is Justify. Yes he's an unbeaten TC winner. But to me he's a disgrace to all the TC winners who came before him. He only raced 6 freaking times, then was retired after the Belmont because of some BS excuse. God I kinda wish Justify had turned up sterile.

It gives me shivers to watch this knowing I have touched Cigar. He really did love the people at the horse park, I was lucky to see him several times. He is by far, my favorite racehorse to ever grace the Hall of Champions over there.💓

One time will never forget I was able to hold his lead while standing beside him for a photo which still hangs on my wall. He really was an amazing horse and sad to know will probably never see another like him.

We've seen other horses go on long winning steaks since Cigar, but it's no coincidence that those horses were dominate mares because they could get fixed weights or the mare allowance. Azeri, Zenyatta, Winx recently. Also Silent Witness I believe won 17 in a row in Hong Kong, though he was a sprinter. Cigar won 16 in a row in handicaps when that still meant a little something. Crazy accomplishment, and for about 18 months, he was as good a horse as you'll ever see.
The great Australian sprinter Black Caviar was another very dominant mare of recent times with an incredible win streak of 26 races in a row with no defeats in her illustrious career.
You mentioned a few all time greats but one left out that needs to be mentioned... Ruffain, her average margin of victory was 8 lengths, there’s no telling what so may have done!!!
When Secretariat’s trainer Lucian Lauren who seen Secretariat every day who had 3 world records at the time said Ruffain might be better than Secretariat you need to take that seriously!!!!
I remember picking Cigar in The Donn. Still remember being the only one cheering when he was winning the race. It was if I was celebrating at a funeral. Everyone around me was super quiet. At the time, I didn't understand the significance of what had happened on the back stretch to Holy Bull.
If Julie had ridden Cigar on that incredible streak it would've been a PR dream for horse racing. But take nothing away from Jerry Bailey, he was one of the best, rode smart for a long time.
I saw Cigar at KY horse park. He was a magnificent confident horse with a great temperament. Da Hoss was there too but he was short and dull and did not have the same awesome presence as cigar. I remember one woman there had a hard time accepting Cigar was sterile. She wanted to find a way around it so she could send mares to him. I think everyone felt that way.
I flew across the country for the Pacific Classic in 1996, then went to Canada for the BC that fall. 15 years later I had the fortune of meeting Jerry Bailey and apologized for being the jinx...both times. Interesting note, Alphabet Soup the upset winner at Woodbine (and still track record there at 1 1/4mi), is the oldest living Classic winner.

Quick story for you about that, I have 2 OTTBs well we were going to a 4-H event and when we got there my mare had herself all worked up, she was into a full sweat by the time we got there, head to tail soaked! I took her aside away from everyone to calm her down, there was no way I was gonna let the young girl take her at that point so I took her away with the lunge line and just sent her around for a little bit, didn’t want to work her just let her burn off the nervous energy for about 10 minutes and she just settled right down and was just terrific after that. The young girl had no problems with her at all! They did the showmanship first and that’s just a lot of standing in the ring while a judge looks them over and you walk them a little to show you have control but she was perfect for the girl, I was so proud of her!! Haha. Then they did the gaming and it all went as good as you could possibly hope for! They can get really worked up before what ever event your about to do with them, just glad we had time to work through it!!
Cigar IMO is the greatest race horse that we have ever seen in modern history. Not even the great Secretariat would've been able to win as many grade ones with the competiton Cigar had to race against. He'll always go down as GOAT of racehorses and his jockey Jerry Bailey as well 👏🏆

late in the interview when Bailey said that he was surprised that the backstretch people who came to the rail to see Cigar made me choke. long story short many years back he and Mike Smith leaving the backstretch and I asked them for a tip . Bailey kept walking chin up in the air like Peb used to draw. Mike stopped and thought gave me his (subsequently) only winner on the day !
I get chills watching this magnificent race horse winning the breeders cup classic?!! Tom Durkin calling that race was just like cigar a TRUE HERO To the sport!!! a newish fan at the Pacific Classic. My sister wanted her 2$ win souvenir ticket on Cigar but forgot...so I ran at last minute to window for her. Well got to end of race and she looked at ticket: I'd accidentally put $4 to win on 2 horse instead of $2 to win on 4!! It was a win ticket on UPSET WINNER DARE AND GO!! How is the foreman for cigar when he was a foal at brookside annex I was also the one that called him the hammer I was so proud to be in the sports illustrated in 1992 with him he was a very super horse I never did get to see him at the horse Park and I sure regret that so much

I visited the Kentucky Horse where he was stabled. They had a screen over his stall door. Said he would try to bite anyone that came close. Groom said he bit or would try to kill anything that came close. They tried putting a goat in his stall to calm him down, he killed it. A chicken got into the stall and it seemed to calm him down.
One great Horse to let behind only by his castrate; even though some another “ “champions” winers of big races were “castrate” ( without surgery)in his life as a stallion, too.!!!
Secretariat is overrated. Lost 25% of the time. Inconsistent other than his TC series. He lost 25% of time. 🤣 And secretariat couldn't even win 6 races in a row. Not even once. LOL.
Thank you Mr. Paulson for not doing what most money hungry owners of excellent runners do and that's pull them out after a couple races for stud duty because they're in it for the money and nothing else. Thoroughbred racing would undoubtedly be a much bigger sport if there was some excitement to it.

