My daughter keeps telling me she never wants kids and I told her that I’m glad she knows that and to never let anyone try to pressure her into changing her mind. Parenthood is NOT for everyone.
I agree. It takes someone with strong maternal/paternal instincts, a whole lot of fortitude, compassion, selflessness, and nerves of steel to pursue that path. I respect every parent out there who does it well.
@suntzu-hi6hz To a degree, yes it depends on your environment and people around you but you still have your own choice to make. For example, parents and society gaslighting women into having kids saying it's a wonderful and beautiful thing and when questioned about the problems that come with it are told "it's not that bad" or " You'll get over it." Then some of these women end up having kids and regret it. Instead of getting the proper information and being told it's their duty and job they end up depressed parents with neglected children. Instead of trying to pressure people who don't want kids we should take care of and support those that DO want them and already have kids.
Why not ask men these questions too? Women don't make babies alone. I get women are the ones who get pregnant but men are also part of the responsibility & many refuse to raise their children. Society is quick to attack women for wanting to be childless but men get away with it.
It’s because men can have kids past 40… but I agree with having this conversation with men past the age of 45, since by that point the majority won’t be having a kid anyway
They are not addressing the fact that men also do not want the responsibility of raising children. I have met childfree men that underwent vasectomies.
@@user-lt1jd1ye3vFalse. Male fertility does decline with age, especially after the age of 40. This does not mean a male cannot father a child but the chances are lower than they would be for a male in his 20s because the quality of the sperm decreases over time.Sperm DNA can be damaged during sperm production and transport. This damage is known as DNA fragmentation. High levels of sperm DNA fragmentation have been shown to double the likelihood of a miscarriage occurring as well as births of children with disabilities.
I don't think it's an attack, but usually a woman asks a man for a baby. A man becomes a father when he sees his baby. Motherhood begins at that first sign of pregnancy.
It's actually the middle to upper class who aren't having kids. Which is why they are concerned. Imagine having to invest in low income schools. Why, they may just realize there's been no difference between them and the rich all this time.

Unless you find a partner, you can have children of course. In this economy. You don’t need a villa or expensive cars. Parenthood must be a choice, not an obligation. My maternal grandmother did not want children but since she was a Catholic housewife in the 50's, she had eight. She was not a good mother to those children and the ripple effects are still a serious issue two generations later. I'd rather have a smaller, more secure family than a huge, abusive and dysfunction one.
This, this right here should be the top comment. There's so much generational trauma that could have been avoided if our ancestors had access to birth control, and lived in a time when being child-free wasn't taboo. Over a half of a million children are in foster care, many more subjected to abuse and/or neglect in the homes of their biological children.
@@nadineskye7050 I forgot to mention, another side effect is that only four of the twenty-one cousins in my generation have chosen to be parents. We know we are very capable of repeating the cycle of abuse and have decided we'd rather stay childfree than risk that.
Exact same story here. Grandma was an Irish Catholic farmer’s wife in the 50’s-60’s and she had seven kids, would’ve been 8 but she lost a baby when a cow kicked her. My grandma is not a bad person but nowadays she 100% would’ve been arrested for child neglect. My mom and all her siblings are super screwed up and the four of them that are still alive need therapy big time lol.
same here, my mother had five children and seemed like she didn’t want that many of us and was abusive: i am still suffering the repercussions. But the sad thing is this country keeps importing people from the war-locking abrahamic religions where the female body is a surrogate for the military industrial complex. So, it seems like women either have too many kids or none at all. The government needs to support, or at least not discourage FREE Empowered women born in America having children: but instead they support immigrants from enslaved disempowered women having children to keep feeding the machine.
1. Many can’t afford it. The economy is much different now than the 1950's - 1980's 2. Finding a good partner is harder than you think. Lots of infidelity, paternity fraud, and abuse. 3. Many suffer from mental health issues. Adding the stress of child rearing will exacerbate symptoms and lead to lower quality of life for the child
As someone who was raised by a mother who made a point to tell me how they didn’t want a second kid and all the reason I was not wanted we need to stop this harmful belief that women should have kids and everything will magically work out brilliantly. No, women do not automatically see their baby and love them. No having a baby doesn’t magically make you have money or time for kids. Honestly, I now feel bad for my mom. She did not have the life she wanted and resented me for it. No one should be forced into that dynamic.
In the real world, no one cares if women are having kids or not. Those that ask if you are going to, are just curious and don't GAF if you do or don't. I'm childless but I moved in with my sister to help her raise her kids since the dad doesn't want to be involved with his kids and let me tell you, I make it very, very, very clear to my nieces *NOT* to have kids unless they are married to a provider, protector, and somebody who *WANTS* to have kids and even then, I tell them, still don't have kids. It's too risky on all fronts. All my nieces have to do is look at their own childhood to see that that's not what they need.
I was raised in a middle class mainstream Mormon family. I’m one of 10 children. My mother was basically just a breeder. My older sisters were raising younger siblings and we were all emotionally and physically neglected. Neither of my parents had the emotional capacity to be raising so many children 🤦 I had two, even tho I was pressured to have more by my Mormon mother. Three would have pushed me over my mental capacity. I’m glad I followed my instincts and stopped.
When I was a kid, I recall reading a news article about some study that found that married couples without kids were happier and more likely to stay married than couples with kids. As a kid, I was very offended, but as an adult I now understand those findings.
I love kids, I have FIVE! 3 adults, 2 teenagers. And I am definitely NOT pressuring any of my kids to have kids like my mother did. If they want to have children, fine. If not, also VERY fine.
I get it but do we not realize that not having kids effects society as a whole? Who's going to take care of all of the old people when there aren't enough children to replace them in the health field? Many health clinics and hospitals are ALREADY understaffed. They will be incredibly more so in about 20-40 years. Also if any of y'all plan on living on social security payments when you retire, forget it. There will not be enough tax payers by the time you're old to fund it anymore. Long story short? The less kids we have now the less healthcare workers, retirement home workers, constructing workers, farmers, retail workers, etc. There will be. Statistics show that in just 30-50 years, old people in America will far outweigh young people. What are we going to do then? 🤷♀️
My niece and her husband wanted children and the grandparents wanted children. The grandparents agreed to be involved and help or it was a no go. Parents need help and breaks.

