I've honestly never played this game, but it's definitely on my list. I had Contra SS for the PS2 in mind. I remember how I used to be absolutely terrible, but now I can get through without ever getting touched. The enemies have set patterns and I usually know what they're going to do, but sometimes I get killed because something doesn't do what it normally does....so I guess in a way that it's just a bit more than sheer memorization.
@Akrilloth Butsutekkai means large flying mass, as I have heard from a person who speaks japanese. This is the theme of Butsutekkai, the first boss in Ikaruga.
@Tristin42 It's a must-have, and in my opinion Ikaruga is one of the absolute greatest sh'mups of all time - and that's coming from a guy that considers Gradius and R-Type two of the greatest franchises of the NES/SNES eras
ikaruga doesnt really change in difficult from "easy" to "hard" infact i find hard mode easier than easy since u get more bullets to absorb and shoot back. touhou has slower bullets and recent ones show u the hitbox. imo touhou is more difficult since i have yet to beat a touhou game on normal while i have managed to beat ikaruga on hard mode.
@Akrilloth The message it displays before boss figthts. "WARNING: The big enemy is approaching at full throttle. According to the data, it is identified as Butsutekkai. NO REFUGE" Apparently I hadn't realized it was classed as Butsutekkai. Confusing.
Dracula, it all depends on whether he uses the homing fruit attack. However, I found it a lot easier when I used the slow-mo version and had 4 youtube videos up at the same time =D
To be fair, the fight it's used in for IWBTG is pretty epic in its own right. That it includes the blatant reference to the original game is pretty good, too.
That's what mostly all top down and side scroller shooters are. Occasionally enemies do something you don't expect and that is what separates the sxilled players from t3h ones who simply memorized the patterns.
I thought IWBTG had pretty good level design, aside from the trial and error of course. Almost every room has a unique obstacle or mechanic, and many bosses are not based on trial and error (Bowser and Mike Tyson are the two exceptions).
ffffuuu- this track is so epic! I wanted to download it right when I heard it for the first time. now the file is unavailabe on khinsider :'( could you fix that for us? pretty please? :P
i mean the first time i played i got all the way to the 4th lvl so i dont know if it has anything to do with skill but everytime i played i kept getting better. the only thing i have trouble with now is the turning satillite thing on the 4th lvl i can almost get through without dying
I need a fucking GameCube NOW!! Idk how or where the fuck it came from but I found the GameCube version of ikaruga on my bed or a wii I played the demo boss battle online and it was fucking fun as all hell. It wasn't hard like I thought it would be maybe I should play the full game besides just the boss battle on the computer
The first time i played this game i'd just come off a Touho game so i was like :NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! AGAIN!? Then I meet the 1st boss and his epic theme
Atually, the homing fruit attack is nearly impossible to avoid when you have the ectoplasm and one of his random attacks also coming at you at the same time.
Very fitting music, considering the first boss looks like a knight. When I first played this game, I was like, "8D OMG this boss music fucking rocks." And then I got to the second boss and "Recapture" played. I said, "
this game is just a matter of repitition. like when you first play you will get utterly destroyed but as you keep playing more and memorizing it, it becomes much easier. i can do the 1-3 missions without dying thats after plenty of times playing it
@nyvelion If you were sarcastic, just ignore. if not: "I wanna be the guy", possibly the hardest platformer out there. Download, play, shit brix, leave. (I've completed it, though =3)
*just bought the game* TIME TO KICK SOME ASS! *1 level later* WHAT THE FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-*ship blown up for the third time* MOTHER FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU *mom* CALM DOWN! happened to me the first day i got it XD
MECHA BIRDO GODDAMN YOU
But the kid uses the gun
Best IWBTG boss music vs Mecha Birdo.
Damn, I love how hard hitting the introduction of this song is. It's like the moment that first note hits, shit gets REAL!
Still sends shivers down my spine each time. The music always picks up when the dude brings out his shield barrage
First in MUGEN, then IWBTG.
I gotta play Ikaruga asap, this theme is stuck in my brain, I WANT MORE EPIC THEMES LIKE THIS!
