I agree completely. I realized at one point, watching a BBF video, that my envy of John's power hammer needed to be dialed back as I began to realize how long it must take to master that tool, and how many projects I would ruin in the process. By necessity I am slower than folks who are "tooled up" but when I make mistakes they are more easily correctable.

I love this. I started with a pair of vice grips, a brake rotor forge and a chunk of rail road rail that I had to drag outside every time I wanted to heat and beat. Now I have a humble, but nice little 10 x10 forge shed with a real anvil and a leg vice. I love it and worked for it and there is a real sense of accomplishment of earning your way to where ever you are.
When ever we are unhappy with our situation we should stop our belly ach-in and figure out what we need to do to get where we want to be.

Envy is a brick in the wall of selfishness and pride. Brick after brick we build our cage that separates us from others as anger builds in envy. Being humble and focusing on our own strengths and skills to grow and gain may sound even more selfish, but it actually breaks down that wall, opening up ourselves to others, and to take that leap of helping and teaching others is humbling even more while we build up others in our help and selflessness to share our knowledge with others who are learning. Young or old, beginning or even the old timer, we never stop learning! A humble person is always willing to learn as much as they are willing to share. It’s a blessing on us in our humbleness.
    Great video!!!! God Bless!!!

Congratulations on where you are at now in your career. I am happy for you. I'm semi retire now for 2 years and I'm getting started in black smith and wood craft for my retirement job. Though Worldly problems keep interfering, but the Lord provides all my needs and I'm on limited income. But all of my bills are paid, thanks to the Lord. Once again I am happy for you and keep up the good work and God bless you and your family.

Roy, you are on another level. Through hard work and sacrifice, risk taking, and even moving your business and family from your home state to another, you have the benefits and blessings of fruitfulness. What a shocker! Seriously though, I am happy for you and grateful for your impact on the blacksmithing community. One of the things blacksmithing taught me was every tool I make opens up a world of new possibilities, I literally got into blacksmithing by building a forge and RR track anvil and using that to build my first set of tongs. I now do blacksmithing on the side as a business and reinvest a lot of the money I make back into my shop, and it is amazing how much my shop and abilities have grown. I acknowledge "it must be nice" but also that getting to your level "took work, perseverance, risks, and discipline" and no small amount of restraint and wisdom. Keep giving God the glory and pointing to Him as the source of all your blessings! I praise Him for how far He has taken you and thank Him for how far He has taken me. It is inspiring to see someone at your level, and who teaches and gives so much back to the blacksmithing community. Perhaps part of the reason God is taking you so far is because you have chosen to stand up for Him and acknowledge Him in all you do. I too want to be an influence for Christ in this space, and thank you for the example you are setting. Blessings on your and your family!

I have had people say this to me quite a bit. Yes, it is nice... I spent 25+ years in a career (that pays well) only to realize there was no way I could retire with the money I had been putting away. I cashed that money out, took the penalty and bought the shop and tools I wanted. My shop is my retirement plan. I've swapped purple poop for squirrels leaving me walnuts in that strangest places. ;)

As I talk to the guy in the mirror "it must be nice" yes it is thank you, it took 50 years and I went without a lot. Could care less what the neighbor's had.
I now have a nice shop and a good collection of antique engines. I also do a little blacksmithing, it helps me in the repairs on my toys, as a blacksmith would have done 100 years ago. 🔥⚒👍

It is nice to have a bunch of nice tools in a pretty nice shop space
And if I want that I have every right to work at it as hard or harder and enjoy every new tool I can add and every project that i can learn from.
I'm in the getting basic tools together stage of blacksmithing and I can say it IS nice to walk into the eventual forge space knowing I have made a start and am making progress towards my goal
Your help with the knowledge and experience you (and black bear forge and others) bring to your content helps me smile as I continue to learn
    Thank you

Must be nice to have decorations all setup in time for Christmas 2024! Love you guys! Such a valid Roy Rant - I'm totally guilty. I started blacksmithing outside in 2014 - it wasnt until October last year that I finally now have an indoor shop 20x40 with multiple forges and anvils to share with friends. Blessings come with patience! Thank you for an honest reminder!

Sadly for so many people today, “It must be nice…” or envy in general isn’t used properly. As you stated, it’s used in a manner of negativity and jealousy instead of using as a way of pushing oneself to do better so they can achieve whatever is causing said envy. Saying “It must be nice…” out loud to someone is using it in its negative form, but by thinking it and keeping it to yourself, you have the opportunity to turn it into a positive driving force in your own life.

Oh Roy. it is very often said at my place in Poland that Poles are very jealous. They are jealous of everything their neighbor has and it is said that they have to do so that their neighbor has it worse. I always tried to get out of this stereotype. in fact, I didn't try. just lived and lives that way. I never envied what someone has, never looked at what someone has achieved. I enjoy it and cheer everyone on in their achievements. however, I know what I have achieved, from where I started, and that is my benchmark for my progress. Not someone else's vacation or better equipment. Egoistically speaking I am the determinant for myself :)
I have been watching you for a long time and I am very close to your approach to many things ;)

Envy is nothing but poison for the weak of heart and I refuse to drink it. Admiring someone else's skills, what they have accomplished or even just how they have their shop set up should be positive motivation to improve your own work not an excuse to hide behind. To tear down someone else to make yourself feel better is one of the clearest signs of weakness that I know of. It's small, petty and it really, really irritates me.

It's hard to be sure of someone's intended tone in a text-only internet comment, and on top of that not everyone with an internet connection is a very effective communicator in writing. A clumsily worded expression of admiration for what you've built there might easily be misread as envy.
...There are real trolls on here too of course, that's why we have pitchforks and torches! 😁

Your envy should drive you to achieve the object of your envy. If you cant attain it then work harder and find other ways. You can make almost anything if you put your mind to it.

I am well aware of my envy of others but in a slightly different way I think. When I'm envious of someone's progress, milestones or whatever, I am genuinely happy for them but with the caveat that "it would be nice if I...) like I had a buddy sell his Bentley to buy a McLaren. Instead of that must be nice I say "dang it would be sweet to have a Bentley. A real friend let's his friend whip that McLaren around the block a few times... C'mon, puhleeeeze 😊... " Have a wonderful day y'all!

There is an alternative way though!
Recognition of Envy can be a great motivator to "up your game" and get some of the "good stuff" yourself.
It is only when it turns in on itself that it becomes one of the deadly sins!
Am I envious of your set up ...... sure! ...... BUT, because I have gone a different path (and done well in my own right) it becomes a soft warm thing that causes a smile of recognition of attainment!

ah envy not got it breeds hate, and only hurts the person having it, and is one of the 7 deadly sins to boot, deadly as we have a perpensity to commit them and how much damage it can do to a person or their soul,
on death well look even Jesus didn't accend back without willingly taking it on now it was for atonment but still if God can take on death we dont have to fear it, but yea envy can cause spite.
I would say this is less a rant and more a mr rogers moment.