The burden is always on the mother to be perfect in a society that doesn’t support women at all. You want women to have kids. Value her. When an unborn fetus has more rights than the woman carrying it. Why have kids at all. Society is creating a prison sentence.
The living being you chose to create and that has your DNA is not a thing nor a "prison sentence." The living being only becomes that when you don't see him/her as a human being and when you don't want to take responsibility for your own actions. All this is done in an effort to make yourself not feel guilt of your choices and when you horribly dispose of him/her. Women have the right to say no in bed. That's when "my body my choice" starts, but most radical feminists think women are feral and primates who can't say no and need to have abortion stations. That's disgusting and makes all women look like primates.
Yet if she is pregnant she is shamed and slammed by society. Im glad women are choosing not to fall to traditional roles. Not worth it in America anymore

I'm sorry you feel that way. I also raised 3 kids and I would do it all again in a heartbeat. In fact, I wanted 4! It wasn't easy every minute of every day, but nothing in life is easy, and never has been for any generation before us. I don't think anyone should have kids if they don't want to be a parent for life. Even when they are grown, they are still your kids for the rest of your life. I look forward to big family holidays with lots of grandchildren! Luckily my kids are good, well adjusted kids with no health issues or behavioral issues. They are all young adults interested in having families of their own someday. The challenge for them will be finding potential spouses that also want children.
Do the children who are already here have all their basic needs met? I hear that some children are still hungry. Let's take care of that first. No child should be hungry in America.
As a mom of two, I totally understand this. Motherhood and parenthood is not for everyone. If you don’t truly want children or aren’t truly committed to taking good care of them, then please don’t have children. It’s a huge sacrifice and commitment to have kids. It’s not for everyone.

In this economy? People can’t even afford a place to live for themselves. Having children is really only an option afforded to the wealthy. People who end up having kids in poverty are stressed out, can be abusive to the kids because of that, the kids might end up in foster care (which is also typically bad); or they just pop out kids to get extra income tax returns and benefits, and couldn’t care less about them. Don’t have kids for the sake of checking a box. Get married, establish a home, get out of debt, then maybe consider having a kid. Remember you’ll be missing work when they’re sick, you should be involved in their school activities, you have to take them to doctors appointments, sometimes they’ll break your stuff, many people can’t handle all that, and will end up inflicting trauma on their kids.

Generational trauma is real, and it takes three generations on average, to undo it.
The economy is much different now than the 1950's - 1980's
2. Finding a good partner is harder than you think. Lots of infidelity, paternity fraud, and abuse.
3. Many suffer from mental health issues. Adding the stress of child rearing will exacerbate symptoms and lead to lower quality of life for the child
The 1970s saw massive inflation, kicking off in 1971
THIS!!!!
It’s the same for men. Divorce court and child support systems ruin men’s lives. Won’t be getting married in America.

