For compression, the key is knowing how to use a compressor, not as much which compressor you use. Honestly, start with the stock compressor in logic, it has a bunch of diff styles and renders great results
The closest may be Meldaproduction Turbocomp. The pro is it can emulate about 20 of the most popular compressor types. The con is the interface is ugly and not the most intuitive. I agree that stock compressor plugins are the way to go in the beginning.
but you should compress always at the same volume as the raw vocal before, if u need to listen louder to the vocal just boost the volume of the channel cause if you change volume with compression plugins u cant reorder the plugins without destroying the chain cause u make volume changes, so gainstaging is very important
yes, it helps you get more consistent volume (also making it easier to raise the volume without peaking) by controlling the dynamics of whatever you put it on :)

It's not if you only apply a little from each. Think of it as drinking 4 small bottles of water instead of a gallon at once
I personally just use 2
1. Fast Attack medium release 4:1 ratio
2. Slow attack slow Release
2:1 ratio
