Peter’s Secret World Tour is a great concert. “In Your Eyes” and “Shaking the Tree” are a couple of my favorites from that show.

An excellent track from Peter and Kate Bush. It was well known Kate was a huge Genesis fan, and very much Progressive in her own music. This has a beautiful haunting melody and meaningful lyrics which compliment it. Many always say Phil sold out and went pure 'Pop', but in fairness to Phil, he did nothing Peter Gabriel didn't do, but seemed to get so much stick for it. Of course many us would have preferred of Peter had of stayed with Genesis, and who knows what incredible music they could have made together had he stayed. I listened to The Lamb in its entirety recently instead of individual tracks after far too many years. I was struck by what an epic piece of work this was, Peter's swansong with the band. In his own solo career he made some beautiful music, but feel he his work with Genesis was on another level.

Kate is genuinely a very unique and the most innovative artist, if you fall under her charm, that's it, you will be utterly devoted to her and you will offer her the patience her music sometimes need. And if you do, you will be rewarded a thousand fold. Given your taste based on previous commentary, perhaps Hounds of Love is the best place for you to start, especially side two which is known as the Ninth Wave...her first two albums are very personal to me with songs she wrote between the ages of 13 to 21....yes, that young, and why many revere her as a genius especially in the music industry across all genres...Dave Gilmour was pivotal in championing her talent right from the outset, and there is good reason for that.

@@retroreactions.... well the "Hounds Of Love" is certainly an iconic album it's the perfect balance between the commercial songs like "Running Up That Hill" on the first side, compared to the more experimental linked suite of tracks that form "The Ninth Wave". Personally it's not my absolute favourite Kate Bush studio album it sits at number 2 on my top four. Regarding, "Wuthering Heights" Kate's debut single which was a worldwide smash outside of America and whose chart success was only exceeded by the absolutely massive worldwide smash that was "Running Up That Hill" last year, Kate deliberately pushed her voice to a very high register because Cathy in the novel (at this point) and in the song is a ghost.
Kate's vocal range has been estimated to be over four octaves at its greatest extent.
Kate first worked with Peter Gabriel on his 3rd album and contributed backing vocals on "Games Without Frontiers" and "No Self Control", that collaboration was key in another way, because Kate was introduced to the Fairlight CMI which she started to use on her 3rd studio album "Never For Ever" Kate was a co-producer and then on her two subsequent albums "The Dreaming" (first time Kate was the sole producer) and the previously mentioned "Hounds Of Love".
TBH when it comes to Kate Bush it's worthwhile going back to her debut album "The Kick Inside" and listening to albums in chronological order, so you get an idea of how Kate developed as an artist, to go back to "The Kick Insde" one track on written by Kate when she was only 13 years old and it was good enough to be released as a single.

@@retroreactions.... ok, second attempt to reply...firstly, enjoying the channel so the thanks is mine...secondly, Cloudbusting is the obvious Reactors choice, it is one of her most celebrated and well known singles (in the UK)...but I would suggest you being brave, and dive straight into the whole of the second side, known as The Ninth Wave', a conceptual suite of 7 songs that do need to be heard as a whole in my opinion, lasts as long as Echoes does , so time wise you have managed such a duration...if pushed on a single track and one that I think you may like the most, then I have a hunch 'Mother Stands for Comfort' on side one could be the one that hits the marker based on your historic commentary on the channel...just go with your gut mate, follow your intuition, you'll know best...but with the Ninth Wave, do the prep work ;) www.katebushencyclopedia.com/ninth-wave-the

Hi and thanks for a really well considered reaction video. Speaking personally (and doing so as Kate Bush fan from the beginning), I always marvel at Peter Gabriel's performance on this. Kate is great, but his vocal just looms over everything (as it should on his song).
If you were to take a dive into Kate's music, most people will probably recommend her "Hound of Love" album, which by any standard is a great album. I would always just say to listen to the entire side 2 which is really a single piece or suite of connected songs. But to pick out one song on that album I would go with "The Jig of Life." Other than that you really cannot go wrong with a song like "Rocket's Tail" (and many others of her back catalogue).

You seem a very intelligent gentle soul. I think you might like Peter Gabriel's song "Shock the monkey" it's very interesting song, also "Games without frontiers" by Peter is also another good one. A Kate Bush song you might want to react to is Kate Bush's "Moments of Pleasure" it has a very very interesting video and the song is sooooo beautiful. Another beautiful song by Kate is "This woman's work" her voice is sooo beautiful in this song also!

