  • If you’re a camper or hiker, or just like sneaking outside for a beer at night to play with your knives, then check out the awesome Olight H1R. The Olight H1R is a new USB rechargeable headlamp powered by a RCR123A lithium ion battery or a CR123 lithium battery. It’s rugged, made out of aluminum, and waterproof to IPX-8 standards. It’s a great hiking or camping headlamp, with a durable USB charging option. It’s capable of over 600 lumens and goes down as low as 2 lumens. Whatever you can throw at it the Olight H1R Nova can handle it. This review has runtime tests, output tests, waterproof and drop tests, and more. I compare it to the Armytek Tiara A1 Pro, the Olight H05, the Spark SG6, the Olight S1r, and the Fenix HL50 in the big beamshot section. I cover optics, throw, candela, tint and more. If you like it, buy it at Going Gear and use the coupon code “AKB” for a discount.

    Best produced review by far. I'm fed up with reviews of boxes, how to open a box, what's in a box, what's in directions, what the direction sheet looks like, and so on. Also a person droning on & on about getting an item, describing an item, how neat a item is, all without showing the item under review doing what it's supposed to do. There's tons of reviews about this item, but your's is the review that show the item in the most practical, realistic way. GREAT JOB!

      +Bobby D. Thanks man... I've put a lot of time and thought into what I think people want to see. And hopefully I answer most reasonable questions people may have about the light.

    This review is 2 and 1/2 years old at the time that I am watching it but it's still as prescient as ever I guess hey hey. As a result of this video I've finally... finally for God's sakes finally been able to decide which Olight I'm buying and it's this one. Thank you so much for giving me my life back.

    so I have watched this review a few times now in the last 4 months.... and today I ordered this light. Last night I fell asleep on the couch during the runtime sequence, later I woke up and without clearing my mind and ordered one. Nice work. It will be delivered today.
    I think having this along with an extra battery, somehow I had the clarity of mind to order an extra battery, will serve me very well on two upcoming backpacking trips in Glacier and Olympic NP at the end of the month. Along with an Anker battery bank my kit is getting smaller lighter and less redundant. I will give my wife the Armytek Tiara C1 Pro to use and let her get pissed at the UI. It's still a great light As for the H1R, I will be interested in seeing in person the differences between the tints of the two in NW.
    When I was comparing the two companies, I was still considering the Wizard USB and the new Olight H2R. The Armytek cable looked more sturdy but again the UI and now the headband bracket for the Armytek light turned me away. Their new bracket is plastic and your light just snaps in, I could see no safety either so it could either break or fall out. And, it came down to also that I wanted something small for a headlamp and Armytek still hasnt release the Tiara USB.
    Last thing is my Tiara tailcap is getting a little buggered up from sticking it to ferrous surfaces (not always so smooth or clean, or bits of metal stick to it and then scratch gouge slightly), so it will be interesting to see how well the H1R holds up also and if it effects charging performance.

    I like the subtext of this video. He didn't say it, but it's pretty clear to the observant viewer that this light is well-suited to David and Goliath-style combat. It's nice to know that I can chuck this at a bear in defense of myself and loved ones without fear of breaking it. Thumbs up!

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro

    As always, love your reviews and appreciate the cinematic efforts. So much more entertaining that watching a tabletop review ramble. As for the plastic Petzl backpacking headlamps, it's usually an effort to shave an ounce. You know, gram-weenie ultralighters...

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 лет назад

      Yeah I guess... looks like it saves some grams over the plastic Olight H05. Oh well... this is still pretty light for an aluminum headlamp.

      Armytek tends to have a more complicated UI. This light is simple, and easy to use... plus that USB charging is very nice and durable.

    It was just with this video that I realised why I AA powered lights prefere.
    During my 100km hike i needed light for 6-8 hours of darkness.
    An USB-charged device can just not delivere that.
    So I carry some extra AA and dont have to worry. For dayly use, just take rechargable Ni-MH Akkus.
    So thank you for your video!

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 лет назад +1

      You can always bring a portable power bank... charge it that way. Then you dont have to use alkaline batteries at all.

    • @BigBellyEd
      @BigBellyEd 7 лет назад +1

      It really depends on your system. Either all USB-powerbank or AA.
      And having a powerbank to support your GPS, Light and phone (my essential items) must be very big, or with limited electricity you consume the energy of one device when you charge the other.
      On AA you can interchange just the batterys.... it really depends on you personal preferences.
      By the way I found an 4x AA battery powered powerbank.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 лет назад +1

      I have tested and used a 4AA power bank before, and those have enough energy usually to charge a cell phone once. I still prefer a usb power bank... or you could always carry a few extra batteries for this. Some people prefer alkalines... I get it. I just don't.

      +Blue Mountain Bushcraft and Outdoors for sure. I've thought about buying a zebralight headlamp a few times, but I actually prefer the olights UI slightly better. If zebralight would change up their UI slightly I might like it better. That ain't gonna change though!

