    On all the FG knot videos there are so many comments about how difficult the knot is to make and how it takes longer to tie it. With all knots you need to practice. For me a FG knot now is very simple to tie and takes me about 2 and half minutes to tie. It has never failled me. You are 100% correct when you say the SC knot slips on ligter lines. Tried it with 10lb mono and 10lb braid and it keeps on slipping.

      have been tying an fg on my popper rod for a while now, had a serious play around with the sc knot, but found it was very prone to slippage, 80lb 8 carrier braid mainline to 100-120lb leader.

      I agree with the SC know slipping with lighter lines, but I have found a trick that works for me. I use YGK braid in either .6 (14lb), or 1.2 (25lb), which is very thin and slick, and 6lb-14lb fluorocarbon. After you wrap the braid around the flouro, very lightly snug the knot, just so it holds. Then I grab the mainline braid and pull the knot tight. If I do this the knot usually locks in and is solid. I hope this helps.

    Thank you! Very informative, lots of good details. I appreciate your camera and editing work, it helps a lot when one can actually see what you are doing along with your explanation of what you are doing. Your explanation of the mechanics of the knots was very helpful! Also, your choice braid and leader lbs. is what I use. Many other videos demonstrate with much higher lbs. line/leader, like for deep sea/big game fishing, but I needed to see how the knots worked and what they looked like side by side on line that I actually used. Thanks!

    Hey JP, we’ll done. I’m glad this knot is gaining some traction. I’ve been using it for a couple years now and was lucky enough to discover it coming out of Southeast Asia soon after it was developed. I think no question the fg is the best “easy” leader knot (PR bobbin is king, but is in a class of its own for the obvious equipment and skills needed to tie it). However, as I’ve been tying an fg for several years and still only get a good knot every 4th ish time for whatever reason (clumsy hands, maybe my dyslexia, getting sea sick, who knows) the SC is my main connection knot now. It is thicker than an fg, but only marginally so when compared to a uni to uni, a bimini to a Yucatán or no name, and even an Alberto or Albright. One thing you can try with thin and slick braid or hard floro is more wraps. I know a concern with wrapping too many times with an fg is the front doesn’t get tight, I’ve noticed that because this knot slips so much when tying that when I use slick braid, hard floro, or a significant difference between lb tests, think 8-10lb braid to 30 or 40 leader, that using 30+ wraps or more even the knot completely cinches down unlike an fg. Especially when you take your time and learn how to dress the knot as you’re tying. Maybe worth a shot…

    • @bradleystokes3277
      @bradleystokes3277 2 года назад

      Additionally, after fishing this thing for a while I’ve noticed that where the tag of the leader gets passed through the loop can get hot and weaken due to friction because you need an almost 90 degree angle to tighten. It like binds a little or something and when learning to tie it the only failures I had were like an inch behind the finish on the main line. When tying the night before or on the boat I use just a small amount, like less than a dab of chap stick right there at the loop (just slightly too much causes the knot to slip during tightening no matter how many wraps), and that problem is completely eliminated.

The only thing I do different is I clip the leader about a mm or two from the knot and cover it with a few 1/2 hitches then finish with the Rizzutto finish. For me it seemed to keep the knot together better when casting a long leader that has to pass through the guides. Thanks for the video. Definitely one of the best knot vid’s I’ve seen.👍🏼

    You are the first person who I have heard state that they are using the FG knot on very light braid to very light fluorocarbon line. I was wondering if I was the only one doing that on light spinning reels for high mountain trout. I cast very light jigs and lures and the braid gives me a huge advantage over straight fluorocarbon and the FG goes right trough my guides so I can use longer leaders. I can't tie the FG on windy days though because I have old eyes and can't see what I am doing so I tie the knots in an enclosed space and use a magnifying glass that loops around my neck and rests on my chest. Thanks for the video!

      I do the exact same thing for crappie down here in the south using 10lb powerpro to 8lb mono leaders. Using the "salt strong" method of tying really helped me with the FG's. Seems to take more tension on the mono and less on the braid to get the wraps to not wad up on lite lines for me. I was gonna try to tie the FG to a tapered fly tippet on one of my spinning reels for a Colorado fishing trip this summer. Figured it would be easier to make the FG knot on tapered diameter but have the benefit of the small diameter for tying on flies.

