    WCW should’ve just booked an injury angle after Goldberg won the title. The NWO injure Goldberg and he vacates the title. Hogan gets it back while Goldberg trains off-air for six months to a year. Goldberg returns and regains the title. Then build a program between a properly trained Goldberg against Bret Hart. The finish is that Bret Hart ends Goldberg’s streak.

    (And before someone says “it was different in the 80s”, I’ll say yeah, in the early 2000s when Hogan got another run with the WWF title as a face, it was a different decade than the 80s.

    At the time when they aired Goldberg vs Hogan on Nitro for free, they were so desperate to get one over in the ratings against Raw. It just goes to show that WCW didn't have any structure or long-term planning, that it was just one big mess. Look at Bret Hart.
    I remember following both companies at the time and thinking how insignificant Bret Hart felt like during his tenure there. He became a nameless mid-carder.

    • @MarvinT0606
      @MarvinT0606 2 месяца назад +5

      That was always the problem with WCW. They could never snap-out of their mania to fight the WWF and followed them step by step BUT ignoring their own strengths as a promotion. They took in WWF talent while letting many of their homegrown guys languish. They won 83 weeks in ratings but lost the promotion war.
      Compare that to ECW who didn't care too much about who they were competing with and refined their brand to an artform.

      But when you have guys like Curt Henig, Piper, Flair, etc all feeling like any other person .. damn lol. WCW had so much talent that they didn't know what to do with. Plus, coupled with the fact as you said, their younger roster just languished, yeah, WCW was a mess.

    I see Starrcade '97 as the beginning of the end. The first big crack in the armor, that started the snowball rolling. Eric having no plan to end the nWo storyline, instead expanding the nWo & putting nearly every big star in the company in it, expanding Nitro to 3 hours every week, the complete misfiring on Bret Hart. All those things add up to Raw catching & surpassing Nitro by the summer of '98. It was a slow death for WCW & the fingerpoke just sped up the time of death....

    The thing that bothers me to this day about the Goldberg/Hogan match they gave away for free on Nitro instead of doing on a PPV is that they could have done both.
    You do the Goldberg/Hogan match on Nitro still, but you do it as an exhibition match, keep it short, and when it looks like Goldberg is about to hit his finish, the rest of the NWO jump in to attack Goldberg like a heel stable is supposed to. That leads to the bell ringing, Goldberg getting DQ win, and when it looks like the NWO is starting to beat him down, he goes berserk and cleans house spearing everybody while Hogan is making a break for the ramp. And before Hogan can get away, whoever the face authority figure is at the time (I can't remember atm) comes out, stops Hogan, and announces Hogan will be facing Goldberg in the main event of the next WCW ppv for the title and not only will it be a no DQ match but the NWO will be barred from ringside. And the episode goes off the air with Hogan turning back to the ring, the camera cutting to Goldberg standing in the middle of the wreckage if the NWO leaning over the ropes to point at Hogan and yelling, "YOU'RE NEXT!"
    Then you basically do the Nitro match we ended up getting in real life at the ppv.
    And that's how you blow off the nwo angle after botching the job at starcade with sting (because you still have to make up for that).

In Bischoff last nitro in Sept 99, before he was sacked, he was still drawing 4.1 rating against wwf 4.4.
