- In competitive pokemon, the route 1 normal types aren't exactly known for their power. From zigzagoon, to bidoof, they tend to be underwhelming, But a few stand out above the rest. SO today, lets rank them all from worst to best.

Purposely excluded lilipup cause it doesn't feel like it's meant to the the same kind of pokemon as the others on this list from a game design perspective. But yeah wooloo was a legit fumble. C TIER.
What happened to Wooloo?
Dude... Dubwool is a freakin beast!
@@lucasorejuela8340forgot about it lol
Intimidate is pretty solid and it even gets Sand Rush to be proto-Houndstone with Howl, I think it’d make easy C tier, maybe even B 😭
Where would lilipup be on the tierlist?
Later generations make this list a little more confusing, cuz I think Lillipup and Wooloo should have been included.
Wooloo!
That's who was missing. I could not for the life of me figure out who else was missing.
Gen 9 is extra weird since Lechonk isnt a rodent. (Tho tandemaus exists)
Nah lillipup is the early game dog pokemon which is a separate category.
@@teeweezevenYou can't find Tandemaus early game
@@MaahirMomtaz12 I mean, it's catchable at level 7 before the first gym. But I also feel like being eligible for list should require the Pokémon being catchable on the first route
B2W2 Lillipup is the undisputed playthrough/nuzlocke goat. Silk scarf and return before the second gym trivializes so much of the early and mid game
It also have it's own route in speedruns
Also the GOAT in BW speedruns
The strongest Nuzlocke Rodent is Skwovet/Greedent, at least if you play with level caps. Very solid out of the gate(but not quite the best), but from the moment it becomes Greedent, it is an undying, powerful, self-healing monster of a mon that will beat every remaining battle on its own without even a lick of worry. It is a better tanky Nuzlocke mon than Snorlax, which is famously good.
Lillipup doesn't really count among these mons because it is Medium Slow as opposed to the Rodents Medium Fast, which ironically means it gets a notable level advantage over them. It's more like Normal-type Nidoran.
Ik this is sortof unrelated, but the Lillipup line is also pretty good in pixelmon. Early coverage in fairy and fang moves, good normal stab, can be ridden once it evolves, fairly common in Plains biomes, so much else going for it. I'm still using mine in the lvl 50s.
Edit: also I don't think it should count towards this video because as the comment above mine said, it's more like a normal type nidoran than the 2 stage early game normal type trope in every generation.
I think it's worth mentioning that Zigzagoon was so good in little cup that it got banned in generation 8, due to its combo of berry juice, belly drum, and E speed making it nigh unstoppable. Granted, you had to build your team around it, but if you chipped its counters enough, and got it in, you actually just won the game immediately.
Can confirm, I was a gooning menace
Fun fact: Illuminate eas buffed in gen 9 to actually have an effect, since random wild encounters no longer exist, it has, however been turned into a clone of Keen Eye, which Watchog already had, so the poor guy still doesnt have an ability
Wait, there's no more wild Pokémon encounters?
There's wild ones, you just need to come to the Pokemon or the Pokemon comes to you instead in the new games.
@@orirune3079 I think they mean there is no random encounters every wild Pokemon you fight you can see as you run in to it the over-world. So abilities that affect how often you get in to wild battles or what you battle had to be changed.
Just want to note Watchog hasnt been on the Switch at all, so they havent even gotten to use the new Illuminate😂
I wish they would just change Keen Eye and Illuminate to work like Compound Eyes
Clearly, it’s a level 1 ratatta holding a focus sash with endeavor /j
And quick attack! Don't forget about the quick attack!
Enough to strike F.E.A.R. into the hearts of many
No quick attack makes it worthless you need quick attack
Until u realize they have 2 pokemon and focus sash only works once if they didn't toxic u first
@minaashido518 not worthless, that's still doing most of the healthbar
Just not the last 1 hp
The question is who is the second strongest after Bidoof.
Foodib.
Bibarel is the second , the real question is who is the third?
@@mymiguelito9453shiny bidoof
@@lingus1382then number 4 is shiny bibarel
Would number 5 be rare marked bidoof
If there was a RUclips 2024 wrapped. My number one stream would be Furret on an escalator.
