Synth player for the Buggles was Hans Zimmer, yes that Hans Zimmer!
Nope, it was Geoff Downes who went on to join Asia.
I rate this as one of the best pop songs ever
Love this Song since 1979.
I've always thought of this song as a forerunner to Queen's Radio Gaga. They both seem to lament the loss of the radio
as the primary source of home entertainment in the THEN new video age.
Audio killed the silent screen star!
Both Trevor Horn and Geoffrey Downes were in the band YES and recorded the Drama album. Horn was the singer when Jon Anderson left the band. Cool review and please stay safe to you both and to all your subscribers 😷
Bruce Woolly was the guitarist in the Buggles, he did not have an earlier version
the first video on MTV
Cool unique song . Great Reaction .
The lyrics didn't age well, but the song did. Still played regularly in Australia.
Queen and The Buggles were kindred spirits from days gone by. Both groups were British. But yes the British Invasion from the 60's was just the seed that was planted. Bring it! I was a teen back then and never let it go...
One of those songs you just have to join in the chorus...fab.
I love irony. Video DID kill the radio star. but there's no longer a Supreme video channel. Radio still lives.
When the Disco Music died and born the New Wave. Beautiful transition.
I don't believe this song would have been nearly as popular if it were not for MTV, it is cute.
I also heard an updated version called Internet killed the video star. :)
Yes I remember how thoughtful this song was. VHS came out in 1979 opening up a world of possibilities. Before that the emphasis was on radio for music and much more. Today, despite all our video platforms, Radio still has a charm and a great function - something that serves as a companion yet does not interrupt your day or your work. Listening is still a great joy.
Hopefully everything's alright for you in Mumbai. Greetings from England!
"Very important video for that generation". Oh yes, spot on. August 1981.
Watched this August 1981 at college dorm tv room as MTV hit the air
Great reaction guys! This was actually the first video to be shown on MTV and they thought that MTV would kill the radio. That music videos would make listening to music obsolete. It didn't (of course) lol 😊
MTV ended up killing MTV.
A definite flag from when i was growing up, far as i know their only other hit was living in the plastic age.
She nailed the problem with the loudness wars right in the beginning. Unfortunately modern music is compressed and limited to be super loud and she intuitively understands that this song is easier to listen to and has great dynamics which it most certainly does. I would love for artists to stop encouraging their mastering engineers to make their mixes so loud with look ahead brickwall limiting. That process adds distortion and takes away depth and separation of elements and creates listener fatigue.
Funfact. They played it only one time Live.
An old Hollywood expression: "Talkies killed the movies"... Meaning: when sound was introduced into motion pictures back in the late1920s, it flipped the movie industry on it's head. It seems to be nostalgic, but I can see the point.
Things had been going good to that point, then everything changed. Who knew what would come next?
I've always thought this song was a reflection of that era as well as the flipover from radio to MTV.
Perhaps deeper meaning as well. peace... Namatse
Gta vice city soundtrack
The end of an era and the beginning of another!
First heard this in GTA Vice City
Check out YES album Drama
No. The Video for this WAS the first to show on MTV. Do not accept less!
And now, podcast killed the videostar.
How about recation videos killing old songs! HAHA
