Was born in 78 grew up hearing Journey throughout the 90s when I was a teenager-they were viciously mocked but I always thought S. Perry had one of the best voices I’ve ever heard-now I know that’s true-there’s no talent left in music
@gissellest333actual talent , not just a pretty face and 1/2 voice with auto tune ! 1970’s is a culture lost my friend , I’m just glad I was born in 1965 to watch all this happen in real time ! Cheers my friend !
There once was a time we all were young, we had the whole future ahead of us, it seemed like a million years ago. Watching these videos from 40 plus years ago evokes the strangest most beautiful melancholy, what a gift
These clips are sheer bliss; I'm sure there may have been some early adopter home theater set-ups, but for the rest of us, there is NO WAY we have heard these as good as they now sound! Infinity era Journey was an incredible band!!!
You can always tell the bands who were touring club playing live acts long before they got their record deals by the astonishing live performances they give.
Yes!! I always tell young people who are just discovering Journey that you only listen to them live they are even better live to me. I was lucky enough to see them 3 times. They were unbelievable.
Yes, indeed...they had been touring nonstop for like four years before Steve Perry joined. That's how they made their fortune because Herbie ran them into the ground touring because they didn't sell a ton of albums. Too bad they still toured so hard after they made it big, because Steve got burned out, and so did Gregg eventually. Neal, on the other hand is like the Energizer Bunny, that guy never tires out. He's still at it, the only one of those guys left.
Schon is so underrated. He gets shunned on best lists because he played with journey. Put him in a heavy metal band and he'd be listed near the top of all the lists.
@@MrAitraining Hi...I saw Journey pre steve perry..the keyboardist was the singer..but Schon was so GOOD..He stunned me ..thr whole band was Great..Thanks...Dave
I hope someday they make a bio pic about Journey, not only because of their legacy, but also to see their reaction when they first listened to Steve Perry's singing, especially Greg Rollie.
This band seemed to have more trouble with the shows where they were forced to lip-sync. They were more used to playing live than most of the pop stars.
The album that had this song, was one of the best albums ever. I bet I played that album over a thousand times. Now I have it on CD and listen to on channels like this one. Steve Perry's voice is so clear and his vocals with Greg are perfect
What an amazing singer Steve Perry was. And great afro by Neal Schon. Glad I caught them together when Journey headlined the Rose Bowl stadium in California July 1982 with Triumph, Blue Oyster Cult and Aldo Nova opening.
"The Voice"... one best rock bands to ever grace the stage!! Takes me back in time. Great Music and Good Times! Happy Thursday... thank you for sharing! 💖
Very, very cool that this was recorded live. Incredible. I saw them on this tour, and it was a great show. BTW, Neal plays a great lead here, and yet gets upstaged by "The Voice."
I saw this lineup at Day on the Green in September of 1978, the band's that played that day were in order, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, Journey, Blue Oyster Cult and Ted Nugent.
@Joe-vg8kx the lineup changed when Steve Smith became the drummer right after that Day on the Green September 2, 1978. Ansley was fired because he and Steve Perry did not get along.
Lucky you! I lived in the Sacramento area in '78 and never missed watching The Midnight Special. Would have loved to have been able to attend a taping ❤❤❤
SUMMER 1978 FEATURED PERFORMERS AT THE VERY FIRST CHICAGO FESTS AT THE OLD NAVY PIER. THE CROWD WAS SO TIGHT TRYING TO SEE THIS GROUP. THE RESTS OF THE FEST GOERS COULD NOT MOVE THE CONCERT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS. IT MADE SUCH A SPLASH THIS GROUP THAT JOURNEY WAS FRONT PAGE THE NEXT MORNING.
His voice is mesmerizing. IT'S LIKE LIQUID GOLD !
It's insane how Perry sounds even better live than on an album.
He had a bit of a hiccup on that first “tomorrow” but still 10/10
Ya, caught that too....
Sounded way off, but the performance was great otherwise....@@TheGodYouWishYouKnew
Simply one of the best singers of that era.
That’s because people used to actually have talent
He excelled live
Anyone else realize how beautiful and clean Gregg Rolie’s backup vocals come through in the mix?
The audio recordings from most all of these Midnight Special shows is incredible.
Great comment! Gregg's voice was the bedrock of their gorgeous vocal sound.
Was born in 78 grew up hearing Journey throughout the 90s when I was a teenager-they were viciously mocked but I always thought S. Perry had one of the best voices I’ve ever heard-now I know that’s true-there’s no talent left in music
Nobody mocked them in California. They were the Kings. Sold out all shows.
Saw them in 1979 in Oakland, Ca. They were incredible.
Yeah, they were considered too commercial to be cool, I guess. No one could argue with their sales or concert attendance, though.
Please give me a time machine back to the late 70's/80s. Life was so much simpler. The music was 100x better.
Everyone says this about their youth, irrespective of the decade. 😂
What if I knew a man who had one?

