Jo Sarojed my 20 year old daughter also started sewing this month since we have so much more time at home with the quarantine. She has made ten masks for friends and family using fabric her grandmother mailed to her. (All of the 100% cotton was sold out at Walmart! Lol) BEST WISHES to you! Just wanted you to know another young person was learning a new skill. You’ll be so glad you know how to sew for the rest of your life! Great job!
I have a vintage dressmaker model number f a v 900 I want to know how to thread the bobbin that goes in the front under the foot anyone can tell me that
This was a great lesson. Even though you are an expert you were able to explain things in such a way that a beginner would understand. Great people skills and a great teacher. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this.
Thanks so much, it’s my 1st time watching your channel so happy I found it, I had my sewing machine for over 20 yr and can’t wait to try it out!!! You made it look so easy. Thanks 😊
I'm a 14 year old girl and I really want to start sewing my own clothes and sewing things for my family. Tomorrow I'm going to try it out for the first time and I'm really excited! Hope everything will go great :'D Wish me luck and thank you~!
I’m a 12 year old girl and i’m trying to start a business and instead of having someone sew the clothes I designed, I want to sew it myself. I really hope my plan works out and i’m so nervous to start this business.
I hope everything is gone well for you!! It’s always a bit scary to start a business, especially so young and something new, but I am so sure that if you keep at it for a long time that you will become very successful ❤️❤️💙💙
Just wanted to say a big thanks! 52 year old male... never sewed a day on my life... finally bit the bullet and started learning, with this video. Made my first napkin tonight and couldn't be prouder. There's going to be lots more of those to come! Thanks again for the great instructional video.

I just have to say that I am so enamored with her hair and her overall look. Very pretty. Plus I love how detailed she is with her descriptions. Best beginner video I've found so far. :-)

This is the best how-to video I've found. I had ZERO sewing machine experience before watching this. Thanks to this video, I was able to sew some curtains for our pop-up tent trailer just a few days before leaving on a 3500 mile road trip. Thanks so much for a concise and easy to follow video.
48 year old fella here, just did my first cushion cover after i dug out our old 1950s Brother machine. t-shirt next, i'm hooked. This is what lock down has done to me!
Slow clap at 6:18 when she defines the often-debated ideal direction of a toilet paper roll all nonchalant like this hasn't been a common fight in families since the beginning of TP time...

