I am one of those that watching these videos of Secretariat, becomes emotional. He was the greatest racehorse that ever lived and to hear Penny say from Secretariats perspective: "I've won your race now I'm going to show you what I can do on a mile and a half track" sends chills up my spine.
I was at the paddock. at Winsor Riding Academy at Tampa Downs, (a subdivision). I had a friend who rode Equestrian riding. They had a TV on watching the beginning of the Belmont. As Secretariat was pulling away from Sham, and running faster and faster, you could hear a pin drop. Like everyone else watching the race, with gaping mouths. I murmured, "this is nuts." How can this be? To this day it's still one of the greatest events I have ever witnessed. At 66 years old, I can truly say that.
I never get tired of seeing this horse run.My Dad is the best horseman I've ever known. He taught me the love of the horse by the seat of my pants. He and i watched this race both of us jumping up and down with pure excitement over this unbelievable horse. My Dad passed away at 89. Every time i see this horse run i can hear my Dad hollering as he broke away run boy you run. Golden days you best enjoy them! Buck Mann I miss you and cant wait to see you again.
Remember watching as a 12 year old and that was the Greatest performance I ever watched in Sports. Gives me chills thinking about it! Secretariat was a freak in size and attitude to boot.
I was thrilled beyond expectation when I watched "Big Red" win the Triple Crown in 1973, and I still get butterflies in my stomach watching the video now! What a magnificent champion Secretariat was, superior in anatomy, strength, stride and in heart, and he showed it every time he ran! I watched him shave off a little bit of time in "the fastest two minutes in sports" at the Kentucky Derby, with his time of 1:59:2.5 and he never looked back that year, going on to win the Triple Crown. What a magnificent specimen of horse he was; he'll never be forgotten! Secretariat had a lot of class and he knew it. It must have been a thrill to work around a horse like that. He knew who he was, knew he was a winner and what he was all about, that enabled him to hold his head and tail high! A mighty horse, beautiful "Big Red" was, and I still get tears overflowing my eyes when I watch him win the Triple Crown, all these years later! There's no race suspense now, just AWE! They say that visitors who visited Claiborne Farm, would see him prance and snort like he was showing off his might! He KNEW he was very special! Secretariat was buried in a 6 by 6-foot oak casket lined with orange silk, the color used by Claiborne’s racing stables. He was buried near his sire, Bold Ruler, in a small graveyard behind the office at the farm in Paris, Kentucky. Even Queen Elizageth II, who owns racehorses herself, visited Claiborne Farm twice! RIP, SECRETARIAT -- March 30, 1970 to October 4, 1989.
I was at the Preakness in the infield. My friend and I watched all the "pre-races" then came "Big Red." I had never been to a horse race before, never experienced the sound of the horses heavy breathing, the sound of their hooves. The in-field crowd was going crazy and running toward the finish line. Yes, I was there and I will never in my life forget this!
All my dad could talk about was this horse. Luckily, we lived near Arlington Park Race Track where he could enjoy watching Secretariat often. A decade or so later, when I was teaching art and art appreciation in another state, I opened our (new to me) text book at random, and it fell to a page with a full photo of Secretariat. The caption was something like, "Is this the perfect horse?" I had to tell my students the story about Secretariat from my point of view, what I knew and had seen for myself. I'm glad a movie was done to show all this in depth. I still love this horse!
Everytime I watch the 3 races where Secretariat wins I cry. I just can't help it....he was a big magnificent horse. The greatest! R I.P. Secretariat! You will never be forgotten, never! ❤😢
I had the honor of meeting Secretariat. He wasn’t particularly interested in me, but it was a pleasant meeting, and I have a nice photo of the two of us.
Still makes my heart pound to watch that beautiful boy run! I was 13 when he ran those races and won the the Triple Crown. I was blessed to have seen it. Magnificent!
I literally cry everytime I see that Belmont race! Simply unreal. He will always be the greatest horse that ever lived, or will live. We will simply never see that again. I still adore him and his legacy and will pass it on to my kids and their kids and their kids; kids :-) RIP magnificent, beautiful boy!!!
