Love this song!! The lead singer James Hetfield grew up in a family that practiced Christian Science and had strict religious beliefs. His dad left when he was in his early teens and then his mom died from cancer after refusing treatment. His dad never came back for him so he was adopted by his sister. This song is about his troubled upbringing. I'm sure if I got any facts wrong someone will let me know. Great song pick and reaction!! 🙂
@Kristina Bushnell I'm not sure about the adopted by his sister part. I do know right after his mom died he went to live with his older brother for quite a while. Once James was around 17- 18 he was living with Ron Mcgovney Metallica's first bassist. Ron's parents owned a bunch of property with houses on them. The houses were going to be demolished because Ron's dad sold the property to the State. So while waiting for them to be torn down Ron and James built a practice/ apartment on one of the lots. Knowing the State would take their sweet time getting to demolishing the houses. Not trying to be a know it all just adding to your story.
@@jeremyboehm5512 thanks so much for the info. I had read that somewhere about his sister adopting him when he was like 17, but unless you see it in an interview you can't really be sure if it's true or not, lol.

If you read the meaning behind the song it will absolutely rip your heart out. Poor James didn't have nobody but his mom when his dad just randomly left and then was left completely broken once his mother died.

Man, I have been listening to Metallica for many years...and their music still pertains to the world's situation! I am almost 64 years old, and just find the older I get, the more I see the same old stuff happening over and over again, and those in charge keep making mistakes that have killed millions and millions of people for no reason at all...well expect for their lust for money & power!

James Hetfield(the singer) grew up with incredibly religious parents,so this song is about his battle trying to find his own identity from a small child,his difficult teen years,and a young adult.His father and him were constantly butting heads because of James' choice to be his own person and not conform to such strict standards on their religious views.

I waited in line at the record store to buy this in highschool, hits just as hard now as it did then.
Some people say, Hetfield is probably The Best metal songwriter, ever. I do agree. There is structure to his lyrics; almost biblical with a tinge of archaic melancholy in The Unforgiven. That's another level, honestly.

Hands down the best Metallica song ever is Disposable Heroes. It's an anti-war song.
I am happy to say that my 13 year old daughter will never have to make a video like this because she has already seen metallica in concert, twice.
For me..I get...from the day you are born, society puts you in a box, and through pressure tries to make you conform, turn you into someone/something that you are not, until you are bitter, and just don't care anymore. Then when you get old, you realize that you had the key to escape the whole time.