I'm 13 and I use cosplay as a way to deal with my mental health so I need to learn something quicker than hand-stitching and I'm happy to see someone else doing it too :)
Did anyone noticed her matching floral print high heels 👠... I jst love ur style Gretchen...and ths is the best beginners guide..i really dnt even know the abcd of sewing machines bt after watching ths nw i hve understood a little step by step😘😘😘😘
What I love about growing up in this digital age is the ability to learn anything whenever you want. Obviously I can buy a book which I enjoy a lot, but there’s nothing like being able to watch a video or find a course online whenever I want.
My mom taught me how to sew when I was little. I learned on a very old school machine she purchased in the 60’s 😳. Time for me to get back to the basics 😃
I've watched quite a few beginner sewing guides and this one has really made the most sense, even though I have a different machine. Thank you for explaining why/how the little things are supposed to work not just "do this, do that".
Good on you :-) I saw this Video and it really helped to just learn the basics of the sewing machine as well. I saw this other video and I got really mixed up at this one bit because she just said: "Turn This Thingamabob" And I was super mixed up by this, but I agree with you. :-)
I want to thank you for taking the fear of learning to sew, for me at 72 years old to start and I will be watching your videos because your videos are easy to understand.
This is hands down the best video for beginners!!!! I have had a sewing machine for years and never had the time to sit down to learn how to use it. This video has me sewing and making a difference during this pandemic! THANK YOU!!!!!
As many Americans, we find ourselves locked in at home with a lot of idle time. I had purchased a gently used sewing machine about 3 years ago, and my wife “suggested” that it was time to figure out how to use it. I started out by reading the manual, always a good place to start, but am now looking to fill the gaps between the particulars of my machine, and what to do. I love your instruction style, your calm manner, your camera positioning, and a simple project to allow a beginner like me build confidence. I do hope that you have a kitchen curtain video, as that is the project that my wife has charged me with tackling, and it’s actually a bit terrifying. Thanks for showing me how to sew a straight hem...hopefully I can replicate it in due course.
I just bought my sewing machine today, I have trouble setting it up, after I watched you video, my set up went so smooth now, thank you so much, love to watch your videos, you are such a good teacher, every steps are so clear ❤️
Subscribed!! You are awesome!! I just saved myself $45 from going to Joannes' Fabrics and taking that sewing class! Thank you so much! My ten year old even enjoyed watching you and is going to also subscribe from her channel.
Thank you a million times!!! I am considering buying my first ever sewing machine. I'm a Granny ''New Bee''...no experience with a machine at all. I felt intimidated so, I just hand sewed everything. Now with this crazy Pandemic I find my hands don't hold onto a needle as well as they used to. Although, I have been getting by and have made quite a few masks, I feel all would be quicker (along with better stitching) if I switched to a machine. Thank you for the info about finding a mentor...never thought of that. I like the way you explained and demonstrated your instructions, your voice was very calming and inspiring. New subscriber!! Update: Well it is June 11th...today my sewing machine arrived. I am looking forward to learning how to use it all because, of this video that has been such an inspiration.
Hi, Mandy. I’m a granny too, and aside from poor sewing my freshman year of high school, I did no sewing except a few lessons I took last year. I have 2 experienced seamstresses willing to help me learn. I have a pattern, fabric and thread to make a pillow. I wish us many hours of happy sewing!
My mother passed away three years ago in May and she left me her sewing machine. I knew a few tricks from watching her but this has helped so much in a time where an indoor weekend hobby is needed. Thank you for being detailed about the machine and the sewing process in general ❤️. Btw love your pinup model style 😍 it gives this important trade a lovely vintage flare.
Fabulous tutorial 🎀 thank heaven for you! I cannot even count how many AWFUL sewing tutorials I have had the excruciating privilege of watching on RUclips this morning.. XoXo Sarah
+Katherine Sillaman EVERYONE clearly understood what the OP said, gaijin was just being sarcastic saying that "defiantly attending" sounds "aggressive"