I loved this big guy from the first time I saw him! I come here and watch him race again every Derby day since the internet gave us RUclips. Bless you big Red, I know you are running free in heaven.
There are only two sporting events where I get emotional watching time and again, The Miracle On Ice and watching Secretariat pulling away from the field at the Belmont Stakes. So blessed I got to witness both, He will always be the best in my book.
It's amazing to me how the "supernatural" dwarfed an amazingly talented horse like Sham. Perhaps if Secretariat never existed Sham would have been the triple crown. Will God ever bless us with a horse like Big Red again?
Besides watching his mind-boggling acceleration in the Preakness,it's so cool watching the fans behind the rail cheering him on and running with him. :)
The difficult thing with choosing the greatest horse of all time is that Secretariat only raced for two years. He was just coming into his prime. Heaven only knows what we would have seen if he had continued to race for a couple more years.
I feel so lucky to have a horse from his bloodline. Secretariat is in her fifth line, so he’s pretty far up there of course, but his personality really shines through in my girl. She was an amazing racer and I’m so glad I get to have her for the rest of her life.
There was speed on both sides of his pedigree. His grandam, Imperatrice, was no slouch. So he got a dose of speed from her as well as from Bold Ruler. And, of course, Princequillo, his grandsire, held the record for 1 3/4 miles and was considered one of the two greatest distance runners of all time. Kelso being the other of the two.
Very well put together video. I was 21 yrs old when I watched the triple crown. Little did I know I watched history being made. To this day I have never seen anything like it. Thanks for posting
secretariat was such a badass. inspired by him, we decided to call our off road race car big red. hopefully the soul of secretariat will help us win our next race which is the longest in the US
I LOVE YOU, SECRETARIAT!! I will never forget those 3 races, and as the years have passed, what he accomplished has become even more extraordinary. Just watching this footage gives me shivers and moves me to tears. I am moved by the clear joy he felt in running. It was truly awesome, in the very real meaning of this over-used word.
Whenever I see a video with Secretariat and I hear Penny talking about him, I always tear up because I know he will never be forgotten. When I have children I am gonna teach them about one of the greatest who has ever lived. I am gonna make sure his legacy lives on. For Penny and for Secretariat. That horse means the world to me even though I have only ever seen clips and pictures of him. He truly was a remarkable and flawless horse with a huge heart in many ways. RIP Secretariat the great!
Watched this with tears in my eyes...what a wonderful horse and champion! I still remember watching the Triple Crown that year and cheering until I was hoarse. Miss him to this day.
Incredible Secretariat the Greatest Race Horse with Attitude and Showed the World Who He Truly was. Truly, Exceptional Even to Watch in 2023. Thanks Secretariat, Penny, Ronnie, Leonard, Jim, Charlie, Diane and All Involved. Secretariat Loved to Run..... Thanks Penny
Every time i watch this horse, I see my dad clearly in my mind, this was the best horse he had ever seen and i'm so glad he got to see secretariat in Toronto before he died .I love this horse
Thank you Vintage North American Horse Racing and RUclips for this video, and the joy of being able to watch (over and over) the greatest race horse of all time.
I loved him so much. Some of the happiest memories of my life were when I got the chance to drive to Paris and visit him. He was also so sweet natured and such a big ham. I still miss him and watching this makes me cry.
Secretariat was simply breathtaking... I wasn't around to see this "tremendous machine" run, but I thank you for this amazing post so I could see his beauty :)
I just saw this movie and remember the year it all occurred....little did I know the history I was watching being made.....he was truly a Miracle.....thanks for posting this footage that wasn't part of the DVD.
There's a riding club here in Sierra Vista, Arizona when one day when I walked past there was a horse in the arena by himself with a young colt/filly. The horse reminded me of Secretariat. Stunning. Beautiful. Powerful. Like from heaven.
"Swaps, Citation, Man of War - Never Saw a Horse like that before. Let Him Run. Let the Big Horse Run." - Thanks John Stewart. THANKS Secretariat! What a horse!
Its a shame that Sham doesnt get the credit he deserves. He had to compete against a freak of nature and still kept up. If Secretariat had come a year earlier or later, Sham would have been a Triple Crown Winner also. That would be like asking the fastest player in sports to race and beat Usain Bolt. Sham was a great horse, but he was no Secretariat.