There is a youtube gaming wrapped
There IS a yt wrapped lmfao
Before this video, I never would have guessed that Ratticate was EVER a VGC staple
Yeah man, rat with the sash was a pain in the ass (if you didn’t know how to deal with it)
It was poorman Persian for teams that wanted to double up on it in RBY, as mono Normal teams did have enough strong reps to have their own little niche outside of just Chansey, Tauros and Snorlax. With every Normal type that was relevant getting access to Earthquake, Dig (in gen 1 it had same base power as Earthquake) Psychic or Ice Beam, it was also very easy to get around Gengar too.
In gen 2 the changing of crit rates made it a very mid pick even for low tiers.
In gen 3 with Guts it became its own little king wherever it could set up, and stayed there pretty reliably until gen 5 where the bulkiness in power creep got it to start really falling off. Needed more than Flame Wheel to cover Ferrothorn, man.
It's ironically still not a terrible mon even with all this power creep though. Just have better options with the same niche that it wants to do most.
Holy crap. I never realized how powerful Greedent was. I’ve never really given it much thought, aside from its surprise attack in the Crown Tundra
Is it Bidoof because it’s the strongest, or is it the strongest because it’s Bidoof?
Pokemon is the secret to natty gains confimed
Just a friendly reminder, in early Black and White Smogon meta, Bibarel shred though the OU and Ubers meta because of the ability Moody. For those unaware, Moody lowers one of your random stat by one and raises another stat by two stages at the end of the turn. So if RNG was on your side and boosted your right stats, you would win the game. It lasted only for very short time because Moody was universally banned in the entire Smogon and all tier via a clause but Bibarel made history.
And if by some miracle you managed to ko Bibarel. Then Bidoof would finish you off.
“For those unaware….”
I see what you did there😂
How? Bibarel would still need several turns of stat boosts to be able to compete with Ubers. The only way I see it is Evasion boosts.
@@BaneHydraprotect and build bulk
@@balding_blade0737 This is Ubers we're talking about. Deoxys-A and Skymin laugh at Bibarel's 79/60/60 defenses, no matter your EV spread.
Did the cat meow to let you know it isn't a city bike or because it wishes it was? This is very important for whether I stay subscribed
Ranni is undergoing city bike recruitment now
The real answer will always be Moody Bidoof, the Pokémon that is literally stronger than Arceus
You could’ve also included Wooloo since it’s also found early route
GRAAAAAAAH I KNEW I FORGOT ONE
@@MoxieBoostedYou also forgot the Lilipup line
And buneary too
@@King-of1uw buneary is in eterna forest not route 1
@@MoxieBoosted Shroodle and Grafaiai might have counted too but idk
As a wise man once said, "Diggersby tho?"
Cat meow at 15:34
Shoutouts to Bidoof who in Gen 5 had to be banned from Ubers thanks to Moody. Ok Moody was banned, not Bidoof, but it was still funny to see Bidoof 1v6 sweep Ubers teams.
0:21 omg My cat is names Ranni (best Elden Ring character) And she responded to your voice lmao
Wooo
I like the Patrat line because of performance in a Nuzlocke. Early Crunch is OP af and Hypnosis helped catch lots of teammates. That's what they were good for as far as I'm concerned.
My brother had the same experience, normal types just hit really hard in early unova
"gamefreak doesnt care about watchog, no fans care about watchog"
Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon:
Lilipup would have been to strong for this list
That's why they didn't include it.
Bibarel definitely deserved an S tier, and i can sum up why in just one word: moody. The ability so incredibly bullshit that its pretty much universally banned in pretty much every format that even tiny little bidoof becomes a pretty major threat more often than not! Moody is just an ubers tier level ability, especially in earlier gens when it could still boost evasion, dear lord in those games its more broken than Zacian EVER could have been! You could take gen 8 Zacian and make its attack boost a full on belly drum +6, and it STILL wont match the levels of bullshit that gen 5-7 moody could reach!
I always love getting one of your videos on my feed. You're one of the rare youtubers where I can feel the love in your competitive videos. I hope you're enjoying making them too
Rate Incineroars. Basically, how strong Incineroar has been in different formats.
