Or another interpretation: In front of Messmer stands someone who, by all accounts, should be spurned by the grace of Gold and forsaken just as he is. He, who had obediently followed her orders of bringing ruin to the Hornsent and ruling over the Land of Shadow for who knows how long. He, who had to live by a fire and curse within him that he so despised yet was discared, presumbably out of fear from Marika. In that moment, he had come to realize that his mother had truly forsaken him. From Software rarely ever uses cutscenes but when they do, they make sure it goes hard af 🔥 "Soon Tarnished, thou will be taken in the jaws of the Abyssal Serpent, shorn of light" 10/10 boss
The delivery of those lines is so nuanced and full of character that I had to watch it again. You can really picture his full character and emotional state by listening to him.
In the intro, Messmer mentions that for some reason unknown to him, Marika gave permission to the Tarnished, probably to come back to the Lands Between and claim the Elden Ring. Messmer was ordered to kill anything “devoid of light”, so despite the Tarnished having Marika’s approval, he still tries to kill the Tarnished. In the second scene, he says that he doesn’t want to be ruled by a Tarnished. Then he apologizes to Marika because he’s either about to kill the Tarnished (which Marika wouldn’t want) or because he’s embracing the serpent curse that Marika hated.
Best boss fight in the DLC, my opinion. Beautifully created character, cutscenes, and attacks were harmonious. Fighting him successfully made it feel like a dance. So fun!
The pause in his speech between 1.00-1.10 with subtle music change gets me every time….as a musician AND as someone who appreciates the level of voice acting here it just gives me CHILLS ❤
These cutscenes are amazing and also what’s amazing too is we get to see what heavy flame really is in this cutscenes, it’s the abyssal serpent’s darkness infused with flame
It's so good how disappointed Messmer sounds when he discovers we're tarnished. There's scorn, but also the sadness of a kid who has been abandoned by his mother, forgotten in a hidden land, having devoted his entire life for the golden order, himself a heretic monster hiding the serpent inside him, looking how a being he despises has been chosen by Marika and guided to lordship. Incredible voice acting.
-You will witness true horror. Now rot. -Wilt thou be taken in the jaws... Of the abyssal serpent, shorn of light. Then I proceeded to kill both with a random ahh walking cane I looted from the literal floor of a building.
Love how confused Messmer is. All this time he's killing those who he deemed lower than him and his people, and all of a sudden a Tarnished, without a Grace, showed up in his doorstep, detected by his Snake, he's like "What? How? No way"
I can only imagine the hatred boiling in Messmer when he says, "Thou’rt Tarnished, it seemeth." Think about how many ages he must have stood in the land of shadow alone, completely unaware of what happened to his mother or why he was scorned and abandoned. And now, he finds us-a tarnished champion who has usurped his birthright and slain all of his kin. I Imagine in his mind he is like: "This wretched unworthy creature is the one responsible for obliterating my bloodline?" It's no surprise he battles us with such ferocity. Messmer's not just trying to kill us;, he's determined to eviscerate us so thoroughly that not a single memory of our existence will remain.
I love how he is a bit baffled that a Tarnished invaded his castle and is challenging him. The wa he says "Thou’rt Tarnished, it seemeth" feels like he caught in surpise.
I've personally always stuck to Marika being the gloam eyed queen/mother of truth, and the snakes shadow wrapping around the statue of Marika made me a true believer. @@roadroad1695they blew all the budget on this cutscene
All sound completely cutting out at 0:17 is so chilling. I LOVE IT!
You are the only one I've seen that points this out hats off to you it's definitely my favorite moments out of all the cutscenes
The delivery of those lines is so nuanced and full of character that I had to watch it again. You can really picture his full character and emotional state by listening to him.
The way his voice tone changes from "Mongrel Intruder..." to the next line. Great job on the VA.
Give this voice actor more roles in this voice. Let him fucking shine.
When the audio stops when he comes into frame is so just UGHH ❤
Voice actor did NOT get paid enough I can tell ya that
His name is Jack Barton
it was better in the gameplay trailer and they downgraded
@@lorenerd7627agreed, I wonder why the hell they changed it, the lines were perfectly delivered in the trailer
It was sad to hear he got swapped
@@ayla-40they’re both great but the new one has a much more serious tone. Also his second phase voice acting is perfect.
Best boss fight in the DLC, my opinion. Beautifully created character, cutscenes, and attacks were harmonious. Fighting him successfully made it feel like a dance. So fun!
