    This is one of the biggest treasures one could find in diving. I'm jelly. For those that don't know. This octopus could turn this dive into a nightmare if you didn't respect it. Even small octopuses can wreak havoc on a diver by pulling at their gear. Sucking to their face. All sorts of crazy stuff. This was a dream encounter and both animals seemed to offer mutual respect.

    "Almost feels like every sucker has it's own brain". It's true, octopus' suckers are highly sensitive, they have nerves capable of some low level processing which communicates with a 'senior' nerve of sorts in the arm. Each of their arms is both capable of communicating with one another as well as acting pretty much independently from one another. They're truly amazing creatures

    • @scottrackley4457
      @scottrackley4457 Месяц назад +6

      Each of their arms has a separate nerve cluster for only dealing with that arm, and communicates to the other arms and the brain. They don't have individual "brains" for each arm, not as such as we would call it a brain, but they are somewhat independent in that those nerve clusters control just that arm. Fascinating creatures, if we go extinct, I think either dolphins or octopi will be the next sapient creature, if they're not already.

      I identify with this. I have Japanese ancestry, so eating octupi was part of my culture. But then I started keeping kosher (just a lot of Bible reading brought me to it). One of the really lovely side effects of this diet was I started to get to feel a lot better about intelligent creatures like this, with no more guilt. MANY of the creatures forbidden in the kosher rules--the original ones in the Torah, not the Talmud--are intelligent. Whales, pigs, octupi--we as humans kind of arbitrarily decide who we think will be intelligent (hence why octupi are tortured alive, but that's not generally considered okay for other animals). But maybe only God actually knows what animal will suffer most, or who's most intelligent. Anyway, whatever the actual reason for the no-octupi rule, I'm really grateful that I don't have to feel like I HAVE to eat them anymore to stand up for my culture. I can have my ancestry and still keep octupi alive.

    It's crazy wild to see two living beings from radically different worlds coming together and peacefully exploring each other's make-up and capabilities. This is really exciting to watch. It's like encountering a space alien and getting to know each other. There is a woman diver who has a seal friend, and they get together every time she dives. Maybe next time you can bring your octopus a treat in a jar and watch him open it. They are very intelligent and clever.

    If a person is drowning and an octopus is nearby, he or she will grab onto the person with a tentacle to prevent the person from drowning. Octopi are very gentle, sweet creatures and you can pet them like a puppy dog and they will enjoy it!

  • @Caca990SSR
    @Caca990SSR 2 года назад +2600

    “Its almost like every tentacle has it’s own brain”
    Well turns out its true. 1/3 of the neurons in the octopus are located in the brain. The rest are spread out throughout its body. Turns out, their tentacles can move involuntarily from the brain, showing they have their own action/thinking capabilities.

    I kind of like how the narrator/diver isn't sensationalizing this moment. There is a clear balance between "this was a meeting between two intelligent beings" and "he didn't care much for me once he sort of figured out what I was." You don't anthropomorphize the octopus, you don't mystify it, but you still allow it to be something very special and intimate.
