great to hear someone saying that users on M series probably don’t need to upgrade. i personally am upgrading from m1 pro to m4 max but that’s due to me not having enough RAM (should have bought an m1 max originally). if you aren’t out of RAM on M series, they still smoke pretty much anything else on the market…
Exactly my thought process, I have a 16” M3 Pro. I won’t upgrade until one of the following happens, whichever one comes first. 1- no more macOS updates for my Mac 2- a new Mac releases with ALL of the following, a chip at least 2X the performance in both CPU and GPU, at least 2X the RAM, at least 4 more hours of battery life, higher brightness, thinner and lighter design, and thinner bezels. Some other nice to haves (can compromise on those) would be, cellular, no notch (although it doesn’t bother me in the slightest), bigger display (yes I’d totally buy a 17” or 18”), better keyboard coating (less oily), less reflective display WITHOUT COMPROMISING SHARPNESS OR COLORS, larger trackpad, touchscreen and Apple Pencil support (although it has to be 0 latency like iPhones not like laggy touch laptops).
just upgraded from the M2 Pro 14" to the M4 Pro 16" and see a HUGE difference in battery life, only regret is not getting the nano screen, but other than that I love the upgrade!
I'm a proud owner of the M1 16" model Macbook Pro but last week I bought the 14" M4 Pro Macbook Pro. At first it was a bit scary to downgrade in size, but for me personally I prefer this size more over the 16" model.
Currently using a 15" MBP (Intel) from 2015. Its battery is in its final death throes. Battery is swollen and case has warped as a result. Track Pad goes wacky every so often requiring a hard shutdown and restart. In the process of getting a new MBP with M4 Pro chip. Can't wait to see the amazing difference that everyone is talking about
Nano texture is a big choice! I always wanted a macbook and wanted that beautiful glass display too! But for my first Macbook ever , after going to an apple store and seeing Nano texture, I went with Nano texture! The colors still popped and 1000nits means I should have no issues with brightness! Excited!
I upgraded my MacBook Pro Retina from 2013 today to a MacBook Air M2! I didn’t think I needed the MacBook Pro (at least this year) but I’m so glad to use the Apple Silicon!
The main reason for me was the TB 5 and nano texture. Big for me as I work outdoors and the reflections have been hard to deal with. The TB5 is also why I got the mac mini M4 Pro model. T4 while nice the 3x bandwidth of T5 makes it very future proof. Don’t skimp if you plan to have multiple displays running high resolution. Plus T5 will allow you to transfer SSD external drives so much faster.
I was gonna get a used MBP M1 Max with really good specs, but I'm leaning towards the MBP M4 Pro, due to longer support from Apple. At some point Apple will stop allowing older M chips to get the latest OS, and security updates. I want a longer life out of my machine.
Honestly, as an M1 MBA owner with upgraded 16GB of memory, the only reason I'm in the market for an upgrade is to have a better display. Don't get me wrong, the Retina Display on the M1 MBA is nice, but it is definitely by 2018 standards since it's the refresh the M1 MBA is based off of. OLED can't come to Macs soon enough.
I have a 2018 MacBook Pro. (intel i7) It still works very well, but Im going to school now and Im leaning towards a 14" M4 Pro. I hope the one inch less screen size is not too noticeable to me and I'll miss the Touch Bar.
Justine, love your review, one other difference is that the base M4 models only have 1 cooling fan, while those with M4 Pro or M4 Max have 2, which means you can work them harder for longer vs the base models, before the processors are slowed down (thermal throttled) due to over heating. On top of that, the 16" models, due to their larger size, provide a larger 'heat sink' for heat to spread across/into, so they are more likely to delay the onset of thermal throttling vs the 14" models. Whether you run into that depends on what tasks you're doing, of course.
I have a MacBook Pro 2020. It’s basic but does have an upgraded hard drive. The computer is beginning to feel slow when pulling up simple websites but I still use it. I don’t believe I can buy a new one anytime soon.
Why get the 14” max fully spec’d since it has thermal and battery issues. Will run alot hotter, about 10-20% slower even when hooked up to external monitor. I know u know this but u might want to do some testing before committing to the 14” fully spec’d.

