This week I’m back to working on my original project Little by Little, my 359 Peterbilt project that started this channel back in 2017. All that’s remaining on this truck is the bodywork and paint so picking up where I left off in episode 76, I continue working down the multiple layers of paint that has been put on this truck over the decades of its life. I also give an update on what I’m planning to work on over the winter.
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and support!
Keep in mind, I know a little about a lot but not an expert in anything … just doing the best I can, learning as I go ... I do all my own stunts
Enjoy watching the progress of this ongoing Peterbilt 359 restoration the Kenworth W900A Smokey and the Bandit tribute project and associated TransAm and the #IronDuke Kenworth K100 cabover I’m planning to build up like the one used in the 70’s trucking movie High Ballin’ with Jerry Reed and Peter Fonda.
Subscribe for notifications for future episodes that I do my best to upload new videos weekly on Thursdays
Note that for some reason RUclips set my channel as made for kids awhile back so if you haven’t been getting notifications, just unsubscribe, re-subscribe and hit the bell to ensure you never miss an episode!

You have to put a few coats of paint stripper. Do it in sections, like side of sleeper, door, hood. Not the whole truck at a time. put coat on 10 min later another coat then another coat. You'll see it lift all the paint off. Then move to next section. If it dries it won't come off. Also you should use a scraper . Not the whole truck at a time.

In the aerospace industry, we use a product called “Talstrip II”. It works very well on modern 2 part epoxies, 2 two polyurethanes and moderately well on old single stage enamels. Old single stage enamels suffer from loss of the binder due to UV and exposure over the years, and all that’s left is the pigmenting agents, which are resistant to any chemical remover. Having said that, Talstrip II, applied in a thick coat with a roller, then covered in light plastic film for 24 hours to prevent drying, works well on most coatings. Stubborn areas will require two or more applications, but will generally get it done. The key is to apply it thick-ish, and do not “work it” with brushes or other mechanical means. Let it lift the coating off, and use a plastic brush to scrape off the emulsified coating after set time. Clean up residue with a pressure washer. It’s not perfect, but if used correctly, it will save you hours of sanding, especially around rivet/huck bolt heads.

Congrats Mr and Mrs Twinsticks on the win at Lesco, well deserved! Instead of a tarp for the trailer, have you considered extending the roofline of the workshop and even making the front or back or both rooflines with a slightly longer overhang to cover the whole trailer, as you seem to have adequate height? Eventually you could enclose the rear and side walls for full protection. Not a quick job, but as another loyal follower suggested, maybe shrink-wrap for the short-term possibly with a barrier material to absorb any moisture during the winter to protect that beautiful wrap. Happy stripping! 😜👍👍👍👍

A long time ago when I worked at an old power tool referb shop. when we were using paint stripper we would apply the stipper then cover with a plastic sheet and got some very strong effects that way. An old timer told us, that the stripper would boil off into the air, and the sheet kept the stripper from boiling off and more time eating into the paint.

This episode takes me back to my childhood…Dad got this wild idea he should have an old B model Mack to add to the fleet of R’s we had at the time. So tracked one down that was running and driving but had a poorly attached sleeper where they’d chopped the ornate back window out with an air saw. Long story shorter, my job was to help remove the layers upon layers of old school, what I can assume, lacquer paint. I hate sanding to this day lol.

Hi, on the Aircraft Stripper, they made environmental safe. So, it is a lot weaker. And it used to say in the instructions that it worked better if you applied it wit a paint brush in one direction. I would only put the brush on and pull it back towards me. And laid it on thick. I did a 359 Pete that had 9 coats of primer and paint. So, I know how you feel.😝🤪

Glad to see you saving your lungs with a respirator, Mark. I painted a truck in a shop with poor ventilation, while it was -35 outside, so I didn't open the doors enough, and I glued my lungs shut, had chemical Pneumonia for two months, and lost 2/3 of my lung capacity. It was scary! Took a lot of learning to be able to exert myself again. Like I say, beware!

With the paint stripper your right. They are not as good as they used to be.
Keeping the stripper wet is the biggest thing to get it to work. What I have done in the past is put on the stripper in a 12x12 inch patch then put cling wrap/ plastic sheet over it to stop it drying out. Then it works for longer and it makes clean up easier as most of the paint will stick to the plastic sheet

Get to your local hardware store and get you some rubber gauntlets and buy a scraper while you are there and use the scraper just after you wait 15-30 minutes and watch that bubbling paint just run up over your protected fingers ; it's actually satisfying 😊!! Then you clean the metal with soap and water or simple green and then hose that off !! Be sure to have a 5 gallon bucket ( old latex paint container for the runny chemically softened chips) it should only be hard around bolt heads just like the Rivetheads on aircraft!! IF you can't do this like I just suggested then Canada is completely on the TREESAVING TRAIN and you are SOL! Sorry you are having trouble with Lil' by little !! Great video BTW !!
