This teacher is approved by a Mexican mom. The way she teaches is the way a professional teacher should conduct herself without being condescending. She actually teaches with dignity and respect towards her students. I love everything about her. You are so brave, thank you for teaching us. Your wonderful video auto-played after one of the how-to-make a mask videos. Amazing, this video is great because you explain things in utter simplicity without being monotonous nor condescending. I love your style, ink, hair, and now your videos. I might give this sewing thing a chance. Thanks

For you novice seamstresses out there: I would recommend lightly pressing the fabric before laying pattern pieces and cutting. The folds can sometimes cause the cut pieces to be uneven because they didn't lay flat while cutting. I have always pressed out any folds or wrinkles before laying out patterns and cutting. It's a LITTLE (short) step that results in BIG (great) results.

Or depending on the fabric, you lay it down and smooth it out and lay out the pattern pieces and weight it down with rocks, crystals, books, or sewing weights. It saves the paper from lots of holes making them last longer and you can use them more, save time pinning, and it keeps the fabric smoother for cutting evenly

As a complete beginner, having only last month learned how to operate a sewing machine, my wife ecstatically said, "Now make me a skirt!"
I searched youtube, and found this video, along with some other sewing tutorials of Gretchen's.
And using an old, but clean bedsheet, I successfully made the skirt described here.
I made a few learning mistakes, as this one was only intended to be a first time attempt.
I had the zigzag gathering and dental floss too low, and not entirely within the seam allowance. This was a bad mistake. It really has to be entirely north of the seam.
For gathering, I chalk marked the waistband in equal eighths, and did likewise with the skirt seam. Then i pinned on the eights. This made it much easier to spread the gathers evenly.
On the short end of the waistband, I forgot to leave the full 5/8" east of the zipper center, so when I cropped that end of the waistband, the zipper didn't fit.
Despite my best efforts to align the waistband, and pinned it, the inner side of the waistband came out north of the outside, and the top stitching missed it. So I had some inner gaps in the waistband.
Likewise, on the overlap end of the waistband, I missed allowing the full 1 5/8" clearance when pinning the gathers, so when I cropped that end, I barely had an inch to reach the other end for the hook and eye.
A couple times when sewing the waistband, I caught other parts of the skirt, and had to stop and work with the seam ripper.
In fact, the first time I sewed the gathers onto the waistband, I forgot to ensure the waistband was lying flat against my right hand feeding the machine, and accidentally sewed about twelve inches of the waistband together. And that was half an hour picking at it with the seam ripper.
But this is why you try it for the first time with an old bedsheet. Next time I will do better.

      Hello Gretchen,
My wife wanted some face masks, and she found a video tutorial. She had never used a sewing machine, and didn't have time. So she talked me into the honours. I didn't know either.
But I watched the instructional video that came with the machine, and practiced the basic operation.
Then, with a lot of frustrated effort, I managed to sew a face mask.
My wife was thrilled after I had completed a few. And she said, "Now you can make me a skirt!"
It was overly ambitious, and not serious.
But tonight I found your video, and found it very interesting and enjoyable to watch.
I think I can actually do this. And it is because you showed what you were doing. You also did not let your hand get in the way between the camera and the sewing needle and foot.
What's more, a couple problems I was having you did take a moment to explain, as they are common beginner problems. For example, the needle getting unthreaded. That is so frustrating, and you explained it.
On a side note, my daughter would greatly appreciate your 40's and 50's fashion.

I've finished with the lesson & I'm so impressed with you. Not only do you show and explain but you do it in real time. That shows us that yes, you can draw and make a gathered skirt in less than 3 hours. That's not saying that everyone will do it in that time. Once the kinks are out, bugs fixed, whatever, you can shop and make your new skirt for tomorrow. The dental floss gathering and the guide stitching are new tricks, thank you. I've subscribed and hope to see A-line and princess seams. My shape has changed over the years and pre-made patterns aren't cutting it anymore.

