    For reference, the cheapest deck an opponent played in these five matches was burn at ~$400 to $600 in paper. The most expensive, Jund, is around $2000 in paper. Two of the decks of these five played at least one card where a single copy is more expensive than this budget deck [Liliana of the Veil at ~$90 in paper] and two of the other decks played at least one card that costs more than half as much as this deck for a single copy [Polluted Delta is ~$50 in paper, Stoneforge Mystic is ~$65]. Burn, the cheapest opposing deck, has two cards [Sunbaked Canyon and Arid Mesa] where a playset costs more than this budget deck.

    • @Micheal_Porter
      @Micheal_Porter 3 года назад +4

      @@mund.8529 4 Burning Tree Emissary Is kind of key to giving the deck its nuttiest/scariest draws.
      Other considerations; I was always more of a fan of Ramunap Ruins than Castle Embereth, but whatever works for you.
      I've also tuned the deck for differing metas quite a bit. I eventually cut the Mogg War Marshalls in my own list, often replacing them with 2x of another 1 drop(Everything from Fanatical firebrand, to bomat courier), and then 2x "Card advantage cards." In my Mono red lists, these cards were light up the stage or flame of keld. In my RG lists, I used winding way, with an additional 2-4x card advantage cards in the sideboard. The reason being that 8whack lives or dies by its hand/board presence, and midrange decks will 100% 1-for-1 you out of the game, but the ability to topdeck a refill and turbo one or two more turns out will often kill the Opp.
      You can also consider trimming a land if you lower the curve this way.
      *Finally, a powerful sideboard card that's missing is Kari Zev's Expertise.
      Good luck, and happy whacking!

    • @Micheal_Porter
      @Micheal_Porter 3 года назад +1

      @@mund.8529 Furthermore, I've actually done a ton of tinkering and testing with the list. I've run lists that trim all the fat and run all 1 drops and whackers; I've run lists that run an additional 4 "goblin grenade" in Heartfire. I've run lists with 10x card advantage cards(4 lead the stampede, 4 winding way, 2 flame of keld). I've done a lot of pulling and pushing and twisting and refining of the exact numbers of deck

    Been playing variants of 8 whack for 6 years now. My fav ways to change this deck (if you want to) is to cut the mogg fanatics for 4 burning tree emissary. And the mogg war Marshalls for 4 mana morphose. (Example route) Turn 1: Cast foundry street or guide. Turn 2: Cast burning tree emissary, use mana from etb trigger to surge into a reckless bushwhacker (2 foundry triggers, 1+0 from bushwhacker) = possible 10 damage on turn 2 plus likely they have fetched or will fetch. Manamorphose: can be used to cycle , cast surge on bushwhacker, make two red mana for og bushwhack kicker. BTE will make you more resistant to fury and chalice game 2. Manamorphose will make you more resistant to chalice game 2 by helping you cycle to your other two drops and surge bushwhackers off without having to cast a one drop. Also you will get those lucky moments on turn 2 where you can manamorphose into a BTE into reckless bushwhacker, BTE into a BTE into reckless bushwhacker, manamorphose into a manamorphose (make 2 red mana) to cycle and cast either whacker or whatever creature you want suck as a guide, loyalist or goblin battle master. Having a couple stomping ground, BTE, and manamorphose give you the option to side destructive revelry, atarka's command. Downsides: BTE makes grenade and battle master pump ability a little more finicky.

    Would one or two Den of the Bugbear be a nice replacement for mountains or castles? it would help the flooding and work as emergency goblin for granade (tho 5 lands to be able to attack or granade is a lot so maybe it's too out of range, got not that much modern knowledge to know if it's a good call)

    I wonder if a land creature package of a couple of mutavaults, faithless havens and den of the bugbear would be good in this.... obviously wouldn't want too many but it might shift the math in a couple close games.

      "As Serra's Emissary enters the battlefield, choose a card type. You and creatures you control have protection from the chosen card type."
      The creatures do no damage to opponent until Emissary dies, so it would only be 8 damage (grenade and bolt to face). You can't even mogg fanatic their face cuz of the protection from creatures.
      If you kill Emissary with the bolt + grenade, activate embereth, still only 7 damage and he dies on the clap back.

    Why no den of the bugbear? Seems good for those flood games, and it's an untapped land early when you need it to be.

    Do you think running Mogg War Marshall is better than BTE? I’ve always liked BTE more for surge and bushwhacker, but with battle cry goblin I can understand why you would play mogg instead.

    Excelent content! Im building this deck for a mini open tourment that I will assist this weekend, one question, isnt good to have the goblin wardriver in this deck? (im building the not budget edition) I think the wardriver will let me be more agresive, what do you guys think about it?

    • @MTGGoldfish
      @MTGGoldfish  3 года назад +1

      I think it's mostly because you need a lot of Goblins and the most popular Goblin deck in Modern is more of a combo deck that doesn't really care about throwing five damage to the face (if it wins it's going to deal infinite damage, so burn isn't that relevant), so it uses other things for removal.

    Wouldn't pyrite spellbomb be just better than reality hemorrhage? You have no spell synergies and being 1 mana could help with surge.

    Those goblin guides vs the burn deck gave you so many lands 😂… almost like you were playing against me! (It wasn’t me)
    My goblin guides LOVE giving my opponents lands 😩
    Edit: how do you feel about Blood Moon or Magus of the Moon(budget)? They ain’t goblins, but most of your opponents lands seemed to be non-basic

    Might as well play Goblin Chieftain over BCG though? Perma +1/+1 and haste for the boys. 3 mana over the (essentially) 4cmc BCG. Doesn't make a token, but you could probably fit in 1-2 Warboss over like, 1 Loyalist & 1 Fanatic. Or just run 2 BCG instead of 1 Loyalist and 1 Fanatic.

    So I am curious. I don’t play much modern, and don’t play on MTGO. I have been watching your videos for quite a while and have heard you say several times, “X deck doesn’t normally play this certain card”. So I am wondering, how often do you play against “official” decklists? Like the exact build of common and popular decks. What are usually referred to as net decks. I am wondering if there is a certain percentage playing against those types of decks and home brew decks, ones that aren’t normally considered the “meta”.

    Piledriver as a 1 of in the main makes sense, but I think having 2-3 in the SB is a fantastic idea. For games where the opponent has few to no blockers, it is just an extremely high-value creature, especially better than something like mogg war marshal (which excels in matches where the opponent has a board presence)
