Subaru promised that he would stay by her side after she had lost Puck. But once she woke up, he wasn’t there. He had other things to attend to. And Emilia was dealing with an overwhelming amount of memories coming back to her.

I love how in the first season when Subaru fought with Emilia he only saw his own reflection through Emilia's eye, but know his eyes only see Emilia. This shows that now he isn't thinking about himself and he truly care about Emilia.

Author's twitter comments on Season 2, Episode 15
    Nagatsuki-sensei's tweets for this episode.
    Rough translation:
Alright! A week has passed, and it's time for Re: Zero ! Last time, the situation started with Otto and ended with Otto; what will the content be this time!? Otto dies! Nah, let's see the results first! Please enjoy this week, too!
And with that, this week starts with Otto as well!
You can say that he forecast that "I probably won't be killed.", and you could also say he was reading his opponent's opening moves. He was prepared to take a shot to the gut, but on the other hand, that was preparation for taking a valuable stone from his neck.
Incidentally, about the pit trap, not only did Otto dig at it himself, he likely also asked the bugs to help. It depends on what he offers in return, but he's able to get quite a bit of help. Also, Otto's speciality is earth magic.
Otto's hometown is a city called Piktat in the south of Lugunica. It's one of the bigger cities in Lugunica, and has a bit of an Arabian flair. A background song with that style was used, too.
Otto is the middle child of three brothers, and has good parents, so for one who has the "Blessing of the Soul of Language", it was a very fortunate environment. Most people who have the "Blessing of the Soul of Language" are unable to endure the hell of being trapped in the countless voices that surround them, and die before reaching adulthood. Aside from Otto, only one person in history has managed to develop normally.
Further, as a result of this, Otto's younger brother Regin holds a strong feeling of guilt towards his older brother. As a result of many different efforts to try and become able to speak with animals, he wasn't able to hear them, but in the end, he'll become a veterinarian.
"Hide the power of your blessing." is sensible advice from big brother Oslo, and the normal way of thinking for those with blessings. It's easy to become ostrasized when you're different from other people. Of course, there's people like Reinhard with no way to hide it...
The cute white girl that showed up partway through was Otto's first love. Otto, who sees no difference between conversations with people or animals, chose a white cat as his first love. Just as you can see, he only looked and never did anything, so she was carried off by a handsome cat.
Being unlucky is just business as usual for Otto by now, but his chance encounter with Petelgeuse was probably the worst of it.
It's been a while since Ricardo has had a chance to appear; this is a hidden event that occurred during the correct route of arc three. After being captured by Petelgeuse, it developed that Otto was saved during the 'Sloth' finger hunting that was part of Subaru's strategy.
Mimi and Tivey standing behind Otto with ropes is the answer to how he ended up being carried around tied to a pole. Due to Ricardo's lack of communication with his underlings, he ended up being captured again as a suspicious individual.
Hey hey, having the OP running during his actions makes him look like a main character, doesn't it......
In arc three, it did also happen that Otto pushed Subaru off the cart to get away from the White Whale, but at that point in time, he was simply a client, and on top of that, Otto was terribly confused by the White Whale's voice. Now he's indebted to Subaru, and knows him as a friend. Relationships change as the situation changes; that's looping.
Incidentally, he's using the red magic stones freely, but that's a part of Otto's self-defense strategy in case of emergency. But, I think they're probably pretty expensive. It's difficult to think that he'd be stingy with this sort of investment.
    Ram joins the battle!
The background music for Ram's appearance really has a boss music style. In truth, with the conditions set up properly, Ram is in the strongest class in the story, so it wouldn't be strange for her to have music like the White Whale did.
"A man who simply has good timing" is the simplest form of trust in Subaru, who can't talk about "Return by Death". After arc two, nee-sama holds him in that sort of regard; well, she really does know how to look at people.
As he was until just before now, if Garfiel had been hit by Ram's rush attack, he'd have been knocked out. Having said that, Ram and Garfiel having the sort of training where they'd be punching each other hasn't happened for years. As you'd expect, they haven't done it while they've both progressed to this point. Garfiel was probably holding back, at least a little.
And even then, that's the sort of nee-sama she is...
Oh I see, this was Otto's named chapter, was it? Huh, then what are we doing for the second half? (foreshadowing!)
The true continuation of last round's ending. Inside the tomb, Subaru runs towards Emilia as she sits on the ground, but just as even he says himself, his qualification to enter the tomb has been taken away, and after suffering that leaves his face dirtied, he's finally managed to make it here.
The same as with Puck disappearing, Subaru once again not keeping a promise is having an effect. Setting aside what Subaru was doing after breaking his promise, disappearing without an excuse or note just won't do. No, it won't do at all.
From the point of view of Emilia, who hasn't been able to pass a single trial, she's been unable to respond to Subaru, who's always been helping from arc one through three, and she wanted to believe in the word "love" that Subaru used, but that was betrayed by a broken promise... The result of that is "You never expected anything from me, did you?".
Up until now, Subaru and Emilia arguing is something that has only occurred once, when Subaru was trying to withdraw, and Emilia was showing consideration for him, at their fight in the castle in season one, episode 13. Maybe the one-sided one in episode 17 would apply, too? This is their first fight since then.
"Why do I have to go through all these painful things just to help a troublesome woman like you!?" is Subaru's real feelings, and his heartfelt confession.
Partway through, even the background music disappears, and it's entirely the two of them laid bare; that's neat, isn't it.
The flow of things here, where Emilia's inner feelings are overflowing out, contrasts with the part where Subaru shouted out "I don't want to lose anyone else like I did Rem!"; as the author, that's the image I have of it.
    Moms are awesome!
This depiction of the one you're speaking with showing up in your eyes, is the sort of thing you can't do in a novel, but you can here since it's an anime. How dare you, that's cheating, how dare you......!
Look look, it's the second episode title!! (the foreshadowing came true!)
Well, now that Subaru and Emilia's first clumsy argument is over and they head outside, Garfiel is waiting for them, covered in blood. Otto died!?
Otto's past, and Subaru and Emilia's argument is a collection of important moments in the view of the author, so we asked too much of the episode titles. While wondering "Is that the sort of thing you do with titles......?", that's one of the specialities of Re: Zero, using titles as part of the performance!
And with that, thanks for joining us again this week! After making our way through this fight, how will Subaru and the others deal with Garfiel next week? Look forward to it! And for what happened to Otto!

