@williamsmith666 not understanding that when you're eight, seeing a dude like that sold like a live action superhero can create some magic moments. It's identical to all the joyless smarks who don't like hogan. Kids have always been a big part of the audience and guys like goldberg, hogan, ultimate warrior, and Cena don't have to be particularly competent wrestlers to still make magic.
The lesnar comparison is also bizarre because he actually can really sell his style. Not everything has to be leglocks.

I'd say it's way more complicated than that. It was more like a foul bukkakke where SO many people had a shot. Hogan, Bischoff, Shitstain, Nash, various Turner suits, and god knows who else blew their load all over the poor hooker called WCW until Jamie Kellner popped in to inform them that she's dead. Which is a long, gross way of saying that a LOT of people have their DNA all over the death of WCW.

It seems most people blame the AOL-TW merger for WCW's downfall. Although I agree it may have been the nail on the coffin, WCW was already losing a lot of money before the merge. Eric Bischoff was a major reason for that by giving ridiculous contracts to the top Wrestlers. There were even guys/wrestlers getting paid 6-figures a year to just sit around and do nothing half the time. Money mismanagement was probably the biggest reason for WCW's downfall.

I agree with 99% of everything Jim Cornette says but I wouldn't say Bischoff "fell into a bit of luck for 2 years."' He had some really great ideas especially while competing with his number one enemy: WWE (F) at the time. Going live against a taped RAW, giving away results to their show, taking a NJPW idea and turning it into the nWo - one of the hottes angles in history, creating new stars like DDP when he didnt even want to, Scott Hall coming up with Crow Sting and Bischoff allowing it, Goldbergs winning streak, etc. The absolute truth is, when Bischoff left WCW, thats when WCW REALLY went down the shitter. He made mistakes, but imagine if Russo was made WCW President in 1996. We probably would've lost an extra 5 years of WCW.

It was well researched, and he spoke to executives and senior management at TBS who were involved with the company for interviews on a side of it that we had never really heard from.
Nitro also published full memos, and in depth details of changes that were made, how it impacted business, and the talent roster.
It was a far better book than The Death of WCW ever was, as RD Reynolds and Bryan Alvarez relied mostly on third hand accounts, and reports in the Wrestling Observer as their sources.

I'm starting to see why some believe Vince McMahon sent Russo to WCW to kill it off.

I think just putting it all on Russo is giving him too much credit.

As a rarity, I completely disagree with Jim on Guy Evans. Evan’s Nitro book is without doubt the most comprehensive, well-researched book on WCW’s demise and looks at the company from all angles. Unlike WWE’s angle of ‘WE BURIED THEM!, and the awful Death of WCW book by WrestleCrap’s ‘Well WCW was always garbage LOL’, Evan’s book looks at everything from WCW’s worth to Turner, company accounts, talent acquisitions, as well as the metrics like ratings.
If anything, Guy was actually underused in this show, due to just how much research and decent journalism he’d done on the subject matter, which is rare in the ‘shoot’ business of wrestling.

Dark Side of the Ring was more brutal on Russo.
Not as much as Cornette, but it's up there.

Interesting, Jim's air conditioner monologue perfectly describes how American corporations went into the gutter.

"Bro, this is a television show." Russo just didn't get it. Yes, it's a television show. The fights are fake and the belts aren't real, but at the same time, you don't disrespect the product by turning it into Jerry Springer. Fans take their favorite show seriously. Do that to Star Wars and watch how that goes. Putting the belt on David Arquette would be like making Jar Jar Binks a master Jedi. Yes, it'll get news coverage, but not for any good reason.

I can't take Vince Russo for more than 2 minutes at a time. If that. Bro.

You're missing Russo's point - which actually is a valid one.
Nobody remembers a wrestling MATCH. And no, we're not talking about Taker/Mankind, that was a FIGHT.
      Nobody remembers an Ivory match.
HOWEVER...everyone remembers Terri in PMS, Terri winning the Hardcore title, Lita pregnant angle, Trish and all the non-PG stuff she was doing, Kelly Kelly stripping on ECW (that was Vince McMahon, BTW), AJ Lee flirting with Daniel Bryan and CM Punk, Dawn Marie and Torrie Wilson, Sable's not-quite-bikini, Ashley's Playboy reveal, John Cena flirting with the Divas, etc.
Russo's point - good/bad/otherwise - is that he booked for TV, moments you would remember for decades after the fact. Paul Heyman was doing the same thing in ECW (Sandman getting hung, Kimona Wanalaya, women taking piledrivers, etc., nobody criticized him then for doing the exact same booking that Russo was doing.
Everyone remembers Russo with the bat, Arquette getting the belt, Jarrett laying down, Brawl 4 All, etc. Decades after they happened.
Corny's point is, just because you remember it doesn't mean it was good. And he's 100% right. Case-in-point: Judy Bagwell On-A-Pole match. Which Russo admits he was proud of because people remember it.
Russo only cared about doing TV that people remembered later. Because that's ratings (bro!)
