Never knew how much I appreciated your reviews until I found myself refreshing this channel since the new MacBooks came out!! Awesome. Got the 16” max, can’t wait.
Btw fun fact: while they look thicker another reviewer actually measured and turns out the 14” is thinner than the old 13” MBP at the thickest point- the clever tapered edge design just made the old ones look even thinner.
@@samarthmadhivanan5726 I think he's referencing the taper of the old MBP's, they have a "bevel" that looks like the edge, but then get thicker if you look beyond the edges, whereas these new ones don't have the bevel around the edge and just carry the thickness all the way to the edge so they look thicker.

I'm absolutely saddened by the fact that engineering software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, GIS programs and new drone mapping programs can't be run on MacBooks without the use of BootCamp and running Windows. The potential for increased performance and productivity by running those with MacOS is incredibly high. There's nothing I want to see more than that as a person in the engineering field.
@@sebzapata There’s a mac version. When I was a student awhile back there were missing features and usage was different. Not sure if its changed since then. Either way, when 95% of all other engineering software needs Windows, its not enough for companies to even consider a Mac for professional use
@@austinmaurer342 In german we call machines like that: "Goldener Käfig" These macbooks are truly masterpieces of electronics. However, they are far too expensive for conventional activities and often unusable for special areas of application. Many programmers tinker with Linux here and there. Something like that is out of the question for company laptops. As for the other cases, what else is there great besides audio and video editing? Most of the business software that is needed for business matters is Windows dominant. The macBook is of little use here. This is why these parts are only the "non-plus-ultra" for a limited group of users.

The fact that a laptop with a chip you can get in a $3,500 configuration can beat the load times of a $50,000 machine when rendering video is insane. That is such a quick jump with Apple Silicon. Makes me excited for the future with M2, M3, etc. The power per watt is insane.
You know I realized that this topic is really a "glass half full/half empty" type of situation. I'm having trouble calling it a notch because I don't see it as a notch into my display, I see it as two extra slivers of display stretched out into what used to be a bezel. To me, the "notch" is just extra display I didn't get, rather than something that's been taken away from the display.
Great review, concise, articulate and fun to watch. I have been using the 16 inch MacBook Pro for a couple of weeks. I've been able to consolidate all of my audio and video production work on this machine, and without any of the performance issues I've had on previous laptops and desktops. Pretty amazing.
I’m a dev. The primary project I work on at the moment took 6 minutes to build on my 2016 15” MBP. Now with the 16” M1 Pro MBP with 32GB of RAM it takes < 2 minutes. Bonkers. That right there makes it worth the price tag. Not to mention the other design updates. I’ve also been really enjoying the thermal efficiency- it’s the first time in a long time where I’ve been comfortable sitting on a couch working for a long time with the machine on my lap because it just doesn’t get hot!

It's a beautiful machine, but not a good mobile workstation. The portability, battery life and performance of the M1 Pro and Max chips seems like an incredible upgrade.
i’ve finally been able to consolidate all of my work to one portable device, that maintains battery all day. I have to run CAD, Signal analysis tools, EM field solvers(all X86-64) in Windows(via Parallels). And I can do this on battery, all day long. I have to be at a lot of places during the day and being able to just close the laptop lid in the middle of something, going to some other location, and then being able to jump right back in anytime, with the computer sitting in my lap(if I have to) without my legs melting off… it has added such convenience that I’m able to work much more efficiently. I likely will not touch the edges of the power of this laptop, but this is one of the best reviews of a laptop I've ever seen in it's completeness, comprehensiveness and clarity. It covered every conceivable aspect I would be interested in and did it in such a way and with a clear explanation that I am now able to not only be confident of purchasing a new MacBook Pro, but which one and in which configuration. That is a very important aspect, as I work for a non-profit and need to make a definitive decision and not have to regret it - because I'll have it a very long time. Kudos!
Oh yeah, made my decision too. I went for the base model M1 Pro 14" model. There are some reviews which compare the 8 vs 10 threads and they perform pretty similarly.
It's not that concise man. there's a lot of details - I'm sorry, I'm a software engineer so I wasn't looking at it from the perspective of consumers. You're right, this is a video of clarified a lot for me too! now I know which MacBook pro would be appropriate for me and my needs, I want to get my brother a laptop, so this helps me decide that too!
I’m very impressed with both your ability to speak on task for so long without multiple takes and the smooth editing/splicing when you do. Great work!!!
As someone starting college in January as a IT Major this is the machine I’m going with. I will be getting the 14 with the best Pro processor with the 1tb of storage. My 2009 Unibody Mac Pro doesn’t even work with the software my school requires. I feel old but this will be a welcome upgrade. I really like the M1 Chips. Seems Apple did something right and really nailed it this time around. Also giving the M1 Chips to the 13 was a good way to force users to get the Air or the 14 because the 13 is about useless right now.
"So, there will be a lot of professionals like me who are really happy with these. There is also gonna be a lot of people who totally dont need this power but just have a lot of money to spend and just want to get a nice laptop". There is no better way to describe it.