I’m excited to start learning how to use the sewing machine. 58-year-old male, never Sewed anything before but I’m willing to learn and excited to get started. New subscriber.
I’d like to see the traditional singer sewing machine... My grandma used to have one and she is such an expert at sewing!!! Watching this makes me miss her a whole lot. 🤎
Hello and thank you so much. I have a question about the back stitch. If a machine doesn't have the option do you recommend a knot to secure the stitch so it doesn't come out or fall out? Thank you (rookie here 😐)
Thank you for the fabulous introduction with excellent command of the language and use of analogies to everyday tasks (driving a car, flossing teeth, etc.). You have inspired confidence for me to take the new machine out of the box!
In high school I opted to take shop class instead of home ec because I thought I would always have a chance to learn to cook and sew, but when would I have the opportunity to spot weld something? Well, fast forward 30 years and I still have not learned to sew. I found your video, got out the sewing machine that I bought but never had used, and got started. This video is so easy to follow - thanks so much for making this fun! I can't wait to move on to the next video!
Thank you for this awesome how-to vid! I tried and failed at setting up my machine a few years ago. With your incredible detailed instructions, I am going to try again!
I’m a 27 dude and I’m not quite sure why but I really want to learn how to sew. I like a lot of old fashioned things. Might be cool to sew mens clothes or clothes in general.
Enexaya, I'm sewing masks to help protect (at least a little) against COVID19. Not what I thought I'd be making, but I'm learning quickly. Thank you for asking. Also, I can make a scrunchie in five minutes or less now. 😁
I’m a ford mechanic and wanted to sew my own patches on and been wanting to learn to use a sewing machine, looks fun, thank you for the beginners tutorial I learned a lot from you!
Even though I’ve been sewing for 64 years I would recommend your videos to anyone who is interested in the art of sewing I learned by watching my mom when I was 6 and have been sewing ever since you make it very easy for the beginners who are interested in sewing I came across this video by accident but even thought I’ve been doing it for years it was very refreshing love your look your style is beautiful and you have your shot together and I love it keep doing what you’re doing and happy sewing
I’ve saved this video for reference since I haven’t touched my sewing machine in about 25+ years! Our 20 year old daughter has learned to sew during quarantine and has made ten masks for friends and family. I’m so proud that she has taken the time during quarantine to learn a skill that will be useful for the rest of her life! This video was VERY well done and I love the napkin project as a way to become familiar with the machine! Now to find 100% cotton during quarantine! Lol Thankfully my seamstress mother has a stash and can mail some to us!
Hello Gertie, Just finished watching your video on how to make a skirt. 🐦🐦☺☺☺I love the dress that you are wearing. Red flowers and white background. Would love to see you make this one or can you give me info on this. Keep. the sewing videos coming. (blouses, dresses, pants) Thanks again, Carol
I absolutely agree about the "take-up Lever"...I've had experiences where there was a huge pilling up of the thread and it looked horrible, each time I had to spent time to cut away the excess. Until I figured that it wasn't threaded properly so there wasn't that tension. Everything changed after that. So that's a great point. Awesome tutorial to show the basics. But one has to use a machine continuously to get a feel for it and comfort grows with experience. Thanks for Sharing. :)
I had to do like 10 before it worked but it did! Maybe try a couple times, it can also depend with the way it goes into it. Mine goes around the little thing of thread so it took longer
Ugh! I loved this video. I've been getting into sewing and have actually sewed a baby quilt by hand for my newborn cousin. But my mom gave me an old sewing machine she never uses anymore and I've been so terrified of learning how to use it. Now I feel 10x more confident that I can figure it out!
Thanks Gretchen! Like a few others here we are in quarantine and trying to make face masks. I did a little research and fumbled through some for my immediate family here, but was really struggling after reading the manual on an older Singer given to us after losing everything in a fire a while back. Lot's of birds nests and such. You saved my day. Today was much neater and am sending a batch of masks to some family in Houston. 61 years old. Never too late to learn something useful. Love the presentation and colorful space there!
