Having lived and worked in Hawaii for decades, daily domestic flights were the way to get to work and home every day of the week. Living in Kona and flying to work in Honolulu was a delight. 20 min flight home in FC with a glass of wine; is there any better life/work style than that? But what made it the ultimate was the family feel of Aloha Airlines.

@@talelwahabi I was speaking about the airlines in Hawaii; Aloha Airlines. They are now defunct as Hawaiian Airlines mostly ran them out of business. They never claimed bankruptcy as a family owned business unlike Hawaiian did a few times.

I study in Istanbul and my family lives in Ankara, because of that I've flown between Istanbul and Ankara many times with Turkish Airlines on 787-9, A330-200 and 777-300ER, they were amazing and the flight time is approximataly 40 minutes.

Shortest flight I've ever taken in Turkey was from Istanbul to Canakkale. You're only in the air for like 25 minutes. I felt bad for the crew as they were passing out the meals like they were on the amazing race. 🤣 Nevertheless, I never had a bad experience with them. The crew is always so kind and considerate.

I have NO clue what happened. But my best guess was a green crew who advanced the throttles without completing the prior-to-takeoff checklist. The configuration alarm sounded, the pilots thought they fixed the problem, attempted the takeoff again, problem persisted, and then they triple checked everything before departing successfully.
Take this hypothesis with a pinch of salt so great you'll get sodium poisoning. But yes.

i dont think you are wrong. Turkish has notoriously derp pilots at least in terms of how they fly. Talked to a Danish pilot who worked there, and he said their culture in the cockpit isn't the most sterile. So I doubt they are the best trained too. I flew once with them, where over the middleeast/asia, we literally did a circle, on a nightflight from BKK i think. As in, a full 360, even saw it on the map. as if circling due to congestion or tech issues, and countless dodgy landings as well. I know about the soft landings not being good, so thats not what im talking about. But yea. Weird crews for me. Anyone know what my 360 couldve been ?

yeah happened all the time everybody forgot the fucking flaps its normal ...
they have the check 3 times or more ...........I have seen some pilots checks the list 10 times I thing here happened ;they don't check 10 times !
      ARE YOU FUCKING MIND !
3 times check list and forget the flaps !
      something different happened
they are not the best pilots but definetly there 3 pilots
      I don't think all 3 forget the flaps !
or check the list correctly ...... all 3 pilots can see the flaps middel of the consul .....so YOU ARE VERY WRONG !

Also ; if you are coming to the airport by taxi ; just ask the driver to drop you in CIP lounge which has its separate check-in area and directly leads to the CIP Lounge. You simply dont need to walk around that much :)

I'm totally with you on the hot towel and boarding music. Learned to love them on Cathay Pacific 747 flights to and from Hong Kong and beyond. Great way to wash away the ordinary and start a proper adventure. And I created a YT playlist with about 20 airline boarding themes [Faves: Etihad; Emirates; Cathay Pacific] and play it while I work. My short flight story: Years ago I was flying upstate New York to Orlando on US Airways to visit my parents with my son. Can't remember exactly the circumstances but a delay caused us to miss our connecting flight so we ended up in Atlanta and got rebooked on a Delta L-1011 jumbo...ATL to MCO! Must have been a regularly scheduled flight at the time--we're talking late 1980s or early 1990s--but it was an unexpected treat for an hour or so flight. Great video. Thanks for the share...safe travels!

I took a domestic (STN-PIK) with Ryanair about two decades ago. The intended airframe had gone tech, so we boarded…a chartered BAC 1-11! Absolutely gorgeous plane to fly. Old-Skool comfortable seats, knotted cord mesh magazine holders (remember those?!) and ridiculous legroom. Even better, because the elderly engines struggled, we cruised at 25,000ft on a gloriously clear day. It was like looking at a scrolling map! Because we were low and slow, it took about 20 mins longer than scheduled. I’d have settled for two more hours! Truly a flight experience from when aviation was a treat. We’ll not see its like again.

Had a pretty enjoyable experience on ANA's Haneda-Sapporo pre-COVID. It was a 550-seat domestic config 773 operated flight at 8am on a Saturday. I was in Econ class but the flight was literally empty. I figure there was less than 50 pax on that plane. So the fantastic part of the flight is that I have 3 rows of 30 seats in total just for myself, not that I can use them all, but it feels really strange. There is no meal service but I got the iconic Japanese cream of corn soup for "drink". They don't advertise the soup but it's available on all domestic flights at the drink cart. The icing on the cake is that wi-fi internet is free on ANA's (and JAL's) domestic flights.

The shock came when I departed Istanbul but had a (somewhat stopover) in Constanta Romania! The passengers going to Varna did not disembark and stayed on the plane while additional passengers from Constanta boarded! It was the most bizarre (in a good way) experience for me. Oh and Turkish still served food! The flight between the two was less than an hour. 😂

Really depends, it would generally be 1 service a day either at 6AM or 7AM and out of Melbourne. You might have the odd afternoon 787 service maybe once every 2 weeks. The best value is defiantly on the 3-4 hour flights trans continental and trans Tasman in the A330.

