- Nike announced earlier this week that it will be releasing a new edition of the Nike Mags, its self-lacing shoes inspired by Back to the Future. There are only 89 pairs, which will be raffled off with proceeds benefiting the Michael J. Park Foundation‘s research on Parkinson’s disease. TechCrunch got a chance to (briefly) try on a pair of Mags and discuss the technology with Nike Senior Innovator Tiffany Beers.

The speed of the sensors determining when the shoe is "tight" on a totally arbitrary input (the foot - only known dimension is foot length w/ 'shoe size')
not a simple engineering problem since it deals with ergonomics, safety, and random users.
Imagine a pair of auto-sizing police handcuffs ever "NOT" being a problem to the public... :)
Remember those "blood pressure" machines, back in the 80's, that were available for free use in pharmacies of grocery stores back in the 80's?
Do you remember how fucking long that took to adjust to safely measure your internal pressure? It was a fucking century.
Imagine the delayed 'true' measurement of tension when dealing with elastic materials & flesh itself.
So it is probably slow to make sure the tension sensor has enough time to confirm.
If there were a preset button to establish a 'profile' or some shit like that, they might be able to blame it on the user if they overtighten their own shoe too much, and still give the user the freedom to specify the exact tightness and time to constrict the shoe at.
Sorry about the boring response, but I think it's all pretty logical.

I don't understand why Nike refuses to mass produce these. Maybe once the self-lacing is prominent and cheap enough for 'normal' people, but I'd buy a pair of the back to the future shoes in a heartbeat for like £150

because most people (rightfully) think it's a pretty dumb shoe, in a lower price range, enthusiasts/fans would probably find it less appealing. exclusive and rare aspect is super artificial regarding sneakers.

I'm very disapointed. It's sounds like a drill. And its slow. Compare it to the movie. I think it is possible to build the shoe that work like that one in the movie. I mean, you step in and it makes two moves and the shoe is on your foot. Nike, contact me please.

honestly the only ones you can get would be the universal studios licensed pair minus the nike logo which you can get for another 20 bucks
So glad we at least got these self lacing shoes by 2015 if not the other futuristic technology from the fake version of 2015 that Marty McFly and Doc visit. This will save me time putting my own shoes on. I want to buy them already.
Also the closest thing we have to those hoverboards that glide in the air are those single wheeled motor powered electric skateboards called hoverboards which are motion sensitive and in a way replacing regular skateboards, so we have made a few advancements in tech so far, but other than that we still live pretty basic.
I would love to have a pair of those for basketball 👍🏻

Fatih Kan i think faster lacing would be a risk. Can you imagine how bad it would be if a mechanical problem happened where it started to cut off circulation? Now increase the speed to match the movie and you have a serious health risk on your hands.

They weren't accomplished with CGI, the mags were a practical effect. What you don't see in the film are the cables running from the bottom of the shoes to operators off camera. Some clever cutting from the cable operated shoes to the wearable prop shoes that Michael J Fox actually walks around in and you've got a great illusion.
The movie Nike Mags look a lot different from Today's Nike Mags. The Design is much Different, If you look at the Nike Tick on the side of the Shoes, The movie one is pointed to the back of the shoe, as the shoes today are pointed more up. There are much more Differences, but I will always like the Movie shoes. This Video shows the Movie Shoes.