One of the greatest video game themes ever. Period. Don't argue with me.
One of the most original and fantastic games I've ever played, plus the music is awesome.

I dont find it sad, its a good thing. Shines light on it and gets people to go back and enjoy what they otherwise may have missed entirely.
VS MECHA BIRDO!
Reminds me of Hitoshi Sakimoto's overly-dramatic and EPIC music style (Final Fantasy Tactics, FFXII, Gradius V)!
I understand the pain, because they could go and comment on the IWBTG music - Mecha-Birdo in the related videos.
I see I'm not the only person that came here after hearing it from a I Wanna be the Guy playthrough.
nope
@Tristin42 It's a must-have, and in my opinion Ikaruga is one of the absolute greatest sh'mups of all time - and that's coming from a guy that considers Gradius and R-Type two of the greatest franchises of the NES/SNES eras
It's an independent game that is notorious for its difficutly. During one of the boss fights named Mecha Birdo, this song plays.
what's so wrong with playing the Xbox Live Arcade version? isn't it good that more people get to enjoy the game without having a dreamcast?

I'm absolutely horrible at this game, but every now and then I go for a run on it on xbox live and I always love playing it
Best Boss soundtrack ever! What a genius shmup!
this one has the best quality of all in youtube
My new ringtone. I love this song soooo much!
I play it on my Gamecube all the time, this game is TOO addicting!
Judging from all the IWBTG comments, a hell of a lot of people need to play Ikaruga.
It may or may not still be on XBLA, download it now!
This tune is for Ikaruga..and for Ikaruga alone! :)
I wish I had played Ikaruga. Sounds like an awesome game. I at least know for sure that the music is really good.
DARK ARC ANGEL THEME FROM M.U.G.E.N
Dracula, it all depends on whether he uses the homing fruit attack. However, I found it a lot easier when I used the slow-mo version and had 4 youtube videos up at the same time =D
To be fair, the fight it's used in for IWBTG is pretty epic in its own right. That it includes the blatant reference to the original game is pretty good, too.
@misterchief92 I wouldn't call one more memorable than the other. Sure, Ikaruga is more original, but IWBTG had one hell of a sense of humor.
at the very beginning of this song, that first note, it pretty much tells you that YOUR SCREWED!
That's what mostly all top down and side scroller shooters are. Occasionally enemies do something you don't expect and that is what separates the sxilled players from t3h ones who simply memorized the patterns.
@nyvelion I Wanna Be The Guy; it's a fan-game in which this song played while you fought Mecha-Birdo
I however LOVE THIS GAME! (difficulty)
really epic theme
So true.
I thought IWBTG had pretty good level design, aside from the trial and error of course. Almost every room has a unique obstacle or mechanic, and many bosses are not based on trial and error (Bowser and Mike Tyson are the two exceptions).
This song is so epic
@kaldrasshield that makes sense, but the bosses name is Eboshidori. thx for the answer anyway, BUTSUTEKKAI!!! heh, i love that word.
I named my Yoshi amiibo MechaBirdo, Does that count?
Father The Guy probably.
YES!
This song is now my ringtone.
My grandfather died last night and I had this theme stuck in my head when I went up to see his dead body, needless to say I felt tense. :
@todbot1 Well, this game is on Dreamcast, xbox360 and gamecube.. Why not download a dreamcast emulator and the roms?
My ringtone for years
@DreamDevourer1 Nah, I hate playing with a keyboard and I don't really feel like doing all the ISO stuff, my computer is almost out of memory anyways.
Epic...
This music is epic.
I feel bad for this song and Ikaruga. It's a great song, and whenever most people here it, they think its from i wanna be the guy.
Sorry for double posts, but I mean I never looked at it for the other bosses. I just assume it's the same message, now.
