  • This time we are tackling a different way of doing a detachable cable mod on some beyerdynamics. We are going for dual entry ;)
    This allows them to take a focal or sony style cable with two 3.5mm sockets - the advantage of doing it this way is that you have an equal length of cable going to each side of the headphones and some people prefer this style of cable for the looks. Any way - it is both harder and easier than the single sided mod - harder as you have to drill extra holes and seal up unused one and easier as the wiring is more straight forward

    Beyerdynamics are very customizable. I still think the DT-880s are the best budget open backs.

    I like dual sided entry because a lot of the time headphones break in the inaccessible spots inside the phones.

    9:30 it's going to sound weird but in a mechanics shop I used to work at, they had a similar problem that you have with your "ghost", it turn out he was a trickster, he keep pulling off pranks on people, hiding tools and stuff and that kind of thing, he even turn on the alarm in some of the company trucks we stored during the night on the back of the warehouse.
    To make a long story short, according to local legends, what we where experiencing was an "elf", they told us not to disturb him because that would bring bad luck the the business but if we let it be, good things where going to come to the entire enterprise, and it did!!!!, so I will recommend that you let it be and see if it brings you good fortune too, when you actually have to take action is when it starts doing malicious things.

    Thanks for sharing this how to video, I'm interested to do so to my ATH-ad900 but I have a question. DT880 and AD900 are the same with a single-entry cable going in to the "main can" and there's a thinner wire goes from the chip to the second can. If we do dual 3.5mm connector like in this video, we are bypassing whatever the chip does to the other can. Is there going to be any impact on audio quality? What does the chip actually do besides separate left/right channel? (I assume that's their main function?) Thank you in advance!

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 года назад +1

      They are not that complicated ;) there is not a "chip" it is just a PCB used to join the wires together

    Has anyone done this with two types of connectors in the same headphones? any opinions on this?

    • @CustomCans

      I have, but it is not the kind of thing you need to do normally, most connections can be adapted to each other. We used to have a pair with loads of different connections to test different tpes of cables .. it as cool and looked mad but that was a verry speciffic use case

    Thanks for a great video. I'm interested in modifying these headphones with a single 4.4mm balanced socket and making two cables, one with two 4.4mm jacks and one with a 3.5mm jack to a 4.4mm jack, in order to be able to use them with the 4.4mm balanced output on an Ifi Zen DAC and also with standard 3.5mm or 6.35mm sockets. I've looked around to see if there are any existing cables to do this, but as I can't find anything it occurred to me that maybe I'm missing something and that perhaps this would be a bit daft. What are your thoughts?

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 года назад

      I would measure up first - 4.4mm sockets are quite big and there may not be room without it hitting the driver.
      If you are able to do that mod you should be able to make some cables to go with them at the same time ;) there is no reason why it would not work it is just that there are no headphones on the market with 4.4 sockets which is why nobody is making cables. It would have to be a DIY job

    • @mrcheese3981
      @mrcheese3981 2 года назад

       @Custom Cans Thanks for your help. In fact I've just been looking at the cost and availability of 4.4mm connectors and frankly at that price I'm not surprised they're not catching on. It seems most people that use balanced outputs seem to use headphones with dual entry, but I'm thinking that's not very practical, having a cable under your chin ;)
      So I was thinking maybe I'll try either with a single 5 pin mini XLR or with two 3.5mm, but ON THE SAME SIDE. Meaning I can still stay balanced, but with cheaper and more readily available parts, and not have wires all over my face :)
      Just one more question, if I do go for the XLR option - on the data sheet for the Rean mini XLR sockets (I presume it's the RT4 MPR you use? - I'll be using the RT5 MPR) it doesn't give details of the thread or thread diameter; would you be able to illuminate me?

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  2 года назад

      @@mrcheese3981 there is no need for a 5 pin as there are only 4 wires inside the headphones. We do sell a kit with everything you need to do a single sided 4 pin balanced conversion

    I may do this to my DT1990, but I do like the single entry cable, decisions, decisions. I wonder if its possible to use a switched 3 pole 3.5mm socket on one side and have the best of both worlds?

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  3 года назад +1

      We normally swap the 3 pin for a 4 pin on the DT1990, then you can used them with balanced amps - but... I reckon putting a 4pin mini in both sides woul be the best looking option if you want to go dual sided. Then you could use Audeze style cables with them.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  3 года назад

      @@fotocrodo It may be fixable. If you over heated the connection and it came away it may have broken the voice coil wire. There are very thin wires as thin as a hair going from the base of the contact to the voice coil - you may be able to solder that back together and glue the contact back in place - i would say it is 50/50 whether it will work on not