    G’day JP from Down Under. I share the same enthusiasm for the FG as yourself, but a point I’d like to make about the Rizzuto finish (which I’m not a fan of in this case) is that it makes the tag stand proud/perpendicular to the knot. Probably ok in heavier saltwater applications, but when fishing light rods with micro guides i think it’ll slow the line speed on the cast. I use the half-hitch method, but I don’t lock it as you end yp having the leader tag stand proud of the knot (even worse). 10-12 hitches on light PE (0.4 to 0.8) will do the job and still keep things tidy, and also give enough insurance if 1 or 2 hitches unravel (still leaving a short tag lying parallel to the main line). Anyway, thanks again for your great content and look forward to your next Shimano updates around iCast. Cheers 👍

On my second attempt, I got the knot to bite and it held VERY well. I think I will be using the SC knot for all my future light braid to fluoro unions, just because I don't want issues that I've had with the blood knot on fluoro.

    To my knowledge, the FG is the only knot that doesn't require a double (loop) in one of the lines to secure them together. That, of course, is why there is a difference is size, though both of them are fairly small. Many other knots will have a double in both lines and those knots, when pulled together, make for a short, but "lumpy", finish. By the way, I recently saw a video of a guide tying an FG knot with no tension. His reasoning is that he can tie it in a moving boat in the wind using only his fingers.

    I like to put the rizzuto finish after the cut end of the fluoro so it ramps up to it. This helps it go through the guides easier. That said, I prefer the sc knot because I have a better success rate with it. Have had a few fg knots slip off and lose lures because I screwed it up without knowing it. With the sc knot I find it's always on tight. Never had to redo them.

    Well, considering the FG is a smaller diameter knot, it's obviously superior for tying longer leaders. Sure the SC might be slightly easier for a beginner due to there being less tension involved in the wrapping of the knot, but when your tying longer leaders it's ALL about knot diameter and castability.

Half hitching it thee times both then cut the floro and finish it with more half hiches. Like this I hide the end of the florocarbon. And my FG is incomparably slick 😉 Test it if you like.

    I have a huge problem with JP using "unwrap" to describe what he's doing at around 7:00 . . . . because he's not unwrapping the line.

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  2 года назад

      If you’re referring to the Risutto finish, I am technically unwrapping the top side of the twists in the D Loop until there are no more twists remaining. That why I use the word unwrap. You are basically undoing the loops you just created with the tag end

      Yeah that confused me too, there was no close up of how this unwraping was done either.

    FG never fails.. using it for about 5..6 yrs maybe ..? Not once! Use on every rod I have except frog and punch/ flip..even cranking.. 30 to 12 or 16.. never fails.. ultralight 10 braid to 4/6 flouro for trout… hooks always buried.. hardly Ever lose a good fish…hooks never just fall out like using a flimsy cranking rod and mono or flouro… too much stretch

      Agreed. It's worth the extra effort in my opinion l, especially if you fish a variety of weight lines

    I just can't invest the amount of time it takes to tie the FG knot. It may be the ultimate in terms of breaking strength, but there are lots of other knots that I tie that are infinitely easier and have not caused me any problems with respect to breakage.

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors

      It’s not about breakage for me, it’s about casting performance more than anything. Being a 100% breaking strength knot is just a major bonus.

      Who was tying the FG Knots? The breaking strength never varies for me with all the testing. If you tie it right, your breaking strength is what the fluoro is.

    Wait hold on, why are you tying 5lb braid to 6-8 lb fluorocarbon, aren't you supposed to make your leader slightly less pound test due to the difference in diameter between braid and Mono/Fluoro. Furthermore, you don't wanna snap your braid end when your fishing with leaders due to the fact braid (especially PowerPro) costs an arm and a leg so you wanna waste as little braid as possible - Avid Crappie Fisherman

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  Год назад

      I have never broken my braid when tying to 5 lb. 5 lb power pro actually breaks at close to 15 lbs on average. With an FG knot, diameter has no bearing on the knot strength or connection quality either.

    • @Gstar5150
      @Gstar5150 Год назад

      @@JPDeRoseOutdoors yeah but your missing my point say you tie 10lb mono to 10 lb braid, your gonna end up with a way thicker knot that want fly through the guides as easily when casting. It especially makes a difference when you tie on 15-20 foot leaders, if I did that I would be losing way more braid from it getting frayed because I tend to fish a lot of heavy cover, those jokers on boats needa stop droppin those damn brush piles right by the shore.

      Appreciate it Samantha. She using heavier pound tests (especially leader material) there is a very easy way to tie the FG using the line wrapped around your fingers, but for light and supple leaders I have been am doing it this way for about 7 years now and it’s pretty quick. I just tend to slow things down for the camera so as not to lose a viewer. I will definitely check out the video you mentioned!
