But it’s some direction he will take thanks to the slightest guidance from mom and dad taking their parenting seriously.
IS this a "great story"? Seems like a lesson about not keeping wild animals as exotic pets. Octopus are very smart and notorious escape artists. I think that lets us know their opinion on being kept as pets.
I think they took really good care of the octopus seeing how it had eggs and the eggs hatched and they didn’t kill anything. I think they are good people and it worked out cause an expert helped to house the babies. It was a family bonding time and a memorable experience for his son. Don’t need to be so negative…
I had a tank as a kid and went through the trial and error of hatching and raising angelfish. If you dont get them out fast enough after hatching, mom eats them. Then, I had to have tanks and containers to raise them big enough to survive and also raise fresh brine shrimp to feed them. They hatched in upside-down plastic soda pop bottles in my moms kitchen. There were tubes, water, salt, fish food, slime, and the occasional dead fish. God bless parents who can allow thier children special hobbies and have the patience to wade through the trial and errors with them. I didn't become a fishologist, but I definitely learned skills for life having that hobby. Besides, the fish were absolutely fascinating to me. I loved them ❤
It looks like the boy and his dad both agreed that no one should own an octopus as a pet now. Terri is home, who knows if she can be released into the wild safely? At least this family is trying to do the right thing that is the most difficult to do when you make a naïve mistake. Now they know better and they’re trying to do better by those octopus babies. Good on them
Sad Fact: The female octopus lays her eggs and dedicates the remainder of her life to protecting them. She stops eating, slowly starves, and once her offspring are ready to hatch, she dies. This self-sacrifice ensures the eggs are safe from predators, giving the next generation a chance to survive.
In the wild yes, but they showed that this one was still alive after the fact, unless that was recorded footage. Free food from a trusted source would’ve bypassed that issue. Still humans only know so much about ocean creatures. For all we know it in the wild there could be females that went thru several litters before dying.
I mean, considering the damage some octopuses have wreaked on multi-million dollar aquaruim facilities staffed with specialists these guys honestly got off pretty lightly and they learned a valuable lesson in the process. Seems like a win to me.
Best way to get your kid to respect creatures, especially the ones they adore, is by letting them view them in the wild. Or research them online. Let them know that just because you love an animal doesn’t mean you should own one, they belong in the wild.
@@davidmennomoyer are you joking?! Truly? 😂 hamsters don’t exist in the wild in the USA. Most dogs are PETS, not wild. Meaning they don’t survive or thrive in the wild. Cats as well. I feel the same way about all WILD animals. They should be left in their habitats unless they need medical care or can’t survive in the wild. Otherwise taking an octopus out of the ocean, is wrong. And breeding them, is wrong. They don’t belong in tanks. They are incredibly smart! There is a big difference between pets and wild animals. Many pets wouldn’t survive without help from humans. I hope you do realize that. Not sure what kind of point you were trying to make with that question.
So yes, wild rabbits. Should be left alone, wild ferrets, should be left alone. Domesticated pets? Seems a bit cruel to leave them out on the streets, since domesticated means it’s not their natural habitat 🙂
@@maurakay1917 I agree. However, if you take them out of the wild to give them medical care, that is interrupting their life. They lived for a long time without human intervention....therefore, we shouldn't even intervene with our type of medical care. They are wild, they have to learn to survive.
@@maurakay1917 - ah, I see. Let me refresh your memory - in your initial post, you said - and I quote - that "just because you love an animal doesn't mean you should own one, they belong in the wild." I pointed out that not all animals belong in the wild. Not quite sure why this enrages you, given that you've just said precisely the same thing. If you'd meant "non-pets", then you should have said "non-pets". The problem with that is that, by definition, any animal kept as a pet becomes a pet - including an octopus. So what you're objecting to - I suppose - is the keeping of non-traditional pets. Or something. Look, I too agree that it's probably a pretty lousy idea to keep an octopus in a small enclosure, but if you're going to argue that all animals belong in the wild you're going to raise some eyebrows. BTW - so what if hamsters don't exist in the wild in the US? Is that honestly what you're using as a benchmark here - if it doesn't exist in the wild in the US, it's okay to keep as a pet? Using that logic, it would be okay to keep an Asian species of octopus as a pet. Is that what you believe? I certainly don't. Hamsters DO exist in the wild in Syria - so is it only bad to keep them as pets there, and okay elsewhere? You need to give this a little more thought, I'd say.