The recent high profile positives and federal indictments aren't helping.

Cigar was a great horse! Have you ever heard of Winx? Career 43:37-3-0 Won 33 consecutive races in a row, 25 of them Group 1 races.
That’s the second longest streak of all time, something we may never see again

I saw Cigar at KY horse park. He was a magnificent confident horse with a great temperament. Da Hoss was there too but he was short and dull and did not have the same awesome presence as cigar. I remember one woman there had a hard time accepting Cigar was sterile. She wanted to find a way around it so she could send mares to him. I think everyone felt that way.
I flew across the country for the Pacific Classic in 1996, then went to Canada for the BC that fall. 15 years later I had the fortune of meeting Jerry Bailey and apologized for being the jinx...both times. Interesting note, Alphabet Soup the upset winner at Woodbine (and still track record there at 1 1/4mi), is the oldest living Classic winner.

@Terry Melvin I believe that it makes a lot of sense! Quick story for you about that, I have 2 OTTBs well we were going to a 4-H event and when we got there my mare had herself all worked up, she was into a full sweat by the time we got there, head to tail soaked! I took her aside away from everyone to calm her down, there was no way I was gonna let the young girl take her at that point so I took her away with the lunge line and just sent her around for a little bit, didn’t want to work her just let her burn off the nervous energy for about 10 minutes and she just settled right down and was just terrific after that. The young girl had no problems with her at all! They did the showmanship first and that’s just a lot of standing in the ring while a judge looks them over and you walk them a little to show you have control but she was perfect for the girl, I was so proud of her!! Haha. Then they did the gaming and it all went as good as you could possibly hope for! They can get really worked up before what ever event your about to do with them, just glad we had time to work through it!!
Cigar IMO is the greatest race horse that we have ever seen in modern history. Not even the great Secretariat would've been able to win as many grade ones with the competiton Cigar had to race against. He'll always go down as GOAT of racehorses and his jockey Jerry Bailey as well 👏🏆

late in the interview when Bailey said that he was surprised that the backstretch people who came to the rail to see Cigar made me choke. long story short many years back he and Mike Smith leaving the backstretch and I asked them for a tip . Bailey kept walking chin up in the air like Peb used to draw. Mike stopped and thought gave me his (subsequently) only winner on the day !
I get chills watching this magnificent race horse winning the breeders cup classic?!! Tom Durkin calling that race was just like cigar a TRUE HERO To the sport!!! Without a doubt the thought that Tom Durkin had put into this horse winning the classic is a True testament to GREATNESS OF SUCH A MAGNIFICENT ANIMAL........

a newish fan at the Pacific Classic. My sister wanted her 2$ win souvenir ticket on Cigar but forgot...so I ran at last minute to window for her. Well got to end of race and she looked at ticket: I'd accidentally put $4 to win on 2 horse instead of $2 to win on 4!! It was a win ticket on UPSET WINNER DARE AND GO!! Ha: after that: I checked my tickets before I left the window. ROOKIE

How is the foreman for cigar when he was a foal at brookside annex I was also the one that called him the hammer I was so proud to be in the sports illustrated in 1992 with him he was a very super horse I never did get to see him at the horse Park and I sure regret that so much
Cigar ran a 95 Beyer without Lasix on the dirt at three, which actually was in line with what he did later.
I love cigar,great horse, I think holy bull would of gave him a run for the money.

But we all have to question how he matched up against Holy Bull! As we all know the bull broke down in the Donn handicap their first meeting.
I visited the Kentucky Horse where he was stabled. They had a screen over his stall door. Said he would try to bite anyone that came close. Groom said he bit or would try to kill anything that came close. They tried putting a goat in his stall to calm him down, he killed it. A chicken got into the stall and it seemed to calm him down.
That was the Kentucky Horse Park outside of Lexingto.
One great Horse to let behind only by his castrate; even though some another “ “champions” winers of big races were “castrate” ( without surgery)in his life as a stallion, too.!!!
I would love to race him against Secretariat, War Admiral and Citation.

Secretariat is overrated. Lost 25% of the time. Inconsistent other than his TC series. He lost 25% of time. 🤣 And secretariat couldn't even win 6 races in a row. Not even once. LOL.
Thank you Mr. Paulson for not doing what most money hungry owners of excellent runners do and that's pull them out after a couple races for stud duty because they're in it for the money and nothing else. Thoroughbred racing would undoubtedly be a much bigger sport if there was some excitement to it.
Winx was very special winning 16 and loosing 1. So maybe on par with Cigar. 😊
