It's impossible for me to listen to this without shedding a tear at the very least. This song is the absolute embodiement of Ikaruga's main philosophy for me.
I can hear it: This song is a clash of two beings. One damn near metaphysical to the other being of indomitable ambition. I mean by the time reaches it climax, Ideal is already playing but at the same time, godly tones that backed up the Stone Like in Radiant Silvergun is trying to come out itself.
Also, although Shinra's appearance might look like something you see in a nightmare, His actions and personality are a dream come true. Too bad he had to sacrifice himself....
I was wondering why this track reminded me so much of Gunstar Heroes. It's from Treasure. Best track in the game. Ikaruga is such an obscure gem. Hard, satisfying and epic.
Other than mother 3 and shadow of the collusus, ikaruga is the only game that actually legitimately made me cry. The song is a pure masterpiece, btw.....

One thing I really like about this theme compared to so many other final boss themes out there is that instead of getting more intense, the track slows down to serve its thematic purpose and to let the player focus on the fight.
Ikarauga is about the will of one man that is so strong he single handedly (well with the help of one lady) takes down an entire army that has conquered the cosmos. And by the gods does the game's challenge feel like he really is managing to do the impossible and wipe out the entire enemy on his own.
This song makes me feel as though I'm really feeling the final confrontation with the boos of a game. And it leaves me with a sense of satisfaction. :3
this music for me feels like the boss is about to show his ugly divine wings in white and black to eliminate your wishes for the far awaited peaceful future ^_^ and ikaruga's destiny was to be killed in this battle to save the world's future ^_^

In the far future (years 2500's) people discovered an ancient artifact from the prehistoric stratum (along with the debris of a robot similar to the ones they got in the current era), it activates (thus erasing almost all of humanity on Earth except a small group on a spaceship), the remaining squad goes back to Earth because their ressources start depleting but they are attacked by the machines controlled by the artifact in question (it's sentient), small flashback from when the artifact is activating and the alert is going on, the commander asks you to escape as fast as possible, back to present, you escape again from the artifact but end up having one of the crew mate sacrificing himself. You fight the artifact under several form until it sends you millennia into the past, you defeat but the two remaining people, a man and a woman are dead but the robot is making clones thus creating an everlasting cycle that would soon get stopped by Shinra in Ikaruga.
As for Ikaruga the nation of Ourai found the Stone Like and used it as a weapon to conquer other countries. The pilot of the Ikaruga, Shinra, got shot down and ended in the village of Ikaruga where lies the eponymous ship with the unique ability of switching polarities (along with Kagari, Ginkei's pilot, that tried to kill Shinra because she was paid to do but got betrayed by Ourai). Then the two are in a journey of revenge (which is a süicide mission btw).

Sad, but true. What else could you expect from a game made by Treasure?
