Hey Chod, Ken here. On Saturday, I turn 60. I am scared that I lived this long, but it's better than the alternative.
Video Killed the Radio Star was a transformative song.
At 60, I remember when FM radio first came out. People thought it would kill AM radio. AM radio was where folks got their news from. Then, television and Walter Cronkite became folks news source.
As I kid I remember hearing music on 78 albums, then 33rpm and singles were 45rpms. These were transformations and then in the early 80's music came out on CD's.
In the mid 60's songs were released Mono - and then along came stereo. Transformation.
Life is transformation. Video Killed the Radio Star was the first music video played on MTV. It was the end of music as we knew it. The great Rock bands of the 60's and 70's, Steely Dan, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Pink Floyd would all be set aside for visual artists like Madonna, Michael Jackson, the Police and U2.
But all good things come to an end. Music videos lasted 15 years and music transformed into urban music and America's Got Talent. And now....Reaction videos allow us folks watch people be introduced to music we have known and loved.

Another nearly-60-year-old here and I went through all those musical media as well. I'm going to add in 8-track tapes because I had a portable player back then, too. I've been obsessed with reaction videos for several years now and I'm thrilled to find folks like Chod and watch them discover so much music that is new to them and being able to add tidbits and ephemera for them to flesh out the experience. Like you, I have to thank Chod because seeing his eyes light up while listening and then hearing his analysis is truly special!
I watched a reaction video with teenage girl and it was fascinating to see her as confused by technology like reel to reel as someone living in the jungles of New Guinea would be.

Interesting fact : This was the very first song played on MTV IN 1981 despite the fact it had been out a few years.
If you listen closely to the lyrics this song was very prophetic on the huge impact music videos would have on record sales.

I've never seen Empire Records but I have the soundtrack. This song might have been in the movie but it's not on the soundtrack.
Yeah it's pretty much the song the whole movie revolves around for the Rex Manning signing held at the store.

FYI, Trevor Horn, the vocalist, was one of the vocalist of the progessif-rock band Yes! In the album "Drama"
I hated this song and was deeply shocked when Trevor Horn joined Yes (along with Geoff Downes). I wouldn't listen to the Drama album for a long tome...I finally did, the music is good but I hate Trevor Horn's voice!
Trevor also produced Drama & YES's 90125 helped write Yes 's Fly From here back in 1980 left off Drama and produced it in 2011. Jeff Downes is the current keyboard player for YES.
"Tempus Fugit" was the song from that Yes album that got the most rock radio airplay back then.
This record came out when I was 10 years old & so cheesey but it's great & made me smile throughout 🎶❤️
Anyone of "a certain age" knows this was the first song played on MTV in August 1980. The video on MTV was more of a studio effort, different but quite good.
The bassist/vocalist, Trevor Horn, went on to have a very successful career as a producer. He was also a member of Yes for a while.
Keyboardist Geoffrey Downes was also a member of Yes.
TREVOR HORN also produced SEAL and he thought "Kiss From A Rose" would never make it until Trevor heard it and made it a Hit!

One band you need to listen to, on name alone, is Oingo Boingo. But Danny Elfman was also a masterful composer. The horns and percussion offered so much energy, but so did the stage show. I'd recommend No One Lives Forever from their Farewell tour. The sound is so unique and fun.

- "Video Killed The Radio Star" was the first song that MTV (music broadcaster, groundbreaking at the time) aired.
- The singer Trevor Horn was the singer on the Yes albums "Drama" and "Fly From Here (Return Trip)" and also worked as a producer for Yes.
- The keyboardist Geoff Downes also played the keyboards on "Drama" and has been the Yes keyboardist since then (until today) with interruptions

Trevor Horn - was one of the pre-eminent 80s producers, who masterminded Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Propaganda etc. Very distinctive 80s production style which I love

This song was my intro to the Buggles but I heard the first two and i guess, only, albums, not long after their releases because of college radio in New Orleans.
I would suggest I Am a Camera from their second album, Adventures in Modern Recording and then listen to the cut, Into the Lens from the album Drama by Yes. The singer/bass player Trevor Horn and keyboard player Geoff Downes from the Buggles were recruited by several Yes members after their lead singer, Jon Anderon, walked away for a while.
It's cool how an already great song can easily take a stylistic change.

Trevor Horns' Prince's Trust concert 2004 is a must see. The Buggles, Art of Noise, Grace Jones, Seal, Yes and more, all in this concert.
Trevor Horn ended up singing all of Fly From Here-Return Trip so he sings lead on 2 official Yes albums and produced 3.
Catchy song very much attached to a very certain time. I can't hear the Queen song "Radio GaGa" without this song barging itself into my mind. The Queen song came out a few years after this song.
TREVOR HORN has a Incredible ear for Music! As a Producer on one of SEAL's Albums Seal thought a Song he had written was "too mushy & corny" for radio & was a throwaway song until Trevor heard it and told SEAL it was a "Hit" . That Song was "Kiss From A Rose" !
I am a Camera is a great tune they do and they do on the Yes album Drama also. It is called Into the Lense on the Yes version.

