Been using it for years. The best part about this knot is you can actually tie it while in the boat with less than perfect conditions. Best knot is the one you can tie correctly every time. Another great video.

Awesome video...I've been using the Alberto for awhile and hasn't given up on me... but man that additional turn at the end should make it even beefier.

Totally with you on the tag ends. I trim mine so close as to be nonexistent. I have my own version of an Albright knot that I use that's a slightly slimmer diameter but as you pointed out, that final cinch is vital to the integrity of the knot. I can feel and see the knot seat and when complete it almost looks like the braid is welded to my leader. I also agree that tying any knot efficiently takes practice and an understanding of how the knot should come together. Have a great day and thanks for sharing.

  • @TheBrand83

Used this for years. I also use the two extra turns as I always felt concerned about trimming the tag as short as possible and only having the one turn.

Thank you for your time and expertise. I agree with all the steps and techniques you employ in tying this improved Alberto knot, I have also watched other anglers add a triple wrap finishing knot using the braid tag end over the braid main line that adds a taper to the neck of the knot for easier travel through small rod guides, it also means the cut tag end of the braid line is nestled below the three wraps and is somewhat protected from the wear and fluffing effect. I love your tech tips, keep 'em comin' legend! Tight lines.

Great video! The "improvement" is what I will start using. I use flouro to braid a lot with some really heavy leaders. As an experiment, I tied the Alberto (not improved) using mono to flouro (15 main line to 60 leader) The knot looked really good, but with a 20 lb red drum on, the knot slipped, and instant release of a fish. The three wraps at the end clinches the main line and completes a secure knot. Thanks for this tip! Now I can go back to mono/flouro combinations with confidence.

You're welcome.....Not even an hour ago I was talking to one of my friends whom I haven't spoken too in awhile...His NRx and the recoils would shred his alberto knot.....he mentioned switching to this variant this spring and it added a bit of protection at the head of the knot and they now last multiple trips.....Same NRX 901 same Stella 4k same braid....just and extra wrap or two through to finish the nkot. So there is an unexpected bonus :)

So glad to have found this knot. Tested at home and at the lake and it has saved braided line for me. I have even set it up to go well into the reel casting a 2 oz lure and it survived two fishing trips. ( I Know I should retie) . Not really my favorite thing to tie in inclement weather ,so sometimes I tie an intermediate leader which is stronger than my terminal leader. that way when it does break off , I can retie mono to mono out fishing.

Cheers mate, hope you are doing great. I'm using this knot awhile now and I find that it performs great especially for the amount of time it takes to tie it. I switched to FG for a while as well but eventually came back to Alberto because it's much easier to get it done outside in the dark and in the wind. Keep up the good work.

Excellent tutorial. Been tying this knot, but now I will tie it with the variation. For cinching on the boat I just keep an old line spool with rubber bands wrapped around the arbor, just take a few turns of the braid on the spool and cinch away. Those small empty braid spools are perfect. Doesn't hurt to have one for the mono side too when you are using small mono.

I've been tying the Alberto for a while but not doing the "lacing" away snd back down. I csn see now the need to do that and with the three loop improvement. Will definitely give it a try. To help cinch tighter, once you take the hand wraps, with gloves, put your knees between your hands and push your knees outward, that leg strength really helps cinch down the knot. Great video. Subbed, thx.

Great video and is something I have been doing myself for a couple yrs now. When using 4 lb nano fil to 4 lb floro the Alberto knot with out doing the last e twists back through the regular Alberto would fail on ocassion. I noticed after adding the last step the two extremely thin diameters lines never failed at the knot again. That paired with my favorite double polamar knot is my go to and I have never had a knot failure with either one.

I’ve been looking at different “Double-back” leader knots to replace the GT I’m currently using. Most double-back leader knots were too complicated and tedious to do on my boat. This might be the answer. I’m gonna practice until I can manipulate a routine with my fingers, quickly and easily.

    I just started using.
    I haven’t fished it yet.
Just set two rods up with it. I primarily used the uni to uni. Fast easy. But I do not like the mono part of the uni to uni. It bumps the guides.
I think I am going to love the berto knot. Unfortunately I saw this upgrade after I tied up my rods. I use 40lb braid and 20lb fluro. I cut the tags super short. Hopefully they don’t slip.
I will try this method next time. As long as the knot stays small and the braid stays perfect in the middle. Some other knots the braid is like off the center of the fluro and it again causes a bump reelin through the guides.