A-friggin-men.
His voice is like nothing I’ve ever heard and probably will ever hear again.
Steve Perry’s voice still blows me away even after all this time.
It’s insane how good it was!
His voice cracks at 56 seconds
There once was a time we all were young, we had the whole future ahead of us, it seemed like a million years ago. Watching these videos from 40 plus years ago evokes the strangest most beautiful melancholy, what a gift
Thanks. Glad you are enjoying the shows.
These shows keep me sane.
That was so well said! Thank you.
That’s exactly how I feel. Thank you for your accurate and beautiful interpretation.
There will never be anyone like Steve Perry. His voice is phenomenal
Aynsley Dunbar is a Beast on drums!
Perry one of the great rock voices ever
Fantastic 👏👏👏👏
The audience is completely mesmerized. They're like a bunch of statues watching the magic on stage.
Agreed , but a lot of ‘em are stoned.
Every midnight special recording is like this. I assume they require the people to not be out of control for the sake of the production.
😂😂😂@@luftwaffercommand09
Steve Perry had the cleanest smoothest most perfect voice in rock during the late 70's and early 80's.
that's how you do it right there.
His voice is so clean. His inflection outstanding.
He was called "The Voice" back then.
These clips are sheer bliss; I'm sure there may have been some early adopter home theater set-ups, but for the rest of us, there is NO WAY we have heard these as good as they now sound! Infinity era Journey was an incredible band!!!
Yup,loved the old Journey!
That’s a great point. I’m so thankful for technology that allows us to see and hear these clips the way they were supposed to be heard
Still my favorite Journey album!
Aynsley Dunbar. Master craftsman drummer. Huge influence on many a drummer.
Oh my gosh...Steve Perry had an absolutely GLORIOUS voice! So thankful to see this video.
Steve kicks it in at 2:24....still blows me away! Thanks for the memories xx
Oh my God yes!! That note right there is UNBELIEVABLE!! In my 55 yrs I have never ever heard anybody as good as The Voice Steve Perry!!
He even needed a small break at 2:39. Had to leave out “keeps on” because he was still catching his breath. Worth it, though!
You can always tell the bands who were touring club playing live acts long before they got their record deals by the astonishing live performances they give.
Yes!! I always tell young people who are just discovering Journey that you only listen to them live they are even better live to me. I was lucky enough to see them 3 times. They were unbelievable.
such an unbelievably tight machine of a band, you´re completely correct.

Listen to Perry singing behind Schons solo...So cool...Thanks Dave

Burt Sugarman! Thank you , soooooo much, for sharing these with us!! This means so much to this 60 year old!! Say hi to Mary, for us!
His voice at "don't know where I'll be tomorrow" give me some shivers, i love this song so much 😍
17 back then, journey was on the car stereo often, great songs. Thank you
This episode was the first time I ever saw Journey. Knew then these dudes were gonna be HUGE!
Early journey, so crystal clear and sultry ..i miss those treasured years, the seventies were magic.
I hope someday they make a bio pic about Journey, not only because of their legacy, but also to see their reaction when they first listened to Steve Perry's singing, especially Greg Rollie.
Maybe they'll do a bio pic about all the lawsuits they've made to each other over the years, too many and too ridiculous
I love you Steve Perry!!
And yes, these were the times of our lives!!
This man. Perfect. And Greg Rolie too. He deserved more recognition for vocals and keyboards! What a powerful performance!
Correct me if I’m wrong, you had to play live on Midnight Special. At least all of the ones I’ve seen. Pretty cool!
yeah this is definitely live
You didn't have to, but it was usual.
There are definitely lip sync performances here on this channel
to wit, supertramp
This band seemed to have more trouble with the shows where they were forced to lip-sync. They were more used to playing live than most of the pop stars.
Absolutely Fantastic