As someone who stated editing in 1981 with 16mm film, then moved to 1” video, ¾” video, Betacam, Avid, Premiere, Final Cut Pro Studio (I was apple’s broadcast guy in Asia PAC for a couple of years working with a whole lotta big houses in the region) I have to agree with you 100%. M1 powered MBPs are the tool that finally frees content creators from a desk in a room…anywhere. I thought we had hit that point in 2004-6, but this makes all that look and feel like serious delusion. I’m running Resolve, for a whole lot of reasons, and I refuse to work with more than 4k, but lately I’ve been including more footage from a GoPro 10 in 265 “just because “. As a test, I have transcoded less of it and my DSLR footage to ProRes, which has been my workflow for almost 20 years just as a way to avoid the unavoidable space bar struggle to play thing. I decided on the 14” purely because I (usually) do my work out of a backpack roaming around South East Asia, and I can slide this into my 30L everyday pack, with cameras, lenses, lights and get on a scooter/bus/train/plane and go to the next location. I totally get what you mean about a few of the ports being not quite as bleeding edge as the could have been, but, as someone who’s dropped far more money than they should have on aluminium shells over the years, there were so often too many over specced ports that were a total waste. Case in point: Thunderbolt. Great standard, piss poor adoption by the marketplace. Apple users were never a big enough demographic for affordable devices to take advantage of it. Finally the rest of the user world has caught up and we’re getting the advantage of usability and reasonable price. So, all things considered, I’m happy as a pig in mud, and once things open up again, I’m really excited to get back on a plane and actually be able to do serious, serious content creation absolutely, unequivocally anywhere I want to lift the lid on my sweet little space grey piece of joy.
Marques: "I'm not sure why the space grey laptop doesn't also come with a space grey magsafe connector... that would've been a nice touch" Apple: *Takes notes*
I have the lowest end 16 inch. Walked into the Apple Store the other day before a job and said F it and picked one up. I had last years M1 13 in MBP and this is miles ahead of it. If this will be your only machine I would suggest getting one of the beefier ones. But I am more than happy to use this.

@@frstesiste7670 we won’t hit 1TB RAM on avg in 2030. There is a point of diminishing returns. I’d imagine things would start leveling out at 32-64GB of RAM as standard

That amount of ram is quite useful for me. I don't need the M1 Max luckily, my compile times are mostly aimed at cpu. All those ports. They are expensive. Totally worth the penny.
Amazing review and definitely getting one of the 14" M1 Pro Max. Check your external monitor needs before you choose your version! I don't do a lot of video editing but I do use a workstation with either dual (or more) monitors and I've been experimenting with the larger curved monitors at the higher 220hz refresh rate. I nearly purchased a 13" M1 but thankfully someone pointed out that the M1 (on the laptop) only supports one external display. I did a little digging and: M1 - 1 External display M1 Pro - 2 External displays M1 Pro Max - up to 4 external displays That was a game changer for me.
They've done that a few times. The first PowerBook, the first MacBook Pro, and the 2018 MacBook Pro come to mind as well for being stunningly excellent for their times.

I'm old. I once had a Tadpole laptop with a Sun SPARC CPU, and we needed a bunch of them to troubleshoot our embedded processing platforms (Motorola RISC, one of those chips by another name and cooling fan is likely in your fridge or washing machine) - it was running Solaris with CDE, and not only was it a credible desktop replacement (compared to Windows NT) It could run diagnostics at full speed on equipment in the field. Like... FULL SPEED, and you had a full hour of battery life to play with. The new MacBooks remind me of that... Only they don't cost 30k in '90s money, and have Mac OS instead of Solaris with CDE tack-welded on top.
That was by far my favorite intro that you have ever produced. Incredible animations and transitions. Setting the bar higher every video. Nice job Marques
As someone who has never owned an apple product I must say this laptop is really nice especially compared to windows laptops! Only thing that I don't like is the smearing/ghosting when moving anything on the screen at 120hz. I bought this laptop for Blender 3d because Apple joined the dev fund to support Metal. Blenders viewport performance is extremely good and the trackpad support is perfect. I also just found out that Windows 10 Blender releases don't support trackpad gestures like Mac releases of blender do. I tried a trackpad on my windows 10 pc for Blender and it was terrible. But there is a patch D7660 Add support for precision touchpad gestures on Windows which I beleive is just now being integrated into blender on windows 10.

