“Bela Lugosi’s Dead” opens the movie “The Hunger”. It’s iconic. It’s a must movie. David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon.

If you want other scary Kate songs: Get out off my house always gives me chills.
Under Ice might be another great one.
For other creepy angle: the infant kiss is inspired on the innocents .
    Got excited 😂

For "Hammer Horror" (a reference to Hammer Film Productions, a producer known for its series of horror films, initiated in 1958, and whose main character was Dracula, prince of vampires), it would have been necessary to complement a "Christopher Lee's Dead" (actor chosen by Hammer Film Productions to play a certain count, owner of a dismal and dark castle lost in a region of Transylvania)... but because no musical composition has been made in this sense, so go for Bela Lugosi! Thank you Brandon for this terrifying 'Halloween' concept series.

You gotta gotta gotta react to Kate's evil sister, Nina Hagen and the song gotta be Antiworld from 1981. There's no better suggestion for Halloween, believe me.

Although I am familiar with Kate, I’d never heard that particular song before. She’s certainly one of the most uniquely talented female musicians from the 80s. Hammer Horror was definitely avant-garde. And the first time I’d ever heard Bela Lugosi’s Dead was during my first ever viewing of The Hunger. That one is about as Halloweenish as it gets 😆. Love that early British Goth.

"Bela Lugosi's Dead" is actually the only Bauhaus song I know because I'm not really into goth, but I know this one well because of the opening scene of a very iconic and totally cult film that I love. The scene takes place at a nightclub where Bauhaus is performing the song live, and not only would the scene lose half its impact without it, but it also sets the tone for the movie very well. *"The Hunger"* is a very chic postmodern vampire story by Tony Scott (Ridley Scott's brother) with many twists (meaning both twists on the original vampire lore and plot twists) and features Catherine Deneuve at 40, more beautiful and elegant than ever (if that's even possible! 😍), David Bowie in his usual great acting, and Susan Sarandon in one of her most unusual roles, while touching on subjects that are still sensitive to some today but were completely bold and almost taboo in the early 1980s.
And what to say about Kate Bush (and Camel, because it seems that half of the band was playing in this song, from the credits)? When is she not magnificent and unmistakably her own style? I didn't know this one, but not only would I recognize her instantly, but also locate this in her early career, when she preferred to sing in a higher pitch. I still heard echoes of the legendary "Wuthering Heights" and the very much underrated "Babooshka" (which has some of the most unusual, intriguing, and intelligent lyrics I've ever seen).

Interesting...def never heard of that film. Wow, didn't know Kate used Camel's members... There will never be another quite like Kate.. Still looking forward to The Ninth Wave...

About Kate Bush crew, I believe it were more the musicians from Alan Parsons Project, Stuart Elliott, Ian Bairnson are regular band for Alan Parsons, Andrew Powell orchestral arrangements and Duncan Mackay played keyboards in the early albums. I believe they were a gathering in 84 on the outsider Album "Keats" also with David Paton, Colin Blundstone with Peter Bardens from Camel produced by Eric Woolfson.

Well you certainly committed to the makeup!!! Bauhaus was a revelation when we first heard it at a time of huge musical change - there we went again on a completely different track. It was suprisingly good to dance to - hypnotic. If you want to go full horror with Kate Bush try waking the witch. In my view it doesn't matter where she was in the charts she was always original, complex and way ahead of her time .

I don’t care much for Kate Bush, but that Bauhaus was cool. I’ve heard of them for years but never really looked into their music; I didn’t realize they were considered the first goth band. Parts of that song reminded me of “Tear You Apart” by the band She Wants Revenge.

