    The point in doing detail in the correct colour but which can’t be seen in that if it wasn’t there people would complain that ‘it’s got no detail!
    It’s a fabulous loco, that people have been wanting RTR for decades!
    Let’s just be thankful for it!

    • @GreenhillJunction
      @GreenhillJunction  3 года назад

      Hi Wamgoc. I'm very thankful for it. I bet the people who want all the detail are also the ones complaining about the price! 😂 I'm all for detail, but I think it should add to the enjoyment of the model. Even if this was on display, you wouldn't see the cab detail, so it seems a waste to me. I'd much rather see the flickering firebox detail, which came in the Princess Elizabeth, become standard over the painted levers. Much the same as modern image modellers now expect to get directional lighting on their locos. Cheer, John.

      Hi Peter. That's what I'm thinking too. Lucky that I decided to do the village before the upper station otherwise the Hush Hush might've not went anywhere! Too much work done on the lower level to start adjusting it for one loco. Cheers, John.

    Good looking model. Very unique style. Shame about the step design. I would be sorely tepmpted to snip them off, trim them down a couple mm and glue them back into place. I have seen two reviews so far (yours and Graham's) and it's the same problem. Anyhow, it is always great to see what you are up to, so thanks for the update!

    • @GreenhillJunction
      @GreenhillJunction  3 года назад

      Hi Anthony. I have thought about snipping them off, but worried it will ruin the model, but then again didn't know about the steps until Graham pointed it out! Lol. I'll have a layout update soon, just the village is taking so long to put together and I keep changing my mind about what I want in it. Cheers, John.

    I don't have this one this one as I am mainly GWR. You appear to be not alone in the steps catching. This loco is growing on me. Other reviewers have altered their platforms but you shouldn't have to do this. Perhaps those steps should have been in the detail pack leaving fitting optional. I have had to leave front steps off other models as they can interfere with running. Enjoyed the running session. I have subscribed. Regards Paul.🚂🚃🚃🚃

    • @GreenhillJunction
      @GreenhillJunction  3 года назад +1

      Hi Paul. Thanks for subscribing and commenting. I'm still undecided whether to cut the steps off or not, would be a good idea to have them as part of the detail pack. I rarely fit any of the packs as they tend to affect running, especially the steam pipes on the new Merchant Navy models. I've not got tight curves but had to remove them cause the front bogie wheels kept catching on them and derailing. Still really like the model though. Cheers, John.

      Hi. Yes I've been reading that and I'll admit the packaging wasn't great. I also feel however there is a great anti-Hornby sentiment around, especially on social media, and all we are seeing just now is people who want to moan. It is a lovely model and runs like a dream. Given that I've bought 5 of Hornby's recent releases and all have arrived intact and ran flawlessly, I'm inclined to say the majority do, and it's only the moaners we hear from. Cheers, John.

    Great model. Could you trim the bottom of the ladders say with sandpaper?

    • @GreenhillJunction
      @GreenhillJunction  3 года назад

      Hi Phil. I think that best solution is to just cut them off. It might come to that if I get annoyed with just running it on the upper level, but I'll spend some time pondering what to do with it rather than doing anything rash. Cheers, John.

    Its funny, good model with good detail panned because of a packaging contractor and our platforms being the wrong height... not the design being bad, our workmanship on our layouts. 😅 so keen to hate on hornby, so desparate to avoid responsibility on our part.
    Good model really. Beats the pants off the south east finecast kit for both value and detail and easy of use and thats all we really have to compare it to because those are the only two ways you can spend cash and get model without having to custom commission it.
    The bulge you mentioned and hoped someone would explain, this represents the first bank of water tubes, this drape down over the sides of the grate much as the water jacket would around the grate of a regular firebox. The second bank of water tubes is smaller and is analogous to the boiler barrel section. It is in reality 5 large pressure vessels linked by banks of smaller tubes.
    Pretty useless boiler design for UK steam as it doesn't really present any benefits of efficiency from consistent operation as water tube boilers do in a ship. Interesting but largely a stupid loco on the part of the LNER

    • @GreenhillJunction
      @GreenhillJunction  2 года назад

      Hi J Jay. Thanks for that detailed reply and letting me know what the bulge on the boiler was. I still love this model and am currently designing the upper station to accommodate it. If I really wanted to I could probably adjust the lower station too, I just can't be bothered right now.
      I don't know why all the Hornby Hatred is so prevalent just now. I've had zero issues with all my recent purchases from them, and how do we even know Hornby agreed to that packaging. In my experience Hermes aren't the greatest and they could've just decided to take shortcuts. Either way the hysteria over this greatly overshadowed a beautiful model. Typical internet, the moaners get a platform whilst the majority of happy people just get on with it. Cheers, John.