Aw, the ending cut out early, which has one of my most favorite parts of the song (you can hear it in the original video). Anyway, the Buggles played this song live for the first time decades later. You def should check it out on your own later. Look for " All the original members are there (plus a few more) and the added coda is transcendent.
That command performance in 2004 was amazing and really showed what a well engineered and frankly orchestral song this is.

If there’s any reason to sign this song it’s the fact it’s a part of music history as it kicked off music video on MTV. The reach of a wider audience of symphonic music, new wave, techno on the wave of the 2nd British Invasion. Anyone born in the mid 1960s experienced this as an 80s kid. The lyrics are most profound and ironic for any decade
First done by the band "Bruce Whooley and the Camera club" in 1979. Also, the lead singer and the keys player went on to play with YES on the album "Drama". The thing about the camera club is they were ahead of their time. If you look it up, their image etc is so 80's. Also, a great factoid, they had Thomas Dolby on keys.
Don't know why, but this song always reminds me of M and, 'pop muzik.' Probably because they came out at roughly the same time. The late 70's and early 80's was a transitional period that offered some really interesting, innovative songs.

Reportedly this was the first video played on MTV. However, the first version I heard was Bruce Wooley and the Camera Club. As others pointed out here Trevor Horn was behind this. He went on to be a top producer, producing the likes of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Seal. He also worked with YES. That's some pretty stellar associations! '80s music (strictly speaking I think this was released in the late '70s, but it helped set the tone in that case) is its own Thing, really. It can get ridiculous, but it's a lot of fun.

If you watch the performance from 2004 you'll find that he can still nail this song.
The primary value of this song is the lyrics - it came out just as MTV was hitting the airwaves. The core of the Buggles were Trevor Horn (vocals, bass) and Geoff Downes (keyboards). Shortly after this album was released, Horn and Downs joined Yes for a single album - "Drama". Downes was replacing Rick Wakeman - a tough act to follow, while Horn was replacing Jon Anderson - again, not an easy pair of shoes to fill. Despite that, Drama is actually a good album, even though many Yes "purists" pooh-pooh it.
Definitely gotta follow this up with a song or two from "Drama" - "Tempus Fugit" was the more radio-friendly song, while "Machine Messiah" was a more classic Yes-styled epic-length piece.
As other people have noted, this is the very first video played on MTV when it hit the airwaves in 1980. Believe it or not, before then, we didnt have any music videos even though you now see clips of bands performing on TV or in concert or perhaps like the Monkees or Paul Revere and the Raiders or The Patridge Family where you had TV clips of their songs. However, I do believe in the UK they did have some music videos which is why the MTV era was the second British invasion. UK bands had videos that were ready for MTV while US bands did not have any videos because there was no where to play them.

I think you would love a forgotten hit by TUBEWAY ARMY...ARE FRIENDS ELECTRIC. seriously this was big and different.
A lot of bands when TV lip syncing did it half-heartedly or even make it obvious they were faking it. If you notice the female singers are doing things in the background like they're distracted or bored. So it didn't matter to them if there were revealing giveaways as they respected the audience's intelligence.
The blonde is not one of the original singers but The brunette is and she is the one who sang the female solo on the record.

This is the only song I know of theirs that was a hit in the US. I haven't seen this video you reacted to, but I have seen the official video to this song, which others have mentioned was the first music video MTV Played. Original song was this one. Everyone else copied. It is not a chick song it was a number one smash hit. It was written around the time of MTV who were one of the first channels to have music videos on it. The song is about this time in history. Your welcome.
The original recording was by Bruce Wooley and the Camera Club. He co-wrote the song with Horn and Downes. The Buggles released the hit version not long after.

They all wrote "Video Killed the Radio Star" So the song was originally a Buggles song but never offically released until 1979. The Buggles did perform it without releasing it in 1978. The song was sung and released by only by one member Bruce Woolley just like the The Righteous Brothers where Hatfield sang Unchained Melody but both were latter credited with the song. Prince wrote and sang nothing compares to you before Sinead O'connor but never released the song offically she did and it was a hit. Just like Elton gives Bernnie Taupin credit for his songs. They were purposely mocking the video clips where bands would obviously be miming. The Beatles did that a lot in some of their clips…

Replaced, not killed. Radio didn't go anywhere. Overly dramatic, right? But I guess would anyone listen to song called "Video Replaced the Radio Star"? Probably not.
Yes, and now production Value and special-effects are more important Than musical ability. You don’t even need musicians anymore or a good voice because of technology