I'm a little bit late to the game viewing this reaction, but always enjoy your appreciation for these artists. If I might make a suggestion, I highly recommend viewing the live version of this from Peter's Secret World tour in 1993. That live duet is with Paula Cole, and it is a powerful performance. I worked in the concert business for 23 years, and the live performance of this is amazing!!!!
Lovely reaction Brandon, this is yet another wonderful rabbit hole to dive into, Peter is without comparison. "So" is a magnificent album, I think you mentioned "Red rain" but not sure if you've heard it or not? If not make sure you do and watch the official clip, it is absolute sublime artistry deeply rooted in humanitarian empathy, an incredible way to open the album. Peter has a unique way of appealing to our social conscience, a theme which runs throughout much of his solo work. My two other favourites from the album you may not have heard are: Mercy Street & In your eyes, like Don't give up and Red Rain, they reach into your soul and you become a better person for the experience. The live clip of "In your eyes" from the "Secret World" tour of the early 90's with co vocalists Paula Cole and Papa Weemba is extraordinary. I was fortunate enough to see this tour and it was unforgettable. Have only scratched the surface, so much more to marvel in from the great PG! Cheers

I had the great pleasure of seeing him live in my country, Argentina in Oct. 15th 1988, Amnesty tour along Sting, Bruce Springsteen and Tracy Chapman,. River Plate stadium 70k people, I spent 9 hours in front of the stage without eating, drinking, and even without being able to go to the bathroom lol, but it was worth it.

You shall try The Rythm Of The Heat from his 4th album (I think it's called Security in the US). This song touched me deeply when I listened to it the very first time (along with most of the other songs but this is the opening track !). This album was recorded more than 40 years ago but still sound right. Maybe his most avant-garde work along with his 3rd album. Those two records introduced this very special gated snare drum sound that everyone copied in the 80's which was found by Phil Collins during the 3rd album sessions.

I saw Peter on the "So" tour at Earl's Court, London (15k) and the "Secret World" tour at Sheffield Arena (12k). His vocal performances are terrific and there is always a sense of theatre. I agree about the way his voice matured in his solo projects compared to his years with Genesis. Fun fact: Kate Bush was signed to EMI Records after David Gilmour helped her produce a demo tape when she was 16!

Great reaction. But surprised from your research that you did not pick up on the fact that it was Kate Bush doing the backing vocals on ‘Games Without Frontiers’, as she did on other songs from that Peter Gabriel album. As friends and collaborators it was natural for Peter to turn to Kate after Dolly turned him down. Another fun fact is that Peter was inspired to write this song by a number of hardship stories, including the impact of the miners strike in the UK and the Depression in America. The song’s opening lyrics “In this proud land” are the title of a book he read which showed photos by Dorothea Laing and others of Depression era America (still available on Amazon). The American backstory to the song was why Peter at first wanted an American to do the duet with him, hence is first choice of Dolly Parton. But like you I’m glad she turned him down and he chose Kate instead.
Bizarre...I just listened again and that does not sound like Kate to me....I always thought it was Peter in falsetto, or at least some other female backup singer. We learn stuff every day! Thanks SteveR

Finally you got to "So"! And this was a great choice of a track (then again, almost any song in that album would be a great choice!). "In Your Eyes" has a special meaning to countless people whom it helped cope with hard times, and in some cases even saved them from suicide --- there are many such reports. Only a frozen frame from the video clip appeared, so I don't know if you actually watched it, another masterpiece in itself, with the symbolism of the solar eclipse in the background and that long, sweet hug --- which must have been rather easy to do, because the very private and recluse Kate Bush has very few close friends, but one of them is exactly Peter Gabriel. Apart from both artists' absurd level of talent, that already existing connection between them surely helped make this song what it is. But my all-time favorite Kate Bush song is "This Woman's Work", which was more popular in a 1990s cover by Maxwell, but I find the original version far better.
From "So", since you're already familiar with "Red Rain" and "Sledgehammer" (though it's always a pleasure to revisit the latter's groundbreaking and award-winning video clip), I also highly recommend "In Your Eyes" and "Mercy Street". But although the great Youssou N'Dour's vocals at the end of the studio version of "In Your Eyes" are to die for, this is one of those songs that get much better live (and Peter Gabriel live is something else --- if I could take only one DVD to a desert island, it would be the one of his 2003 "Growing Up" concert in Milan, absolutely stunning!). There are many live versions of "In Your Eyes", all great, but the classic one is from the 1990s "Secret World" tour. I always get moved to tears with the absolute GREATNESS of that performance and its vibes! (I just had a look and at this moment the original video has only 27 million views on RUclips. Way too few!)
"Mercy Street" is sad, pungent, eerie, and stunningly beautiful all at once. It was inspired by and dedicated to the late poet Anne Sexton, who killed herself after struggling with bipolar disorder all her life (a disease that Peter Gabriel himself is rumored to suffer from, which has never been confirmed or denied). A very unique song! Anglo-Brazilian singer Ritchie has an amazing cover of it, too.
Yes, I agree that Peter Gabriel sounds better solo than in Genesis, but I think he explained the reason himself in "Solsbury Hill"...