An extremely informative tutorial, I absolutely love that it's the full lenght, not only does it show exactly every step and is incredibly informatie, but it also shows that you can literally finish a project in just two hours and it makes sewing much less intimidating. Thanks a lot!

Just discovered Gretchen. I hope she has more of these types of instructional videos. Others go too fast, camera angles not clarifying, annoying background music and unhelpful chatter. This is the best intro to pattern making and sewing instruction I've seen.

If you have ever wanted to learn to sew a skirt, I highly recommend this video. Don't let her blue hair scare you. She will teach you how to make a skirt from start to finish in a little over two hours, including cutting your own pattern. Unlike other videos that demonstrate the steps then pull out a finished piece to move to the next step, she completes every step and explains everything. She definitely makes garment sewing less daunting. I'm planning to rewatch it and follow along to make my own skirt, pausing and rewinding as needed.

Wow. I feel I can do this, off to the haberdashery I go first thing in the morning. I have hand and machine sewn before, but not without teething problems throughout. I really appreciate that this showed the entire process so us newer people can join along, press pause anytime etc ... many others go so fast or use sewing language I don’t understand. She explained everything in correct terms but actually said what those terms meant. She gives off a calm, no need to rush, enjoy the project sort of feeling. She makes me feel confident whilst also aware of the little issues we may face here and there, and how to tackle them. My first victim for this skirt is my 8 year old daughter ...... watch this space. Thank you again.

My Auntie was a professional independent seamstress for many years. I never paid much attention to what she did. Until I grew up. Now Im in awe. You make me think of her. She's so skilled and talented. She designed and sewed my wedding gown in 3 days. 3 days. I think it would take me 3 days to sew a 12" seam.

I loved this project. It reminded me of my first project in Home Economics in the 7th or 8th grade (80's) but you did a way better job of explaining how to sew than my teacher ever did. I had to rely on my mother to finish the project. She was a professional seamstress. I'm looking forward to your other videos. Thank you!

I agree with all the positive comments that the 2-hour + video is super-helpful for beginners and veterans alike. Lots to see and learn step-by-step. One suggestion: invest a minute perhaps showing the full garment from all sides, pointing out the features once again so it reinforces what you taught. Not everyone sews along the first time they view the video (beautifully produced, by the way), and unsure viewers might want to see the end product at the end as a convenient way to decide to try it and watch MORE of your videos.

This is very informative. I always wondered how my Great Grand Mother made her patterns. she never bought a store pattern. she kept the patterns with a name on them in a file envelope. My Grand Mother showed me how to follow a store pattern. I used a store pattern most of my life until they became multi-patterns and cost too much. Now I am back to making my patterns again. I have been using parchment paper for my patterns. Thank you very much. I like the idea of the quarter inch hem line, but I still sew on lace for my hems. I sew on the lace after turning under the quarter inch, then hem by hand. I also sew my name tag into the side seam at the bottom of the garment.

I am impressed. You really did an excellent job of instruction on making that skirt. I was a kid during the '40s and had a grandmother who was a seamstress and I learned to sew during that era. Your skirt really brought back memories and you were so detailed and clear that it was a pleasure reliving that experience.

I have been sewing since I was a small girl and learnt on my mothers treadle machine. She made curtains and loose covers for hotels and was very busy. So,I'm not a beginner, I'm in my 60s, but there is always something new to learn. The floss for gathering is genius! I wish I had known that when I made my granddaughters' christening robe! I have had a lovely evening watching this video and have loved every minute of it even though I can't remember how many skirts I have made. So thanks for such a lovely detailed video. Oh, by the way, I love your hair and your eyes are beautiful.

Thank you. I have been sewing since I was about eight years old. I had never been told about using interfacing under under the zipper. That is a neat trick! My grandma used to blind stitch my aunts zippers in the back of my aunts beautiful homemade formal dresses when my aunt was about ready to leave for the dances. It gave them such gorgeous, finished looks. Grandma never used patterns, but everything she sewed was exquisite. She grew up on the farm, and learned to make everything they ate or wore from scratch and the city kids didn’t have anything as good.