Even on the M1 Pro I run into issues where if I add noise reduction my render will take overnight. But if I don’t have effects like that it goes in real time. I don’t have that issue enough for me to upgrade but it happened on an important project last year
I'm a cybersecurity student using a basic MacBook Air with the M1 chip, which has worked well for three years. While I have a desktop Windows PC for when I’m at home, as my MacBook can't handle everything, the MacBook is primarily for on-the-go use, especially for school. I rely on virtualization, mainly for Linux distributions on ARM, and manage memory efficiently by minimizing GUI usage. However, I’m considering an upgrade to a MacBook Pro with the M4 Pro chip, potentially with increased storage, especially if I need to run Windows VMs while mobile. Would this upgrade better handle these demands, or would my current setup continue to suffice?
nano texture is nice, microLED (inOrganicLED) with flicker free dimming could convince me to purchase. i've known about the various textures for making displays matte, it's class from Apple to stick to gloss before adopting a more advanced matte texture.
@@HRM2010 But how to deal with the white pots? I've seen people using filters for it, would they be good and won't crack the screen when closing the lid?
I currently have the full spec 16" M1 and I ordered the full spec 14" M4, mainly because i bounce between docking stations, but im wondering if the size difference is going to bug me. I cant wait until mine gets delivered.
The fully maxed-out 14” MacBook Pro doesn’t perform as well as the 16” due to thermal throttling. So, if you’re going for the 14”, choose it with the Pro chip, and if you need the performance of the Max chip, the 16” is the better choice.
I used my late brother's old MacBook (it was an Intel) and let me tell ya... I would've thrown it out the window had I been running Final Cut Pro. I got the M2 now, but I think I'm good for now.
I bought a LV bag kislux years ago. I took it to the LV store in my town last week to have it repaired. The store clerk inspected my bag and immediately told me that the bag was of good quality. She pulled a current bag out of inventory and compared the tags and I found zero differences
I feel that the best time to upgrade will be with the M5. Otherwise, I’ll just want to upgrade again from M4 to M5. My MacBook Pro 2018 is a beast, but yes... the M1-M4 will definitely outperform it. Still, I think I can wait one more year. They really need to remove that notch
Honestly I forget I have notch on my iPad the notch is not so bad I kinda notice more than Dynamic Island in my phone more than the notch but both aren’t bad I feel like the Dynamic Island on Mac would be annoying
That smooth and quick OWC ad was super helpful honestly, I pick up my 16 inch today and was wanting to upgrade my external drive to thunderbolt 5 so that was helpful
If getting a 14 inch do you think an M4 pro chip 14/20 with 48 gig gram to terabyte storage or M4 max chip 14/32 with 36 ram is a better option for a video editing? I’m trying to figure out if that extra memory bandwidth/GPU and media engine is necessary for a video editing, or the M4 pro is powerful enough and the extra ram will help? I had an M3 Max chip but the 14 inch was heating up already so I hear the Max chip can be better suited with a 16 inch… 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I am also considering and confused between these two. If you get any updates or any video pls share. If I find anything I will also share. Thank you so much 😊
@ thanks! Seems that the M4 Max chip isn’t best suited in a 14 inch… I’m pretty positive. The M4 pro is going to be plenty powerful so I think that’s what I’m gonna go for :) if you get any info please lemme know too 🙏🏼 now I’m trying to figure out if the nano texture is worth it lol I hear conflicting idea on that too. Apparently it can possibly ware down in time :/
@@JustineCooksVeganThanks for sharing 😊 I have also come to know that 36gb of ram is quite less for these AI enabled chips(Not future proof also). And if we compare 36vs48 Ram and 20vs36 GPU performance there is not much difference. I was hoping for something like game mode, because of the focus mode.. and I’ve been talking about it online - just as I’ve been talking about 3D and they’ve incorporated it and it makes me feel secure and seen and heard because both are here
Hey @iJustine What are your thoughts on whether the 1 year product cycles are good for consumers and also if they are really good for innovation? I feel like things were better when Apple had more time to work on polish/bugs and implement bigger things (I'm thinking how Leopard was a huge deal that didn't come a year after the previous, and how even Snow Leopard was more polish than new features and probably still the best macOS ever released.)
Wrong! The 14” still has 24 hours of battery life because even though the battery is smaller it has a lower power chip. Read the footnotes! 👍 (Footnote No.3 on the 14” M4)
Remember when "nano" texture was an Apple default and they were one of the last to offer all glass - that made me happy because I always that all glass is annoying but not it cost us hundreds for it?
My only concern is thermal throttling on the 14". Need a 40-core Max but many tubers in the past have advised against getting a Max in a 14". Hope I don't get shortchanged for the M4 version.

The apple watchband looks so premium and cool! is its nomad titanium?
Are you guys nano texture team or glossy one? Why if so? I'll buy one next year. I never got a mac so I'm not sure what to expect.
Glass. The nano texture stuff SCRATCHES, you will end up having to deal with apples planned obsolescence in no time.
@@7long but is it possible to use another screen protector to apply the mate finish? or would it damage the screen when closing the lid?