I have to say a BIG "thank you"! I had NO idea what I was doing, never used a sewing machine in my life and was incredibly intimidated trying to figure out how to use this machine. You made this super easy to understand and I feel great about making masks for my family now. I'm VERY grateful for this content. Please make more videos! :)
Like many in this day in time quarantine has lead me to your wonderful channel!! My mother was a pro, passionate sewer. I always wanted to follow in her foot steps but she was called home before sharing her sewing tips. After watching your video I am excited to officially embark on this journey with her watching from above! You’re a great teacher!! Thanks for the inspiration 💗
I want to learn how to use a sewing machine cause my dad said he was gonna throw away my grandmas wedding dress! Then I said I’d make something out of it... but I don’t know how to sew. So thank you for your help!
Thank you for your course. I use to sew years ago and now wanted to start up again. I had forgotten the basics. LOL. Your class was absolutely, "P" for perfect as the the previous view suggested. Thank you again.
That’s a great tutorial - easy to follow and very comprehensive. I’ve just started creating protective wear for doctors and nurses in my local hospital and this tutorial was a lifesaver. Thank you! Also, I love your style. 😊🧵
My mom has a couple of different sewing machines so I took one and randomly decided I would try to use it. Now I’m just using some extra material to learn to see a little cat bed this rlly helped thx!
I already know most of this but my mom hasn't explained all of the basic parts I've just seen her do this before! This really helped me understand the mechanics of it!! I've been sewing awhile and I'm planning on finally making a dress that's Captain Marvel themed!!😁
I'm an absolute freaking beginner haven't done any sewing since 13yrs at school. I was atrocious!! Couldn't sew straight to save my life! I have a cheapie sewing machine sitting in my garage I brought 3yrs ago. I figure I can sew straight by default! My age! Haha in my 40's. thanks for helping no just show us sewing on a machine.
elena Sal .Dont feel bad you are not alone. I had actual given up and tried putting as an F. for failure. I was that bad. Just proves its never to late. Good luck to You!
elena Sal same here. I broke so many needles in home ec class and all because my needle wasn't fully raised. Instead of pointing this out, my teacher just changed the needle and walked away. I always wondered why I broke so many needles and here it is. 2 sentences on this video. Guess I wasn't the failure after all.
similar story to yours, elena: bought my machine when i was about 45 yrs old .... i'm now 59 🤶🏽. i just brought unopened box down from upstairs, & will follow this great vid as i practice. {tried to make simple pillow case @ age 14, but never finished it.}
Don't feel bad elena Sal. I used to sew clothes for my oldest daughter (who is now 48) when she was a little girl. After having a nervous breakdown many ago, which caused me to forget how to sew, I now have a new sewing machine and am learning how to sew again (at the age of 70) with the help of these videos! We're never to old to learn, or in my case, relearn.
HELLO I MUST SAY U R JUST AMAMZING I MEAN SO PROFESSIONAL WE ALL LOVED IT!!! I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF BEGINNER VIDEOS BUT YOU ARE THE BEST I WOULD LOVE TO JOIN YOUR CLASSES THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR GUIDANCE
wow you are an awesome teacher for sewing very easy to understand and love your channel will be using you to teach my daughter to sew love how you explain the different parts of the machine and how to get started keep up the good work because you rock how offen do you up load videos and what's a good age to start teaching my daughter she's 3 now will be 4 in July
i used a sewing machine for the first time when i was 8 or 9 with supervision and i never injured myself, so with careful supervision i think kids can learn to sew as long as they can tie their shoes and use a microwave lol
THIS HELPED ALOT ! I always see my friends sewing so when I started watching this video, i just went along the steps that the advisor told me and now i have a passion for sewing !!
I’m 15 and I wanted to look for a hobby other than watching Netflix all day in quarantine Lol. Thanks for this I’m really excited

