  • Robocalls are at an all-time high. On average, Americans received more than 2,000 robocalls every second in October, up 25% from the previous month. With 49 billion robocalls so far this year, all four major U.S. phone carriers now offer some form of blocking or screening service, such as T-Mobile's well known "Scam Likely" label. Congress and state officials passed new robocall regulations in recent months and have seen an uptick in successful cases against the scammers. Meanwhile, hundreds of tech start-ups are developing new ways to tackle the problem.

I've been waiting for several weeks for a health department volunteer to call me to set up my COVID vaccination appointments. Because the call could come from any number and because they don't leave voicemail messages, you have to keep your phone within reach all the time and answer every single call. It's been eye opening because I usually don't answer calls from unfamiliar numbers.

    • @dtvjho

The only help is that calls made from landline phones in the county offices will all have the local area code. Also, as phone companies typically set up only a few combinations in each town or city, the first 3 digits of the 7-digit local number will usually indictate the county seat. For example, local numbers in Lansdale PA begin with 361 and 362, and later on 855 was added. The volunteer should be using county phones for this work, not their personal cell phone, and you can always call the health office to confirm the policy.

As someone who has worked for most of my later portion of life in the digital world and knows nearly everything about why your number is being called over and over. What was NOT stated on this fairly good video about Spam and Spoof calls. No one in this spam/spoof protection video ever said..l.NEVER give out ANY information or confirm any questions if you actually choose to speak to a human caller. This is much worse than paying and losing your money one time. This video never truly spoke about the very simple things I’m offering for free to slow down and ...all on your own... end most of your Spam/Spoof calls. Here is my free solution I know works perfectly from personal experience on both sides of the phone and computer generated calls. It also has the added bonus of kinda being a bit of fun whenever you are in that frame of mind. Ignoring rarely works btw.
Here is my method for handling robocalls. Firstly, if you’ve never gotten one of these or you’re not very tech savvy like my parents. I will outline several free ways to deal with and put and end to these robocalls. So here goes.....
To fool most people, here’s what happens.....most often it’s a real person’s voice recorded to say something dramatic or say something to invite a response if you do not speak first. To deal with most of these calls in less than 30 second, try the following. Answer the call by saying something unexpected such as Yea, Yes, Yep or Can I help you? You should never ever say these very typical opening words....hello, hey, or what’s up? After all, the computer is programmed by people who expect a limited amount of greetings the programmers are expecting someone to say.
A robocall computer will get completely ‘confused’ when key greeting words are not used. Next, it will hang up and almost always puts your number in the ‘dead number’ list these computers also collect and store this video didn’t mention. One of two things will happen next. If it’s just a simple robot dialer, it will hang up in silence. However, it might be programmed to push the call to a human being. Most times, you’ll hear a click, or some obvious change to can hear so you’ll know what’s coming. If it goes to a human, say this once they begin speaking....’What country are you calling me from?’ or ‘What is YOUR full name?’ From there, I’ll leave it up to you people how you wish to proceed. I can tell you if you have anger problems, this is a great opportunity to vent some anger and frustration.
I’m hoping many might read this good bit of simple actions that costs you nothing and are proven very effective handling anything further. If the human on the phone has the guts to say something such as...I don’t have to tell you that! Usually it will be in a heavy foreign accent, etc. Here you can choose to use very inappropriate language once you’re convinced the call is some type of fraud or scam. You have no restrictions on what words you use or how you choose to deliver them.
Another way to help yourself if you have more than one phone number. Do the following when filling out any online form or physical paperwork. Use only your rarely used second phone. Set up that phone to permanently call forward your calls you want to ring your actual main number. All other unanswered calls will go direct to voicemail. I suggest a custom message like mine. ‘If you are calling this number, you obviously do not know who I am and have no business trying to contact me. When you go into your voicemail, you’ll hear what type of robot dialer called. I did use the very plain and nasty ‘F*** Off! for a while during a particularly difficult time shortly after I got a new phone and number.
This video also doesn’t mention that very often when you get a new number, that number will not have your name attached to it. Unless you call the phone provider and ask them to change it. Hundreds of calls all looking for someone who was not me, but likely the previous number owner. And of course, your phone itself should come with a simple call block feature with a large quantity of numbers you can add before it becomes full.
And lastly...IF you see a call and you think it might be important you did not answer. Call the number after typical business hours. Fake numbers will either just not ring, or get a message saying it’s disconnected or temporarily out of order. So there is my free solution anyone can use and it doesn’t involve adding anything without adding an App that might develop a glitch at some point and possibly make everything much worse in the future.

It's something that the phone could easily do. If you set a number to block, it shouldnt go to voicemail and it shouldnt ring. Sending robocalls to voicemail is not blocking and it does nothing to discourage them. I dont understand why phone makers won't just put real call blocking on their phones.
With the old phones if you could take it off the hook or unplug it. It's hard to believe we cant do that with cell phones. Even if you shutdown your phone the calls still go to voicemail. There's no escape.

Funny thing.... Unlocked Samsung S8 straight from Samsung, the service is free and preinstalled. The carrier phones (ATT, Verizon, Sprint, Tmobile version of the S8) remove the free option and replace it with a paid option. Then those same carriers allow users to spoof the number they are calling from so they can get around call blocking. They make a fortune from it.

Excellent report! Go git 'em! Please do this over and over! As a young guy I worked with investigative reporters, and had a "scanning the news" column. In recent times, I sometimes keep direct-talk scammers going on and on just to keep them putting an effort into their losing cause (with me). They make the mistake of type-casting me (I'm 72yrs) as the emotionally-accessible "lonely old man". I just stay on the line, taking up their time. On line I mostly use the Brady surname, but my last name isn't Brady. This puts up quite the block against anyone trying to acess my private business accounts, but I do take the risk of being profiled as a "scammer" of course. Getting feedback (sometimes) on that tells me that many people are aware of and defend themselves against scammers. But only some. To me this is my way of having fun, and deterring this type of nickel-and-dime white collar crime. But I don't recommend this to you viewers, due to the sophistication of hustling thieves. Most local police and other enforcement people are overwhelmed with the numerous complaints, but usually without having the resourses to effectively knock down the slick operators. This can eat up a lot of law-enforcement time. So consumers beware!
Go, RUclips! Congratulations on getting positive feedback on your non-sensorship status. ~( :-)---

I put my phone number on that list many, many years ago, and it worked great up until about a year or two ago. Now I get four to six calls every day. When I say " it worked great", I mean precisely that... I went from the time the service was first made available until recently without one single robocall or telemarketer or anyone else that I didn't personally give my number to. I don't remember exactly when DNC Registry was first made available though... probably around 2004, maybe '05 at the latest. I do remember other people trying to get on the list much later than that who still continued to get calls anyway, so maybe you had to be an early adopter and actually on the list almost right from the beginning otherwise you would just get lost in the quagmire of unwanted calls anyway. But I do know that it worked, and it worked for a long time. One other thing that may have contributed to the DNC Registry working for me is that I've had the same cell number since about 2000-ish, so I put my number on the list one time in the very beginning, and it stayed there unbothered until recently. It was nice while it lasted though.

Then you'll have to have dedicated servers for it along with integrating the technology into existing telecom software. None of this is free. Expecting them to operate like a non-profit is silly, companies don't throw money into things to give away for free unless they expect it will make them money in some other fashion (marketing/awareness campaigns or loss-leaders).
