GIRL your obsession with details is just impressive. I'd never have the patience to align all those lines perfectly. This shows why designer clothes are expensive as hell because they definitely do the same (at least I hope so)
Also, I noticed you have quite a lot of views but almost no comments in comparison. So here is a comment for the algorithm :)
Last but not least: I totally agree about the modern trend to overwash clothes. I only wash my dresses if I have sweated profusely or spilled something over it. I wear dresses and skirts at least 7 times before I wash them

    • @gabbyraja
      @gabbyraja 2 месяца назад +2

And I often spot clean, if I've spilled, so I don't have to wash it. Washing (at least in a machine) wears things out faster than anything!

I think it also depends on fabric. I have a red cotton dress that ive worn throughout summer that still smells fresh as lomg as i hang it up. If i wear polyester and sweat a little the smell does not come out after being hung or anything and it has to be washed. Even a little bit of sweat itll smell pretty bad

What an ode to circle skirts!
The favourite one I own is passed down from my grandma, and she had it made in the 50s out of a rougher moire silk. Perhaps my favourite feature on it is the metal zipper, and vintage metal zippers with a cotton band are something that has become a staple in any thrift run for me - unrivaled flexibility, durability and smoothness.
The 'invisible' stitch you speak of (should I have identified it correctly) is a prickstitch, and is also what can be used to insert those beautiful metal zippers by hand.
I digress, but looking forward to using your pocket instructions in my next skirt projects - I rarely add them exactly because of the dreaded pull and distortion of shape...
Looking forward to the next installment in this series!

I'm working on a monstrosity of a 19 gore skirt from long strips of warehouse cutoff, and it was too big by exactly one gore (probably mathed my seam allowance wrong). I pleated that one in and the inward-facing box pleat is subtle but noticeable with the rest of the long vertical lines, and I quite like it :)
I'm planning on putting sizing pleats in future garments too. It's funny that this video and a current project independently told me to use them; the universe is in favor of adjustable garments, I guess!

You’ve included pretty much every addition I was planning to add to my skirt. The pleat idea is ingenious
The invisible stitch is either a prick stitch or a spaced backstitch.
Depending on if you did a running stitch or not.
But the concept of it is called either edgestitching or understitching depending on if you got through the outer layer or not.

I cannot get enough of these videos! I love the way it's filmed, the narration, the simple explanations without being too simplistic.
One of my all time favourite makes of mine is a circle skirt, a while floral cotton waffle print with red and white striped piping. One thing I found (since I have .. how does one say.... a lot going on behind) I had to make adjustments at the back seam to allow for the rise that naturally happens when making anything (but is super obvious on a circle skirt). I ended up adding an extra two inches to the back seam which I graduated back to the side seams so there is no obvious difference in length. It looks perfect, instead (after my first attempt) like it was caught up in my tights.
I definitely plan to make another one or two and will be studying your pocket placements carefully.

Proper style. Modern clothes/fashion 'designers' just don't have the education or knowledge of techniques to design well hanging stylish clothes anymore. You look great in them. I have recently retired and I was never into style as such. However recently I have started wearing elegant clothes. I have some Brocade and gold Jacquard weave waistcoats and they look fantastic. I am growing a goatee beard with understated handlebar moustache. I'm beginning to look quite dapper and the difference it makes to the way people interact with you is amazing. Keep up the great work.

I come from the home of good worsted wool cloth (Bradford, Yorkshire) and have a couple of men's suit lengths that my father obtained about 40 years ago. I am delighted to have discovered your channel via this video. You have such a lovely way of speaking and explaining everything, and your meticulous attention to detail gives me something to aim for; even if I sometimes get lazy and fall a bit short, I still have a well-crafted garment. I have some fabric I bought a long time ago to make a split skirt (essentially this, but with the front and back tying on and half open at the sides instead of zipping at the back, and have been procrastinating because I could not figure out a good way to add pockets. This method will work splendidly when connected to the back piece, and I can't wait to get started on it now! Your gentle vibe + the sprinkling of memes/humour is just perfect.

The little roll on the edge of the pocket can be achieved and invisibly secured by understitching it. Just do a row of machine stitching close to the edge on the pocket lining side but making sure to catch the seam allowances. (It is usually stitched from the reverse side, hence the name). A quick google search will show how it works.

This inspires me to create. And on a side note, I also have been washing my clothes almost after every wear, but since you mentioned it, I feel we should be more educated on how often and with what we should actually do our laundry. I have a friend who studied material design and she gave me advice to stop using the fabric softener as it is destroying the fibers of our garments. Instead, she suggested to use the hygienic detergent, it kills the bacteria, but does not damage the fibers. The only downfall is the clothes become quite harsh and scratchy as we have hard water in our building. Maybe you can suggest how to wash clothes better, so they have a longer life? Thank you for making the most beautiful and informative content!