      @@GreenhillJunction tbh given the time frame, slap bang in the middle of the greatest increase in online ordering and parcels movement in history thanks to lockdown changing our shopping habits for good it really isn't one little bit shocking that it happened. Think you're probably a weird statistical blip if you didn't get at least one mangled package during that dark time or since it ended. Just so happens it was this model for some, for others like me it was wood for a guitar that showed up cracked into several pieces... but is what it is, you'd think the last year or two would have given people some perspective on life but obviously not in a lot of cases🤣

    Why anyone should want such a loco model beats me. However here's some info on the real thing: This unique experimental loco (which was never named) was intended to discover if there was any benefit in using a high pressure type Marine Boilers. In reality the boiler used was a Yarrow water tube boiler with a pressure of 450psi, when the normal class A1 Pacifics at that time used only 180psi. The triangular shape of the actual boiler gave the external cladding a similar triangular shape, which many thought was some type of streamlining, which of course it wasn't. The locomotive was a four cylinder Compound design with two inside high pressure cylinders and two outside low pressure cylinders.
    Built in 1929, the loco being experimental was rarely in regular passenger service. The high pressure and the fact the boiler was a design intended for shipping, quickly revealed that the rough rocking and rolling of steam locos generally, had an adverse affect on the boiler, causing repeated leaks. A number of repeated visits to Doncaster Works resulted in numerous tweaks and modifications. But the bottom line was that Marine design boilers of high pressure didn't take kindly to being bounced around at speed on railway tracks. As the higher than normal pressure, which it was hoped would provide a significant increase in power, was hamstrung by an insufficiently large grate, and somewhat restricted valve size, interest in the locos development quickly waned. Indeed it seems by 1934 the loco was back inside Doncaster works, never to be seen again in this guise.
    In 1936 after a major rebuild into a standard 3-cylinder design with a normal boiler, but still with its unusual 4-6-4 wheel arrangement, and now classified W1 Class. It finally went into regular service on the East Coast mainline in similar links to the Gresley A4 4-6-2's Streamlined locos which it now looked virtually identical too. However in its rebuilt form is was not a racehorse, but more of a carthorse. In other words good pulling power for overweight 16 coach+ expresses, but getting it to exceed 90mph was a bit too much.
    In rebuilt form, the loco survived World War 2, and became BR No 60700. The rebuilt loco was finally withdrawn for scrap by BR on 1st June 1959, still unnamed.
    Indeed the real loco in any guise never really gained much interest or fame once the initial shock of its experimental appearance had worn off. I'm rather surprised therefore that Hornby took any interest in this rather obscure experimental loco. As there are still dozens of much better known and more impressive regular types, that have never yet been produced in model form. Such as the Urie/Maunsell H15 4-6-0's, and the Maunsell N15X Rememberance class 4-6-0's. The huge gapping hole in lack of Scottish designs. And then of course if Hornby want something really controversial for a model there is the beast created by Bulleid known as the "Leader" class 0-4-4-0T, which BR finally sidelined when Bulleid left BR in 1951.😝

      Hi James. Thanks for the detailed history, a very interesting read. I like this model because it's different from the rest, and is unique. As soon as I saw the photos of it at the Hornby release I ordered it. That's basically how I pick what locos I have on my layout, what I think looks good or interesting, be it through design or livery. Cheers, John.

    Saw this fault of the steps catching on the platform from another review. The problem was sorted by taking the body off and placing a small thin piece of plasticard cut with a hole using hole punch and mounting over the front securing screw.

      Hi George. Thanks for watching and commenting. Interesting. I think it's a width issue with mine as it's the ladder part of the steps that is rubbing, but I will double check. Do you have a link for that video? Cheers, John.

      Hi Kev. It is a great runner, I forgot to mention that on the video, but straight out the box it ran perfectly. I think the only option I have to run it on the lower level is to snip the steps off all together, but I'm not prepared to do that yet. Cheers, John.

    Submarine on wheels good description ! Apparently the air vents do open they are just stiff I saw Class47Peter, another RUclipsr attack them with a cocktail stick . That was a good price you got direct from Hornby . That platform issue would annoy me . I suppose Hornby will say they’ve made it to scale . Is there anyway you can shave a wee bit off your platforms , it looks like it’s fouling it only by a sliver

    • @GreenhillJunction
      @GreenhillJunction  3 года назад +1

      Hi Russell. Didn't know Peter hd done a video, I'll need to check it out. I don't think I could, and then be happy with it. I'm quite OCD with straight lines and I think to bodge a bit off would just result in a wavy platform edge. It's Metcalfe paving slabs too so I'd probably end up with them getting damaged. Just need to keep myself happy with it on the upper level just now and maybe consider snipping off the steps if it really annoys me not being able to get it down to the lower level. Cheers, John.
