- Earlier this summer, we attended The RPF Prop Party and showcase, a gathering of replica prop builders in southern California to share their projects. One of those projects is a pair of Nike Air Mag shoes from Back to the Future Part II, created by RPF member Brad Fyfe. Brad shows us his shoe conversion project and a pair of official Air Mags that were auctioned off by Nike for charity. Still working on that power lacing!

What makes these truly special is that aesthetically they were the most realistic part of Back to the Future II.

Super psyched to build these. I bought a pair from Nike in the 2011 auction and they are easily one of my most treasured possesions. In fact I cringe whenever I see Brian Wilson playing baseball in his or Kanye double flairing. Granted, I get it, money is no object for those guys, but for me, Air Mags (certainly ones in such limited supply) are works of art. However, I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to be able to wear my Nikes out dancing and such. So, not wanting to wait for the 2015 general power lacing release (which will most likely happen in October), I started looking at all the available Chinese versions and all their cool original colorways. Now that I know there's a vibrant support community for moding them, I'm totally gonna do it. Thanks so much, Tested. You guys are awesome as usual.

Benbot There could be licensing issues with Universal. Wouldn't be surprised if there's some complicated cross-branding legal agreements going on between the two.
someusername121 You are pretty close. Actually since Universal released the "licensed" crappy versions of the MAG's, they subsequently pissed off NIKE. None the less, Nick Fox is correct that they never intended to make a NIKE MAG shoe with self lacing.

Auto Young What I mean is that, NIKE will not be releasing a "self lacing" version of the NIKE MAG. They WILL release a Back to the Future "INSPIRED" self lacing shoe this year.

I'm one of the nerds over on the RPF involved in some of the modding, and this is the rumor that refuses to die.

i got a pair of the official bttf but unbranded ones and they are pretty great for $100 I would say if you was wanting to make them accurate that would be a great place to start.
If you dont want the Paint on the midsole to crack you have to use flexible paint (not dye) for leather from Angelus Brand for example .

If I recall correctly, tear resistance is actually different from the durometer rating, which measures the hardness of the rubber. They're somewhat interrelated, but changing one won't necessarily help worth the other.
those are epic, whether it be the Chinese ones or the ones made by him or Nike. Just to see them n real life is enough for me. Hopefully one day they will enough demand to make trainers like these so everyone can afford.

"Tacky lights" that are controlled by the user... so just don't turn them on - problem solved...

Why is everyone knocking this guy? Even Nike has admitted their version isn't intended for regular use. This guy has found a creative way to make his own everyday WEARABLE version without beating up his $5-7k authentics. Props.

I know that lots of people are obsessed with the NIKE MAGS, but I am wondering if anyone is working on or makes the 1982 Nike Bruin Trainers worn by MJF in all three films.

So, all in all just get the Chinese knockoff versions, create a mold and use a transparent silicone rubber resin, swap out the LEDs and power it with a piezoelectric transducer into a rechargeable battery small yet efficient enough to take the load of walking/running.
John Carter The battery doesn't have to be that small. Most of the modded versions are using a 9V-sized rechargeable Li-Ion battery in the sole.