Interesting observation you made about Satella's love being similar to Subaru's love for Emilia. It is true that both Subaru and Emilia do not get why Satella/Subaru are so obsessed with them, but I feel like the big difference between Subaru and the Witch of Envy is how they expect their partner to reveive their love: WoE seems to not care at all about Subaru's feeling when she is in her "Aishiteru-mode", but Subaru took all the pressure from Emilia in this confession, telling her that it was ok for her to take some time before answering.
I myself interpreted the confession scene more as a parallel to Rem's confession in season 1, with Emilia at her lowest point and Subaru having to get her out of this dire situation.Tthe whole speech is even similarly structured, with Subaru starting out by telling Emilia all the physical attributes about her that he loves, only to then move on to her values/behaviour that he finds lovable.

I really like how Tappei (the author) portrays Emilia's emotions here. He literally makes it feel so real. People can say she's stubborn or stuff but that's some real emotions. She's just like a kid trying so hard to get out of her comfort zone and the pressure she's feeling is no joke.
When Puck left her, I was like "Damn bro this shit is already hard and you made it harder for her, relax man." And I was screaming too, when Subaru and Emilia is fighting, because if Subaru told her the reason he had to go out, their fight aint gonna escalate that way. But the ending of the fight is worth it though so I let it slide.
I remembered reading this arc in the web novel a few years ago and damn, Emilia's character really grew in me. And the character development is amazing too.

A lot of reactors compare this and say its "rem's speech". For one, it was always " Subaru's speech".
He gave it to rem in EP 11 of S1 and emilia in EP 25 of S1. Then he does the same to Emilia, Garf and Beatrice in S2. Also everyone gives speeches. Emilia does it to subaru in S2 EP1, echidna to subaru and even otto to subaru.
Also for another thing, its not even comparable, emilia accepted subaru's love with a kiss showing she subconsciously loves him even if she cant understand love yet.

18:33 he didn't hate it, his thoughts were cut from the anime but he was trying very hard not to like her (even that veil she wore on her head was something he created to avoid looking at her), in the novel it is made it clear that he loves her too (btw in arc 3 he even made a declaration of love about her, and at the end of the arc he tells her that he himself would meet her and asked her to wait, obviously she accepted), A lot of things about Satella were cut from the anime, from what you said you already know that Satella and the Witch of Envy are different people, but there's a lot more about the Subaru x Satella relationship that needs a certain depth in the novel to understand ( for example, in ep 13 satella should have explained why she loves him, in the novel due to her explanation the two already had a relationship in the past).
Now as for Emilia, the fact is that she still doesn't understand much about distinguishing love and affection, she started to fall in love with Subaru since he asked her name, and also she has always been jealous of him, for example, there is a side story where her group plays the king's game, she takes the straw from him and could have asked for anything, but she asked him to pet her like he petted Rem (and she shows jealousy in this regard), however, due to the fact that she still Not having the memories of her own past, she still doesn't know how to react romantically with Subaru (and yes, she will learn that over time, but if you're going to make a comparison, the Emilia we know is like she was around 13-14 years old mental, when she came out of the crystal in her film she was practically a child in terms of mental age, and she spent a lot of time alone before Roswaal found her, in this case she only had the puck as a family), anything from here would be spoiler, I hope that with the change in anime production in the new season they fix these gaps that were left with the satella that the director left, apparently they are trying to adapt the novel more faithfully without cutting things out, even the design has adapted to become more similar to the novel.