"Soon tarnished , wilt thou be taken in jaws " - gives me chill everytime
such beautifully designed character my jaw hit the floor .. and that voiceeeeee
2:01 the phew gets me Everytime 😂
0:18 the sound cutoff has to be the best thing ever gets me everytime miyazaki is truly the goat🤧
I didn’t know they put Daemon Targaryen in the game
He sounds exactly like Matt Smith. You cannot tell me 0:10 is not him speaking as Daemon.
0:19 that's so cute ❤😂
0:19
Messmer sounds so human in his surprise
I want him
I need him
I could love him
I could fix him
Please Messmer give me a chance
0:52 When the choir starts 🔥
Man the voice acting. When he realizes we're Tarnished. The pain in his voice
The way the snake looks at you and slowly backs away tells so much of Messmer's real character, it's unbelievable.
So badass the way he glare at us while holding his flame 🔥
Such a pretty face too, a pity he had to take his eye out in his 2nd phase
Pause at 0:23 and the Snakes eye looks the Greater Will black hole in space
Something about it, cutting to the snake eye and the first scene. Chills.
The pause in his speech between 1.00-1.10 with subtle music change gets me every time….as a musician AND as someone who appreciates the level of voice acting here it just gives me CHILLS ❤
‚,Soon tarnished wilt thou be taken in the jaws“ gave me goosebumps
Messmer has one of the best boss designs in the whole game.
These cutscenes are amazing and also what’s amazing too is we get to see what heavy flame really is in this cutscenes, it’s the abyssal serpent’s darkness infused with flame
Arguably the best cutscene in the entire game, along with Morgotts introduction in Leyndell. The voice acting in Elden Ring is truly godtier.
In the embrace of Messmer's Flame gave me Chills
“Mongrel Intruder”. I can’t believe Michael Zaki recreated “Ignorant Slaves” and still crushed it. I’m not sure I can forgive him for this.
The way he says mongrel intruder sounds like Shrimp from smiling friends
Top 3 boss cutscene for me🔥🔥
i'd let all of messmer's flames embrace me
"Mongrel Intruder" lives rent free in my head
Me too bro.
Arguably the best cut-scene
I feel like he was gonna say something else until he realized you were tarnished. He sounded genuinely hurt and betrayed.
his voice excites me 🥵
The amount of times that I have been summoned and heard Mongrel Intruder. I never get tired of hearing it
-You will witness true horror.
How? No way"
uh, you have grace, that's why he's pissed, he knows it was stripped from you, and he knows you have it back, this means Marika betrayed him.
@@keithfilibeck2390 yeah it's literally the reason we respawn
"The abyssal serpeant shawn of light" shawn does look kinda chill there tbf
His VA Played Griggs in DS1 and Hawkeye in DS3.
best cutscene from any souls game imo
The way he says “Wilt thou be taken in the jaws,” is so fucking good.
Godrick = Daddy issues
Messmer = Mommy issues
Both were fun to fight
Chadfrey: Wife Issues
Am i the only who finds messmer pet snake cute?
0:10 Oh, -Morgott- Margitt's gonna like you.
the fight is way to underrated, the intro is freakin badass. the voice and everything, messmer has me seduced i swear
"Messmer! Foe of my beloved people! In vengeance of the flames,my blade I wield!"
Evil Hornsent guy
Whether or not it was intentional, I’m totally the digging the Bowie-esque delivery of “mongrel intruder”.
It was such an amazing fight. The amount of evil in this is crazy
One of the best Villain openings I have ever heard.
I love how he is a bit baffled that a Tarnished invaded his castle and is challenging him. The wa he says "Thou’rt Tarnished, it seemeth" feels like he caught in surpise.
Those serpents are sooooo cute🥺
0:18 🥺🐍
This is probably the best boss introduction in the whole game.
FromSoftware stays finding *brazy* good voice actors man.
I love how the tarnished turns towards Messmer when it hears 'mongrel intruder' like 'b* who tf you talkin to'
I've personally always stuck to Marika being the gloam eyed queen/mother of truth, and the snakes shadow wrapping around the statue of Marika made me a true believer. Not far from a body that looks like marika and the o mother gesture at bonny village, is a big shed snake skin near pots used to mix beings
First time bumping into Messmer without knowing he was coming up was such a fun feeling.
Seeing that snake pop up made me say “Oh fuck, it’s you!”