1:47
You read my mind
I was just about to comment "linoone B teir, Zigzagoon S tier" it was my very first pokemon (besides mudkip) and raccoons are my favorite animal.
Too bad the design got dumpstered and even galar couldn't save them
Zigzagoon has the best HM partner, ans I generally shifted the same one around playthrus.
Ziggy has seen more Elite 4 matches than 3 Charizards combined.
scott the woz likes watchhog
He looks like him that's why
Every mon is somebody's favorite. It's like Jaiden Animation's story about Manyyke. The card designers had a boss who loved Gengar, but Mantyke fell thru the cracks and only have 2 cards.
Personally my weird pick is Spearrow and Fearrow. I always used them as a kid.
Thinking about being the guy who designed Watchhog reminds me about how grateful I am that I’m not the guy who designed Watchhog
Hello Stardust, fancy seeing you here
I ran eviolite Galar linoone a little bit in SwSh, and for a 100 base speed dark type mon with taunt, parting shot, knock off, and quick feet facade
I liked how it could deal with prankster mons that relied on status move like toxic, T wave, or duel screens setters like grimmsnarl and whimsicott
This video wouldve done crazy numbers if it was also an iceberg and uploaded during peak covid times
2018 pokémon videos are back the rent has never been this high 🔥🔥
Wo chien mention at 0:44
Lmfao
1:40 the SNES Jurassic Park music has me grooving to that nostalgia, hella vibes
You apparently neglected to mention Bibarel's other Ability - Moody. It is an absolutely broken Ability, especially in Gen 5. Every turn it raises a random stat (including accuracy or evasion) by two stages, and drops another by one stage. If you give it the Leftovers item along with Substitute, Protect and two attacking moves, you can sit there and fish for the boosts you want by alternating between Protect and Substitute, then once you're all boosted up, completely demolish the entire opposing team.
Moody is such a beastly Ability that even Bidoof terrorized Smogon's Ubers tier.
I don’t know why but lately I can’t stop binging your videos
4:18 Man do I have good news for you
Pure Power and Huge Power applying before or after natures DOESN'T MATTER. They are both multipliers. What matters is that Huge and Pure Power apply after both EV's and (which you didn't mention) IV's.
"Did I forget anything big" WOOLOO i don't care if it's D tier, it absolutely fits
Fun Fact: Choice Band Diggersby can and will one shot Primal Groudon. I ran it in a funny team back in my Gen 7 Singles days, and that's how I know this is a thing
Regigigas: who are YOU?
Diggersby with huge power: DEATH!
Wait I got more.
Diggersby to arceus, I see no god up here OTHER THAN ME.
I’ve always grouped in Tandemaus with these, even if it’s found slightly later
We all saw Incineroar as S tier coming.
I didn't know you were a Zigzagoon connoisseur as well, I love that little fella so much, doesn't matter the game I always use one of them at some point
it's always surprising how deceptively strong Linoone can be
0:46 fantastic background music choice. Best must in S3&K
While ice cap isn’t my favorite song, (that goes to sky sanctuary) ice cap is still amazing and prob my second favorite song in the game.
I would love to see you do this with the route one birds! 💯
This could be summarized in
"Everyone from gen 6 onwards but Toucannon is really good, or at least good"
so like just talonflame and corviknight?
He’ll forget 3 of them though
@BenjiAndStuff Kilowattrel was a decent Tail Wind setter in some regulations of the early Scarlet and Violet, so at least it has that going for it
6:50 HM friend??
Slave
More like Hm slave
Slave gets you demonitized
Didn't expect Moxie Boosted to be against slavery but I welcome the idea
I think it’d be cool if Bibarel and Diggersby were the one route 1 Rodents to get an additional evolution in the future like I could imagine Steel/Water and Electric Ground going hard on both.
Zigzagoon is ADORABLE in the thumbnail!
I would love to see such video about regional early birds ❤
This man included Fearow but excluded Lillipup
I watched the videos in reverse order
Alolan Raticate is such a banger design though.