The instructor is beautiful and a good teacher!
This was a great lesson. Even though you are an expert you were able to explain things in such a way that a beginner would understand. Great people skills and a great teacher. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this.
You're a great sewing guru, Gretchen. Thank you!

Hello, how are you doing my friend?
Oh my Gosh, you're so gorgeous and have a nice style. That's the kind of inspiration I've been looking for !
Fabulous tutorial 🎀 thank heaven for you! I cannot even count how many AWFUL sewing tutorials I have had the excruciating privilege of watching on RUclips this morning.. XoXo Sarah
Are your classes in California, because I'm giving you a " "P" for perfect" for this video.
I would defiantly attend.
& you have a new subscriber.
Are you for real? Enthusiastic more like, you sound ignorant.
+Katherine Sillaman EVERYONE clearly understood what the OP said, gaijin was just being sarcastic saying that "defiantly attending" sounds "aggressive"
***** Yeah, I am sure that is what she meant as well.
No kidding.
I’m excited to start learning how to use the sewing machine. 58-year-old male, never Sewed anything before but I’m willing to learn and excited to get started. New subscriber.
Congrats Mark! I am in my late 40s and need a creative hobby, so here I go:)))
Good for you. Now I bet you are doing a lot stuff now.

Hello Peggy
Im a guy that makes puppets ( a bit like the muppets) thanks for making my hobby ten times easier x
Amazing
I just received my first sewing machine for Christmas, I am so glad I found your channel. Thank you for sharing.
Mademoiselle Aime Le Style me too!! :)
Me to
Same here!
How are your sewing skills now?
Enexaya, I'm sewing masks to help protect (at least a little) against COVID19. Not what I thought I'd be making, but I'm learning quickly. Thank you for asking. Also, I can make a scrunchie in five minutes or less now. 😁
I highly recommend this video this is the only video that has taught me how to set up my machine and I just started sewing. Thank you for your help
"If Youre fabric is forming a huge nest of threads its probably youre presser foot"
Me : oh so thats why
After day 1 of wasting si much of thread I finally learnt what I was doing wrong. 😆✌️
I’m a ford mechanic and wanted to sew my own patches on and been wanting to learn to use a sewing machine, looks fun, thank you for the beginners tutorial I learned a lot from you!
Thank you so much. You're so helpful, clear and concise. I never had to fast forward thru boring info. You're the best !

Love the 50's style, she wears it well. She is also a great instructer and if I were needing and looking to learn, this would be my choice.
I really want to learn how to sew but I don't have a sewing machine 😭😣😔 your really good at sewing 😉👍👌
Hello Gertie,
Just finished watching your video on how to make a skirt. 🐦🐦☺☺☺I love the dress that you are wearing. Red flowers and white background. Would love to see you make this one or can you give me info on this.
Keep. the sewing videos coming. (blouses, dresses, pants)
Thanks again,
Carol
I absolutely agree about the "take-up Lever"...I've had experiences where there was a huge pilling up of the thread and it looked horrible, each time I had to spent time to cut away the excess. Until I figured that it wasn't threaded properly so there wasn't that tension. Everything changed after that. So that's a great point. Awesome tutorial to show the basics. But one has to use a machine continuously to get a feel for it and comfort grows with experience. Thanks for Sharing. :)
anyone else stuck at the part where the manual stitch is supposed to make a loop with the thread? mine will not form that loop
I had to do like 10 before it worked but it did! Maybe try a couple times, it can also depend with the way it goes into it. Mine goes around the little thing of thread so it took longer
I'm 17 and I will create my own clothing, this really helped thank you
Ugh! I loved this video. I've been getting into sewing and have actually sewed a baby quilt by hand for my newborn cousin. But my mom gave me an old sewing machine she never uses anymore and I've been so terrified of learning how to use it. Now I feel 10x more confident that I can figure it out!
I'd just like to say that I. Love. Your. Style.
Leticia Let me too

Can you help charmaine
Finally, an actual beginner video ! This was so helpful !💕
Wow, the best beginners sewing video I've ever seen. Your instructions and explanations are so easy to understand!
Also, your hair rocks!
That's a crazy serious iron.
Jon Hohensee I know right

I have to pause the video to make this comment. Amazing tutorial! You are a great teacher.
The pink dress in the background is 💗
Thank you for your course. I use to sew years ago and now wanted to start up again. I had forgotten the basics. LOL. Your class was absolutely, "P" for perfect as the the previous view suggested. Thank you again.
Hello Valerie
Thank You for teaching me what I was going to until we all got Quaritined :)
This has been a buoy for me. I've forgotten so many things about sewing, and this video was a great refresher. Thank you.
I am 13 I have learned how to do crochet and now am excited to learn how to sew :)
Hallelujah! One of the best beginner tutorials hands down!
Amen & AMEN thee Very Best Video!!! She's heaven sent for sure!!!
Best tutorial I have seen. Right to the point I m 73 and beginning...u are so calm and pleasant. Love vintage ...subscribed. thank u!!!
Guess I wasn't the failure after all.
similar story to yours, elena: bought my machine when i was about 45 yrs old .... i'm now 59 🤶🏽. i just brought unopened box down from upstairs, & will follow this great vid as i practice.
{tried to make simple pillow case @ age 14, but never finished it.}
Don't feel bad elena Sal.

I couldn't use a sewing machine in my Textiles class because I wasn't there for that lesson so I'm just watching this I guess 😂😅

i used a sewing machine for the first time when i was 8 or 9 with supervision and i never injured myself, so with careful supervision i think kids can learn to sew as long as they can tie their shoes and use a microwave lol
THIS HELPED ALOT ! I always see my friends sewing so when I started watching this video, i just went along the steps that the advisor told me and now i have a passion for sewing !!
