Couple Charged $143K for Phone Bill After Switzerland Trip

- Renee and Linda Remund had a great time exploring Switzerland. However, they received the shock of their lives when their cellphone bill came. The jaw-dropping amount due was more than $143,000. The Florida couple are experienced travelers and before each trip, they say they notify their phone carrier. After he complained for months and even hired a lawyer, Rene says the phone company wiped the bill clean.
T mobile really tried to make him pay that ridiculous bill?! He even had to hire a lawyer?? This is insane
You would think the rep would have questioned that. 😄
I’d have just ignored the bill and their calls. It works well
Not for something like this it’s impossible to be that much
@@jaredgable390 exactly why I would ignore them, unless their going to pay me for my time in figuring out their mistake
T-Mobile had to pay the foreign carrier, hence it was not a ridiculous charge. Was the fault by the clerk or the couple. Don't debate it here, they would just be arguments of opinion.
At that price, that phone should be able to make inter dimensional calls and curing cancer.
AND MORE, that ain’t worth 143k bruh
😂😂😂😂😂
it already can make dimensional calls and cause cancer
Also a chauffeur prepared to bring you any vehicle, anywhere.
Would a cancer treatment really contain $143K of data?
Even if it was the poor guys fault, no way in hell should anything be 143k dollars?? That's just ridiculous.

@diamondly6250 t mobile tried to make him pay it though, they went to court over it and he had to hire a lawyer then t mobile dropped the bill
@@Unkown7ableit should never be that much. it’s ridiculous

They only wiped it off because they would lose more money by informing people of what happened to them. They figured bad publicity was not worth the 143K
They still got the bad publicity LOOL
Smart move on thier part.
@@rodropoop923I wouldn’t consider this bad since they wiped the bill. All carriers would have done what they did because it’s how they charge internationally. I don’t agree with it but them wiping it was a great call on their end.

Yip. When I travel overseas I just buy a prepaid Sim at the destination. My phone is international unlocked with an extra slot of a second sim. Usually I spend no more than $10-20 and use the data only when I'm in an area with no wifi, like if I go hiking.

@@shaggydawg5419 seriously! It will turn into a collection and be a small dent on anyone's credit and you may be able to convince the bureaus that they were false charges that resulted in the collection so they remove it anyways.
This is clear 100% rip off of people.
No. They were the ones who agreed to it by reading the rules and turning the roaming on. Do you think it's cheap for the company to operate in a different country?
@@user-zj4zz4un5zno matter how expensive it is, 140k is just absurd. 😂 at the very most, 10k is still an acceptable range for international roaming 24/7.
You have to understand prepaid doesnt even cost 200 dollars for international call for an hour. Times that 24: 4800 dollars and it’s the price for 24 hour calls.
@@user-zj4zz4un5z Yes, it is. At least compared to what most providers charge for the service. They charge based on the highest possible rate you could end up accumulating if you somehow used only the networks on your destination country which has the most expensive rate towards your provider to make sure they can't come out at a loss.
In practice however this is likely impossible to even occur, since said "most expensive option" will be an obscure network in bumfuck nowhere that will charge a lot for having to POSSIBLY deal with roaming in the future.
You know nothing about mobile phones, don't you? If the guy did not have internet included, he would have to pay $15/MB. That's roughly 10GB of data. So yeah... I am 99% sure it's his fault.
If dude had a phone plan for Europe it doesn’t necessarily mean Switzerland was part of it (it’s not in European Union). It happened to me and one single Mo was 2€ so it went pretty fast when I opened a single little video haha. It was less terrible and I had to spend 60€ but still
They did all the right things before the trip; i.e., went to T Mobile and told them about the trip and to check his plan. Yess!! Getting an unlocked phone was so much better for me. They might be more expensive initially, but its cheaper in the long run if you buy a locked phone with an expensive monthly bill
But if you have AT&T and still paying for the phone AT&T won't unlock your phone until it is paid off. I had to pay. $30 for someone on the internet to give me an unlock code i was able to unlock my AT&T phone to use with other carriers
Good advice and everyone should get an unlocked phone and a get a SIM card.
if you find it hard to get an unlocked phone (US citizens) just order the canadian version of the phone. In Canada it is illegal to make phones be carrier-locked.

Thank you for sharing this news. Our business will be changing providers from T Mobile. This is unacceptable.

All of them suck xd
This is just a failure for the customers to look up information - they specifically had to opt into the exorbitant price of out-of-bundle international data for this. Don't text a shortcode without knowing what you're doing and you won't have this problem.
We went to Switzerland, have Tmobile, notified customer service of our travels, asked about roaming add-ons and opted not to add anything cuz we were told clearly, what's included and not as we travel. No problems with our 2 weeks in Switzerland! This report didn't specify how they used their phone? Did they call home everyday, hour long conversations, text, pics messages, video call???
Either way it is stupid. Completely bogus fee meant to take advantage of old people on vacation who rightfully wouldn't have 1 thought about 'roaming fees'
There's no way whatever they did cost Tmobile 140k. Which means the profit margins theyre attempting to squeeze out of customers is insane regardless of two old people's negligent or unaware behaviour

@@aidenstanley7305 it matters what it costs the company because it shows the company chose "insane profit margins" which was the point of my post. the fact that a company can always find someone to agree to anything doesn't have any bearing on that.

My biggest fear right here. Right now I’m in the Bahamas on a family plan of 5 texting back and forth to the us. Not knowing what the cost could be worries me.
Just look it up on your provider's website, never use roaming without doing that. If the couple had bothered to do that bit of planning they'd have known out of contract roaming costs $15 per megabyte, and would never have turned that feature (which is protected behind a text shortcode) on.

I have T-mobile and traveled to Italy for 2 weeks last year and my phone went up from $80.00 to $120.00 I was face timing and texting. Your phone will literally send you a text to get the roaming plan. Make sure you get it when traveling.

Sending one pic (nowadays considered very low res) from Asia cost me about $150 20 years ago. "How bad it could be" is never a good idea. And I was a Nokia field test engineer back then and pretty savvy how much roaming costs should be (I assumed $10 or worst case $20 that it cost inside Europe back then).
In Europe you can buy a local SIM card for one month subscription with reasonable pricing nowadays.
When I went to Greece I had metro phone service and my bill was $50.00 bucks when I came back. I had no issues whatsoever with service. My friend had a $500 bill her provider was AT&T
You gotta pay the bill man. That’s the right thing to do
They must have stayed in Switzerland for quite some time and sending texts and messages back every few seconds. That the cost of a house
Nah…i need to see an itemized bill just to see if its possible to get that amount for a trip🤔
On contracts without data it costs $15 per megabyte there, that comes to about 10 gigabytes. pretty light usage for a holiday, and they were ridiculous for not looking at the information before agreeing to that.
Not only that. Also have a cap set on your account so if your usage goes above a certain amount your service is suspended until you call the carrier to sort it out. I remember having a plan that cost $35/month, and one time getting a bill for three times that amount due to data overage charges. The provider waived some charges and kept some charges but my bill was still twice the regular amount. After that i set an upper limit on my plan, that suspended it if i went $10 over my plan.
the service option for me and the advice I can give is that when you travel to different country make sure you swap the SIM cards and use the same card for that country only and not yours in bad way you cannot be charged for anything
Who is really surprise...T Mobile brought out Sprint and is doing the same thing they use to do to us.

143,000 for 10gb of data is insane, that's not even remotely justifiable.