Somewhere in the middle of Sword and Shield I finally got a shiny Diggersby for myself, it is unironically my favorite route 1 normal type and I've wanted a shiny one since gen 6 but never went out of my way for it, then out of nowhere I just stumble into one in a raid den. Naturally, I named it Big Chungus and then gave it an ability patch once the Crown Tundra came out and I can safely say I've demolished my friends with a meme
I don't dislike Watchog and Patrat.
I don't love them, but I have nothing against them whatsoever, I respect Watchog for being a tough gym leader ace with that first retaliate just nuking a pokemon.
Hey, someone that likes Watchog here.
Watchog had its original gimmick being status flinger, as Hypnosis and Thunder Wave made it a Pokemon that can pull either option as needed. Naturally it was pretty underwhelming.
What got me to like it wasn't gen 5, but gen 6, where it gained access to the hilarious move; Rototiller. Due to it being such a weak Pokemon, in doubles it often gets ignored as players want to delete the big damage mon on your team. Mega Sceptile LOVES Watchog, as Thunder Wave boosts its sp attack and Rototiller boosts both its physical and special attack, giving you a lot of options to boost your ally regardless of what set up your opponent uses.
It's a very frail mon, but it's the only Rototiller user that is not weak to grass itself, is immune to ghost where Mega Gengar was everywhere and isn't weak to poison.
It's best to think of Watchog as a pure support Furret, that supports in ways that are different than Furret's support options.
As someone else who loves Watchog, I just think their design is funny and memorable and idk shit about battles lol
A definitely well thought listing. Still, Furret may not be the strongest of the route one normals, but its definitely my favourite.
"There's favoritism in this video"
yea, and? throw that funny zigzag boi at the top now
As a very minor correction, Illuminate DOES now have an in-battle effect, and it was introduced with the Teal Mask DLC of Gen IX.
The effect is...the exact same as Keen Eye (can't have accuracy lowered, bypass evasion stage increases against opponents).
So Watchog has the Delibrd situation of two abilities with exactly the same effect.
8:04 I like Patrat and Watchog
my favorite videos of yours are when you talk about pokemon so bad you give up on talking VGC
like “top tier route one, B tier” is objectively hilarious
I know you're a VGC channel, but not acknowledging that Furret has 600% usage in the FU (Furret Used) tier to keep my goat out of S tier is disappointing.
1:49 I'll be so fr with you, I actually used to hate Zigzagoon because of how much they haunted me in Omega Ruby. Linoone however was my goat during my playthrough.
Neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
I did some Zigzagoon only runs and loved them! They have so much diversity in their move pool with debuffs, setups and very strong special/physical attacks. Thinking back gives me the itch again!
Wow! This video concept bangs! Thanks, RUclips!
In singles I love stoutland in low tiers, sand rush, good offense options, and not having common sand team weaknesses.
That jurassic park SNES overworld music really takes me back, damn
zigzagoon no question ask it can learn all the important HMs and can get you items... Oh competitive nvm
Still adorable though
Love that spiky little trash puppy
Imagine posting a video with Ranni's adorable meowing without any actual video footage.
I like Hoenn Zigzagoon for the ability pickup but I can see why competitively it’s not that good but I really love the ability of pickup.
Another thing to comment hurray:
Lingering Aroma does of course remove Intimidate like you mentioned, but it doesn't ever prevent its effect, as you just regain intimidate when switching out.
Best support mons that arent Incineroar would be a great video from a singles/doubles POV.
I’d like a similar video about bugs. But only if you include Lokix and Spidops and they get their own tier called “S, they deserved better”
kinda tempted making a joke about how gumshoos not being s rank is just fake news, but I feel I'm either too late or too early to make it atm...
I think... you're Rhydon time.
I like Bibarel solely from when I used to play Gen 7 PU and would try to sweep with it. I think the set was simple/power herb, skull bash/waterfall/aqua jet/swords dance. If they let you get the +2 defense/+4 attack up in 2 turns it would just win most games. Miss those days
yeah its banned in smogon, but bidoof and bibarel got moody so that's something they can abuse
I straight up forgot Lechonk existed lmao I was like "where is Maushold?"
With the high stats the early route mons have gotten, I'd love to see the other route one mons get stat boosts of 30-40
so the early-game bug and regional birds?
imagine the research moxie would have to do to make a VGC tier list of all of Ash's pokemon
Zigzagoon has pickup, so free rare candies, nuggets, ultra balls, etc.
