    A floating dock sounds like a great idea - canoes too.
    It might be worth considering putting in a floating reed beds too, as they will clean up the water so reduce the snakes, and maybe make it a nice place for a summer swim too.

  • @sbh2888
    @sbh2888 Год назад

    I could have continued watching this episode forever, it was so satisfying! Obviously a dock and a small boat first.
    Storm cellar next, then a swing swing/set for the kids, definitely need that, then a nice big vegetable garden and fruit orchard. Love the peach trees-you need some more fruit options! Some more flowers, a whole barbecue pit, outdoor seating area. Maybe something with protective nets, like a solarium or indoor porch?
    A tree house for the kids.
    And finally, a pool maybe? Somewhere to swim in those hot summers without any snakes!
    I know the garage/barn needs work too. I can’t wait to see it all!

    Spencer, I love your new tractor and it's cabin. When you are cutting downhill with your brush hog, you should always have the bucket on the front of your tractor for balance. I usually scoop up some dirt with the bucket to keep it front heavy. A tractor can flip over backwards in a split second backing down steep grades without proper balance so be careful

    I know what is next.
    1) A dock
    2 ) 2 shipping containers spaced out about 10 feet apart with a cover overhead ( many examples on you tube ) for storage and a covered canopy over head for a work area. As a union ironworker we had this kind of setup on a multitude of projects for storage and to give us a place to work out of the weather.
    Some of these we put a wood wall up on the back side and on the front put up a wood wall with double doors for access. You could make doors big enough to store you new tractor inside and keep it out of the weather. Or keep it as a shop and put up a pole barn to store your tractor in like I do down on my tree farm in south GA.
    If you take my advise on the separated shipping containers with cover overhead. Make sure you put doors in the middle of each container on the inside for access and some windows for light. At minimum some vents at top of container to let heat and moisture out. I have had to work in some of those containers without vents or doors and in the GA sun they can reach 120 degrees. Best thing to do is have the canopy cover the tops of the shipping containers also to keep out of direct sunlight.

    A suggestion for your replacement dock. Make it a floating dock out of 6 or 8 plastic barrels. Maybe see how much it would cost to get the barrels filled with open cell foam insulation in case any of them spring a leak. Getting all of the undergrowth cleared from the pond edge REALLY opens up the view, with the added benefit of _removing_ snake habitat. Sorry, but with Beau motivating around on her own, Cam will be fairly soon AND the dogs, getting rid of venomous snakes close to the house should be a fairly high priority.

    Congratulations on the completion of your house! As you probably already know -- There's always something that needs to be updated and improved!!
    Get lithium batteries, cut a hole in your floor, under your house, making a trap door in the floor so you can get to the batteries and this will protect your batteries from wet, heat & cold.
    Put in a well AND, a wooden swing set for the kids!!
    Also, because of the moccasin ( when there is one -- there are more!), get a floating solar-powered aeration fountain to help with the stagnate water. Would be neat as well!!
    Ya'll have done a magnificent job on your home!!
    You're never finished .......

    Hey guys, my wife and I are building as well. We have a 2 acre pond and you need aeration and pond dye in there. Do a pond dye video. Will clear up you algae, keep sunlight out of your pond and the aeration will keep it beautiful. We hooked our bubbler to a windmill that aerates ours. We also added rip rap all the way around the pond to make it beautiful. Love the channel

    A suggestion about wood chips. It takes nitrogen out of the soil to decompose chips if you just spread them. It’s better to pile them up and let them cook for several months, and even kick start them by adding nitrogen fertilizer and green grass clippings. Otherwise you are creating a net loss of nitrogen if you just spread them. This after several years keeping the jungle at bay on Kauai. We had several tree services delivering truck loads from their exploits, which we turned into black gold in short order with the heat and humidity Kauai has in abundance, as you have in summer. We would turn it regularly uncovering steaming pockets. It rained daily so we didn’t worry, but I imagine in your case it would have to be watched. Oh the snakes would flock to your piles, especially in winter, one downside, but you could use that to your advantage by locating far from Human activity.

      And it can create fungus.

    • @davidstuart4489
      @davidstuart4489 Год назад

      Good point about leaching nitrogen from the soil. Grass clippings, as you say, will help. Cultivating clover (not woodsorrel/shamrock [oxalis stricta] but white clover [trifolium repens]) fixes nitrogen into the soil, is immune to dog urine, helps pollinators, etc. So figuring out where nitrogen is important and where it is not is a good step in the planning process.

      @@jt1364 You'd be shocked at how quickly that vegetation returns to those pond edges. There's plenty of natural habitat in the surrounding area. It will allow the larger animals better access to a water source during the dought. Believe me, I had a small lake behind my house. We regularly scalped the shore edges. Made mowing safer and it became a favorite watering hole for other species. Didn't take long for it to overgrow again. We had to go after it 2 or 3 times a year. Also - they have small children and it makes seeing the snakes a lot easier. But I understand your concerns.