    • @jdoggivjc

I disagree with the assertion that Emilia begins to fall in love with Subaru this early in the story (I personally subscribe to the popular idea that it's towards the end of Arc 6, reasons which should be made clear at the end of S3). However, this absolutely marks a turning point in their relationship. In this moment Subaru finally becomes the one person that won't coddle her and will tell her how it really is - and that in this moment she's being a "pain in the ass" that isn't living up to the promises she made to the people she's sworn to protect... and, as she said herself, promises mean everything to spirit arts users. Subaru has literally become Emilia's best friend and is the foundation for Emilia's radical character change - the character that will be prominent in S3 and beyond.

@@jdoggivjc I disagree with your disagreement, I said that she started to fall in love with him since he asked her name (this becomes clear in arc 5 when she remembers him, even at the beginning of the story she ran away from her contracts sometimes to find the subaru because she wanted to talk to him more), the process of her falling in love with him was something gradual, in arc 4 she had even accepted his kiss (which, as we know, she thought would get her pregnant, and she was ready to starting a family with him, even though it's a cute scene shows how much she already liked him), in arc 5 she makes it clear that she still doesn't really understand what it means to love, but she has already decided that it will be the Subaru that she will love, in the Arc 6 is just a reaffirmation of this, Emilia herself flirts with him throughout the entire arc at various times (and at the beginning of the arc she makes it clear that she won't let anyone else have the Subaru, especially Rem when Roswaal questions her emilia about this), there are several scenes of Emilia flirting and declaring herself not explicitly to him in arc 6, at the beginning of the arc there is this scene that I mentioned, even at the beginning when Ram takes Rem's chair, Emilia immediately took her hand from Subaru to accompany him with Beatrice, there are small scenes like the part where she said she would get water from the falls if it were through Subaru, after Subaru lost his memory Emilia was going to declare herself to him in chapter 54 (but WoE got in the way , but Emilia later made it clear that she is still going to declare herself, but in chapter 54 Emilia made it clear how much she likes the Subaru and also made it clear that she wants him for who he is, not for what he represents for her or for any other person, at the moment she was going to say that she loves him, WoE appears and ends up killing them both by destroying the tower), there was the scene when Subaru regained his memories, Emilia ran to hug him and he said he was going to get married with her (leaving her happy and embarrassed), basically in arc 6 she was already sure that she loves him, she just hasn't openly declared it yet.

Subaru’s love for Satella is a feeling he doesn’t fully understand so it makes sense he tries to ignore it. Since he never met Satella, whether his strong emotions are truly love is still questionable (I say this since the with and Satella are known for making people feel certain ways that they don’t consent to or cannot control. This is something that happens very frequently in the series, either with the witch of lust or a certain arc 5 event. As well as the miasma cave in the later arc.

we start with Garfiel's character display of arrogance, having completely ignored Otto's capabilities & existence as he focused on Subaru alone, In turn, it also shows us Otto's resourceful side as he buys time-& his lack human friends explains his actions in EP32
I appreciate about this matchup is that Otto, physically, is beyond weak & on the level of Subaru. Only through his wits and his blessing of communication is he able to do anything against Garfiel's brute force.
The audio direction in this epsiode was stellar, drowning out the concern of his parents-but what I love most is the concept of Otto's character.(The audio team literally carried season 2 ) Specifically, him being disabled-coded, with late-blooming communication skills resulting in his inability to form human relationships.
The disability is represented via the concept of Divine Blessings. Otto's struggle was a lonely one, which no one could hope to understand.
Perhaps that's why he was so willing to believe Subaru that easily, because he knows what that kind of personal hell is like.
One thing I'd like to draw attention to is that Otto, right up until he gives his parents that note, shows no emotions, largely having the same expression.
Only after he gives that "Thank you for everything" note to his parents does that change, crying for the 1st time, having finally been able to communicate with someone else.
For Otto, communication is everything- hence why he punched Subaru to his senses with such vigor in EP38.
The adult otto sequence in hometown tells us is Otto's craving for warmth & a partner through the visuals, him being a stickler for honesty, & a Blessing-specific insult triggering him to the point of doing the unreasonable.
Otto finding confidence in himself, not only moving forward despite his Divine Blessing's drawbacks but also making use of it in the scenes to come, is very uplifting.
And thus comes Subaru's significance for Otto. Needless to say, somebody actually SAVING him means the world to someone in Otto's shoes. But more than that, the near-death experience made him realize his gratefulness for simply *being alive*, & for the one who granted him that, so in a sense, Subaru made Otto appreciate his own life, which motivates Otto throughout Arc 4.
What I said earlier about Otto understanding Subaru's struggle is evidenced by these momentary flashes Otto has in his mind, of Subaru and his own childhood. The narration or Otto himself don't tell us anything, because they don't HAVE to-the idea is perfectly conveyed visually. It was cool to see an outside perspective of Subaru (beyond Emilia or Rem's POV).

