@@vaf3614 their comment said “windows laptops” so that’s what my response was to. If they said snapdragon chips specifically, then I likely wouldn’t say anything, bc I am personally interested in and researching the Intel ultra chips.
My comment is not about price, but the price is a major plus, the processing power I mentioned on the Nvidia RTX 4070 is insane, you are mistaken to think M4 Max’s integrated graphics is comparable. It might be comparable.. but that makes the Pro and regular GPU non competitive at all. We are talking about Nvidia here. Look up the specs. The Intel ultra 9 is also insane, 24 cores? Wow. I nerd out for a good cpu. Maybe I’m biased bc I’m investing in Intel.
People who get pro machines are more so worried about their intensive workloads rather than battery life. If you want to write a novel in a coffee shop, you should go for a light, portable, efficient machine like the Air. Battery life is a problem on windows machines, but is it worth spending $1000 and sacrificing on processing power? In my opinion and use cases of programming, game dev and digital art, no. Large pro machines are clunky as expected, and lugging them around becomes a chore. I do work at my desk or bed, and I drink coffee at coffee shops. Don’t really mix and match the two.
It would be cool if I got the MBP because I can complete my “ecosystem” as they call it. Easy to airdrop images etc. But tbh, I don’t like when companies restrict users on ecosystems. But business is business, I do get it. But I need that power if you know what I’m sayinn
I’m still researching so we’ll see what happens

As they should be! Gaming laptops are a giant scam anyways, these devices will :
      - Cost more for equal performance than their desktop counterparts
      - Not last as long as normal laptops due to the increased thermal stress, and more power hungry (usually non replaceable) components
      - Have poor battery performance due to said power hungry components
      - Look dumber
      - Be noisier du to more powerful fans.
Personally if I had children, and if my children were to ask me for gaming laptops, I would first tell them all of the above with an annoying voice, and then :
      - Buy a refurbished business grade laptop for like 200 to 400$, which is the only good cost to quality option of the market in my opinion, on which I would maybe even put Linux to ensure maximum productivity (unless weird software is needed for their school)
      - Spend the remainder of my budget on a nice desktop gaming pc
This would give me the added bonus as a parent that I could restrict the usage of the gaming rig without preventing work, if necessary. Not a perfect solution of course, there is still plenty of fun to be had on a business laptop if studies are boring enough, but nice to have the option.

The price being too high is a real stinger as if the rest of the industry were to ditch x86 for ARM, then all these expensive x86 laptops are just gonna be expensive unsupported devices. Honestly, the switch probably won't make too much of a difference for battery life because IMO reason why Apple's chips are doing so good is because they developed their chips on a top shelf bleeding edge node and their developers are an order of magnitude more competent than the people at Microsoft.
We have also gotten used to cheap laptops. If we look at the laptops of 10 years ago, we could have gotten an Acer with a Haswell i5 and a GT 840M for 550. Go back 20+ years to the XP era, you are looking at Pentium laptops for about 1200, and that was back then when Moore's law still had a little bite to it and things became outdated much quicker.

The problem with all the non-Macs isn't the hardware, it's Windows. Yes, they'll benchmark well in terms of battery life/energy efficiency, when they are new (Windows is fresh) and in the hands of reviewers who know what they're doing. But in the hands of an average user, who keeps installing/clicking on a bunch of BS, you inevitably end up with some processes running in the background (that aren't the easiest to identify after the fact even for someone more knowledgeable) that will take the "idle" battery life from 10-15 hours, down to 4 or something. And somehow on Macs that doesn't happen. I've seen it a ton when doing tech support for family & friends with Windows machines and never again after they heed my recommendation to buy a Mac.

As someone who games on their laptop, I feel like the conclusion in this video didn’t really do much for me. It felt like it needed an asterisk of if you do anything other than wanting to play games, then go with a MacBook. As for the laptop market on the windows side, The mobile battery life argument has always been an interesting one to me because while having a long battery life is awesome, I’ve rarely ran into a situation where I needed to be untethered from an outlet for more than 3-5 hours of work. Documents or otherwise. Primarily because my primary use for my laptop is gaming and being unplugged on any system is a bit of a meme performance wise. I don’t know if you ever tried to play Path of Exile on a MacBook but it used to kill my M1 Max in around 3 hours unplugged

Why won't manufactures design the batteries to be easy to swap anymore. Getting a batter out and putting another one in is an ordeal rather than using a switch.

Yesss. But to be fair, Linux isn't known for it's great laptop battery life lol. Linux is more popular on servers, and that's where the bulk of the development goes....
That being said, I have great results running Debian 12 stable

If you have good battery drivers...
I'm still trying to get mint on my framework 13 (Intel 1360p) to not come out of practically not sleeping, as when I close the lid it sometimes just runs the processor full tilt (calculating something ig??) and drains battery + is hot to the touch

@@_reZMy personal experience is with Lenovos mainly Thinkpads and they are awesome on Linux.
The thing you really need is a system that supports S3 sleep.
Windows modern standby is S0 sleep is garbage and is killing the x86 laptop.

The problem with Cinebench is that the entire benchmark fits in cache in most new CPUs. So it can't measure I/O or memory performance at all. AMD has the best cores and very good cache, probably second to Apple. But once it has to touch anything outside the CPU package it looks a lot less good relative to Intel or Apple. I think this is a big reason why the X3D cache makes such a huge difference for AMD CPUs, it helps mask their relatively weak memory access.

For me, Losing the upgradable ram is actually the worst thing especially for people that are really on a budget. It was very useful when you are not able the aford the max RAM early and then upgrade it when you will really need it or when you are able to aford it.

2:43 This is actually because Windows actively sabotages the hardware from sleeping efficiently.
For keeping the power draw low when sleeping, for over 2 decades hardware has supported the S3 sleep state.
Yet Windows nowadays does not use this, instead keeping the chips running in a low power mode.
This to receive notifications while in standby or to wake up a split second faster, or something similarly silly.
Sleep power draw should be as expected when disabling this silly Windows default, but I believe the setting is deeply buried in old configuration panel settings.

I'm looking to get a new laptop, and I'm deciding between a zenbook s14 with the second gen core i9 and a Macbook Pro m3.
Which would you choose, I'm not going to be rendering video o producing media, maybe a little bit of coding.
Which one do you feel is more "future-proofed"?
