Mavic Air Distance / Range Test and WIFI Settings

  • In this Mavic Air Distance or Range test, I show the WIFI signal comparison between 2.4G and 5.8G. This is a test to see how far out the Air can go with no interruption to it's live monitor feed on your Apple or Android device. (in this video i am using an Apple Iphone 7plus).
    If you are trying to get smooth footage for video use it is very important to not get interrupted video on your phone during your flight. Even though your SD card will still be recording without that problem it makes flying smoothly for a cinematic footage very difficult.
    In this video i test the Mavic Air in Austin Texas out near Lake Travis with very little civilization around. I then take it back to the Rocky mountains where i climbed to the top of a surrounding peak so i could see for miles to test both extended wifi signals of the Mavic Air.
    I also go over a few tips and pointers throughout the video with a summery at the end of my personal viewpoints of the connection regarding the Mavic Air vs The Mavic pro

    Great video! I just have the Mavic Pro, so the distance test of the Mavic Air is not that important to me. Having said that, I still learn so much from watching your edits. @@SeanOzz My Spark always defaults to 5.8, I have an Air coming today and I bet it will do the same thing on auto. Everyone around our house has Comcast WIFI modems 2.4, so 5.8 is best idea anyway. So, I'm not sure that saying auto doesn't work right, there needs to be more testing on that I think.

    The scenery is amazing there, I live in the Appalachian mountains, range becomes important as nothing is ever as close as it seems in the mountains. The air is a little overwhelming when it comes to settings on about everything. So these videos like this are great for me, the awesome scenery is nice as well. One thing I’ve noticed when flying where there’s is little interference ( the middle of no where basically) is turn your own phones Bluetooth off, that seems to help with signal interference. Also , water in general , especially lakes or really wide sections of rivers , reaching places like those seem to be when interference increases. I have no clue as to why, I just know there are 2 or 3 places I fly too near my home and everything is very stable until I’m over those large areas covered with water. Perhaps the larger water covered areas reflect or amplify some unwanted signals, idk, just a guess really. I suppose the issues with video breakup when turning the drone when it’s at longer distances is related to those fold down landing gear/antenna legs only being on the front of the air. I’m going to experiment with using the 5.8 in custom mode after watching this, I’ve always left it in the auto setting. Thanks for the info, and the testing in general, I like your channel, it’s great! You risk a fairly expensive drone so many others can fly with less risk, that’s an awesome thing to do I think.

    • @SeanOzz
      @SeanOzz  4 года назад

      Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it and also thanks for sharing that. Interesting concept. I'll keep my eyes open to see if I notice a difference around water. I've not noticed a change before but had not been watching for that either.

      Oh yeah, I forgot to say before, if you get dirt in the workings on the gimbal, it seems hard as I try I can’t avoid getting some in there at times, I found an old feather duster in a garage I helped a friend clean out. I cut a couple of the best smaller sized feathers off it, works much better than a spray can full of air or what ever is in them. The feather gets it all out easily. I thought of that when the dirt flew up on that one launch, lol.

    Sean, I've been flying in 5G and my drone behaves so much better!!!! Wow! I have pushed the Mavic Air out past 3,000 feet and didn't get any issues. I keep thinking that this wider band should not let me out perform the 2G frequencies! I am really baffled! I expect to go further in 2G. I hope others will drop in and continue to elaborate and debate the distances with the frequency! One other thing... I just picked up some Master Airscrew Stealth Propellers for this drone and it seems to perform better and his less noise! Hope you get to try them soon. Thanks again!

    Thanks for putting this together Sean.
    Originally, and for no good reason, I was assuming that "auto" meant auto-SWITCHING as needed while flying. What I'm now wondering is if it's auto-SELECT at the beginning of the flight and then it keeps that selection throughout the entire flight even if it's no longer the best channel.
    And on that point, it's seems plausible that the best conditions while near the pilot on the ground does NOT resemble the best conditions once the drone is up in the air. Different geometries, different (and less) interference with obstacles, etc.
    Finally, I see the other comment that the dB power is the same for either option (related to output power). Does it take more power from the battery to drive that 5.8 signal? Would that (or other similar reason) be why the drone defaults to the (arguably less successful) 2.4 signal (to extend battery life)?

    • @SeanOzz
      @SeanOzz  6 лет назад

      Dave those are excellent points and questions. I think it’s possible you could be onto something here.
      I never noticed my signal changing mid flight in auto mode. I was under the same impression that is what auto was suppose to do.