theres also a question of whether love is even really an emotion you can truly explain. which is why the kiss was so necessary for emilia to really understand
the author loves parallels, parallels with subaru and roswaal. subaru and otto, subaru and wilhelm. subaru and petelgeuse. scenes are always being brought back up. like straight bet was used in last episode and episode 7 of season 1 when subaru jumped off. with it paralleling yhe first time subaru used his life to save another. and when subaru vowed to not use his life like a resource

Emilia is failing to do what she has to, and is in too much pressure because she is failing continuously in her mind, and feels worse because someone who loves her and has expectations for her succeeding is still giving her full support and she want's him to give up on her.... and that's exactly Subaru's position in the real world with his parents, The same expectations that almost destroyed his life and same would have happened again if accepted echidna' contract living though lens and expectations of others.
Her self-worth is in shambles, and the kindness & understanding shown to her by Subaru & Puck come off as unreasonable & scary.
Emilia, left alone by both Puck & Subaru against the memories slowly flooding her, isolates herself at the Tomb. She desperately wants to lean on someone (recall EP36), but has no one for it. from this point on, is all about getting Subaru's feelings through, re-establishing a healthy communication, & not have her rely on anyone.
Her self-worth is in shambles, and the kindness & understanding shown to her by Subaru & Puck come off as unreasonable & scary,This is also an opportunity for Subaru, for the first time ever, to vent out his not-so-positive feelings towards Emilia, as he lays his entire heart bare. That's a new side of Subaru, and it's been a long time coming.
However, even with all that said and done, he finishes it with "I love you".
Because the idea here is that love, and thus believing in someone, needs no justification like how Emilia thinks. All the flaws & strengths he spoke of don't mean much in the grand scheme of things.
Take note of Subaru's words here - his growth is notable, and this conversation feels like a continuation of their quarrel in S1 Episode 13, in a way, Subaru accepts all of her weaknesses & offers to walk by her side, without doing everything for her (like by taking the Trials.
To Emilia, Subaru's genuine love for her feels like his suffocating idealization of Arc 3, as she refuses to believe him and take his words at face value. "Don't talk like I'm just some doll!" especially cuts deep. But it is precisely because he doesn't see Emilia as "just some doll" (anymore) that he left her side (among other reasons), not letting her entrust him with everything.
Finally, the end touches upon the other main source of her struggles-the fear of how she'll turn out after regaining all of her memories, and whether she'll still be herself. If the point of origin is wrong, doesn't that make the path walked and the destination all wrong as well?
Here comes into play Subaru's "homework".
It doesn't matter where Emilia comes from, or how her experiences shaped her. It won't erase the path she's walked until now, won't change his thoughts on her, & no one can decide her path up until now has been wrong until the very end.
The last scene's uplifting brightness is a clear, deliberate contrast with their grim first kiss in Taste of Death.
"It was not not like the first time, which carried the cold taste of death. The second kiss... bore the hot taste of life."
In the end, Subaru proves his point through actions rather than words. Upon reaching a mutual understanding, what had initially been just her reflected in Subaru's eyes becomes reciprocated (the eye reflection shots being a motif within pivotal moments of SubaEmi's relationship).
To this day this episode is very misunderstood even more than ep 18 S1, and judging by some comments here even more so. Both this episode and from zero ep 18 are not ROMANTIC ones and not the point of it,Yes romance is used as a tool to get to the point, but that's not the focus or main point actual romance hasn't even happened in the show so far(Read side stories for kino romance) its in the title of both the epsiodes what they are about "From Zero" and " A Reason to believe"
i will make a separate post about otto part as well.
Personally i was very disappointed with Adaptation of this episode or just the whole S2 Part 2 in general but i am glad the main messaging got through, it was supposed to be 2 teenagers having a messy conversation because that's how it is.. my disappointment really comes just the huge downgrade in visual quality the static shots, very rushed direction , the butchering of fights b/w ram otto vs garfiel..etc,But this is what happens when you have to animate 13 ep in 3 months with 1/3 staff of season 1 with covid pandemic at its peak...its management's fault as always, its nice to buy extra ad slots but what's the point if quality isn't there see i am not expecting freiren level of quality but something on the level of S1 would have been fine.