I think "these thingies" are called "suspender straps"! You could make them detachable with a button on the inside of your waistband and buttonholes in the straps themselves.
I tend to make circle skirts using a similar method to you, though I still make a paper pattern to both stand as a record of what I made and to make it easier to replicate that exact skirt later. I just use the back of wrapping paper or some other large, cheap drawing paper. Also help make sure that my circle skirts at least *start* circular.

I've been researching how to make something inspired by the "Brigadoon skirt" which is a very full, floor-sweeping skirt of tartan with inset pockets. Unlike the inspiration, I wanted to make mine with real wool, and if I can figure it out, an adjustable waist. I was debating buttons, or a wrap style, or a little elastic on either side of the zipper. I once had a wool skirt with button tabs at the waist so that you could adjust the buttons to tighten the waist about an inch, but I don't have that garment anymore. I am trying to consider the weight of the floor-length skirt when planning the construction of the waistband, but also my waist size, which always fluctuates a little both up and down. I want to create a lifetime skirt. This was the most useful and thoughtful video I have seen on this! Thank you!

They're reminiscent of those old eastern European films starring Libuše Šafránková (and pretty much all of the audio and visual references you have included in your own content). Your taste is exquisite and you're making what would be my own dream wardrobe. I've long coveted my own closet full of tailored powdery pink silk 50's lingerie, but sadly lack the time to sew any right now. Your end results are breathtaking. The one thing I learned about sewing is you can always unpick it if it’s not right. I used to buy a bit more fabric to allow for a few mistakes but as I have grown in confidence this is less of an issue. I practise on scraps before committing to the tricky parts it’s very easy to get things the wrong way round so this helps me.

I felt within minutes that we were kindred spirits, so I already planned on subscribing, but then you showed the belts -- "they're so different" 😂 -- AND Mr. Darcy and I knew I had found my new favorite channel, haha! ~Subscribed~ and VERY excited to make a circle skirt as well as all other future projects with the most precise and "extra" details -- because it makes me happy ☺️
(Also, did you make what you were wearing for most of this video? The color and the floral print is so elegant and lovely!)

Looks fabulous, love the pockets! I find a bias strip facing works best for hemming circle skirts. The bias can be steamed so that one side flares whilst the other shrinks, which allows it to take up the difference between the two circumferences. The huff from your studio assistant made me laugh! Hemming a circle skirt takes time!

As a complete beginner, Ive already made 3 or 4 circle skirts based on other youtube tutorials, and none of them go into such detail. At first i thought why should I watch this video, theres nothing hard or special about circle skirts, but im glad i did. Next time im gonna follow this tutorial (even if i was a bit confused by the pocket) and i reckon ill be much more comfortable if anyone decides to take a close look at it, compared to my previous circle skirts. Also beautiful cups!
I do have a question though, if one was to make a circle skirt out of stretchy fabric, should the pocket still be a non stretch fabric?

I'd guess the pocket should be stretchy too or you may get seams popping due to uneaven stretch.

Lovely video! If you understitch the seam allowance to the lining of the pockets, the roll over will happen automatically and will be even :)
I really like how you added the extra width for future expansions. Do you use only a single button for closure?
Now I definitely want to make another circle skirt, although I might forgo the zipper and use a button up approach or hook end eyes or simply a placket and back closure instead. A zipper can break, a placket rarely does ;)
Now that I have discovered your channel, I look forward to looking through your other videos!

Thanks for this video…I am learning how these skirts are made..I have no idea their name or culture and how they’re made. Thanks to you now I know. I’m learning how to make a 3D version of such pleats. Appreciate your detailed effort..

Fantastic. A new seamstress to follow!
I like fabrics that have texture, so bourette silk would be wonderful to make into clothing.
I've never heard of bourette silk so I must do some research.

This is such a detailed explanation of circle skirts. The hem marking item is definitely something I’ll invest in. What material did you use to renforce the waistband?

I was born in 1958 and I was in middle school during the early 70s. We had to have our hems exactly at a particular place on the knee. Some years it was at the very top of the years. It was at the very center of the knee. You cannot be off by an inch or you look wrong.
We always measured from the floor. My mother had me hold the yardstick vertically from the floor up, and she would measure my skirt from the floor. It had to be exactly horizontal to the flooronce it was hemmed.

I believe the tiny stitches along the pocket is called a prick stitch.