You can just tell that guy is a great dad. Form the "Thank you so much" to him beeing chill about the huge damage (at least in retrospect) to the baby names. Their whole relationship screams wholesome and happy and setting his kid up to do good in life. I respect it.
Knowing how intelligent they are, the father should have explained to the son that they should be free and not kept as pets in small tanks, as they don't like it any more than we would like being kept as a "pet" in a small room for the rest of our lives.
Lol. Let's be real here. How big is the tank that you live in? How well balanced is your existence? If we are honest, we all exist as if we are a pet living in a small tank. Sure we could venture out far into the wilds but we don't. We do the same thing day in and day out. Work then home to watch TV or play on the phone then to bed for more work the next day. If they give her a safe home/cave and toys to play with she is probably more than satisfied being the alpha predator in the world she has control over. She obviously felt safe/satisfied enough to last her eggs there. Octopus store sperm in order to produce offspring when they decide. I would propose that her decision to produce offspring is a good sign that she is living a good life.
@@bradprice8040 Yes, lets be real. How would you feel if you were confined to a 12 x12 room with some "toys" and you got a window to look out but could go no further? How long would it take for you to go stir crazy? Or do you think you wouldn't have a problem? Are you aware that many people can't even live on islands because they start feeling trapped with limited areas to roam? You're conflating monotony with actual freedom. It's one thing to go through the same routine daily, it's another thing to be forced to do it in a small room for the rest of your life. You're also conflating reproduction with "good" conditions. You make do with what you have and has no bearing on the true quality of life. Using your logic, you could say that coed slave and prison camps must be good if people chose to have children in such conditions. There was a case of an African boy being kept as an exhibit when the world allowed such things. He eventually committed suicide.
@@Mlogan11 we don't have the opportunity to decide when to give birth after reproducing. The process is automatic. Our only method of choosing is abstinence from sex. I have a home I own but spend 99% of my time in one room. While I am not forced into a box, I have settled into a box with toys. Everyone ends up in a small box with toys. It just happens faster for some than others. Calling the condition monotony doesn't change the reality of it. Everyone lives their life in tiny boxes. Some have more boxes than others. You have your home box. A work box. Lots of people don't move past those two boxes. Some maintain a friend's hangout box for a little while but those don't last. "Freedom" that you mention is a term that makes you feel better about your prison. The reality of the immense number of "permissions" you have to get to do anything you decide is soul crushing. If you are so free then take a 6 month excursion to anywhere out of your country but do it without using any overlord permissions. Then tell me again about your freedoms and the "box" that you don't live in.
Father of the year??? For taking an octopus out of its natural habitat for his son’s pleasure?? So selfish without consideration for the poor animal who has no business living its life in a small tank in someone’s house. Poor example to set for his child. Just because your child wants something doesn’t mean they should have it.
The eggs were probably fertilized because the mom was taken from the wild. Parents, I know no one likes to say "no" to your precious hatchlings anymore--but don't keep these majestic sea creatures as pets. They're so intelligent and don't deserve a life in captivity. I know Oklahoma is boring and by the looks of your house you've got money to spare. Take the kid on a trip to a preserve. Just... don't.
They could've used that money to let the kid study marine biology and become an octopus expert. Instead they just tortured an octopus through their incompetence 🤦♂
Or consider the large variety of fish bred for captivity that can have a great quality of life in a large tank. These are fish that have no place in the wild to begin with and there are plenty of breeders interested in giving them great chances. Octopusses and most blowfish are cruel along with any other fish you have to catch wild, it ruins their lifespans. I disagree with not keeping fish as pets because they are extremely intelligent and goldfish can form amazing bonds with owners.
I love how dad promotes his son's passion. However, this particular situation is immoral. Our household mantra is 'IF YOU LOVE IT, LET IT GROW' (our other mantra is 'love doesn't lie'). Just because you adore something does not mean you can trap it. Wild animals belong in the wild where they thrive. Their home is within NATURE not some humans tank. ❤