This is a wonderful song. Both of them, unusual and mysterious to me. Top tier artist. "Moribund the Burgermiester" by Peter Gabriel, is a strange and fun song. I grew up not knowing Peter Gabriel was the first lead singer of Genesis. That is soooo hilarious to me now.☮💗

First, if you already know Games Without Frontiers, you’ve already listened to Peter and Kate collaborating, because she sings the “Jeux sans frontiers” part that keeps repeating in the song 😊
About “Don’t Give Up”, many people have said that this song saved their lives, because they would keep playing it in moments of great distress and helped them pull through. Even some famous people have said that it saved them, including Elton John.
About Miami Vice, many songs both by Peter and by Phil Collins were featured in the show. There must have been som fan in the crew 😁
Regarding Peter’s voice, yes, it has changed with time, it’s become raspier and deeper, but there’s also something to take into account: when he was in Genesis all the songs were written in a higher pitch than his, because the band thought it made them more romantic. So he wasn’t singing with his natural voice, there. Although Peter always changes his voice and way of singing from song to song, anyway. He has an incredible skill to make variations in his vocals.
About this year’s songs, Peter has a new one released this month that you can already listen to, it’s called The Court, and I like it even better than Panopticom! 😃
Finally, it’s very hard to choose favourites, so I won’t do it, but I have a list of songs that I think you really need to listen to, because they’re all so different and brilliant, and they’re gonna blow your mind. Here they are: The Rhythm of the Heat, The Family and the Fishing Net, Moribund the Burgermeister, In Your Eyes, Intruder, Mercy Street and Sky Blue. I think you’re gonna love them all.

And about all the people who have told him that this song saved their live, do you know what he always says? That most of the merit has to be given to Kate’s performance. That’s how humble he is. He wrote the words, created the song, and when something wonderful happens, like knowing your song saved many lives, he gives the credit to another person. He’s really unique.
It seems Dolly Parton didn’t care for singing with him because she didn’t know him. Her loss and our win!! I really don’t think Parton would have been adequate for the song. Anyway, some time later, seeing the great success of Peter’s album “So”, Parton reached out to Peter to collaborate with him, but he was too busy at the time. Poetic justice 😁

Phil Collins starred in an episode of Miami Vice, I think he played a drug dealer. Phil also acted in a pretty good movie about a real-life train robber in England called "Buster." What incredible talents were in Genesis! Steve Hackett is as prolific and consistently good as anyone, and I love Mike and Tony's early solo albums. Smallcreep's Day and A Curious Feeling are great albums. I cannot forget original guitarist Anthony Phillips, who has a great catalog of mostly acoustic guitar. I can't wait to hear the rest of Peter's new album, i/o, which is being released song by song with the full moons. If you are able to see Peter live on his upcoming tour, be sure to get good tickets. Peter is my favorite solo artist and always puts on a creative, memorable show.
I get a military sense in this song. Like he was trained to fight as a soldier and his side lost, and came back to a depression civilian life

Another great reaction Brandon! I’ve loved Peter Gabriel for a number of years. My first show of his was back in 1982 for the “Security “ album tour and I was in college at Northern Illinois University and this show was recorded and made into the 1983 album “ Plays Live”. I still have my ticket stub for show, had 5th row center. As far as Kate Bush goes, I was introduced to her music while in college (early ‘80s). She was only 19 when she released her debut album “The Kick Inside” in 1978. On that debut she has her big hit “Wuthering Heights” and another song I really like “The Man with the Child in His Eyes”. These two tracks are back to back on the album but show 2 very different sides to Kates’ singing.

Brandon….. I just wanted to tell you that I discovered an album I think you would love…, for work or whatever. Not to react to because it’s 2003. The whole album, to me, has a Marillion vibe but more darkly atmospheric. It’s be a band that’s usually known as metal, but this album is almost acoustic. The band is Opeth and the album is called The Damned. I know. Sounds like you’d hate it. But it’s sound is so NOT like the title.

I would never have listened to them at all except for a reaction channel that reacted to that song and I was so surprised!
