Greenhouse Cleanup - Finally dealing with the mess

  • After a teaser of snow we knew it was about time we start dealing with the mess of our property that happened over the summer. Our house is built and we have a good amount of firewood gathered so we have the time to start dealing with it.
Although not fun, cleaning this mess has been needed to be done for a long time. We are not sure how well supporting the greenhouse will keep it from collapsing over winter. Getting out and cleaning it off is going to be a top priority after each snow.

Don't be so hard on yourselves Cody, you put it in there to protect and had to use some of the things which leaves it scattered a bit. You have been busting your backs to get into the cabin by winter, and you did it, so don't beat yourselves up for not being super man and super woman! One step at a time!

Suggestion: Strip the top of the logs and any branches still near the plastic. They notch to top of each log to seat the metal poles in

I dont think anybody here thought the mess was from not being orginized. We all know you had to get the house built before winter and messes are part of no time. Now ya got it picked up so now you will know were things are and wont have to look for it come full blown winter! Keep up the good work. Im loving the channel!

Completing those "small tasks" every day will get you where you need to be. Try not to be so hard on yourselves, as you completed a small miracle just getting a warm roof over your heads for winter. Priority on getting things under cover before the snow falls and hides it from you. Organization can happen a bit later. Really enjoying your journey, and cheering for your successes!

Cody if the log prop slips off the pipe you will have a problem. You need to notch the log or drill a hole and put a cable tie through it so it will not slip. Just a suggestion.

With any additional treetop poles you could make a bushcraft post and beam structure as a woodshed and use your slab wood for siding/roofing the air gaps in the slab wood would actually help the firewood dry. It seems the more remote/self reliant you are, the more stuff you need and the more you recycle.

When anyone moves there’s always “stuff” extra. Living off grid you need to keep stuff for future projects. the greenhouse is definitely more organized. Good job! It can be overwhelming. Being organized saves so much time and energy, no more hunting for stuff.

I agree with notching or flattening those logs in the greenhouse you might even throw a couple loops of string around them to hold them in place is one good wind and they're all going to be punched right through your plastic and that would be a disaster. I agree with just watching the top a little bit just a quick V and throw a loop of nylon cord around it and you are good. Keep up the great work you guys you're an awesome inspiration.

Put some time of rubber over the tops of the posts in your greenhouse to protect the plastic. You could cut up some of the pieces from the stuff you milled, they would work for the wood stove. Good luck and got this.

Excellent video. What a clean up guys. A pity the camper van can’t be used as storage space. Maybe put a tarp over it during winter? Plastic storage tubs are good to keep stuff in while the cabin is being finished. But store them in the high tunnel. I wouldn’t store anything in the cabin, it’ll only be clutter, especially if your winter project is to finish the interior of the cabin. Your channel really shows us viewers, who sit in the comfort of our living rooms, how difficult off grid life is if we want to be self sufficient and mortgage free. Thanks for sharing, Cody, Lori & Irie. Australian fan.

A supplement called L-lysine would help tremendously. When you get mouth sores or fever blisters, it can be caused by a lack of this amino acid in your diet. L-lysine is one of the few supplements proven to work. It helps your skin heal itself. It’s cheap, and I would send you some if I had your address. It’s not a miracle, but it does help.

Whelp, I'll be watching your channel some more this winter. I understand your desire to utilize the greenhouse, however, this is one where you are about to gain some cheechako wisdom on the way to sourdough status.
The poly is going to get shreded this winter no mater what you prop the frame with. That greenhouse was never intended or designed for the winter conditions of Alaska. In -10 or -20f that poly is going to break and tear under any kind of load from the snow. Not to mention the winds we get in the winter. It's just not going to work. I know it sucks having to move that stuff to a more protected location but imagine having to do it in -10f and 4ft of snow.
I guess we will see, it will be entertainment anyways.
