      Michael Edwards I believe you start in the middle, or really you start where you enter the room so your boards lay visually straight down the hall into the room. You start in a corner and the room is not square you could end up looking wonky down the hall. And I agree, great video!

    The 1/2 in. Strand Woven Bamboo Flooring I am installing by glueing, says to install across the direction of the floor joists (perpendicular). The dimensions of the room are 13 x 22 and I want to run the boards the short direction (same as joist direction) for several reasons. The joists are 2x12 pine and 16" on center. The sub floor is AdvanTech Flooring 23/32 CAT PS2-10 Tongue and Groove OSB Subfloor (glued with PL400). Directions want me to add an additional 1/2 OSB which I find unnecessary as this new construction seems very very solid. Also using the same glue as you. Finally, great video and expertise and explanation for starting in the middle. Thanks in advance, Kevin

    • @MrYoucandoityourself
      @MrYoucandoityourself  7 лет назад

      Good question. We never glue engendered floor over OSB, only over plywood or concrete. So, I would recommend you glue ( PL400 )and screw plywood(3/8" or 1/2" or more) across joists and then install floor. Don't forget leave a gap between plywood sheets. I have some videos about adding extra plywood. Thanks.

    Excellent video! We are planning to install engineered wood for our first floor on slab. The house already has glued-down engineered wood for the living room,is it necessary that I match the installation type? One installer said I can go with click-lock with a moisture barrier as this is easy to repair if needed...there is no need of glue-down installation needed. Another installer said that to get the same feel as the pre-existing floor, glue-down is needed. Confused about this, can you please clarify on this? Thanks!

      If your gaps are 1/16 or less you can fill them up with wood filler. Just find a color which fits to your floor color. But if your gaps are bigger - no way. You have to remove existing hardwood and install new one.
      When you install hardwood with glue you should make it tight with a rubber hummer and white tape. Keep tape for 12-24 hours and then remove. You can find lots of my videos how to work with a rubber hummer and use a white tape.

      Hi Joe, a very good question! Most of the glue surface tension is very strong. If you put hardwood flooring board to the glue already and want to lift it up, believe me, it not so easy. Another thinks, engineered hardwood floor special made for the glue-down installation and very flexible. Leveling should be within, but if you don't believe glue, put boxes on top after installation. If some spots, sometimes, make a sound I put more heavy stuff like a basket with glue or two baskets. Make sense?

    I am installing 3/4" thick 7" wide engineered hardwood onto OSB that has radiant heat underneath. This installation is supported by the flooring manufacturer (Superior Flooring, Canada). I am using Mapei Ultrabond 985 glue. Should I use a 1/4" x 1/4" square trowel? Or should I use the trowel clip that Mapei provides? I have been told to use Mapei's trowel clip to get the moisture barrier feature of the glue, but Mapei says the moisture barrier doesn't work when using over radiant heat. It seems the 1/4" x 1/4" would be easier to spread. Any suggestions?

    • @MrYoucandoityourself
      @MrYoucandoityourself  Год назад

      Hi Brad, I never used sguare trowel, because you will spend a lot of glue without any reason. Main thinks is grooves. If it’s high and standing so long and glue not coming down this is what you need. Mapei glue not the best in this class. Price too high but quality components not so good. If you using glue and this brand recommend you to use special clip- use it, because if you will have some problem with installation , manufacturer will pay expanses otherwise it will be your problem. Also I prefer triangle grooves. I have videos where I showed trowels what I used. Thanks!

For glue down not important to start from the wall, I am starting from the longest visible line ( hallway, living room with dining area, etc.) It comes from my experience. After installing the straight longest line you can do the installation from both sides. I have a few videos on how to check the line, how to spread the glue, how to glue the blocks to avoid moving this line, and how to tape together boards to avoid gaps. Some flooring materials are easy to install backward. Thanks!

    Looking for practical advice on a topic that is apparently not normally found. Or at least I can't find anything. What I will describe may be unusual, but is it possible to get good results, and what are the factors that must be attended to?
    An Atlanta area NWFA member/contractor is willing and ready to install 1500 SF of 3/4" x 4-3/4" T&G prefinished solid Acacia directly on my existing white oak floor, by gluing and stapling. The desire is to avoid removing the old Oak, which involves cutting out where some remodeled walls rest on the Oak.
    RUN DOWN OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES:
    - Main floor is joists over a dry basement, with original 3/4" plywood subfloor
    - Half the main floor is still covered with original 3/4" x 2-1/4" white oak, 18 years old. The original Oak appears flat, stable, and does not show gaps even in winter.
    - The other half was carpet, which was recently replaced with TruFlor 3/4" T&G OSB, thoroughly screwed down.
    - So the old oak and new OSB are flush where they meet in various places
    - The goal is to cover the entire main floor in 3/4" x 4-3/4" Acaia, over the Oak and OSB
    - The NWFA contractor claims to have experience successfully doing this :o
    PROPOSED STEPS:
    - rough sand through the old finish on the oak to promote glue adhesion
    - Install Acacia over white oak and TruFlor OSB using urethane glue AND staples into Oak (and OSB)
    - Maintain same orientation of the wider Acaia over the narrower Oak
    MY QUESTIONS:
    - Is there any way this can come out good, and what will it take?
    - Where can I get reliable information about doing this, and detailed explanations? :roll:
    - Will it be possible to drive staples into the old white oak? :twisted:
    - What can go wrong, and why? :x
    - Will the glue help assure a solid installation?
    Thank you for your thoughtful advice!
    James in Marietta, Georgia

      It is hard to give distance advises. But I'll give one of them for you:
      If you don't believe company which you invited to make this job (because you have doubts) I would invite several different floor installers (companies) and listened to their opinions (it is free!). Only after you got several opinions you'll make right decision.

      @@MrYoucandoityourself the reason I ask is because the manufacturer is stating that Quietwalk Plus is used for floating, glue down and nail down installation of laminate, engineered and solid wood. My understanding is that the standard Quietwalk is just for floating floors and a version for luxury vinyl flooring. Thank You 🙏🏻 I’ll keep doing research on this.

    I would never glue any hardwood flooring to a concrete floor due to the moisture issue of an on grade slab. I would consider it on a above grade concrete like a second floor or higher. Might do this with an engineered wood product on a grade slab, maybe.

    • @MrYoucandoityourself
      @MrYoucandoityourself  3 года назад +1

      Hi David, it depends on what moisture in your concrete slab. If it's up to 4 percent, you can put moisture sealer or glue with moisture protection, if it's higher - you can install only floating floor, better install vinyl, because water not affected vinyl. Thanks!

    Mr. you can do it yourself also put in laminate floors through 3 foot doorways with no T molding and doesn’t tell the customer that the manufacturer will not warranty the floor

    • @SlavicUA
      @SlavicUA 5 лет назад

      Most customers don't care. They'd rather have no transitions than to keep the warranty. Plus, it always depends on the company as well. Most say to place a transition in doorway areas greater than 5 feet, not three. But still, if you maintain your gaps, all should be well. Remember, laminate does not expand/contract as much as solid wood does. Flooring manufacturers actually make a bigger deal than necessary because they're looking out for their necks, not because of the problems. And to be honest, most problems are generated from the installer, not the material.