Yeah the original Ram Otto vs Garf fight I wished was handled better. They really made it too quick.

Despite losing her horn ram actually can still use her demon power for short amount of time, but at a cost of vomiting blood and rendering herself unable to move for a long period of time and its only 10% of her Original power

I’m sorry but after all these years, I still don’t get how Subaru can love Emilia to this extent lol ik this episode is meant to be moving or whatever but can’t feel anything because of that. OTTO is the true main character in this one lmao

That's the point. You're not supposed to really get it.
The author purposely created this dissonance between us the viewers and Subaru as a person.
You might ask yourself, why? Well there is a good for that.
The author wants to show that Subaru is his own person and not someone who goes with that the viewers would want to do. What Subaru did with episode 18 was basically breaking the self insert to a certain part of the audience ( that wanted him to choose Rem ). By making a rather "controversial" choice he distanced himself from the expectations put on him by the viewers and became his own Person. The author even gives us two messages in this scene. For one he says through Rem that we only focus on the negative and turn a blind eye in the good things he does ( i.e staying true to his feelings, being honest about it with Rem. On the other side he's holding up a mirror to anyone complaining about his choice to love Emilia. He says "Look you're behaving just like Subaru did in episode 13"
Anyway to get behind Subaru's devotion for Emilia you have to face one fact.
Actual romance is illogical. Something as love has little to no rationality to it. Try understanding why people fall in love and you'll soon hit a wall. We don't have to understand the reasoning for a romantic devotion because it will most likely be completey strange to us. Of course it is useful to know this from a narrative standpoint but the character has to be an open book for that. In Subaru's case we slowly explore his character bit by bit and through the recent self reflection and acceptance showcased in episode 18 we can make slow steps towards a fundamental understanding of his thoughtprocess and emotional state
But still we can make attempts to understand it until the curtain slowly lift the further we get into the Story.
One of the most important scenes of the entire series and for Subaru's love to Emilia is his very first death. The scene when Emilia dies next to him and he swears that he will safe her. This is the vow a man made in his dying moments. If this isn't shaping him for life then I don't what does. The dialogue of this exact scene is written on every novel so it holds a significant meaning. He devoted himself to save her. This coupled with the Development or romantic feelings leads to a really strange mix of uber devotion.
Another reason is that Emilia pretty much was/partly is the anchor for his sanity. Episode 8's crying scene is the moment when Emilia became the personification of mental and psychological comfort, a safe haven he could return to and let all his piled up emotions and frustration out. He even says that he saw her as the only Person that could understand him. While we know what happened between those two I can't Imagine this connection of mental comfort being completely gone.
I think the discrimination she experiences may also play a role in this. He's a person with our understanding of racism in a world that is full with it. Why wouldn't he resort to protect the victim with all his might? Once again this is probably only what fueled his unwavering devotion and love even more.
In The end we can only assume now and work with the bits of Information the story has given us so far but we also should respect his decision as that of a Person.

She was his first friend in a long time. She was someone around his age who wasn’t his parents and the first to have helped him when nobody else would, or had helped him in years. Almost everyone else has acted in self interest and she did it when there was no benefit for her.
      She also has silver hair.

@@devilman444a Emilia is the first and only person who helped him without a reason and without him doing something for her beforehand. People don't remember the state subaru was in before arriving at Lugunica and even after getting there, all his expectations of being a op protagonist were crushed and Emilia was the only ray of hope, everyone else including Rem only start treating him good after he does something for them, even Otto. Julius would be an exception but Subaru didn't know that duel was for his sake so in his POV it doesn't count.

I guess I also couldn't empathize well. But I think this is a kind of foreshadowing. The reason why he fell in love with Emilia upon first meeting... I think author may be using the time travel element to imply that there was already some kind of relationship before. In fact, as we can see, the author is very meticulous and detailed. So I think Subaru’s infinite love is one of the key pieces of the story.
