The song was inspired by the Depression-era photographs of Dorothea Lange, showing poverty-stricken Americans in Dust Bowl conditions. Gabriel saw Lange's images in a 1973 book titled In This Proud Land. He felt that a song based on this was wholly appropriate to difficult economic conditions in England under Margaret Thatcher. He composed lyrics about a man whose unemployment causes stress in his domestic relationship. The verses, sung by Gabriel, describe the man's feelings of isolation, loneliness and despair; the choruses, sung by Bush, offer words of hope and encouragement.
Gabriel originally wrote the song from a reference point of American roots music and he approached country singer Dolly Parton to sing it with him. However, Parton turned it down, so his friend Kate Bush took her place

Great reaction!👍😁 From what i understand, Peter Gabriel wrote this song because he was SO TOUCHED that some of his ancestors went through "the great depression"....he wanted a woman to sing it with him due to the fact that the women of the time stepped up and helped!! 😍❤️😍

Peter Gabriel was the former lead singer of Genesis who had huge career in late 70's and 80's. Loads of great music. Kate Bush did everything. A true artist; wrote, sang, did the choreography and production on her videos. Total creative control of everything she did.

She was the first woman to have a number 1 album in the UK consisting entirely of songs she had written herself. At the age of 19, which the record company actually sat on for 2-3 years before it's release.

This is the first video reaction I watched of yours, and I am very glad you enjoyed this song. You are right, the vibe of the song is soo smooth, and soothing. The words are instrumental, and I always think of it when I am feeling down and feeling like giving up myself. I have also played this for many of my friends when they were at their wits end. I look forward to watching more of your reaction videos. If you haven't already - I highly recommend some of her other songs as well.

Unemployment was rife in the Northeast of England in the 80's. Whole towns were virtual ghost towns. Thousands unemployed, and many turned to alcoholism, crime and drugs. Men in particular didn't cope well with the sense of failure. They feel a failure if they can't feed their family, and bottle those emotions up. And many committed suicide. Jumping off bridges into rivers to their death was common, and that's what the lyric refers to, when he sings, whatever may come, and whatever may go, that river's flowing. He's basically considering suicide, and his wife knows it!

He’s brilliant, a very talented and unique artist, and all of his songs are worth checking out, but to start with, you could listen to “In Your Eyes”, “Sledgehammer” and “Solsbury Hill”, you’ll love both the groove of these songs and his vocals.

This video was directed by Godley & Creme. They were a rock duo who turned to directing music videos. There's a second version of this video which focuses less on the singers. I remember reading somewhere that Peter Gabriel's then-wife, Jill, didn't care too much for this video in which her husband is embracing Kate Bush for several minutes. As for Peter Gabriel's old group, Genesis, I would recommend reacting to the studio version of their song, Firth of Fifth. Phil Collins plays drums on it.

So what is this song about?
Well, to answer that we have to go back to Great Britain in the late 1970's. Back then a right wing government led by Prime minister Margaret Thatcher. took a good look at the nation's industries and decided to sell all of them off to foreign investors and closing the whole lot down.
Which meant for millions of workers that they were going to be laid off. (Yes, you've read that right MILLIONS) From one day to the next, people who's lives had revolved around the industries and jobs that were passed down from father to son for many generations, were without a stable income. Many took to the streets but many more of them started destroying themselves with alcohol and suicide.
Peter Gabriel is from higher class, the crisis would never have impacted him personally but he emphasized with those people, after all, being a professional musician is very hard work too. He came across a picture taken in the great depression when similarly millions of people were laid off when the stock market collapsed. The lyrics he wrote apply to both situations and in both cases it was him showing solidarity.
One final tidbit, when recording this song, Peter Gabriel wanted Dolly Parton to sing the soothing "It's gonna be alright" part, which to everybody involved was an inspired choice. But Parton couldn't be booked so Kate Bush was brought in instead and she knocked it out of the park.

There is something quite fake about these reaction videos. I have a feeling that so many thoughts are just made to appease the viewers rather than a real reaction. The screwed up face and Urr sounds seems a common theme amongst many of these reactors. In only 5% of reactors do I feel their reviews are actually genuine and that they are listening to the song for the first time. I can usually call a bullshitter.
