  • Follow Eddie Van Halen around his 'office' for two hours while he lights up his guitar and the world during Van Halen's 2012 tour. I shot this in 1080p at 59.96 frames per second. It's been available for many years as a blu-ray (1080p) encoded at 30 fps. To update this (Oct 2023), I color corrected it (just a bit), added some contrast, and gave the saturation a small boost. But most importantly, I encoded it in its native 59.96 fps format. Watching it with the aforementioned adjustments and at its native frame rate makes it really sparkle IMHO.

Yes, that was my initial thought, EXACTLY! The guy filming this had the presence of mind and wherewithal to focus intently on Eddie the entire time - the result is pure GOLD. Someone please erect a monument in his honor, because this is a priceless gem that not only pays homage to the king but also honors his die-hard fans, some of which are actual guitar players who have invested countless hours of practice, ATTEMPTING to perfect these masterpieces (like myself). I was riveted to my screen when I first saw this, thinking only a player would record this event in this exact manner, and we all owe him a debt of gratitude. I salute you sir, as do all of us players and intensely loyal fans - which, judging from what I've observed from even a cursory glance at the comment section appears to include all of us. I especially appreciate the video clarity of the close-ups of Eddie's solos and the decision to hone the focus on Eddie, because let's face it, that's what us True fans really want any way, no?

@@30pitchcleaver When he does the super-fast tremolo picking, he uses 3 fingers, index, middle and thumb. It's weird. Rest of the time it seems like he holds it normally, or tucks it in his fingers to use his thumb. Not a lot of hybrid picking. I admittedly haven't watched the whole video, was skipping around to check out different riffs.

❤ Awesome video work brother! I saw "Day at the office " and thought wtf and then get this AMAZING footage and audio, and also as a guitar player, of exactly what I always wanted a concert video to be! Got to hang with Edward twice (also signed my guitar twice and Sammy signed it once! Second time we were on the loading ramp in Tucson and Eddie came up and I asked if he would sign it and he said sure and grabbed it and looked at it seeing EVH from 1984 and said "I already signed it!" so I said sign it again! He laughed and signed it EdVHOU812 then Sammy came up and wanted to sign it and signed it Sammy 812). Thank you sir for this awesome video! RIP Eddie ❤

It's like DLR is mentally ill or something. He doesn't even TRY. He just rambles through all these great songs. What a shame.

Yeah I really like the way the cameraman focused on Eddie so tenaciously .almost like he understood the importance of it with the future unknown.his little film here I feel is of great historical importance and as the years go on I think it will be the feeling for most of the world especially the musically inclined and guitarist of the world.no kidding the value of this film rises with every like and every day that goes by .not kidding here.this is a damn national treasure I love Dave, but glad to see only Eddie.
And omg when I bought the cassette tape on the brand new album I was light years ahead of my age group since I had heard something Eddie played somewhere and when I heard the guitar tone ,sound style,it energized me and I knew everything this dude played would be good .never heard of vh before.and when I heard "everybody want some....I want some too"lyric I just fell out .loved every song on the album.i think it was first album I ever bought .I was like 6th grade.i wrote that lyric on my notebook.and one day my teacher noticed it and sent me to the principals office...and he actually gave me 7" licks" with a wicked 5inch wide 1/2 inch thick hard maple paddle he would have the 7th grade shop teacher get his classes to custom make for him then wrap with clear 3inch wide tape, then drill holes 1/4inch round staggered and spaced every inch across the ass impact zone.to decrease the wind resistance so he could swing harder.and the principal was 6 foot 4 345obs!yeah he had a real issue with loving to infkict pain on small kids .he had the paddles sent over on the busses doin the routs since elem was 6th grade and lower.hr hufh was 7-9 across town he had 3 new ones perweek sent.and you could find the broken ones laying on top of open trash bins while standing in lines for bathroom outside his office.and it hurt evert time evert kick so bad.ifta noved to nych he just added another .yeah he was nuts. Was fired for it when I graduated high school but he tire my ass up almost every day.abd I deserved it mostly .when I was at the mall I found a van halens t shirt and on the back it said everybody wants some . I want some too.and I bought it and wore it right to school 2 weeks after I got sent for writing on notebook I had already gotten many licks since then and when I got sent for the shirt he just looked at me and said "I already knew your about the most toughest assed kid ive ever had.but now I know your also about the most stubborn "..I look back at him about to whack my aas and said"I can thank you for that sir...after going to jr. High and high school i was immune to any form of paddling.and they always gave you a choice of paddling or detention. I even had to pretend like it hurt so they wouldn't give me detention or expelled for 3 days.but I swear I didn't even feel it after what I had been through .

I have his Matte Black Wolfgang guitar but in Ivory. It’s a desert island guitar for sure!! But this video is great because do you notice how he constantly checks the volume knob to make sure it’s on full? That’s because he liked the low resistance volume potentiometer. He liked the low resistance for all the volume tricks. It works great for that but because it’s so easy to turn, it gets bumped while playing and you have to check to make sure it’s on full when you want it to be. I like seeing him do it too because I have to do it and it’s nice to see I’m not the only one. The king himself has to do it as well.
Great video of up close playing!!

One more thought. Other then having the speed and fluidity of his playing skills, if you want to sound like Eddie you have to learn how to mute strings with your right and left hand. Muting all the strings you don’t want to ring out. His muting is 100% a key to his sound. Watch how he does it in this video.

Great video but just like back in 84 the music is spot on but the vocals aren’t, David was quite the showman but well never be in any top rock vocalist list

@@followingnazarene Yes, on a Strat it happens, on a Les Paul not as much but on his guitars the wind will blow and the volume knob will move.