    • @SeanOzz
      @SeanOzz  6 лет назад

      Dave Smith I’m going to be checking my signal before take off, during, and after to see if I’m auto it ever changes.
      I’m not sure why but I was 100% under the same impression as you. I think you are really into something with your observation. I might email Dji and ask about some of those points and hope they send me a response.

    You should have volunteered your drone skills to shoot some of the wedding party. $$$$$$$$$$. I'm kind of kidding, but that sure was funny they showed up right after you talked about how solitary the place was. All kidding aside, very interesting, informative and fun stuff with terrific footage. I couldn't agree more about the fact that you have to manually go into the settings and readjust the WiFi. What the heck is auto for, then. I know, I know. The auto just gives you more choices, but.........., seems like they could work on that. I'm pulling my hair out whether to buy a Spark or an Air, and I'm leaning heavily on the Air, even though it's pushing my budget, mainly because of all the earlier problems with Spark. I still don't know if I can trust it or not, and now, I'm nervous about the Air, but I think I'm seeing more good than bad, and more about transmission problems in the congested areas like the city than out in the country. I don't really want to go out and buy a 4-hawks antenna, because it might void the warranty, plus it's kind of bulky, but thanks again for all this, and yea,,,,shoot some great footage of those beautiful mountains and put it up on You Tube. I enjoyed the footage in Austin. Very nice waterways. Marc Trainor.

    Hey really nice chilling with you in this video. One question though, how did you get such crisp footage out of 1080p 30? When i do 1080 all my footage looks like a blur but when i do 4k its sharp and all but my dang sd card even though rated for 100mbps freezes frames after 1 minute passes. Is it because you had enough light or did you upscale the drone footage?

    Good test Sean. I have my Air grounded until DJI fixes the problems that a lot of guys are having after the 0.0400 upgrade which I should not have done and it can not be turned back. On slide to take off I always click that precision take-off box and it works really well though the regular way is good too. Also they say the battery life at altitude is shorter because of the thinner air. Do you find that to be true?

    • @SeanOzz

      I’ve not done a battery length test. I will have to do that next time I fly back to sea level in Houston TX and compare that to where I live now. I might go back again in August or October.
      I have experimented with the precision take off and find it doesn’t make much difference. Here’s the video I show testing it. It’s also only beneficial for RTH use.

    Sean, 2.4 ghz and 5.8 ghz works differently. The former has lower frequency meaning it's less powerful but can get around obstacles better. The latter is higher frequency which means it'll fare better with distance but it'll suck if there's interference or obatacles in-between. Hope that helps.

    • @sandyleask92
      @sandyleask92 5 лет назад +1

      That's not all correct. 2.4 GHz microwaves have a longer wavelength than 5.8GHz microwaves which means they have better diffraction around objects like buildings and hills + better penetration through solid objects. 2.4GHz waves travel further but having a longer wavelength they can't carry the same amount of raw data than the 5.8GHz microwaves. The 2.4GHz spectrum is very heavily populated in residential areas and destructive interference of these waves will limit range in these circumstances so its very likely the 5.8Ghz band will provide better range. Out away from civilisation, the 2.4GHz band is more times than not provide better range.

    To get the best out of the Mavic Air, do not use a mobile phone on it, which transmits interfering wifi, gps and voice / data channel transceiver frequencies. Also, upgrade the vertically polarised dipole antennas fitted stock and replace either with a patch panel antenna or circular polarised antenna on the controller. In addition, phones and tablets have a lot of software constantly competing for gps, wifi and transmission on the device, and crashes are frequent with the constant DJI updates. Since having a CrystalSky, that has all stopped dead, far less and more stable updates, and does not interfere with the transmission system either

      No matter what antenna system you use the Mavic Airs true Achilles heel is its battery life 💯... With the stock setup... I can go over 3 miles one way easily... Over 2 mi and back ...which tells me that with a larger and more efficient battery system it could go that far (over 3 miles)and come back.
      And unfortunately the battery system on the mavic air is nearly impossible to "upgrade"... Without interfering with the original integrity and performance of the Drone.

      You live in the middle of no where?
      I’m pretty stoked with as busy as the town I live in is it did as well. Now if you saw part one to this I was in Austin texas in the middle of nowhere. Signal dropped like crazy. Should have been no interference. That’s why the manual override is so important.
      Be aware you’re not hooking up to a WiFi at your house or elsewhere. It’s a signal that the drone emits to your controller so you get the image. That’s all.