That poor Octopus belongs in the ocean. They are highly intelligent and curious creatures who should be exploring seabeds, not stressing out in a pint sized fish tank.

They thought it was a boy for a long time, but the truth was the truth and it’s genetically a girl. No one is upset, they originally were mistaken by calling it something different than its DNA, it’s an octopus, they learned it was a girl when she gave birth. Their belief was proven wrong. They don’t seem to care so let’s not turn this common section to something it isn’t.
You are correct that after a male and female octopus mate it isn’t very long before the octopus parents both die. This process is called “deterioration.” Sadly, that’s the next lesson to be learned.
Wrong. Octopi prefer captivity and make great pets as they recognize their caretakers and play games with them. Some even go so far as to show physical affection.
I love the look on the father‘s face and he opens his mouth as if he’s going to answer the question of would you do anything different and his little boy says nope I think he nailed it and then he just laughs and shrugs it off. It really is the things we do for our kids. What a good dad. 👏🏼🤗
@@epmoli do you know the difference between lite heart joke and factual statement of truth. Laughing is good 😊 Domesticated means the animal was originally a wild animal.... If a squirrel can make it .... It's easy to see all animals started in the wild including human beings
By every measure, Octopi are the coolest animals on this planet. Easily. Once you actually look into them, you'd be amazed at how intelligent they are.
They do. They're safer there than in ocean. They will live there longer and happier than in the freedom which is full of parasites, hunger and predators. Free animals are in constant stress.
No, an octopus doesn't belong in a tank in someone's house as a pet. It's a wild creature and irregardless of the hazards, it's just the circle of life. This dad is not teaching his kid to have respect for wild creatures, rather that it's okay to capture them and keep them as pets. If the kid's so enamored with them, take him to an aquarium, buy videos and books, support his interest but don't keep a creature in an unatural environment. It's cruel, plain and simple.
Let’s go through it, if you have dogs, we you cage them. If you have a cat you cage them, maybe inside a house, but it’s a house sized cage the same. You cage them because you care, if you didn’t, they would run out and get run over or get eaten or taken by animal control. Also, dogs especially benefit from having their cage as their safe space at times. Silly argument all together is what I’m saying. The guy shouldn’t have an octopus, but caging can be caring, and the cage can be house sized.
@@Miss.Leading my argument is you can cage something because you care. I cage myself, and pay an outrageous amount of money to do so. I’m not one of those cool people who want to live off the land and all, I prefer my cage.
Animals like this need to live freely in the wild. Not kept as pets. What happened to learning about them through videos, photos, and nature documentaries?
I’m not sure if this is true of all varieties of octopuses, but after giving birth, the female stops eating and dies within a few weeks to months. The male apparently dies much more quickly. Heard a documentary on this a week or two ago.
If you’re interested in octopuses, read Shelby Van Pelt’s “Remarkably Bright Creatures”, and watch “My Octopus Teacher”. Dad should have encouraged his son to study marine biology, and leave the poor octopus in the ocean.
The last few seconds... of that father's face. Reminded me of the look you see in so many dads having gone through watching their wifes contractions & and birth. He's such a blessing 🙌 for his children. What a great job 💪 Dad 😇 and Congratulations ❗️
And yet it stirred up another heart to love and care for them for all his life. Also... Any pet needs to be in a free and natural environment. You think a Guppi is fine in a tank? Or a spider!? Even dogs need to run and be in a pack wich they realy cant in a house or flat or on a leash...
I love this story. What a great dad and family. They got an unexpected treat and just went with it. Lol the dad trying to save all the babies is super cute. All for his boy. What a smart young man too.
Something about having young child tell you that you nailed, as if HE was your peer or even superior, makes the praise all that much better for some reason.
It's okay to say NO to your kids sometimes folks! There are practical things that we want, and then there are these things. An octopus for a pet in a residential home is not practical and this is why. Kids need to learn that some things are not practical to do no matter how much you want or like them. Get him a family membership to your local aquarium so that he can go study these creatures in a controlled environment that has the knowledge, and facilities to house them. He may grow up to be a marine scientist one day.
Especially since his dad made this opportunity and privilege- with all it entails- possible for him, which he wouldn't get anywhere equivalent to from going to an aquarium.
How do you know what this octopus wants. Maybe it's happy. I mean it's extremely safe. No predators to worry about. Didn't have to sacrifice it's life to protect its young.

To me an octopus is like an orca, it should not be in a tank. They are highly intelligent creatures and deserve to be free.
@TrueSeed-ft1jn yes. Its awareness of captivity is what should earn its freedom. It’s likely a goldfish doesn’t care about being in a small tank, but I’d say an intelligent parrot or octopus should have more space.
I agree. It's a living creature. Not a toy. Not an "alien." So cruel to have it sent in the mail. What if she had the babies while she was in that small bag??

This is true, but they stop going out to hunt - if food is provided (captivity) I believe they do eat and live.
@@OntarioGuy430uhhhh I mean if they stop eating then they don’t live…. There was one guy who lost his octopus and I think he had her for years
In the wild yes, but they showed that this one was still alive after the fact, unless that was recorded footage.
Free food from a trusted source would’ve bypassed that issue. Still humans only know so much about ocean creatures. For all we know it in the wild there could be females that went thru several litters before dying.
So the fact that the eggs/babies were removed saved her life?
Yeah, that's what my mind went to hearing she had eggs. There's going to be a sad conversation for the parents and kid.

Best way to get your kid to respect creatures, especially the ones they adore, is by letting them view them in the wild. Or research them online. Let them know that just because you love an animal doesn’t mean you should own one, they belong in the wild.
Do you feel the same way about dogs and cats? Hamsters? Guinea pigs? Rabbits? Ferrets?
What a lucky boy to have a dad like this. All children deserve it but many don’t have it. Awesome dad!!
My kids were never allowed pets in cages, now she's a biologist and he's a nurse! Careful what you asked for, how is caging something caring!
Let’s go through it, if you have dogs, we you cage them. If you have a cat you cage them, maybe inside a house, but it’s a house sized cage the same.
