Finding joy in electronics repair | Mashiat Lamisa | TEDxTinHauWomen

- Опубликовано: 6 апр 2022
- "Your relationship with this phone will last two years before it's outdated and buggy." Imagine if every smartphone came with this label. Frustrated with the throwaway culture around devices, Mashiat asks us to question our current throwaway attitude towards electronics. Mashiat Lamisa, a socially conscious product and design engineer, wants to make tech accessible to all. She loves to harness her innovative thinking and design acumen to find solutions for the most pressing societal challenges. She co-founded Asia’s first electronic device repair community and also takes electronics that cannot be repaired or fixed and turns them into jewellery. Imagine wearing a chipset pendant and earrings from your old phone or laptop. This Changemaker and Climate Action Innovation awardee wants to create a big impact in the realm of electronic waste upcycling. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Right to repair is getting more and more momentum. Glad to see it.
Thank you Mashiat.
The whole world should watch your wonderful and inspiring video.
Just like you, I hold on to my goods (cars, washing machines, printers, computers, TV's ...) as long as I can. I only have and use one mobile phone, which I bought in 2007 !
I think manufacturers also build in obsolescence in many devices, and they should stop doing so.
Amazing talk. The confidence, the content, the delivery.
Point Made strong and clear.🔥
I believe Samsung just announced a partnership with ifixit which will allow consumers to more easily repair their own devices.
Yeah they did
Big tech corporations have definitely pushed too far in these last years with their nonsense and greed. Fortunately some alternatives are starting to emerge (fairphone, pinephone, framework laptops etc), now it's time for common people to start growing some good sense
Thank you very much for your talk about recycling our electronic equipment. It's been an argument with some friends of mine for some time. My phone is about 3 years old and has the same battery in it and it works fine. It is a pixel 2XL which is apparently a very popular phone because it does better than the newer ones particularly with interfacing with other machines and storing information. I truly hope that you have a company now that collects these devices and puts them up for resale. And once again thank you for your talk on this subject. You are shining example that young people who are alive today have the power to make for All mankind a global civilization.
With respect to the joy, there is always that great feeling of relief, satisfaction and accomplishment whenever I successfully repair any device or equipment.
"DIYing" is quite a hobby.
Everyone laughed, but to me, a tool as a gift will always be well appreciated.
Nice presentation, Mashiat Lamisa.
I DIY a lot. Don't know much about electronics but I've built an alarm and replaced a laptop oled.. fixed Vive controller. But I mostly do home Reno.. sometimes small fixes would be expensive and tedious call outs, especially in first world countries. I mostly don't understand when people are not handy.
*_"Maybe we can't fix how devices are designed by big corporations."_* 9:52 We all need to send a message to the cooperations by selecting which devices we do choose to buy and don't buy. If enough of us do it, the corporations will change their tune.
"...are *designed* by..."
Exactly.. while I don't care much for self repair at the moment... An example is LG's defective phones (G4) which cost many to lose bricked phones. Most people ignore this and continue to support LG mobile. While I love LG appliances I will never buy their phones again.
@@the_gratefulgamer whoops, left out "designed" -- fixed, thx
The corporations already do. They respond to the market.
The truth is that there are a lot of people who buy latest gadgets just to brag and for "the gram", even though they never use it's advanced features for any meaningful purpose.
And the corporations simply respond to the demand; as well as to fast advancing technology.
So, we can't really slow the corporations down (and in my opinion, we should not) but we can focus on stopping the dumping of used electronic gadgets in the wrong places. Probably, by finding a way to make the corporations take back used gadgets and recycle the components as they are churning out new ones. They could also take out the precious metals to be used in the development of renewable energy and thus help reduce the devastation in Africa.
Just food for thought.
This was meant for me. I ordered a new screen for my phone and then decided it was too much work to fix, so I ordered a new phone.
Now I'm determined to at least try to fix it, and hopefully it'll work and I can cancel my new phone order. :)
If you can afford it, you could repair this phone and donate it to someone who really really needs it and still get your new phone.
You could put a smile on someone's face and then earn some extra love and respect.
What do you think about this?
@@daviderhahon Great idea! I've been watching YT videos in preparation for the big fix. I'm really trying to consume less, and I love helping others out. Peace.

RIGHT TO REPAIR IS IMPORTANT!
SHOUTOUT LOUIS ROSSMAN
Came here to make this reference, was too late at it

Goddamn! Now that is a Tedtalk. That is one of the best I've heard in quite some time, really inspirational, almost got me teary-eyed. Having said that, she is also very attractive, beautiful and smart and I could not agree with her more.
You've definitely changed my relationship with electronics!
Very good video. What about when the mfr updates the software to lower performance for driving people to buy new devices?
Great presentation. Been holding on to my phone for nearly 5 years because can't figure out a reason to buy a new one... It works, got camera what more do you want... But corps want you to buy new biscuits..
Then buy biscuits, not a new phone... 😂😂
Really inspiring. Awesome speech
fantastic ... I understand what you are saying more as i watch louise rossmans vids too..
My god you are a lovely woman.
Incredible talk! Exceptional woman...
Smart girl, nice speech, inspiring. Thanks
I completely know what you mean, Mashiat. I'm the same.
What a great concept! Thank you for sharing.
This makes me so so happy, Mashiat aapu. ❤️
Wow .confidence
u are awesome! 🙌
Bravo 👏
Also, some old devices could be repaired and donated to schools to enable students do a lot more science practicals.
Insightful 💡
i preferred to repair my phone on my own for less than half a price asked by the technician and had not much difficulty following a youtube video tutorial. I agree with this video.
Very good effort,
inspire
yes!!
That was a good one. in USA companies do not help you fix things, they are only replacing because they are so lazy
How to become a part of an audience of Ted talks.
Next TED talks near to me at Coimbatore.
Awesome. That's my girl?
This is exactly what I feel is my legacy to leave to this world 🙂
Amazing
I'm still holding onto my iPhone 6s because it still works! I just can't find any reason to upgrade my phone if it still works as intended.
still on LG G5 3rd screen 8th battery
beautiful❤
Interesting stuff. Put major businesses out of business and learn how maintain our items
It would be great to have devices created in such a way, or regulated with requirement so that devices can be serviceable on levels such as described, both software and hardware, otherwise more waist will happen with failed attempts of people trying to open devices that can't be opened without special tools and equipment and not to mention the lack of knowledge of being able to even work on the device, I love how we have to express these things on such levels, like we've just now started realizing this is a problem, no offence I applaud you and are happy to see this, to bad we can't just skip the line and go straight to a better solution.
Where is Louis Rossmann?

use a wooden tooth pick or a plastic bit not a metal paperclip if ur going to clean out your charger port as it could potentially short circuit.
We use a metal tweezers when ppl come into store. So no metal at all?
@@iluvdant you should get the tips of them covered in a cloth or some sort of non conductive silicone material . because if metal touches the charging port terminals and shorts them out can do internal damage to the PCB + battery . you should know this if your working on live electrical devices.
@@brentmcd12 thank you!
I did it for seventeen years.
A ;product engineer and a repair shop tech in China dont know how to order a replacement screw? I thought that only existed in Quebec

Clueless and skill less Western "men" wouldn't even be brave enough to replace a kitchen disposal, what gives you hope that you can convince them to tackle a delicate screen replacement job?
I greatly enjoyed watching your passionate presentation! It resonates with me since I repair everything I am capable of.

Used my iPhone 4 for 6 years. It lasted another 4 years until I gave it away and the person lost it in 1 day. Don't think broken phones is much of an issue TBH.