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 лет назад +1

      +Blue Mountain Bushcraft and Outdoors yeah those older alkaline zebralights can't match the high modes on the lithium ion lights. That said... 95% of the time 100 is the brightest I'll ever need... but even then too much a lot of the time.

      First 6-er I've drank of it. Reminds me of port city porter- although I'd need to do a side by side to be sure. I first started drinking their unfiltered wheat in college (2000?), and have been a fan since my brief year in art college in KC. Didn't they do twists offs for the longest, until changing a few years ago. I think New Belgium and Boulevard are my two favorite breweries.

      Advanced Knife Bro KC Art Institute? Very cool. Yeah I started off on unf wheat too, although they only had that and pale ale when I started drinking. My favorite is 80 Acre, their "hoppy wheat." It's amazing to see how they've grown. They were even out in Philly when I was there last Spring.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 лет назад

      +Chris Mays that's the one! I have had the 80 acre several times- it's about the only one they carry out here in the 6 packs. They seem to stock their smokestack series bottles more. Yeah.. I've been able to get them in virginia and South Carolina (I'm pretty sure) and of course St. Louis.

    I'm eternally awed and adoring at how cute these CR123 minilights look. Except at the same time, to me they're kind of a disappointment in the role of primary torches, their runtimes are just so short even on lower levels (or especially on the lower levels). Still, I wouldn't say no to this headlamp were I offered one at a big clearance discount.
    Anyway, despite its first use it's also an angle-head in practical terms. Bro, can you please check out how it feels and works when clipped to a pocket or collar of a shirt (as in, can you feel the weight and how does the beam look from a non-maneuverable position so unlike your hand or head)?

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 лет назад +1

      +Dinner-fork tongue I don't like it as a clip light- but that's not necessarily a fault of this particular light- but more a generalization of headlamps used as a clip light. It bounces around on the shirt quite a bit if you're moving at all. On a sturdy belt it's fine- that seems to be the only place acceptable for me. It's light... so maybe on the forward strap of a backpack. It's not too weighty necessarily... it's just heavy enough to cause shirts and fabrics to bend under its weight.

  • @justintajchman723
    @justintajchman723 6 лет назад +1

    Obligatory 'big fan of your reviews'. Really though.
    For someone like me, that wants to use this primarily for backyard hangouts around the fire pit and for campouts, what do you recommend - the Olight H1R or H2R? I generally am using it to get around the campsite and to take the occasional nighttime exploration hike with my sons. My understanding is that the primary tradeoff is that the H1R is quite a bit lighter and doesn't get as bright. I don't think I'd ever need a 2300 turbo - more interested in which light has the most usable and pragmatic modes, and if one of the lights is generally handier around the campsite. Thanks!

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 лет назад

      H2R not all brightness but longer runtimes too... mainly because of the bigger battery. You might not need extreme brightness around the camp site, but on hikes, and overnight camping the bigger battery wins... especially in the winter or fall when you don't have as much daylight.

    Hi,
    Great review, do you have to remove the clip to mount it on the head lamp?
    Kind regards

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 лет назад

      +Reynaldo Gomez it is possible, but I wouldn't do it. It puts additional stress and hard edges on the silicone holder that keeps the lamp in place. It will probably break after some time. I haven't used many headlamps where it is possible to keep the clip on, while using it as a headlamp.

    So I can't plug my android phone's micro usb charger directly into the torch to charge it? Have to carry the magnetic attachment always

      It's no different from carrying the brick + cord combo for your phone, if you think about it. Just toss it in your car bag or backpack where it won't be a bother.

      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 лет назад

      +no22sill basically yes... you need to bring that cable along. It's a much nicer and easier to use version though

    i know it's been a couple of months since this review is posted, but I'd like to ask if you know the diameter of this flashlight? I'm trying to see if it fits any red/blue filter.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 лет назад

      The blue ring around the lens is19mm... the honey comb lens is 15.09mm. I'm not familiar with olight filters but there isn't any threading.

      It's dodgy to post links on the Chube. What I can guarantee is that illumn has them, and it's a good store that the guys at BudgetLightForum love.

    Well, this sucks! "Coupon code "AKB" is not valid" 😩

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 лет назад

      Yeah... I think that it doesn't work when Olight stuff is on sale. It worked last week when it was $66. I think the coupon code they created for me was only 10% so I think this deal is better.

  • @alholsbo5934

    Your code is not valid at Going Gear dude

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  7 лет назад

      +Al Holsbo so when the Olight stuff or other stuff goes on sale- I think my coupon code doesn't work. If it's not on sale it usually works. I don't control that- but last time someone brought this to me, that was the problem.

  • @elvay6847

    Backpackers/hikers buy those shitty lights because most don't know any better and it's what REI sells. Black Diamond in particular makes some really nice products like their Alpine Carbon Cork Trekking Poles. Those poles are amongst the best in the industry. But unfortunately their headlamps leave a lot to be desired. >.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 лет назад +1

      Yeah... and it's $60 so it has to be good right? Not saying Black Diamond doesn't make good stuff... just that those headlamps they sell aren't.