Does Butsutekkai!! mean boss theme? or what does it mean. i mean this is my favorite music to listen to when i draw mecha or robots,
The codename for the game (before) was: "ProjectRS2" a.k.a. Ikaruga
RESIDENT SEEEEVILL
TWO
true i the only enemies i expect no set pattern from ar the bosses and the mini bosses. all the smaller enemies are usually predictable
@RipYourSpineOut DAMN RIGHT!
im here for iwbtg :D
ffffuuu- this track is so epic! I wanted to download it right when I heard it for the first time. now the file is unavailabe on khinsider :'(
could you fix that for us? pretty please? :P
@superdragon4ever When was actually "I wanna be the guy" showed?I know when Ikaruga showed up. 2001 on Dreamcast and early.
GAME OVER: PRESS R TO TRY AGAIN
Hmmm, finals are coming up. I need this playing in the background and that would be awesome. DIE AP CHEM FINAL DIE!!!
i mean the first time i played i got all the way to the 4th lvl so i dont know if it has anything to do with skill but everytime i played i kept getting better. the only thing i have trouble with now is the turning satillite thing on the 4th lvl i can almost get through without dying
Is there a band arrangement for this
i cam here for ikaruga and iwbtg, so haters can't hate!!!
@64supermarioreturns You can play it on emulator
I need a fucking GameCube NOW!! Idk how or where the fuck it came from but I found the GameCube version of ikaruga on my bed or a wii I played the demo boss battle online and it was fucking fun as all hell. It wasn't hard like I thought it would be maybe I should play the full game besides just the boss battle on the computer
i feel beast whenever i play this game on hard.
Yeah...
The first time i played this game i'd just come off a Touho game so i was like :NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! AGAIN!?
Then I meet the 1st boss and his epic theme
@PanzerousDragoon It stands for I Wanna Be The Guy.
Obligatory Mecha Birdo Comment
Why does this song keep getting better every time I hear it? OH, THAT'S RIGHT, BECAUSE EVERYTHING ABOUT IKARUGA IS SHEER AND UTTER WIN!!!!!
IWBTG is short for I Wanna Be The Guy, a game designed to be hard to play.
I said, "
cant resist saying this......SURPRISE BUTSUTEKKAI!! *facepalm*
¿Who cares if they know it from IWBTG or from Ikaruga? This song is still awesome.
@PanzerousDragoon I wanna be the guy. Its a downloadable game for the PC (I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT BECAUSE IT IS HARDER THAN A DIAMOND)
Yes, but this game is very difficult too and as good as IWBTG. For me, these games are equal...for me.
this game is just a matter of repitition. like when you first play you will get utterly destroyed but as you keep playing more and memorizing it, it becomes much easier. i can do the 1-3 missions without dying thats after plenty of times playing it
I wish I had a working Gamecube to play this again :(
@stickpunk1 True.. but Ikaruga uses the music for an more awesome boss >:3
Besides, it's very likely that many people, after listening to it, tried this game.
Dammit this isn't on spotify
Warning! The large enemy is approaching at full throttle. Sources say it is identified as 'mecha birdo' NO REFUSE
@misterchief92 It's not as easily accessible though :(
Praise IWBTG then! made this song famous again :D
I'll put this on bfdi mugen
>fourth boss
>my face
@nyvelion If you were sarcastic, just ignore.
if not:
"I wanna be the guy", possibly the hardest platformer out there. Download, play, shit brix, leave. (I've completed it, though =3)
*just bought the game* TIME TO KICK SOME ASS!
*1 level later*
WHAT THE FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-*ship blown up for the third time* MOTHER FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
*mom* CALM DOWN!
happened to me the first day i got it XD
someone should make a 8-bit remix to this theme :D
I found this music through I Wanna Be The Guy, so I kind of feel bad. Maybe I'll play this game to make up for it.
WWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYY!?
Dude. Ikaruga is a sequel. So technically, Ikaruga IS Ikaruga 2.
Goddamn, why isn't this game on PSN?
Xbox Live it is!
whats iwbtg? :
It's a game...
It's whole name I wanna be the guy...
i beat IWBTG...hard...MB is still my fav tho
You know, there's more comments relating to I wanna be the Guy than Ikaruga. Kind of weird...
Known for the I wanna be the guy boss fight.
I still remember fighting this guy. His third phase was always one to kill me.
It's sad that more people know this song from IWBTG then from the actual game.
I Wanna Be The Guy, Mecha Birdo Boss Theme