There will never be another like Big red...HANDS DOWN THE GREATEST!! CF I really appreciate all these great videos you post. Your channel is my favorite. Thanks again.
R.I.P Secretariat -- my friend - you are forever loved, what a marvelous colt..I wish I could just own one of your beautiful foals - But, why did you have to die? Only if you were completely immortal...I miss you by millions with my heart. What a strong and and positive heart -- Rare creatures are always the best ones.
I never tire of watching him, I also cry every time. Still a legend, still the best and he did it with such form and style with hardly ever a whip from Turcotte. So awesome, he's my hero. This is a great tribute video, thank you.
Greatness defined. None better to represent all that is great and all that we strive to be than the one and only Secretariat. You always inspire me. God is lucky to have you now. FF
Secretariat was smart, when i say smart i mean very smart, he got the pleasure of passing all the horses, when people see what there horse is up against they make there jockey do whatever it takes, even if it means whipping the horse reapetedly, but Secretariat? Nah He just cruised along happily not even trying.
SAY WHAT??? Secretariat LOST??? Impossible! :) I just love how in the Preakness he was dead last and it seems as if he must have said "Screw this" and hit that turbo button. Awesome!
Thank you for posting this, it straight up gave me goosebumps. This horse was just a freak of nature in the best of ways, and definitely a legend that can never be topped. I still think Ruffian, had she been able to live up to her full potential, would've made it to the same mythic level as he did.
Help! I think I need SA (Secretariat Anonymous). I am an addict. I cannot stop watching his videos and this is one of my favorites. Pure perfection. Thank you for posting it.
don't worry, we Secretariat fans give Sham as much due as we can every time they can. Have you read Bill Nack's 8 page description of the Belmont in his biography of Secretariat? It broke my heart to read the passges when Sham faltered and Pincay could tell after first 3/4 mile. Jockey behind him said Sham's hind legs looked rubbery. The poor thing never shld have run in that Belmont. He was tired. My stomach turned and I cried when I read those parts. Panch Martin was still in denial
What a great, wonderful horse. I'm really waiting for Rainaway's racing career, his grandsire is Secretariat and he has the same outlook. ^^ Secretariat is, and will ever be immortal. I don't know what will come in this century, but I don't expect to see a horse which could break his Belmont record. But I was wondering why Sham isn't in the Top 100 list of racehorses of the 20th century...he was better then many others in this list... ._.
that looks like actual video of Secretariat as a foal, not in the movie barn photo, but the video of romping foal. The markings are accurate, the solid chestnut left front leg and the right front and both hind legs have the 3 white stockings. I'd really like to know if that is movie video of him in 1970.
Why do I always get so choked up when I see the Belmont race? I know what the outcome is yet it still gets to me EVERY time!!!
I am one of those that watching these videos of Secretariat, becomes emotional. He was the greatest racehorse that ever lived and to hear Penny say from Secretariats perspective: "I've won your race now I'm going to show you what I can do on a mile and a half track" sends chills up my spine.

Cry everytime I watch the regal Secretariat. One for the ages never to be repeated. RIP sweet boy.❤
Secretariat provided some off the greatest moments of awe in Americas history.

NEVER will there be another Secretariat. NEVER.
It's hard not to cry when seeing the absolutely beauty of this horse. I could watch this horse run all day!
HOW could they rank Secretariat #2 horse of all time. That baffles me. This is the most amazing horse ever. there will never be another SECRETARIAT
I was thrilled beyond expectation when I watched "Big Red" win the Triple Crown in 1973, and I still get butterflies in my stomach watching the video now! Yes remarkable. An incredible run. Defines legend. And all 3 records still stand.
I'm 60 now and I remember this most beautiful horse ever❤❤❤
BIG RED IS RUNNING IN HEAVEN.❤❤
Poor Sham. He would have been one of the greatest horses ever. Except he just happened to be born in the same generation as Big Red
I was at the Preakness in the infield. My friend and I watched all the "pre-races" then came "Big Red."