Looking forward for that video after the next MacBook Pro launch.
i m from future and i knew it they suck
Never knew how much I appreciated your reviews until I found myself refreshing this channel since the new MacBooks came out!! Awesome. Got the 16” max, can’t wait.
Btw fun fact: while they look thicker another reviewer actually measured and turns out the 14” is thinner than the old 13” MBP at the thickest point- the clever tapered edge design just made the old ones look even thinner.
apple lists the dimensions; 13" m1 mbp is indeed slightly thicker
the old mbp's didnt have a wedge design i think you meant mabook airs
@@samarthmadhivanan5726 I think he's referencing the taper of the old MBP's, they have a "bevel" that looks like the edge, but then get thicker if you look beyond the edges, whereas these new ones don't have the bevel around the edge and just carry the thickness all the way to the edge so they look thicker.
i hate wedge design. Some manufacturers even trying to make sqare laptops look wedge. Ugly as kack. Glad this trend is over

Can AutoCAD not be run on MacOS?
@@sebzapata There’s a mac version. When I was a student awhile back there were missing features and usage was different. Not sure if its changed since then. Either way, when 95% of all other engineering software needs Windows, its not enough for companies to even consider a Mac for professional use
Absolutely, 100%!!!

These macbooks are truly masterpieces of electronics.
5:28 one thing worth noticing is they've moved the headphone jack to the left, so as most headphones have their cable running from the left earpiece, it prevents a lot of cable mess

I'm a dev too on the 14" M1 Pro. It smooths out the rough edges everywhere, shaving off random seconds and minutes. No huge signifiers like FinalCut for me, but quicker build times and overall snappier performance make me happy I upgraded.

@History Decolonized I noticed that it wasn’t around it but it would’ve been off center so actually it was a perfect edit :)
What's so special... It's basic.
@@brokeguy5607 nice one
@History Decolonized you need to decolonize ur brain first...how do you think centering works?
"I'll wear socks and sandals, like Linus" spoken like a punishment 😂
And mostly single right 😅
…it is…
Lol
I reeeeeally hope they don't add face ID in the next version, and that it continues to have a notch, just so I get to see Marques using socks and sandals
@@graciouscompetentdwarfrabbit haha

17:02 Its M1 MAX MBP That did the render at 4mins and 6secs. I love this video as it was one of the most informative reviews that came out till date. Love that at least somebody made a video about that Dec that is built in this time.
I am actually worried how marques didnt notice that yet
I dont see anything running at the screen.
Can not wait for the iMac 27" M1
Can only imagine the possibilities with an M-Series iMac Pro. Looks as though we'll see M2 around next year with even more performance, not to mention the Pro/Max level Apple Silicon. If pros can work with 8K Red Raw footage with minor hiccups on an M1 Max... 🤯
@Bruh Bruh bruh
Can't wait to see the price. Always good fun.
@@ElAndresRodriguez you know a tip; just ignore this random-ass android fanboy who lives in his imaginary world where android laptops exist
@Bruh Bruh What the fuck is an "Android" laptop? Are you talking about chromebooks? Tf?
I don't even want a Macbook, but I love watching your videos because they're so informative and easy to watch. Unreal.
There have been many cool pieces of Tech this year
But this is the one review I have been most hyped for in a long long long time
I travel with the M1 Mac MINI, now it can retire too :)
Once you edit on a M1, there is no going back.
@Bruh Bruh If you’re gonna hate on Apple at least don’t say stupid ass comments without any context and at least back up your opinion 💀🤣
There are no android computers lmfao do you mean Windows or ChromeOs? Even then macOS with Apple silicon powered computers have the advantage for power to wattage ratio. There’s numbers all over the internet. Fandroids like you are clearly missing screws in your heads🤣
@Bruh Bruh Android doesn't have computers
@Bruh Bruh I used to follow that logic but this is undeniably a great device. I use an android and it's great for the price but an iPhone is perfect for the average consumer who can afford it. Also tf is an android pc, huawei matebook? Chromebook lmao.