Gloss - nano texture results in duller colors and less deep blacks
@@HRM2010 But how to deal with the white pots? I've seen people using filters for it, would they be good and won't crack the screen when closing the lid?
glossy. no argument
The moment that we been waiting omg its here❤
I love my Mac book M2 laptop. I am using it for xcode, and been loving it ever since.
Still have my 16 inch 2018 Intel, it does everything I need it to do extremely well.
*No Space Black Apple Stickers?*
Was so sceptical about nano textyre, but wauw it def is a must have
I used my late brother's old MacBook (it was an Intel) and let me tell ya...
Thunderbolt 5 120GHZ is only for displays, I heard someone say after the release videos.
If nano texture is added to iPad mini then that would great for folks who use the iPad mini as a ereader and sketchbook.
Wanted an M4 Macbook Pro..
After watching i want one even more.
😂
Apparently it can possibly ware down in time :/
@@JustineCooksVeganThanks for sharing 😊
I have also come to know that 36gb of ram is quite less for these AI enabled chips(Not future proof also). And if we compare 36vs48 Ram and 20vs36 GPU performance there is not much difference.
I am going with the regular screen I can manage with reflections but I need more accuracy in colour and contrast. 😊
@@sumitsehrawat18 cool! Yeah I’m excited for the m4 pro with 48 ram, seems like enough! Do you do video editing? The nano texture is still confusing me haha I might just try to out to see
@JustineCooksVegan m4 pro with 48 gb ram is what you want. The more ram the better for video editing
Love your videos! Always did for years!
I am ready to ditch my Intel Mac. but I want the more budget m4 max studio. MacBook Pro is so much more money.
I've never had a MacBook or MacBook Pro ever and now I have one :)
does macbook still fail due to screen flex cable fracture ?
I think the 2018s fixed that
your desk setup very cool
Love your Desktop set-up ~ Sweet
Does this mac have eye tracking because the iPad Air with center stage has eye tracking
Does it shoot?
Hi Justine :) I use the FreeStyle Libre 3 too. It's so cool how a device can send Glucose levels to our phones to help us manage it and make sure we are not going too low or too high. Thanks for showing off the M4, sequoia and the new iPhone mirroring app.
do you recommend upgrading from 14" base M3 pro to 14" M4 pro base ?
No one would ever recommend that and you know it. If you want it do it but it would be considered stupid by most.
hell no
I wonder how the M4 Pro compares to the M3 Pro? I'm thinking about getting a 16in model and wonder if the $500 difference between the two is worth it? I'm guessing yes. My existing large, Pro, is a 10 year old 15in Pro from 2014. thanks!
Hmmm.. should get new Mac Mini or Macbook?
I still have the 14" M3 & I'm thinking to change to the new 16" or wait to the M5....
More powerful hardware hopefully means better software down the road..
Which is the best chip for heavy Lightroom edits m4 pro or m4 max???
Go with Mac pro the best one me I go with ryzen threadripper pro 5.4ghz it beautiful this one but only if you can afford it then good .
Should i buy m4 base version or go with m3pro ?
Which is most powerful compared of this two?
Do I justine getting back the product or keeping its?
i don’t know Apple 🍎 at all. just switched from android 🤖. Purchased the 16pm 1tb and am shopping the mbpro 16. this video helps me make the decision and get a better understanding on the display options. thanks Babe
Thinking about getting the 14” looks so sick…Hi Justine love that Mario shirt.
iJustine is 🔥
I’m sure the shirt is going to sell hotter!
I was hoping for something like game mode, because of the focus mode.. and I’ve been talking about it online - just as I’ve been talking about 3D and they’ve incorporated it and it makes me feel secure and seen and heard because both are here
THANK YOU! You convinced me to trade-in my current MacBook Pro and level up to the new one :)
True is those genelec speakers cost a lot more than this new technology for laptops
what do you do with older devices? Do you re sell them or give them away?
I have an Intel MacBook Pro, nope! I don’t want to upgrade. Why? Because of the digital touchbar! I love it, I just wished they never got rid of it. 😞
(Footnote No.3 on the 14” M4)
Remember when "nano" texture was an Apple default and they were one of the last to offer all glass - that made me happy because I always that all glass is annoying but not it cost us hundreds for it?
My only concern is thermal throttling on the 14". Need a 40-core Max but many tubers in the past have advised against getting a Max in a 14". Hope I don't get shortchanged for the M4 version.
Ahhh tell me more
I have 16 inch m1 MacBook pro and def consider going to 14inch whenever I upgrade
Love from India🇮🇳🇮🇳 of West Bengal ❤❤
M4,This is going to be my very first apple experience.