I prefer TK for business class flights from the U.S. west coast to Europe, even when non-stops are available. The great catering, onboard chef, menu options, and entertainment make for a wonderful flight experience. Then there's the TK lounge at IST, just wow. And, if one is careful in selecting flights, the shorter connecting flight from IST to Europe will be on a wide body with true business class seating and amenities. Just had this flight yesterday at 7A from ADB-IST. It was a slightly renovated 777. It had bigger screens, full touch-screen IFE controls were mounted at shoulder level at seat enclosing(?) thus giving a bit more privacy. Above the IFE control, there is a fixed reading lamp. Privacy divider was put between seats, so you don't have to lift your armrest. Also, the ottoman under the screen was more like box, it had a lid, so you could put your belongings and then close it. Since it's a short flight, crew was working at a high pace to serve breakfast and was very helpful. In addition to cheese plate, there were croissants and rosinenschnecken, as well as hot bread selection. 2-3-2 business layout on the TK's 777 is not the most desirable but I like the open concept business design at the window seat. TK's 787 and 350 business layout is blocking the window on most seats. I also had the IST-ADB flight about a month back on a new MAX-9 with its new short-haul business design, and it was really comfortable and pleasant as well. Greetings from Izmir.

  • @jameshawthorn

For the first aborted takeoff, I think it was most likely ATC or Ground Control revoking takeoff clearance due to a plane slow to exit the runway on the far end, or, a landing aircraft getting closer to the threshold than intended and it was easier to get your plane off the runway then have that plane go around. If it was anything maintenance or warning light related, I bet you would have gone back to the gate. The 2nd attempt without flaps was probably due to a sloppy run-through of the pre-takeoff checklist, probably due to the distraction of the 1st aborted takeoff. Luckily, a modern aircraft like the 777 would probably sound a bunch of automated alarms when the throttles were advanced, telling the pilots that their plane wasn't properly configured. On another note, been watching your videos for a long time and absolutely love them and you! Love your passion which is evident in every video you make.

Great video, thanks so much Dan! Interesting departure there- I would imagine maybe the flap item on the checklist could have been missed due to the aborted takeoff before it. Could be that they didn't configure the aircraft for a light load. Taxied off raised the flaps and forgot and got a caution and tried with 15 or 20 degrees of flaps. Or that they were told to test the caution system because they knew they could make up time in the air.

Well the max zero fuel weight might be up there but i don't think the fuel amount for that flight is alot. I just think the pilots needed to test something or that it wasn't configured correctly. My last theory is that the pilots were close to their 14 hour duty day.

On a different context, I have flown this exact route before on my visit to Turkey back in 2019, missed the initial flight so we got rebooked onto an A321

I flew a A300-200 out to Izmir and a B737-800 back. From the old Attaturk airport. We went from a bus gate too. In economy class we got a snack and a drink in avery shot flight.

Thai used to fly a 747 between BKK and HKT. I booked a business class ticket a few years ago (for about $100) and got a seat in First. That was very neat.

Hey Dan, a tip for you
If you are taking a domestic flight from Istanbul to any domestic flight in Turkey
You don't have to walk to the door
Istanbul's domestic lounge already has several gates for business and miles n smiles members and there will be buses to take you directly from the gate to the plane.
keep it in mind next time

Air Canada offers wide bodies (A330,B777 and 787) on flight from Toronto to Montreal vice versa flight is block at 1 hour but usually less once airborne. They offer a pretty decent product in business class. Hope you get to try them soon !

So international travellers don't know this (Serb living in Turkey here) but there is a separate Terminal for Business Class passengers on domestic routes, also known as the CIP terminal. You check in there, go through security and immediately enter the lounge. Furthermore, you do not board the aircraft through the gate, buses take you from the lounge straight to your aircraft, so you can't miss your life, since once you check into the lounge, they know you're there.

💡Route suggestion: Albeit not a domestic route - you should totally try Singapore airlines Changi to Kuala Lumpur (approx 1hr 4 mins). The service is truly divine.

Hi Dan, back in March 2019, I went on TK IST-ADB-IST on the 777-300ER and in economy, and I must say for a 40 minute flight they gave a massive simit with cheese and tomato and juice, which is pretty decent considering most Europeans airlines don't even give you a glass of water on European flights...BA rings a bell here!!!!!

The shortest most epic domestic flight I've taken is the amazing 30 minute flight from Srinagar to Leh in India. You navigate around towering mountains throughout the flight and the approach into Leh is spectacular

I take this flight weekly. During the entire summer I flew with the 787. Now they switched back to 777s. They also use MAX8 and 321s as well.

Great video, congrats. There is another European domestic route in which you sometimes get to fly a wide body plane....Madrid to Canary Islands (Tenerife or Las Palmas).

I live in Detroit, Michigan, USA. On August 16, 1987, Flight NW 255 (NorthWest Airlines) crashed on take-off from Detroit. Killing 154 people. All passengers and crew were killed, except for a beautiful little girl. She survived sitting on her mother's lap. Today, she is a grown woman. However, she was raised by extended family because her parents were killed in the crash.
I watched in horror when you pointed out the flaps were not in the proper take-off mode. This, along with pilot error is what caused the crash of NW255. Apparently, during the pre-flight checklist the pilot and first officer became distracted. When they resumed the checklist, they overlooked the flap adjustment.. They never adjusted the flaps and slats. Therefore, the flaps were in the incorrect position. Which is what brought this flight down during take-off.
Since then, I always watch the wing for the position of the flaps on take-off and landing.
I don't think there is anything that I could do if the flaps were in an incorrect position but I like to think I could.
    Just like you.