Crikey, Brandon! That's some very freaky make-up! 😬 😄👍 And those are great song choices, too! 😀 Kate Bush is my favourite female artist, and 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' reminds me of catching rides to work with a Punk Rocker colleague in his car around 5am and in the very early 90's, and that song was on the tape he'd had in the car stereo all the time 😄

They'd been a rather difficult decade for myself, being in my 20's and uncertain about who I really was and what I wanted to do and be. And they also were so different compared to the 80's (also musically), which I'd loved, and it was only from about '96 onwards when I'd finally adapted 😅

Suggestion for another great Halloween pair of two songs...
Bloodletting (The Vampire Song) -Concrete Blond
Dead Man's Party - Oingo Boingo
Both somewhat upbeat songs but with dark lyrics. Oingo Boingo was a very unique theatrical band whose lead singer/songwriter (Danny Elfman) went on to contribute many soundtracks for popular films, and Concrete Blond is (to me) very underrated band with a fantastic lead singer in Johnette Napolitano.

Wow! Bauhaus was very creative sounding I must admit, it's like the drum sidestick were melted in a weird potion and treatments (sounds like delay effect hand played) maybe by a mad engineer joining the band😈, the voice remind me to David Bowie, it get more drown in the reverb finally. It was really captivating, was my first hearing ha-ha! I know and love Kate Bush works usually, I believe it was on her first album, but this "Hammer horror" wasn't so creepy as the title seems to offer, Kate was maybe still a bit shy in presenting the story before the "short surprise coda" in a very orchestral manner (in my feel this mood stay too joyful and classic for the thematic) but I experienced more interesting in her further later works, were some of them could easily fit for Halloween. Maybe "Night Scented stock" or "Breathing" on the album Never for ever, also "Get out of my house" Houdini" on the Dreaming, then "Under the ice" or "Waking the witch" on her 1986 Hounds of Love ? 😉Thanks for the listening Brandon 🦇🎶

Hi and thanks for this, it was really cool. Now if you are going to do Halloween themed songs and you are going to include Kate Bush in that (and why not since she is outstanding)... then you absolutely, really, really have to include her song "Waking the Witch" from the most famous, celebrated and critically acclaimed section of her most famous, celebrated and critically acclaimed album, and one of the two songs on that album that she described as getting drunk songs in that she talked about getting drunk in order to properly get the vocal performances the she was looking for in them.

    • @tommydevlin702
      @tommydevlin702 Год назад +1

Hi@@retroreactions.... and thanks for taking the trouble to reply. In relation to "Waking the Witch" as a non Halloween reaction I would say absolutely yes. It is part of her famous "Ninth Wave" cycle or suite of 7 songs on side 2 of her most successful album "Hounds of Love." That piece, "The Ninth Wave" tells the single story of a woman lost at sea, fighting to remain conscious and stay alive, and the cycle of songs recounts the nightmares and hallucinations she experiences before finally being rescued and emerging from the ordeal as if she had been reborn. As a concept piece or suite of songs "The Ninth Wave" works incredibly well, which is one of the reasons why it and that album are so celebrated. The best way to listen or do a reaction video to it is to do the entire 7 song cycle in one sitting. But many of the songs of it can stand on their own, even if you do lose a little bit of their context and story telling. But yes, "Waking the Witch" while it is perfect for Halloween, will work very, very well as a reaction video at any time and it is a genuine 'horror' song.
Thanks again for the reply, but also for the time and effort you put in to your reactions and also for the thought you put in to your comments.

@@retroreactions.... Hi and thanks for replying. That would be very cool if you did and I would look forward enormously to your comments on it. I don't know when you first decide on which songs to do for Halloween, if you would intend to do the same next year, or if you had any inkling of including any Kate Bush material in that. But there are three songs on her famous. most experimental and least commercial album "The Dreaming" that are just made for Halloween:
"Get Out of My House" - inspired by the Stephen King book 'The Shining'
"Houdini" - inspired by a story about the widow of Harry Houdini attending a séance to try to contact him after his death
"Leave it Open" - which is just weird (but to me at least wonderful and my favourite song on the album).
She also has a song called 'Rocket's Tail' on her 1989 album 'The Sensual World' that gathers together quite a few ideas, but at its heart it seeks to capture what it might be like to actually be a firework in the middle of a fireworks display and features some searing guitar work from David Gilmour and the result is quite spectacular.
Thanks again for taking the time to reply to me and thanks again for being of the better music reactors.