I think it’s great that a lot of women are pursuing childless lives. For all history, no one has batted an eye when a male of any age didn’t have children. There are many people who would like to have a child. But there is no support for people who want to have a child..childcare is hard to find..it's very expensive.. healthcare costs are skyrocketing..and IVF is not only expensive, but getting harder to access...they don't make it easy here
Truth.
I can't afford healthcare for myself. I can't imagine having a child.
Healthcare is the most expensive part.
There are All kinds of resources to get a free education if you are in poverty. I went to college with many people that came from poverty. They educated themselves, Saved and invested money, Then Made families.
Thank you for getting the truth out there. You're absolutely right

Raising one kid cost me $1500 more a month. Child care, food, renting extra bedroom as a single parent above property line. My kid acted out because I was too tired to after working.
I’m assuming you make a good amount of money and do not qualify for medi-cal, food stamps, and state funded childcare? The only major cost I’ve had is braces.
Statistically it costs $300,000 to raise ONE child from 0-18 years in the U.S.

Risking a miscarriage or ectopic right now is a bad idea in some places.
Not just in those places. As a pregnant person you are also forbidden to leave the state / nation you are born in and live, because otherwise you could get proper healthcare in any other state.
Changing shitty diapers, getting puked on, no sleep, no freedom, dealing with other expenses. It's a big no for me glad I made the choice to stay childfree
Those occurrences aren’t forever. Some tough years in the beginning but it levels out and children when you are old can be a blessing -- or not.. depending on how they’re raised and genetic predispositions.
It’s a gamble.
@@bigthunder7002 it’s about the choices these kids make as adults regardless of genetics or how they were raised. More like dumber because there's no point being a woman if you aren't a mother. Watch, in 10 years, women will be complaining about not being able to have babies.
I would encourage you to consider all the beauty and goodness that children offer. I have 4 small children of my own and I could never imagine life (anyone's life) without them. They are precious to me and my husband but also all of those in my community who have gotten to know them and love them. They are worth any sacrifice and more.
@@patty378 That's fine for you, but if it's not fine for other women, then that's perfectly ok too. I chose not to have any kids, and it was absolutely the best thing I ever did. If you think that you're going to guilt and gaslight women into having children when they don't want them, think again.
There is something awful about the term "child free"...like "cancer free," "drug free," "fat free," "nicotine free"....It suggest that children are something negative and should be avoided. Even though I feel that women should decide for themselves whether to be a parent or not, I will never use the term "child free."
@kristinab1078 I think "child-free" works best.
With how messed up things are now… would you really want to bring a life into this world? You can adopt children as well as pets. We have brought this on ourselves.
Just because you can adopt children doesn’t mean it should be an aspiration. Adopted children are not blank slates and come with their own trauma and histories.
@@mollyb1983that why we should not have kids cause of us or past peoples made it this way . We have to want it or we fuck them up and ourselves more down we all go. Be bit of hate there.
@sparklefairy34 wrong. It’s not about the people who selfishly wish to obtain children by any means necessary. It’s about the children and families who are objectified, traumatized and marginalized by the adoption industry and by those who think they’re “doing a good thing”.
@mollyb1983 my aunt adopted 2 babies in the foster care system from abusive families. My little cousins are well-adjusted teens now and they'd disagree with your depiction of their mother.
@@Hi.No. that’s great for your aunt and cousins. Your story is not an isolated incident, however and your cousins still carry trauma whether anyone decides to acknowledge it or not.
Child free is fabulous.
I have friends that choose to remain child free but still like spending time with children of friends and relatives. The biggest difficulty they all have is other people shaming them for their choice. I chose to have only 2 children and it was by choice. I knew when I learned I was expecting again, my daughter was a little over a year old, that I wanted a tubal ligation after my son was born, I was 21 years old, this was in 1978. Dr. I was seeing told me that was a decision that I needed to make with my husband and it was too soon, like I was incapable of making that decision for myself. I kept insisting with every Dr. in the group. On the delivery table a different Dr. asked if I still wanted the tubal ligation I said loudly "Do it !" Never regretted that decision because I knew I would never want more than 2 children and I absolutely did not want an unplanned future pregnancy despite people telling me "you'll regret that later". I am 67 have 2 grown children with families, good education, good lives and good childhood memories, because of my conscious decision to have the number of children I knew I could financially and emotionally support.
My son is 32 and refuses to have children. And thats just fine.