Extremely useful in general play.
As a skwovet enjoyed my first vgc team was greedent belly drum trick room at the end of sw/sh. If you pulled off the drum you basically had a third restricted, which wasn't too hard because my opponent was usually busy trying to kill my actual restricteds.
Watchog is my GOAT for shiny hunting
I do hope one day game freak just decides to go nuclear and make the early rodent one of the strongest non-legendaries of a generation
I used Gumshoos in my Violet playthrough, and I was devastated to learn Hyper Fang was wiped from existence. Probably its best option for Strong Jaw-boosted STAB...and it's still stuck using Body Slam and its coverage fangs. Gumshoos wasn't in Gen 8, so this was its one opportunity outside Sun and Moon to use it. That's a shame since Tera-Psychic Psychic Fangs and Hyper Fang would have genuinely been fun to use...almost justifying how slow and frail it was, and just barely not strong enough to score knockouts. ...Fly high, "Ronald Dump;" you did your best...
My Bibarel in Gen 3 carried me through the end of the solo campaign.
normal/dark vs calyrex shadow rider 💀💀💀
dude i was so sad after realising zigzagoon doesnt evolve to a big fluffy boy
I like the Patrat line, design wise.
Note that Bibarel (and bidoof) are banned from Ubers in singles if they’re using their other ability (moody) which makes both of them broken (yes, even moody bidoof was too broken for ubers).
I actually don't mind Watchog. I used it in a playthrough (which is just about the only place it could find any use) and it was kinda neat. I am disappointment they made it a pure normal type when the glowing eyes/stripes on its body could of alluded to a psychic or dark subtyping.
I would love to see it get an evolution. The big idea that comes to mind is making it super tall and having the eyes shoot a spotlight, like its a tall watch tower in a prison yard, grazing the grass for problem pokemon.
You know I thought I was crazy for thinking I heard DKC1 in the background, very subtle, very demure.
Me. It's me. I like Watchhog. Lenora put in the work both in the games and the manga to make me remember this high-visibility vest-wearing grump.
I like Gumshoos too :>
One thing about Diggersby is that Huge Power was its HA making it a pain to use in a playthrough
Furret will always be my bias. I played HeartGold and I only used 6 Furret and I beat the game, despite slightly under-levelled against Red
Furret is one of those mons that basically every ROM Hack buffs. Radical Red gives it Adaptability Extremespeed, Odyssey gives it Fur Coat (very useful in an all Doubles game), Elite Redux lets it use Speed for damage calculation with contact moves...
Bibarel's simple ability is quite nice, but the moody ability gave him a legitimate role in uber before is was BANNED. for this feat alone, it should be at least A tier
Obstagoon and Diggersby tho!
Finally! SOMEONE who knows the (reasonable) Big Boi Energy of Greedent, there is 1 other set you didn't talk about though... (Mainly usable in Doubles, and for surprise factor) Stuffed Cheeks - Cheek Pouch - Petaya Berry (+1 SpAtk) running Tera Poison Belch, if you can get a Substitute up before pressing Stuffed Cheeks this thing Does Not Die I've legit tanked 3 Ground Attacks with a Sub using this "Which One Of You Fellers' is the Real Dirty Dan?!" lookin ahh!
With Body Press of course to take advantage of the +2 Defense, you can invest in only SpAtk and Defense for an Offensive Wall. (Of course this isn't some perfect unkillable build and really benefits from Trick Room, not many other things outslow Base 20 Speed)
Side note Oinkologne is the only other Pokemon to learn Stuffed Checks alongside Swalot since Gen 9's addition to them, and both also learn Belch as well Body Press... Tera Poison Swalot does abuse this set a fair bit more for obvious reasons. (Though without the Massive HP and surprise factor of Poison Typing)
Spectacular video and happy new year 🎆🎈🎊
There’s a great team made by Vapicuno that uses Linoone and Gardevoir to get over 1500 ELO on Gen III OU. Worth checking out
I beat Byron using a Bibarel after all my team had fainted by getting ridiculously lucky with paralysis
