It needed to be an Ironman match!!! So when Ostrich does a styles clash off the top rope. He pins MJF 123 for a pinfall. This is where it made sense. But the kick outs at 2.9 constantly from these devastating moves. As you say the no selling. Takes away from the product and match.
Same. One thing I didn't like about this match was that there was more selling after the match than during it. Like the last 10-15 minutes, they were moving like they hadn't been wrestling for 45+ minutes.
Wouldn't you agree that in this context an official Ironman match makes sense where there are some pinfalls? They are devaluing these moves.
No matter how good the match was, listening to that commentary team for an hour sounds like hell.
They honestly did practically ruin the match.

@perryco34 Hogan v Goldberg was probably the most memorable tv match of all time, and one of the most epic moments in wrestling. Whether they could have made more money or not is up for debate. But this wasn’t hogan v Goldberg. They didn’t advertise it as iron man (if at all), it wasn’t for the world title, it wasn’t the culmination of years long storyline. Not many would buy a PPV for a MJF Osprey international title match regardless.

Little Rock resident here… I saw exactly one regional television ad for the LR Dynamite show last week outside of AEW programming. I forgot it was even happening until Jim opened the segment.
Same. I live an hour away in Stuttgart and I literally had no clue it was happening until someone there sent me pics.
Same! Live in Conway. Had they promoted this match weeks in advance instead of a week, myself and others would have definitely went.
Same; was actually saddened about the audio fucking up multiple times in the TV replay.
They advertised on raw. I was at dynamite 250 and this match was great. The rest of the show was meh. It was cool seeing darby rappeling from the ceiling. I saw a ton of advertising on Facebook that had moxley front and center (who wasn't there) and no mention of MJF WHO MOST PEOPLE WOULD RATHER SEE. There was a little over 2000 people in attendance. Kinda sad

Besides it being too long for free on TV, the match had choreographed routines, no count out, no DQ, too many false finishes, 10 hospitalization angles, dumb story about the tiger driver, and a flat ending. Jim always hate these things but its his boy MJF so its ok. Shits ridiculous

It was an Ironman match without it being an Ironman match which is extremely stupid!!!! When you take a styles clash from the top rope. You get pinned 123. You take a fall. Let MJF win 3 falls to 2 in an Ironman. Come on!

Michaels and Cena has a 47 minute match on Raw in '07. Match was great and there wasn't a dull moment throughout, no moves or kickouts for the sake of doing it. Their match should be a guideline for long matches and timing/selling.

The lack of consistency with the rules killed it for me. Fighting into the crowd for 3 minutes and going through a table didn't add anything to this match and just served to undermine the ref and the rules.

Being a camera guy in AEW has to be the hardest thing ever, because you only got one side, you can’t pan up, you can’t pan to the dark side of the ring, so if there is a lot of moves in a bad side they got to miss it to maintain the sense that AEW has packed house when everyone knows it hasn’t been a packed house in over 3yrs.

I'm disappointed at Corny liking this match and showing his bias. It was long and convoluted. If MJF wasn't part of this crap of a match, he would have destroyed it for what it was. The over the top selling and acting, along with the countless flips and dives made me hate bith wrestlers with every passing minute.

Jim and Brian are losing credibility by showing their Bias, MJF had 1 good feud in AEW (Punk) 1 Rushed feud with no real payoff (Cody) and 1 botched feud with potential (Wardlow)
Everything else has been abysmal (Jericho, Cole, Samoa Joe, Garcia etc.)

Long wrestling matches in AEW usually hold ratings well, along as stars are in it. Their long garbage matches lose ratings regardless
I didn’t love this match. And if MJF wasn’t in it, Jim wouldn’t have either. These guys almost spent half of an hour long match outside of the ring. The ref was rendered completely feckless. He just stood there and watched these guys spend minutes outside the ring on multiple occasions. At one point MJF took punches from an 8 year old girl in the crowd. If this was Moxley instead of MJF or almost any other wrestler on the roster, Jim and Brian would have crapped all over this. Not to mention the commentary team is brutal. I really like these two wrestlers, but this was not their best work. They look good and there was definitely stuff to like in this match. But the constant trips outside the ring along with kicking out of everything hurt this match.
Did anyone catch the referee at the end just magically get off the rope and make the count before the clock expired? If you’re hurt, you can’t just turn and make a PERFECT 3-count 😹 … no delay in the count or anything
I miss Barton Collesium. Simmons Area has changed hands several times and the first wrestling card they had was a WCW Nitro in November of 1999

@@option3590 I Agree i still think the Punk MJF Feud is the best feuds of the last 10 years because of both of those guys... also because of the whole MJF backstory going back to his own mockumentary... And with the Topic it just was a general relevant story that worked as a story in the ring and the culture around it. A young man who experienced bullying and antisemitism, became despite being set up as the cliche of a very hateable fratboy, a very relatable heel, while his childhood hero who did not live up to the expectations, had to ask himself if he has really become what he never wanted to be, only to realize that the bootm line is at an end, despite all the empathy a constant cheat like MJF has experienced that he needs to be taught life lessons. No wrestling story not even the current feud of Punk vs Drew is as a topic that relevant. Bullying is something that many fans will have experienced, so the identification aspect is important as well as all the questions asked in the Feud around the subject like punk questioning in the Story himself. Nothing has made me as emotionally invested in wrestling as this Feud. It remains a beacon of how great and generally relevant wrestling can be as storytelling, as opposed to reality TV trash like a Chris Jericho or the Bucks do...(OMG I hate their bad acting *1) and the idiots who defend their shit as entertaining cringe. That is what AEW should try to approach again being better as an entertainment product than fucking reality trash TV.
*1 the bad unrealistic stilted intonation when they're acting... which makes any suspension of disbelief impossible because it overemphasizes supposedly wanting to say: watch out now it's supposed to be totally funny because we talk like the cliche of something funny and even though we know, that you know it's unfunny, we're trying to force feed a segment like this on you exactly with the spite of having to laugh because we're presenting ridiculousness.
Hey Jim, explain the psychology behind a heel wrestling for 59 minutes then cheating, when he could have just done it after 5 minutes? Makes no sense.
5mins in won’t get the job done most of the time. The face needs worn down to even get caught off guard by it, just like a finisher.
Plus the story of this particular match/feud was about AEW veteran MJF wanting to show Osprey up as not-all-that-great. It was more ego-driven than usual, so he had incentive to beat him at his own game… riiiiiiiight up until the last possible moment, where MJF finally admitted to himself that he couldn’t with seconds to spare and that any victory was better than a moral victory. You’re 100% right that he COULD have done it anytime, but he was pocketing it as the Emergency Plan B on principle.
These guys kicked out of EVERYTHING. Piledrivers, super piledrivers, styles clashes, super styles clashes, super hidden blades, heat seekers, dives thru a table from the top rope, etc etc. why ever do a finisher again? They seem to do as much damage as a chop or a kick. That’s why I didn’t like this match
yet jim sucked this off cuz his boy MidJF is in it. if the Young Bucks did the 100% same exact match he would be sh**ting all over it for the reasons you mentioned. Jim is so fake sometimes.

This match was atrocious. They both looked like nothing, did stuff that amounted to nothing, and took up 60 minutes so nobody else did nothing
It amounted in a title change and a lot of the moment-to-moment work had clear consequences and payoff, so even if we disagree on wrestler “looks” you’re gonna have to elaborate on the “amounts to” part.
This was prob the best match we'll ever see on AEW programming period.