Infinity was their best album, I would certainly agree!
Ladies and Gentlemen, one of the greatest voices of mankind's all time
THE GREAT STEVE PERRY
What an amazing singer Steve Perry was. And great afro by Neal Schon. Glad I caught them together when Journey headlined the Rose Bowl stadium in California July 1982 with Triumph, Blue Oyster Cult and Aldo Nova opening.
What a day out that was! I remember everything about it from the mass sleep over at a friend's the night before...
Neal was decades ahead of his time with the concussion deterrence.
@@dahawk8574🤣I had to think about "the concussion deterrence" for a few seconds! Thought it might be the name of his first band!🤣
"The Voice"... one best rock bands to ever grace the stage!! Takes me back in time. Great Music and Good Times!

Midnight Special might be my fav channel right now for these wonderful high quality performances I remember as a kid
Steve Perry is a beautiful man with a beautiful voice aaaaand I'm in love
Steve’s voice is like no other!!
Dude. That fro on Neal 😂 I can’t believe he looked in the mirror after getting his hair done and said “Nailed it!”
It was the 70s .... if dudes had curly hair, most of them wore fros
Neal Schon was then and is now FINE!!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂
He looked great!
I think this was Steve's first tv live performance.. maybe he's a little bit nervous yet the voice is excellent
So grateful for these posts. I was only born in 76, so these videos are some of the greatest musical history lessons. 🤘
To me, the only "real" Journey is the one with Steve in it. This was such a great time to be a young person!
I have probably heard this song thousands of times and I never get tired of hearing it
Journey was a supremely talented band. In my opinion they are serially underrated.
In the late 70,s. I never n knew how good the guitarist is, he,s awesome
That voice.....Man.....One of the best in history of any music genre. He can blow.
can hear my dad singing this every time. a family favorite growing up.
Watching this makes you realize just how good these guys were.
Exceptional
there is a man who is in control of his voice...shit
Journey is a legendary group that graced the stage of the Midnight Special 🎉🎉. They are always showcasing awesome talent 🎉🎉
..that was the best time in history to be a young budding musician...I learned so much back then..still usin' it too....
This is live tv with audience performing
Steve perry…..What a voice!
Very, very cool that this was recorded live. Incredible. I saw them on this tour, and it was a great show. BTW, Neal plays a great lead here, and yet gets upstaged by "The Voice."
Even with the bad mix, they are phenomenal... This was the best incarnation of the band, with all due respect to Steve Smith and Jonathan Cain.
Ross Valory really shines here. Good stuff.
I love this song and this new channel! I hope Canadian band Edward Bear get uploaded 🙏🏻
All these year's later Steve still blows me away. Love that man's singing so much.
Oh, the memories! Up on Fon du Lac Lane watching the submarine races and Journey playing. Good times. Cheers
I saw this lineup at Day on the Green in September of 1978, the band's that played that day were in order, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, Journey, Blue Oyster Cult and Ted Nugent.
Journey tour 1978.was this the lineup all year? I saw them a couple times
S in mid to late 70
Saw all those bands in that Era
@Joe-vg8kx the lineup changed when Steve Smith became the drummer right after that Day on the Green September 2, 1978. Ansley was fired because he and Steve Perry did not get along.
The live performance is stunning!!
I saw this the night it aired!

Love Journey!

I’m getting goosebumps! So damn good!
I practice and I practice and I practice singing, and then Steve sings so effortlessly, pisses me off.

The Vocal output by Steve Perry at 2:22 is simply Mind Blowing!!
Steve Perry is gorgeous and has a beautiful voice and he had great hair
The greatest voice Steve Perry just fabulous
Reo speedwagon full concert please
Yeah!!!!
Need more video of Schon's hair! Absolutely epic
Neal had enough hair to house a family of 4.
They just don't make them like this anymore... Steve Perry, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc., amazing.
Not kidding I was there at NBC lot in Burbank. Saw Steve Perry down at least 5 Heinekens during the taping.
Classic. The guitar solo at 3:05 is lost, but still magical.

Whoa ! Mr Sugarman !
Perry is to Journey what Frankie Valli is to the Four Seasons. Iconic and irreplaceable.
....the morning sun is rising, it's kissing the day.
One of the great lyrics in music.
