    I’m only half way through this video but wanted to pause to let you know how informative this is for me! Thank you! Your videos are always great. I am an aspiring blacksmith. I just in the past few years got heavy into woodworking and crafting things, and of course I always need more tools, which are expensive (especially now) so naturally it made me want to get into forging my own tools and now I discovered I absolutely love forging. I built a box style bellows and a brick forge,using lump charcoal, but it’s been so hot and dry here lately that I’m too concerned that the sparks from the charcoal will start a fire (there was just a brush fire close to here last week) so I’m trying to learn about gas forges now. Thank you for your knowledge.

    Nice explanation Roy, the difference Heat treat to forging, is you want to be a little more on the rich side rather than neutral. Scaling and Carbonation on the blade means some of the outside carbon has migrated to the surface then you have to grind it off, lack of oxygen helps to reduce carbon migration. A lot of people even put a carbon source inside blade foil to react with any oxygen present.

    Ok Roy, Today I had time to put on the first coat of Satanite. Man what a struggle!!! First off this really works best if two people are there. One to spread the refractory, and one to rotate the forge! Second, here is Diana's tip to everyone! This is a lot like frosting a cake. So a cake icing knife works really well to thinly spread the refractory! A steel one is recommended. It sticks less. Also a large tall mug of water (Stein size) is recommended to periodically dip the icing knife in. This also aids in reducing the sticking. The long blade helps to reach inside the forge and spread the refractory. Also,another tip. Start around the burner tube entry on that side and work out to the ends. Then you don't end up with a void in the first coat like I did. A medium-size plastic bucket to mix in works well and a spatula helps to scrape the sides and not waste the mix. You will need every drop of the first mix to get a thin coat on the inside, So don't waste it. And follow the sheet instructions for measuring the water! A kitchen scale that measures in oz's is very important! Don't forget to tare the measuring vessels weight.

    Very helpful! I’m new to forging myself and have this same setup. I’ve been running the air choke full open lately thinking that was optional to get a blue flame out of the burner as I was told that was the most important. If I choke up my flame at the burner gets more yellow. I have not until now even thought the amount of flame coming out the front matter’s at all.
    I have also been concerned with being too rich as I was told this produces CO gas and that was a concern. I have CO2 detectors in the shop but nothing for CO.

    • @garethbaus5471
      @garethbaus5471 3 года назад +2

      If CO buildup is even remotely a concern you probably want to install detectors and improve your ventilation you want to design your setup so that it is almost impossible for someone to intentionally create a CO buildup without deliberately sabotaging your ventilation system, and you want to be able to know if your ventilation system isn't functioning properly before it becomes dangerous.
