If the sole reason for choosing a new vocalist is to sound exactly like their former front man, then Neal should have gone ahead with Jeremey Hunsicker, Kevin Chalfant or Hugo Valenti who even looks like Perry. Their vocals are closer to Perry's singing style than Pineda's ever could. Notice when Pineda sings, he makes full use of his vibrato to give expression to a song with minimal use of melisma.

Talent is what made Neal watch over 50 videos of Arnel displaying his vocal versatility while covering a variety of rock tunes and eventually deciding to take a chance on a relatively unknown asian singer to be the first to front a legendary American rock band.
"Strutting your wares with a not-so-famous band (a "has been" if you allow me to be harsh) while performing their old hits that were more of a trademark to its original lead singer does not necessarily spell Pinoy pride in my part."
Journey has every right to perform their old hits. Since Pineda is the current frontman, it is expected that he sings those hits.

Arnel can sing live, brilliantly! Steve Perry murdered songs when he sang live, in a studio he was great. So it makes you wonder how "tweaked" he was when recording the version that came out on vinyl! Keep singing Arnel, keep Journey alive and improved!

I've seen Journey with both Steve and Arnel. I liked Arnel better. The guy is phenomenal. Great energy on stage. Great voice. Really surprised me at how good the band was live (summer of 2012).

Yes, that is right. There is only ONE Steve Perry. So I wish people would STOP comparing Steve and Arnel, because there are no two people EXACTLY alike. When you lose someone in a band, you replace them out of a choice of many, to get someone that sounds as close to the original singer or band member as possible. And i'm pretty sure the band would rather deal with Arnel everyday on the road than deal with Perry's offstage drama. Pineda, Schon, Valory, Cain, and Castronovo ARE JOURNEY! ROCK ON!

Arnel is a superb singer with a gifted voice box. No one can replace (Steve Perry) but, anyone can fill in a vacant position. Journey’s founding elite members saw a need for filling the void and revitalizing the interest of fans and fans-to-be. Journey should continue playing those oldies, but goodies! We wish Journey more success in the future! Journey will be known as the U.S. Ambassadors to the world of HOPE!

Was never a fan, til now. That is due to Arnel's presence and energy-hope to see them in concert.
Throughout Journey choices of front men after Perry they have tried to come close to Perrys voice. In interviews they would say things like, "wow this guys sounds like Young Steve but with curly hair." They make the same comments in obtaining Pineda. I am so happy for Pineda and where he has come from but Steve is THE VOICE!

He's not trying to be steve . He has his own voice and style . Hello! Steve voice= feminine/solid voice while arnel= husky/manly/solid voice . and i prefer a total performer who knows how to handle his self on stage rather than a singer just for a singer nothing more to offer if you get why i mean.

Although Arnel has covered JOURNEY in his earlier career with Zoo at Hard Rock Cafe,he is a good performer. Touring in the UK with line up Whitesnake well Journey had no chemistry.Whitesnake had chemistry. Arnel is very talented and hope he finds his own voice soon. Steve Perry brought continued success to the band and the original band line up had THEE best chemistry! You can't argue with that. But Steve PERRY IS THE VOICE! BRING HIM BACK!

BUT-- Journey is lucky to have found Arnel Pineda !!AP has that tenor unique masculine voice that has a natural rasp that makes it amazing !! He masters the song perfectly and is able to sing like in-studio recording while he is doing Concerts on LIVE---night after night !!!
AP"s vocal versatility, talent, and unbelievable energy are the fuel that keeps the Journey Concert rocking for many years !!
I lived through SP years --but he left Journey, band, so I move on, and so as SP !
Now, with AP around and delivering Journey amazingly well songs to maintain Journey's legacy-- why not? After all, SP left 30 years ago.. Some Bashers who are still hoping for SP's comeback---should understand that SP publicly claimed that he is NOT rejoining Journey ( even though AP publicly claimed that he would STEP BACK if SP rejoins Journey--BUT SP said NO in many of his 2018 Interviews.. SP plays SOLO now.
++! With NO one keeping its legacy and NO songs around on shows---- maybe the song will be forgotten, same with the band that goes along with it---and NO additional pay for SP ( because SP gets a cut each time there's Tour Concerts ! )
So, for a handful of bashers out there that want AP to fail----it's not worth it!! Schon and J Cain are NOT stupid to get a new frontman just to please a handful of bashers out there who some of them are racists! There are millions of people around the world that Journey had performed with AP loves and accepted AP and wish to see AP again on LIVE Concerts !! To get another steady frontman may take years--- at that time, maybe there's no more Journey at all !!
AP had performed all over the world for many years now ( since 2007 )and millions of people had accepted him because they love Journey songs and he sings incredibly well each time on LIVE Concert!

Arnel never claimed he is Steve. He came from a cover band, so it's natural to him that he can partially mimic the original singers of a song. Anyway, the band ask for it.

Neal uses so much sustainer, echo and reverb now. I like his dry heavy strat/Les Paul through Marshalls or Fender Reverbs so much more.

I wonder Perry wants his job back? It seems like journey must go on......and picked up the "new guy" along the way. Nobody can be replaced but for the sake of the show that must go on......these vocals are top notch and very good stage presence. If there wasn't a Steve Perry, people would be enjoying journey more

I agree with those that say no Steve Perry, no Journey. Although this guy kicks butt singing, this is just a Journey cover band. Just doesn't seem right. I wouldn't pay to see them.

I honestly can't think of one band that has replaced their original singer that has sounded better than the bands original vocalist. Even though arnel is no Steve Perry, he still does a pretty good job when he's on. Sometimes it seems that arnel just doesn't have the goods to sing the song the way it was meant to sung.

There will never be a Steve Perry, but Anel comes close.
There were issues with Hunsicker anyways and Journey and Hunsicker did continue.

personaly i'd reather pay to see the real journey on stage not a band calling them selves journey. i am a big fan of both steve perry and steve smith and i always will be. and i am sticking to my guns on what i feel is the real deal to me. to me the real journey includes both steve perry and steve smith in it, not hired help to just keep things moving along. the real journey made music that sent you soaring to new hights beyond this earth.

Arnel Pineda is awesome with this song, but a lot of the original high notes sung by Perry are not hit. The greatest of those was the high note Perry sang accompanying Schon's Guitar solo in the beginning of the song Perry held that note for a good minute to a minute in a half.. Arnel Pineda is very good and does a fantastic job with this song, but he doesn't have Perry's range. Arnel Pineda has given Journey a shot in the arm that's been lacking for 25 years..
I sing and I love this guy but the key is lower ....I know cause I can sing the doors off this version ....I can't sing the karaoke

I actually like it better, for the most part. I can understand the lyrics, without a cheat sheet.
The only part that's lacking is the backup vocals. But only because Gregg Rolie was such a huge voice in the band.