I was fishing the Alberto knot exclusively till you posted your fg knot videos. Then we were commenting back and worth about the strength of the knots. So I started doing my own tests with different strength lines, braid and leader. What you said was true, that the Alberto knot didn't test as strong with lighter braid. I fish striper where casting distance is everything, and most people are using 20 lb braid. Comparing the strength of the Alberto knot and fg knot, I found the fg knot to be stronger, at least on dry tests(lifted 18.5 lbs). I used 20 lb power pro, and slick 8, on 60 lb trick fish mono leader, 30 lb seaguar blue label, 30 lb big game, and 20 lb. Andes premium mono, and 12 lb stren tuff mono (discontinued, I think). The 12lb I had issues with the line kinking, I tied my fg s under tension, foot to mouth, to much tension on the braid. I will have to try your way again but was more difficult for me. What was a surprise was when I tried to use 50 lb power pro. With the 60 lb leader, it broke at a low weight, 30 lbs! I remember reading forum saying to use less wraps with thicker braid, 16 or so, increments of 4 but not 20+ wraps like I did with 20 lb braid. That takes me back to what you commented to me, which is the use of the Alberto knot on thicker braid over the fg. With that said, I still like to get a barrel swivel between my braid and leader, know matter how small it is. With false albacore right around the corner and Spanish mackerel I run into in obx, I will probably go with the fg with my light braid. Few weeks ago I was cursing you trying to tie the fg knot but do appreciate the knowledge, and for giving me a better chance and landing some speedy predators.

What i find when getting to the 50-100lb braids and somewhat heavier leader material...getting it to cinch down all the way without a doubt the most important part of the knot. SOmetimes going with lots of wraps you can't. I was testing kbs between the fg and pr using 50lb j braid and 80 and 100lb fluro and mono. I was getting breaks at around 60lbs. I think the J braid's Actual break strength is around 65 to 70lbs. If you saw in this video where I mention the wrist spool getting soaked and dry and such.....That 12lb that you have may need to be sent to pasture. The method I showed.....doesn't work too well with light stuff....it's kind of a pain since the leader isn't rigid enough. Give 12lb p line halo a shot...I've been using that stuff for a few years now and it's tough as nails. (if you do..i'd go with 10 or 15lb instead of 12...the 3 spools i have bough of 12 were wavy when new....like...it seemed like it was wound too tight on the spool...but everything else i've used from them has been spectacular for leader material and knotting. I hate wasting $$ on fluoro...but I get my monies worth out of that halo stuff....and it never failed me yet...

I can honestly say i'm pretty confident in my FG's...I don't know why...but I'm really digging the PR knot now...I used to use a bow string serve tool and pr knot my hollow core finishes.....DId that for years.....but never bought a regular bobbin....I alway used fly tying bobbins and electrical taped a lead wire spool to hold the line...so I never really liked the pr for fishing knots......After buying a bobbin.....I started to really dig it.
Ping Aquaholik on Stripers online or Tackle tour about what you have going on with the fg on the 50-60. Maybe even Pametfisher or DenisB on 360 tuna...I'd be interested what they have to offer on it. I can't see why it'd pop at 30 at the join...if you are well versed in the knot.

Your accent sounds like a friend from Westchester. He grew up in CT, but family is from the NYC area and L.I.

Thanks man! This is how I tie it now. BTW San Diego deck hands use the Alberto to tangle with cow bluefin tuna so I figure it should a good enough knot for anything.

love it. the uni and uni been doing me well for my dropshot fishing but as i converted to full braid to my other fishing, i noticed my uni to uni snaps a lot due to the weights of lures i used. I tried tying this knot and it slips. this is now a game changer! u got my sub! (also roger told me about ya ^^)

Hey Thanks man!!! Roger is an awesome guy(even awesomer since finding out he's s a patreon supporter..lolol) Been goin back and forth with him for awhile on SOL. And we finally got on the water the other week.
Uni to Uni while fast is very weak. The alberto tied right even without the extra wraps is great. the extra wraps makes it even slimmer and no risk of slipping!

Excellent info. Thank you. Subbed. You bet I’m going to try this. The FG on a boat in the wind is a major PAIN.

@#&! Yeah it is... I find pr knots almost easier and safer with fluro... But Alberto when on the water