Can yall PLEASE release a "how to" for the intro because that was insane. Either on here or on The Studio because that was awesome
just upgrade my 16" 2019 MBP, and bought an M1 max 16"... I'm an architect. Could not be more happy
It’s exciting to see how much power they are packing into smaller form factors, I feel like I am currently living in the future 🚀. The base M1 is more than sufficient for the simple video editing and affinity designer stuff I do so I’ll keep it for a few years and be totally happy watching these reviews!
@Bruh Bruh android laptops ? I'm sorry, genuinely asking what is that
@Bruh Bruh always you. Bruh Bruh... Android ?
I’m just happy that the M1 MBP 8 GB (the one from 2020) is more than enough, the fact that it can beat a laptop which has a core i9 (looking at you 15” MBP) is just plain awesome!
@Bruh Bruh excuse me, Android laptops? Stop being a fanboy, android laptops don’t exist
@Bruh Bruh Android is trash. Apple’s chips have always been faster since Apple has been manufacturing themselves.
I’ve been waiting for this review for the the last two weeks and you didn’t disappoint 🔥🔥👏🏽
"I'll wear socks and sandals for a day, like Linus." 😂
Security blanket more ports? Good grief Charlie Cook.
Can’t wait for linus to see this
Take that Linus
I started as an amateur audiophile years ago when I found this channel. I was probably in middle/highscool school and I'm 24 now. That headphone jack brought me some old school excitement even though I'm completely happy with my airpods/ATH M50s
"Saving you a dongle" is such a first world convenience 😂 I'm all for it though
19:13 this is a really important point. Yes these are expensive machines, but for pros you basically get than money back in productivity. It's an investment!
not really there are better laptops that are cheaper than the macbook
@@stalksy8969 for example?
@@weikaiqin9424 Idk you gotta look it up but there are better laptops that are cheaper or around the same price
@@stalksy8969 For example?
@@stalksy8969 Sure but they'll have disadvantages (worse battery life, worse screen, doesn't run MacOS if you need FCP etc)
I am watching this right now on my 14" M1 Pro base model. This laptop does everything that I need it to do. Photo editing here and there and occasionally playing Diablo 3.
Marques Brownlee, I sooooo genuinely enjoy watching your reviews and yes, I just ordered the MacBook Pro 14" with 32GB Ram. All I'll be using it for is purely for music composition. This is the first time to have a MacBook Pro as normally I'm based on iMac's, MacPro and iPad Pro. I have had MacBook in the passed along time ago, but I was advised that the best for a small home music studio will be a MacBook Pro 14". Thank you for your brilliant and positivity you bring to us in a happy and sincere way. Jean-Claude from Melbourne, Australia ...
@Marques. Your introduction part is getting next level. I have been admiring it quiet long and Specially for this one you nailed it.
16:59 Should say "M1 Max MBP: 4:06". Great review, I can confirm that on my new 14" MBP I don't really notice the notch anymore (despite wanting to use a wallpaper that is black at the top of it) despite using a OnePlus 7T Pro without any kind of punch hole or notch :)
Thanks for the detailed review MKB, it’s really mind blowing what Apple has done with their new silicon, just amazing.
I've been using an M1 Pro MBP 16" for nearly a month... and wow. A significant upgrade form my last MacBook Pro. Really loving everything about it!
Never saw you this excited about a product like this one. And I agree, 16” M1 Max is the way to go. Really happy to see this performance. Apple killed the laptop market. Everyone will have to re calibrate.
I don’t think I agree.... these computers are beasts but most people don’t have 3k to spend or don’t even need a laptop that good... I’m running a Lenovo i7 9gen and a 1060 laptop and I can do basically whatever I need. I think the market will truly change when these monsters Apple created become like 1grand used condition
@@miguelrocha2157 like mentioned a couple times, these are tools, your i7 1060 is nowhere close to the power of this macbook pro. the macbook pros competitors, are in fact around the 2k-3k price range. you cant just randomly pick a good value laptop and say that the macbook pro is too expensive, there are people out there who need this kind of power on the go, people like marques himself. marcelo is still right, theres still no laptop in the current market that is capable of doing what the new macbooks can.
@@miguelrocha2157 Until we start talking about battery life, fan noise, speakers, screen, build quality, and everything else that's not related to the performance. A laptop is so much more than just the performance... For how long can you use your Lenovo on your lap, without roasting your nuts? I'd now

@@yeehaw5741 yea right... try gaming on those laptops ;)
Duuuuude! about time Marques. I have been waiting for you to upload this video. Now I can finally make a decision, btw the man tells it like it is and that is "Next Level" baby.
I may have ordered one this afternoon before seeing this so here’s to hoping it was the right decision.
Got a 14” Max
I just love the intro, especially the music. It's stuck in my head
Choosing a device is always about what apps you are gonna use and how much performance you want out of the apps. But, it's so good to see MacBook Pro finally gaining the name again.
"I'll wear socks and sandals for a day like Linus" 😂🤣😭
12:31! That was perfect..
Thank you so much for the complete honesty. I do love these Macs but to be honest I'm perfectly happy with my M1 from last year. It never had any kind of problems, the battery still lasts forever and runs all my workflows flawlessly. I'll keep it, for now, will delay the upgrade. I think I might eventually upgrade to the 16" m1 max when it drops in price a little bit, maybe refurbished, it's def too much just for a "nice to have".
Man, you should give seminars to RUclipsrs on how to review things. Great review!
